Takano Yuuta: The Plot Device
I decided to do a bit of analysis on this adorkable side character who is…well developed at first, only to be thrown aside forever.
Spoilers ahoy!
Please also note that I don't have 100% understanding of Messiah Project. Feel free to correct me on any misinformations.
Let's go over his appearances one by one:
1. Shibi no Shou
Takano was first introduced as Shirazaki Mamoru's partner in Public Security Bureau Section 4, a goofier, less morally straight officer compared to Shirazaki. From how Takano joked around Shirazaki to how Shirazaki confided in Takano before his execution, it's safe to assume that these two have formed a pretty close friendship, though not close enough to be on last name basis.
We learnt more about his character when sudden twist of event caused Shirazaki to be on the chopping block. Takano, who believed in his partner's innocence, went to plead a former terrorist Misu Kimitoshi to intervene somehow and save Shirazaki. His reason? Because he believed Shirazaki is a necessary existence to the country's security.
“I don’t know...The police these days have very bad mouth and can easily beaten and then introduces himself formally and kowtowing, isn’t that too fast? Aren’t you guys the pillar of this country?!” -Misu Kimitoshi
Sure, Shirazaki was introduced as the ace of the section 4, but to call him the messiah of the world is a bit… over exaggerating. But it shows how desperate Takano is to save Shirazaki, and the extent to which Takano respected him. Takano was willing to literally put his own life in line by associating with a former terrorist to sabotage the law. He mentioned to Misu how he was too powerless to do anything. But he was not so powerless as to just sit there and watch his friend die.
Takano is the unsung hero of this entire story. He may be incompetent, but if there is one thing you can count on him, it's his loyalty.
2. Eisei no Shou
This is where things get a bit…weird. The Public Security scouted our two former terrorists Misu and Amane into the section 4 and under Takano's supervision. Since Takano was greatly indebted to them in Shibi, Takano would be the least discriminating person in the office, right?
Haha no. Takano was the first to bring up Misu and Amane's status as former terrorist just because they have more information on things. When Misu and Amane offered to cover for the shooting of a Northern Union spy, Takano's first instinct was to think that they want to get promoted for being heroic. What the hell?
Why would Takano have any reason to be bitter towards these two? Sure, they kinda treat Takano like a toy dog, but these are the people who had saved Shirazaki, the guys Takano had pleaded to for his dear partner's life!
"Show me the one thing you’re very good at. DOGEZA!” -Amane Yasuchika, while pointing his gun at Takano for lulz.
And that last part. Takano quipping to Misu and Amane about how they just wanted to be promoted when they tried to save Takano's ass. Takano, who had begged for a terrorist's help because he believed Misu and Amane were not bad people, who even had received their kind help, is now doubting it?
Even Takano himself seems to be doubting his own words
The only justification I can come up with is the fact that Shirazaki went missing right after the whole Shibi fiasco, and that Takano might be blaming Misu and Amane for it. It got debunked quickly when I recall how Takano was right there when Misu and Amane fought against the police escorting Shirazaki away to his execution.
Takano's nose would have remembered it.
Since that doesn't work, my other justification is that the story needed a conflict for Misu and Amane about their status as former terrorists, and they couldn't be bothered to introduce a new character for it, so they throw it to Takano instead. After all, Takano regained his respect for the two in the end, so we're back to normal, right?
This is where I'm starting to believe Takano's role is just to advance the plot.
3. Hagane no Shou
While he was mostly a bumbling incompetent idiot of a police, there was a scene where he asked Tsutsumi Reiji about Shirazaki’s whereabouts. When Reiji told him Shirazaki is ‘neither dead nor alive’ and asked him whether Takano really wanted to know, Takano decided to pass.
“There are things that you are better off not knowing, even in Section 4″
Again, this is the Takano went all the way to beg a former terrorist to save his life. While I agree that your partner’s life is none of your business, Takano had shown that he is not afraid of delving into the darker side of things when his partner’s wellbeing is involved. Now he suddenly chicken out because he was told his partner is ‘neither alive nor dead’? Even Shirazaki who is going to be executed qualify as ‘neither dead nor alive’.
And this begins the weird buildup to Shinku no Shou.
4. Shinku no Shou
Two words. The. Ending.
A very rushed attempt to wrap up Shirazaki-Takano side plot.
So his role started with him offering his place as shelter for Misu and the very troubled Amane. Before that, he was actually refusing Misu's request for help, but had a change of heart after seeing Amane's state. We can see that Takano has somewhat regained his characterization back, the brave heart who is willing to risk his own life for those he held dear (or to return the debt from Shibi no Shou)
“Didn’t I tell you ‘we’ will protect him?”
Turns out it wasn't okay, because an actual terrorist organization raided his place in search for Amane. Takano who is very, very incompetent, got caught quickly, was gagged and blindfolded for some reason, and was used as a hostage against Misu, Amane and the SAKURA cadets. Shirazaki exclaimed Takano's name in surprise, which caused Takano to realize that Shirazaki was there and not dead. He proceeded to frantically chase after Shirazaki and… immediately let him go.
The sun must be damn hot that day
Compare this actual rooftop scene:
Takano: “Hold up Shirazaki!!”
Shirazaki:”I think you’ve gotten the wrong person. I’m not the person you think I am.”
Takano: “Then, Shirazaki! If you meet Shirazaki Mamoru, please tell him this. I’m glad to have been paired with Shirazaki. I was angry at one point when you suddenly disappeared, but still, I’m glad to have met you. This is the path that you have chosen, so I won’t say anything. But I hope we can meet again one day. When that time comes...next time--”
Shirazaki: “I will tell him if I meet him.”
To this:
Takano: “Hold up Shirazaki...!!”
Shirazaki: ”I think you’ve gotten the wrong person. I’m not the person you think I am.”
Takano: “... Then, please just tell me this. Are you okay with this?”
Shirazaki: “...”
Takano: “Please answer me, Shirazaki!”
Shirazaki: “...I’m not Shirazaki.”
Takano: “I see... Alright, I won’t say anything. It’s the path that you have chosen after all. Thank you for everything, Shirazaki. I’m glad to have been paired with you.”
Shirazaki: “... Me too. Goodbye, Takano.”
I’m not saying the one I wrote is better, but I think it sticks truer to his character, simply because Takano doesn’t launch into a tirade of expository on his relationship with Shirazaki. There is no hint about how Takano is ready to move on besides the scene he had with Misu, in which he also launched into a tirade of expository of ‘as long as Shirazaki’s okay, I’m fine with it’.
One does not overcome one-sided attachment in a second.
Takano the third fourth wheel
Right from the start, Takano's main role is pretty much just to get the story going, and comic relief. He makes sure the main character Shirazaki is saved in Shibi no Shou. In Eisei no Shou, he provided a mini conflict to Misu and Amane, and cemented his place as Misu and Amane's 911. He fulfilled his role as Misu and Amane's 911 in Shinku no Shou, and then the ending just got dropped over his head. There seems to be no sign of him returning to Messiah anymore now that Shirazaki has graduated and Misu and Amane will follow very soon.
His one sheer redeeming quality is the extent of things he is willing to do for his friends, which is pretty consistent throughout his appearances. What is inconsistent is how much he regards the people around him. Did he ever consider himself indebted to Misu and Amane, at all? Is he biased against terrorist, or he has a keener eye for people beyond their labels? What is Shirazaki to Takano, a moral stick that 'is indispensable to the country’ as he said it, his treasured partner, or someone-whom-Takano-thought-was-a-friend-but-is-actually-just-a-co-worker-with-mutual-respects?
Guess that explains why Takano isn’t Shirazaki’s messiah.
Takano the actual third wheel
To conclude, Takano does things for plot.
(And plot, in return, is kind to him. How else did he get off scot free from not only failing to escort Shirazaki to his execution but also permanently losing track of that person, considering he was the person in charge, and that he was Shirazaki’s partner?!)
“I don’t need (your help) Hell if I know” ~Takano Yuuta

‘Top 10′ Messiah scenes
a.k.a I went though a bit of nostalgia trip by rewatching (read:skimming through) every Messiah series and list down the first scenes that rewatch in its entirety.
Warning: they’re probably not what you’re expecting.
Dou no Shou:
The opening. Yep.
I think Dou no Shou has the best camera work out of all Messiah stages. This opening is simple compared to the subsequent series, but the brilliant editing successfully turn it into something very special. Each character introduction is done in such a way that allows you to admire the actors up close in all their glory, and we still get to see Messiah’s beautiful action choreography.
Also Dou no Shou is choke full of gems it’s best enjoyed in one sitting :D
Shikkoku no Shou:
I don’t have any particular scene that I am super fond of, but this was the first thing that caught my eye and it totally made my day XD
Higayama: “As expected it’s not that easy of a cipher.”
Pardon my lack of cipher knowledge but I believe Higayama is hiring someone to decipher this code that has a width=“80″ and height=“80″, no border, consisting of bullet points with pictures that are named ‘FREE WORLD’ and ‘lilyhol -omitted-’
higayamahiremeinstead
Hakugin no Shou:
Shuusuke: “One thing...There is something I would like to ask. What is SAKURA exactly?”
Ichijima: “Hmm, what a peculiar question. You have existed as SAKURA at the level of its leader so to ask such question now of all times, I find it very peculiar.”
Maoooooo TT.TT
Kinda weird how my fondest memory of Hakugin is actually about this scene. Part of it maybe because I’m biased towards Ichijima. But the other part is definitely because this conversation highlights the beauty of SAKURA. Rarely do Messiah go meta, and this is that one rare gem.
Also Ichijima’s asshole personality is so wonderfully displayed and countered by Shuusuke here, it’s lovely <3
Shibi no Shou:
Obvious giveaway answer:
I’ve ranted and translated the entire scene in another post, so I looked around for another scene that caught my interest.
Misu: “I don’t know...Police these days have stupid looking nose got thrown around introduced himself formally and kowtowing. Aren’t you guys supposed to be the pillars of the country!?”
Shibi despite being kinda underrated for being the first series that introduce new characters and the only series that explore the world outside SAKURA, did such a damn good job in making sure Messiah Project lived for another day.
In this particular scene, we have Misu the former terrorist and Takano the police, the two polar opposites that you would expect to kill each other at first sight. And through this scene we are showed that it’s never black and white in Messiah. And that Shuuto is a freaking good actor.
(After writing this I realized that I’ve translated this exact same bit in my Takano Yuuta analysis. I guess my taste hasn’t changed one bit lol)
Eisei no Shou:
Eiri: “Ariga, can I talk to you for a bit?”
Haku: “Shirasaki, you’re with me.”
Yuuri: “What is that about?”
Mamiya: “Beats me.”
“Give the new couple a room” by HakuEiri
Hisui no Shou:
I love every single scene with Misu in Hisui, but nothing can beat the two best action actors in Messiah history going face to face.
Hagane no Shou:
The ending.
- At the start of Hagane, at the bottom of the stage Mamiya began playing his violin and Ariga was training at the top of the stage. - At the end, their positions switched because Mamiya...happened. - HOW THE CREDIT SONG ENDED ABRUPTLY. JUST LIKE MAMIYA’S VIOLIN. JUST LIKE MAMIYA. *TEARS GUSHING* - THAT FINAL STARE ARIGA AND MAMIYA ‘SHARED’ BEFORE THE SCREEN FADED TO BLACK. *NIAGARA FALLS TEARS*
THE BEST CREDIT EVER IN THE ENTIRE MESSIAH HISTORY. nuff said.
Shinku no Shou:
Yuuri: “Are you kidding me--!”
The scenes in the barbershop are lovely, starting from this hide and seek, to the conversation later with Misu. I guess it has something to do with Messiah feeling not like Messiah, chilling and having a lighthearted chitchat by Messiah standard (while praying the barber won’t cut your throat poor Misu XD).
Akatsuki no Toki:
Bias:
Salyut: “Those eyes and that look. That. Looks like I’ll be enjoying it today.”
This is my favorite scene for so many reasons~ - The very sexy way James delivered that line above. - Ariga gets to show his old stance. - The fighting scene is top notch, arguably the 2 best action guys Messiah currently has. - Also arguably the 2 best looking guys Messiah currently has. The fact that they’re like doppelgänger is a huge plus. - The song’s pretty neat - Kogure being damsel. His petite form, his pretty high voice, his rather femine stature, Kogure is so 110% damsel material XD
Non bias:
Ariga: “Since when have I become this weak?!!”
Kagami: “Since you acknowledge this man as your Messiah”
Solely for those two lines above (+ the music). Character development has not been so simple yet so strong since Shibi. It’s really nice.
Polar Night:
Ichijima: “It seems that you have not gotten used to it yet.”
This is foreshadowing done right, Messiah version. It sets up the later plot with Ariga and Mamiya, and it is definitely building up Mayo’s backstory. It also gives us audience enough things to speculate about: the leaves, why Mayo seemed feverish, how Ichijima knows all of this...
In short, subtle scenes are the best XD
