This man definitely grew up on stories about Rimudo (Genbu celestial warrior Uruki and King of Hokkan) and Takiko (Priestess of Genbu).

I mean he has been fantasizing about the priestess ever since.
ALSO. Hotohori basically knew his country's priestess was gonna pop up in his lifetime bc of the shitshow that is his country (and it happened for Hokkan and Sairou).

Desire
Too often in shoujo mangas, a heroine's sexual desire for their romantic interest is portrayed as "I dont care what you do to me,if it's you" - which is a very passive participation of any sort of interlude. ( It is also conditioning and looking at our own bodies through male gaze and vehicles for male pleasure - something that is treated, even subtly, as something a heroine gives to the romantic interest. I am not saying that doesn't occur in real life and that I don't know women and men who treat their sexual dynamics similarly. It does).
Therefore, I really appreciated when Watase alluded to Takiko'a desire for Rimudo in Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden like this - right when she is in the arms of another man and feels bodily that it is wrong.

Scent, to me, is very explicitly alluding to her sexual desire for him. And it comes from her own agency, and what her own body wants and not ascribing to what romantic leads want out of her or having her body be the passive vehicle. She is as much a participant who feels and wants.

Takiko and Rimudo have an intensely romantic and emotional relationship. But it's moments like this that Watase displays strong mutual sexual attraction that is present between the couple.

Can you tell this couple is one of my OTPs?
Here is a panel where there is both of them and you can just feel that chemistry between them.

I agree with this.
I always found this distressing because it felt in some ways that the story was saying that the love between Takiko and Uruki, Suzuno and Tatara wasn't strong enough of anything compared to Tamahome and Miaka. I don't agree with that.
Especially in the case of Takiko and Uruki. Sadly Takiko was already terminal and wanted to focus on saving the country. Maybe the reason and moral is that you should be selfish AF and you'll get what you want. Takiko denied Uruki, rejected him when he wanted to take their relationship further and it wasn't because she didn't desperately love him, it was because she balanced her love of Uruki and her mission as the Priestess. Meanwhile, for Miaka, her true priestess duties were always an afterthought. She enjoyed Konan but I don't believe Miaka loved Konan and her primary focus as a priestess was Tamahome Tamahome Tamahome. The story did pretty much say that Takiko and Uruki wouldn't have been allowed to stay together anyways. However, I do believe that had Takiko not been terminal, had Uruki and Takiko not been forced to come to terms with her inevitable death, maybe Uruki would have found a way to be with her. Uruki goes on after Takiko's death, never marrying or bearing children, just ruling. Uruki loved Takiko just as much as Tamahome loved Miaka.
Suzuno and Tatara were denied by Byakko to be together. They straight out asked and were told no. But Miaka and Tamahome were allowed to be together? Wtf??? How does that make sense? Even if Suzaku is the God of love, it doesn't seem like they should be powerful enough to affect things in world of the Priestesses. Yet Tamahome appeared there, with full memories and everything because they cast a spell but no spell involving the other world would have worked without Suzakus help. What, did Seiryuu do Suzaku a favor and lend their power to the God of love since both of their priestesses existed within the same space or something? To me it honestly feels as if the story was trying to say that while Suzuno and Tatara loved each other, they didn't love each other enough. We don't know for sure because Watase isn't done with the Byakko arc but.... yeah.
Then let's talk about the ovas for Fushigi Yugi. Maybe I'm the minority but I personally LOATHED the whole Taka Sukunami angle/plot. It was sooooo ridiculous and over the top and it didn't quite fit the original story of Fushigi Yugi. I liked the Eikoden series. That was interesting to me. But with Taka Sukunami I never really understood that in its entirety and I still feel as if ultimately, he wasn't completely Tamahome by the end of it, just my opinion. So did Miaka really end up with her true Tamahome? Who knows?
I personally do think Miaka and Tamahome had true love, but they were fickle and incredibly selfish and obsessed and maybe that was the point?? They were 'true love' because nothing else was as important. Not my favorite way of expressing that...
Honestly, it feels as if the idea is that Miaka and Tamahome are supposed to represent true love, Takiko and Uruki undying love, and Suzuno and Tatara represent love across time and space. But it still doesn't help me understand why Miaka and Tamahome were allowed to be together and Suzuno and Tatara weren't.
Sorry my thoughts were all over the place. I just feel as if all the other priestesses were robbed. I do like Miaka and Tamahome, this wasn't meant to bash them because I am still a fan of theirs. But when I compare them to others like Takiko and Uruki, it's a little hard not to feel annoyed with the blatant favoritism they were shown.
Okay but seriously…
How was it that Miaka was the only priestess who managed to get her wish of “staying together with her fictional boyfriend” while the other priestesses couldn’t and had to wait until death to be reunited with their beloveds?
I mean, I know a lot of people have stated that the reason for all of this is because Suzaku is the god of love, but it just seems off IMO… Especially since they stated in the manga that the priestess is summoned to the UotFGs to summon the beast god and then return to her world… That means ALL OF THEM, MIAKA INCLUDED.
So why did she get the wish and not Takiko and Suzuno?
The Eikouden novel also stated that this was due to Miaka and Tamahome’s love for each other but… Let’s be honest, their love was pretty fickle if you take into consideration all the times they broke up and got back together over dumb things, that and it was also pretty selfish too considering Miaka was supposed to protect the country and she kept putting her love for Tamahome first…
Sorry if I offended any Tamahome x Miaka shippers out there, it wasn’t my intention with this post. But I’d like to see what you Fushigi Yuugi fans think.
Why do you guys think Miaka and Tamahome ended up with a miracle ending to their romance whilst the other priestesses didn’t?

September/October, 2020′s podcast episodes covered FUSHIGI YUUGI: GENBU KAIDEN.
GENBU KAIDEN is Shojo & Tell host Ashley's second-favorite manga (behind only the illustrious MAID-SAMA), and so, these episodes have several special guests. Caitlin (OG FUSHIGI YUGI superfan), Sara Linsley (manga letterer extraordinaire), and Zahra Ymer (manga scholar in training), and Ashley discuss how the series compares to its predecessor, pick apart Watase's sidebar notes (she thinks she'd be Tomite if she were a boy?!), fawn over Uruki / Limdo and Takiko (okay, that's mostly Ashley), and discover that all the good guys in this manga are basically serial killers.

Uruki/Takiko for the ask meme!
anon you’re my new fave person for asking me this (especially since I’m currently re-reading Genbu Kaiden and I have so many feels)
Who was the one to propose: Uruki, idk what the tradition is in Hokkan/Bêi-Jîa but I do think Takiko, a girl from 1920′s Japan, would probably expect a man to propose - plus Uruki would get help from all the other Genbu Seishi and Filka and it’d be the most romantic thing (this after Genbu has been summoned and Takiko totally lives and lives happily in Hokkan/Bêi-Jîa with Uruki and NO ONE DIES)
Who stressed more over wedding planning: they both are in their own ways, Uruki about the ceremony and how everything will go and Takiko more about what comes after (she’d be the freaking empress!!!)
Who decorated the house: given that they live in the palace in Touran/Tèwulán, the Rowun ancestors did most of the work but both Uruki and Takiko would add their own touches (probably getting help from the other Genbu Seishi and Filka)
Who does the cooking: they’re royalty, they have a cook (but I do think sometimes Takiko would make Japanese snacks, okonomiyaki, and stuff)
Who is more organized: probably Takiko, I think she’s been raised that way and given that she took after the household after her mother fell ill and father was who knows where gathering writing reference, she knows how to manage shit
Who’s the cuddler: they both are
Who’s the big spoon/little spoon: Uruki is big spoon, Takiko is the little, generally
What’s their favorite non-sexual activity: travelling around the country, meeting their subjects, and learning about their lives so that they can be as efficient rulers as possible
Who comes home drunk at 3am: this sounds like Uruki xD
Who kills the spiders: the palace doesn’t have spiders lmao
Who falls asleep first: depends a lot, usually Uruki after a long day in court but Takiko has equally taxing tasks as the empress so she’d be very tired too
A headcanon: Takiko sings “The Song of the Gondola” when their first child, a daughter, is born
Who has the most patience?: definitely Takiko
Their relationship summed up in a gif:

Hi there lovely translator! Have you read the Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden Manga? I'm a 90's anime oldie fan lmao. Takiko and Uruki's love story is far betteeeeer than Miaka and Tamahome's. Still love this 2 pairs though! Do ya agreee or nahhh?
Yeah.
Tbh, I’m not a big fan of Fushigi Yuugi, but to make a long story short, rather than the love story itself being better, I think the characterization is what’s better in Genbu Kaiden. And I guess that’s understandable, since the author was more experienced then.

F, S, X 🙂
F: probably 3 years of Wizardess Heart fandom
S: headcanons... I'm bad at these 😭 maybe Lacan learns about the stuffed form of Rembrandt and Felix, so he copies them and the three of them would hold a small party?
X: I love otps!
Tokiya x Otoya from Utapri (I know it's not canon, but I love them)
Erudian x Yerenica from "seduce the villain’s father" (I love so much their interactions! 😍💖)
Uruki x Takiko from "Fushigi Yuugi genbu kaiden" (I still cry over their happy ending 😭)
