Keerthinarayana temple at Talakadu near Mysore, Karnataka
Krishna Kumar @Mysoretusker wrote : Retrieved from sand......
Keerthinarayana temple at Talakadu near Mysore was partially buried in sand dunes for centuries. Systematic excavations by the archaeologists in the 20th century brought out the glory of the 1000 year-old temple which was consecrated by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate his victory over the Cholas.
The temple was in a state of ruin after excavation and suffered more damages as the vimana collapsed due to heavy rains in 2002. It was dismantled, reset and restored by the Archaeological Survey of India and is one of the main attractions at Talakadu today.
The idol of Keerthinarayana is about 8 feet in height, is well carved and stands on a high pedestal. This is reckoned to be the only Hoysala-style temple in Talakadu.
Located on the banks of the Kaveri, Talakadu is a delight for the history and heritage buffs where the shifting sands have buried many temples some of which have been excavated and exposed.

Keerthi Narayanan Temple at Talakadu, Karnataka Chittra M wrote: Talakadu maralagali, Malangi maduvagali, Mysuru dhorege makkalilladhe hogali - curses Alamelamma. Meaning let Talakadu be submerged in sand, let Malangi bcome a whirlpool and let the Mysore Raja never have an heir. And her curse did come true. The cursed town of Talakadu and the submerged temples are sight you will not believe until you are there. What was once a fertile land is now submerged in sand. Out of nowhere suddenly the landscape changes and it looks like beach sand all over the place. It is said that there were nearly 30 temples in the area and now only 5 Shiva temples called Panchalinga temples are visible. Seen in picture is another temple called Keerthi Narayanan Temple which has been excellently excavated and reassembled by ASI. More on Blog.
