skip to loafer chapter 51 // discussion

since the chapter is out right now, being raws and the translation, i won't be posting many screenshots as i usually do in respect of everyone. there being said, i want to talk about some things that happened in this chapter!!! also, i'm not calling it an analyze because i think i want to discuss about it more than analyzing it, if that makes sense. anyways, here we go!

this chapter really feels like a road trip, doesn't it? the pacing, the excitement, even the car seats arrangement. there's such a summer and youth vibes to it and that makes me so, so happy and excited for what's to come! i think that, in the end, two characters were the star of chap 51: maharu and nao.

want to talk about maharu first. at first, i was really surprised by her reaction, but wasn't the narrative building up to this? maharu has been showing signs of insecurity since some chapters ago, so it makes total sense, in my head for her to act like that, for a lot of reasons the most important one is the insecurity of being a small town girl when surrounded by people from the city. maharu is a girl who's starting her teenage years, so it's normal for her to see everything as "cooler than her" or that her traditions are less than people from tokyo.

and, hidden underneath this insecurity, she's facing two weird feelings. 1. the idea that her sister is changing and starting to become "a city girl" (since she was the only one who was "well put" while having lunch). 2. her sister's friends, which i have a little suspicious that she knows that them are helping mitsumi to buy her things that would suit her better. and finally 3. the jealously of having all the attention focused on her sister. i mean, she's also having problems! she's also changing! she's a teenager, she wants attention!!

mitsumi is changing, so is maharu. she's feels like she's losing importance, that mitsumi is no long part of their life style and that all her friends are "too good to be there". it's a ride, specially for a girl who's starting to feel the teenage hormones acting up.

and now, the other character that needs a spotlight: nao. it was widely known that nao hasn't come back since she transitioned. her hometown brings her a lot of dark memories and dealing with her family wasn't all that easy. who can imagine what's going to happen when she's finally back? and well, would you look at that: not only nao received a pleasant surprise, but us as well. that doesn't mean the scars are healed or that she's feeling 100% fine and safe there, but just the small step into recognition means more than words can explain.

general thoughts about the chapter:

mika being the one to first realize that something is wrong between shimamitsu really came as a surprise to me!! i know i made a lot of jokes about this before, but i was sure fumi would be the first one to catch that, and not one of the tokyo girls.

this makes me feel like we're closer and closer to mitsumi finally opening up to the girls and shima facing some criticism aside from his internal ones. this might result in a loot of outcomes, but i know that sensei have the perfect one hidden on her sleeve.

about shima (since we all know i'm a shima maniac), other than that, my suspicions about him not telling his mother about the trip is starting to grow. i mean, we never really saw nao talking to her, he didn't brought a gift (we know that his mother would never let that happen), so it all feels so sus to me...but also, on a lighter note, it's the first time he's visiting a friend's house (that isn't chris or mukai, people he grew up with). i mean, he never had that!! he never thought it would be possible!!! how amazing is that for him!!! (aside from the heartbreak scene he saws...)

the wallet scene is a focal point of the chapter, and this opens a lot of future resolutions involving shima. it's kind of a smaller moment in the bigger picture, but his face after seeing maharu storming out tells a lot to me, in a way. he can clearly see how hurt mitsumi is, even tho she's trying to fake it. all i wish right now is that he takes a step further and talk to her about this, give her some sort of comfort. he knows how important that moment (buying the wallet, i mean) was to her, and now he just saw with his own two eyes what happened, so i really hope he takes a step in. i truly do.

this could lead to a more mukai focused chapter, hear me out: with shima and mitsumi relationship being weird right now, it's obvious that, even if shima comforts her, things won't be normal for a while. they will both hide what happened and i have a feeling that mukai will be the one to caught on that. why? because he's the one who can have a better grasp on shima's bullshit. it won't give us a huge mukai lore but hmmmm...idk it's just a feeling. i can be very very wrong and that's totally fine, but my mind is twirling around this...

now if we're talking about fumi...:

i think a lot can happen, honestly. if sensei is thinking about focusing on maharu a little more, i can see maharu thinking fumi isn't by her side as well, which is a plausible outcome given the feelings that maharu has been dealing with.

if fumi takes maharu side, many different outcomes can happen. mitsumi and her can have a little discussion (nothing too hard, but it would make both feel very sad ofc) and mitsumi would have a little self conscious moment that she isn't giving the proper attention to her family and old friends.

if we think about fumi also being jealous, it can still have an outcome like the scenario i mentioned above or the meeting doesn't go as well as we were expecting. it's a thought moment to really focus on, since we didn't had any fumi thought yet, just a little glimpse.

can't wait to see what's waiting for us, can't wait to see all of them at the beach. i had a little bit of interaction between nao and shima (which you all know means A LOT to me) and now i can finally have my baby fumi meeting all of them. i'm so happy it feels surreal, in a way

OOO I FOUND IT! I know I learned about it in history class, it was the Amago clan of ninjas 🥷 that had that saying “Those who desire only technique will never understand it's everything beyond that”. And here’s two quotes by Sensei Toshitsugu Takamatsu also known as ‘The Last Shinobi’: “How difficult is life when one is not surprised by anything and laughing, everyday.” And “Knowing that disease and disaster are natural parts of life is the key to overcoming adversity with a calm and happy spirit.”

It was one of Sensei Takamatsu’s lessons about keeping spiritual peace and balance while not letting internal darkness consume one’s life. (Hope you don’t mind me doing themed quotes, I find traditional ninjas and samurai, especially their lessons and proverbs, fascinating😅).

Feeling of one of your tiny hands grabbing onto his servo, clinging to him.

• That prickling, fiery feeling is a tide washing over you in waves, stealing your breath when it crashes over you and leaving you trembling in agony when it washes out. “Make it stop,” you manage, pressing your face against that giant hand as the sensation tears you apart again, shredding you into nothing but suffocating pain. “Please.”

• “You’ll be okay,” he promises, lying to you, because he has no idea what’s happening. Spark twisting at the agony in your words, there’s nothing he can do but run a servo against your spine in what he hopes is a comforting touch as he enters the medbay. Ratchet looks up from where he’s sterilizing tools when he enters. “I can’t fix this,” he whispers, holding out his caged hands, because he can feel the way your heart beat shifts into something frantic and wild with every time you clench into a tighter ball. Those little, pained noises you’re making going right through him.

• “Where’d that one come from?” Ratchet groans, reaching to accept your little form and he’s almost reluctant to give you up as crazy as it is, you’re just clinging to him like he’s the only thing keeping you together. Hovering as Ratchet lifts you from his hands and reaches for a scanner to pass over you as the shaking gets worse. Eyes opening and finding him, little hand trembling and reaching out for him.

• There’s two of them now. You’re dimly aware of the first one explaining how you’d just appeared, but everything is so fragmented, pain breaking you apart piece by piece. And then there’s panic choking you, until you’re reaching for the first one. The one with that soft, soothing voice and gentle hands. Wanting to ask him to not leave you here, please, don’t leave you alone, but unable to focus enough to say any of it. But then he’s reaching for you as the other one frowns, extending a huge servo to you and in your fear, you latch onto him, the only thing even slightly familiar amid the pain.

• You curl yourself around his servo, pressing your face against him. Needing him and he stills as the shaking eases and you slump into an exhausted sleep. “Best guess it has to do with however they got here,” Ratchet says as he studies his scanner. “Rodimus already alerted me that he found another one, so you’ll have to look after that one.”

• “You can fix this,” he says, spark twisting uneasily as he carefully accepts you back from Ratchet, aware of how fragile you feel in his servos. “Ratchet?” That look the medic levels at him is answer enough, but it’s not the one he wants as his attention dips to you.

As you can see, Mika and Mukai are on the same wavelength 🤭 They get upset about the same thing, namely Sousuke's behavior.

Mika and Mukai are characters I particularly love because they're both analytical types, especially about Sousuke.

They both understand that Sousuke's popularity and consideration make it difficult for others to refuse him any request. As a result, Sousuke doesn't necessarily have the reflex to think about how others might feel in this kind of situation.

The further we go, the more I'm convinced that Takamatsu sensei intends to make the Mikamukai a reality. Which would make me extremely happy, because they are perfect for each other 💛

This arc has sister drama, old friend meets new friend, mitsumi still adjusting and changing how she interacts with shima since the break up leading to her holding back her emotions in front of him. The parallel between Shima’s expectations with him giving his brother a gift vs Mitsumi’s sisters reaction. Shima’s considerate side being shown and to nao 🥺 nao’s mom accepting her and asking her to bring her super chill bf home next time.. the drama and spice of two friends having secrets about the same boy (will they confide in each other and the whole girl group?). The insecurity of growing up and perceiving your laid back family and non aesthetic home as inferior or lame. Beloved family dog meets his human form. Mitsumi pulling on Nao’s arm and always being her extra support in times where identity may be questioned. Nao being a super sweet and caring aunt trying to make sure the kids stay safe, talking to the parents, all bc she cares for her niece’s happiness despite having her own insecurities about Mitsumi’s lovely youth experience compared to her own (as expressed in ch 33).

I absolute love how takamatsu-sensei is always so meticulous with writing her characters and always so worried about making sure they feel as real as possible. by exposing their flaws and working on it, she's showing how human they are and how they are learning and growing each day. this will connect so many different people to skip to loafer because everyone will be able to see themselves in one character or more, no matter what. it's not just a story about teenagers learning about life and growing, but a story that is able to connect people from all ages and make them reflect a little more about themselves. how many times have I stopped to think "wow, this makes me feel so seen" and made me want to explore more of this side of myself? or how many times people came to me and said they relate so much with X character and finally feel free to open up or just found the comfort they were looking for?

Minato's Laundromat 2 Ep 9 Stray Thoughts

Last week, we went to an onsen! Shu made Asuka study, and Minato made everyone awkward. We missed a golden opportunity for some hot spring action (unlike Be Mine, Superstar), but Minato got drunk enough to admit that he doesn’t want Shin to leave and wants Shin to call him Asuka. We make progress in this show, but it’s so slow. I ache for Minato and Shin. At least Asuka seems to be settling into his dynamic with Shu.

Oh my. Shin’s 19th birthday is coming up. Of course Shin suggests they stay together forever as his birthday gift.

Noting that Shin has not switched to calling him Akira yet.

Aww the swim team made a card for Minato and all thanked him.

I wish I had time to support my old school’s Academic Games team. This is making me nostalgic.

I’m glad Minato has been able to develop a functional relationship with Sakuma-sensei because Sakuma’s open sentimentality is really so beneficial.

Okay, besties, I’m gonna be honest. I have been really patient with Minato’s slow progress because I see so much of myself in him. However, I despise amnesia plots in romance dramas. Only Jack o’ Frost has ever done this in a way I genuinely appreciated. I understand the dramatic tool this presents, because now Minato is the one with stronger feelings than Shin and the new dynamic forces Minato to be the one who pursues him. Still, it has always felt contrived and stupid to me. I am not happy about this development.
