In recording videos of early Morning Musume and Taiyou to Ciscomoon songs you can see Tsunku really got the girls to do inflections in their singing that was unnatural and didn't make sense to them and took some of them several takes to land. But the end result was a unique way of singing that gave Hello!Project its unique sound. For example T&C's members struggled with the 'Dakishimete' part of Gatimekira because it's pronounced DA-KI-SHI-ME-TE and Tsunku wanted it pronounced DAKU-SHII-ME-TE. Or with "Momoiro Katamoi" he made Ayaya pronounce the subtle ん sound in front of "Momoiro" which was a homage to 70s kayokyoku singers. Those little but subtle changes made H!P idols' singing stand out and give it that Tsunku twist. It was his unique worldview/musicality that created those inflections so they can't be replicated. I'm starting to see why Maa was so adamant about protecting that musicality in H!P because now that we're in an era where most of the idols have never worked with him, the singing comes off generic and without that H!P vibe. The loss of Tsunku's voice wasn't just losing his background harmonies and vocals in songs, it's the loss of the style that makes H!P quintessentially H!P. And in an era where there are so many idol groups, that's the loss of something to set them apart from everyone.
