Takorea, 1/18/17
Takorea $$
M: Korean/Mexican fusion. Strange concept, good execution. Fun decorations, good service. Acceptable place for a date, would prefer to eat dinner here. 4/7
Food recommendations: Korean Fried Chicken tacos (KFC)
A: The Place: The overall ambiance is strange. Sitting at the table eating a quesadilla whilst staring at a pepper smiling creepily at me is quite unnerving. These peppers seemed to stare at you no matter where you are in the restaurant. Above the hallway to the bathroom, is a taxidermied deer head on a mirror. On the mirror’s four corners are the deer’s hooves positioned in such a way that it looked as though it was flipping you off.
The Food: I ordered the Pollo Doble Quesadilla. The quesadilla took longer than usual to get to me. Supposedly there’s an egg in the quesadilla. It was quite good, though. The chicken was cooked very well and the quesadilla as a whole was hot. 4/7 would recommend. Unfortunately, I could not finish the quesadilla due to already having eaten beforehand. They did give me a neat little box to hold my remainders.
Notes
M: Abundance of Adidas Superstars (White Girl no.3s). More research required as to why.
A: [DAY 2] - Subject continues to think that these “dates” are a “success.” God, I hate lesbians. She is not taking the hint that I do not find these “dates” enjoyable. To whoever is reading this, please help me.

Late, late. Rosie was running so much later than she had planned. A walk-in had gone long and then people hadn’t been willing to listen when she said she had lunch plans and had pulled her aside to talk her ear off. It was like her curse, so many people joking over her lifetime that Rosie would never be on time and this would be no different. “I am so sorry.” Speaking quickly as she rushed into the restaurant, seeing the other woman. “Would you believe this place is harder to find sober and in the daylight?”

(more…)

TaKorea Cocina helps tamale vendors by buying out their supply while also feeding the homeless CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago restaurant owner Robert Magiet of TaKorea Cocina is helping out local tamale vendors by buying all their supply while also feeding the homeless. “I’m going out every morning and buying out tamale vendors so they can go home and get out of the cold for the day,” Magiet said. For over a week, Magiet has been purchasing carloads of tamales from vendors in the Logan Square, Humboldt Park and Avondale neighborhoods. “About a week and a half ago on a Friday, I was driving past Humboldt Park and I saw a tamale vendor out, and she looked like she was dressed to be in Antarctica,” he recalled. “And I pulled over and asked her, if I bought all of her tamales if she would go home for the day, and she said of course, absolutely, yes. And I guess I just started there.” He’s been doing it with help of donations from the community . So far Magiet said he’s helped over 10 vendors. “Well, I feel really happy, the man is like an angel,” said tamale vendor Javier Hernandez. Magiet is no stranger to helping others. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic he’s helped feed hundreds of people through his West Town Feeds movement. The tamales he’s purchased are given either to homeless encampments or shelters. Magiet said he also stocks Love Fridges, which are fridges spotted around the city where people can either donate or grab fresh produce or cooked meals. In addition to buying tamales, Magiet said he plans to offer some of the vendors employment. He said he’s grateful his community is joining him and helping those most in need. Takorea, Atlanta, GA
I'm back and in Atlanta for 3 nights!! Have been away from blogging so figured this would get my mind back into it. Going to try to vlog every place that I go in Atlanta while I'm in Atlanta!! I have never done that before. Let's start with Takorea, a Mexican, Korean fusion restaurant in midtown Atlanta! I didn't have a place in mind for lunch when I landed so on the Marta I started doing a search in midtown. I have been to Atlanta before but not in quite a few years. I hadn't really had breakfast so I was hungry but I didn't want to eat too much either or I would want to sleep all afternoon. Takorea sounded unique and it was both reasonable and close by. It was about a 10 minute walk from the midtown stop in the Marta. I liked the rustic, friendly feel of the place. I decided to grab a bar stools once I was alone. The hostess was friendly and the bartender greeted me quickly as well. I have been fighting a cold so just water for me, at least for lunch. The menu was fairly simple with korean touches on Mexican food and vice versa. It was taco Tuesday so I chose 3 different tacos, korean bbq pork, KFC, which is Korean fried chicken and fried shrimp. I added a side of their house napa kimchi to make my tacos spicier and a little more Korean. The food came very quickly and though it seemed small, it was plenty of food. All 3 tacos were very good, with the bbq pork being my least favorite. I liked the flavor but the pork was a little saucy and didn't go too well with the kimchi. It was still good, just not my favorite. The fried shrimp and chicken were both excellent amd the kimchi was a great match for both of them! For 3 smallish tacos, I was surprised how full I was afterwards. An added bonus was taco Tuesday, all tacos were only 2 bucks!! My lunch was less than 10 bucks total, in was full and happy!! Takorea was a big hit for me!! Hreat food, friendly service and very inexpensive as well. Highest recommendation for this interesting place. If I were staying in this area another day or 2, I might even go back a second time to try a few other of their taco options. Definitely get yourself over to Takorea the next time you are in Atlanta. You'll be happy that you did!! Have a great day!!

Earlier today. I was waiting for my food while @queensempire had 3 different waiters bring her all of this. Smh, hahaha! But it was her prebornday affair so it was all good. I just had that cup of water and some fruit. 🤣🤣 #prebirthday #eating #lunch #food (at Takorea) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1sB3KIBKyj/?igshid=1nxbhi2owahjr

Boardgaming Abroad in the UK
Recently, I went to London on a one week vacation, April 1-5, 2019. It was nice to get away from my day job, but I wasn’t expecting the opportunity to play new games overseas (well, except for the small card game, Oh My Goods! that I brought with me). As it turned out, I ended up spending one night at a board games cafe called Draughts. It was pretty cool! The locals there don’t know how good they’ve got it.
The first cool thing about this place was the location. We arrived at night, and there were rainbow lights on the ceiling of the tunnel where this place was located. I was curious to know what other kinds of establishments were in there, but we came for the games, so we didn’t have time to explore.
Once inside, we found seating right away. The employees were really helpful in explaining how the cafe worked. They said we could eat food, drink beer, and take a look at the games. There was a small fee to play games, but if we didn’t end up playing anything, then we wouldn’t be charged the extra fee. I thought the tables were cleverly designed because they had a shelf underneath the top for storing games. It was easy to keep the game boxes underneath while setting the games up on the tabletop.
We also ordered dinner and drinks while we were there, but we ate before grabbing a game because we didn’t want to get the game all messy. We also thought it would be difficult to set up and learn a new game while dining. Speaking of the food, I thought it was delicious! The Korean sticky chicken, also known as “sticky chicky” back home in Atlanta, was better here than at the place that first introduced me to this sweet & spicy chicken dish (shh, don’t tell Takorea I said that)! I also enjoyed my burger with caramelized onions, even though they only cook burger patties well done instead of mid-rare in London. For drinks, we tried out the Punk IPA and Low Voltage IPA; I preferred the latter because I thought it was more flavorful. I’ve decided that in general, I prefer the rich flavors of American style beers over British brews.
Now, on to the games! Since we arrived for a late dinner, we only had time to learn and play one game. We played Bunny Kingdom. I had been wanting to play this game, even though I heard it was cutthroat. The art is just so adorable! Who doesn’t love bunnies made to look like Napoleon or Indiana Jones? Don’t just take my word for it. See for yourself!
I like card drafting, so I was intrigued by the gameplay here. Although the rules are simple, we managed to make a rules error during play. We made a mistake in how to build new towers. We were supposed to place it on a spot where we already had a bunny, instead of picking any spot we wanted on the board to add a new tower and a bunny. This became evident when the card for the chosen board space was actually drawn during the game. We were confused about how to handle it, and realized we couldn’t have been playing correctly. Once we realized the mistake, we course corrected. I’m glad I got the chance to play, but ultimately I don’t think I’ll add it to my personal games collection. I think it’s meant to be played with more than 2. If I get the opportunity, I’d be happy to try out this game again at a higher player count.
