「小さきもの」から近代再考

（前略）「小さきもの」���見つめる原点は、１８歳で入った熊本の結核療養所にあった。敗戦後の一時期、共産党員となり、療養所でも革命の夢を説いた。そんな若者の姿を見守った年長の患者たちは、病状が進んでもお互いを冗談の種にして笑い、やがて静かに死を受け入れていった。

　療養所を出てのち、思想家の吉本隆明と出会い、人は育って結婚し子どもを育て死ぬだけでよい、そういう平凡な存在がすべての価値の基準なのだと教えられた。かつての結核患者たちの姿が重なった。

（中略）カネも肩書も間に挟まず、人と人が本当の意味で出会うことを求め続けた。晩年も執筆のかたわら、熊本の若い友人たちに呼びかけて文芸誌「アルテリ」を立ち上げるなど、人と人をつなぐことを喜んだ。
