Tails of Iron - Blast Review
Developer: Odd Bug Games Rrp: £21.99 (Humble, Steam and Epic)
How best to sum this game up succinctly? Well the opening line on the games Steam page covers it pretty well “Tails of Iron is an epic RPG adventure with punishingly brutal combat.” Having played this game, yeah I can very much agree with that statement.
In this Redwall-esq world, you play as a rat named Redgi. Redgi is no simple rat though, he's a prince and he's prince that's on a mission to take back his kingdom from the invading forces of the Frog clans.
It has to be said that this game takes a lot of cues from Hollow Knight, originally I was going to say Dark Souls series but after much consideration I believe this game takes more inspiration from Hollow Knight than any of the Fromsoft games. Such as using benches to rest at and the equipment system being very easy to understand. The combat is a much more considered affair, requiring you to pay attention to the enemies cues to work out when to dodge, parry or strike. Doing any one of these too late or too early can result in very dire circumstances very quickly.
I love the artstyle the developers have used to give the game the look of an illuminated manuscript. I especially like the Clangers style whistle used by the characters to communicate while the symbolic speech bubble appears. Of course, not all the conversation is like that, thoughout the game you'll hear a narrator speak what's on Redgis mind in English. I suppose it was too much to ask for the game to stick to the speech bubbles and clanger whistles.
Definitely a great game, a bit short when compared to the likes of Hollow Knight but absolutely well worth it.

I wrote about Tails of Iron (the rodent Soulslike) and the way fantasy game royalty tropes impact its narrative. Check it out if you like Souls games, genre examination, or dodge-rolling rats.
Or if you hate frogs, I guess.

Actually booted up the PlayStation I’ve not played it in awhile tbh but decided to check out what games were available. The library is so large it always makes it hard to pick. I found one called Tails Of Iron and I think I’m gonna like it, I mean I’m already enjoying it but yeah I’m just a tiny little rat boi and I love it. Sometimes I’m really picky and fussy about games I feel like I can get tired or bored easily or like because my attention span isn’t always 100% I can’t really play games that are harder to put down and pick up months later. I like games that are more idk the right word for it but think like stardew valley and slime rancher I do like other genres especially just the ‘I’m gonna go and just kill a bunch of things mindlessly’ kinda action games. But I find it really hard to pick what to play I’m so indecisive but so far it seems pretty good. I almost went for Stray or at the moment they are offering a one hour free trial of Cult Of The Lamb and was gonna try that out because I don’t wanna buy games really without playing them because I’m so adksjdlja about picking up and actually playing games it’s why I got the PlayStation subscription with the massive library because it’ll save me money in the long run and I get to try out tons of games without worrying about if I buy it I’ll be wasting money if I like barely play it. Kade was playing a bit of Skyrim earlier and I might try and play that again I played it briefly years ago on our old PlayStation if I did I’d definitely make a Khajit. He’s not convinced me on Dragon Age Inquisiton just yet but we’ll see maybe I’ll try it out eventually.

Continuing my campaign in Tails of Iron tonight!
This stream will be focused on Redgi as he seeks to restore his throne. With the kitchen and smithing area salvaged a king can't let their main hall stay in disrepair!

Anthropomorphic Characters Play an Exciting Adventure in Tails of Iron Expansion
Tails of Iron expansion Bright Fir Forest is free for the RPG adventure game on Linux, Steam Deck, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to Odd Bug Studio who have really brought this exciting adventure to life. Available on both Steam and Humble Store. Have you heard about the latest expansion for Tails of Iron? It's called 'Bright Fir Forest', and it's free to play on both Linux and Steam Deck. Not to mention a new part of this adventure where you play as anthropomorphic characters, which means they're animals like rats and squirrels but act like humans. The main character you play is Rat King Redgi. The story picks up after the big events of the original story, and this time Redgi gets an invite from the Squirrels to join the Festival of Leaf Fall. But, as you might guess, things don't go as planned. A new enemy, who's out for revenge, threatens to spoil the festival. In 'Bright Fir Forest', there are 13 new quests you can embark on. This includes four main story quests and nine side quests. Each of these quests will challenge you with tough bosses that you'll need to defeat. One of the best parts of this Tails of Iron expansion is that it takes you to Castle Drey, which is the ancestral home of the Squirrels. There's also the Mole Arena where Redgi has to face three new challengers. Now, let's talk about the gear and customization. In this expansion, you have a lot more choices in terms of weapons and armor in Tails of Iron – 96 new items in total. This means you can make Redgi your own by choosing the best equipment for your play style. Plus, you can also spruce up Redgi’s home, The Crimson Keep, with eight new cosmetic upgrades.

Music and sound are a big part of any playing experience, and 'Bright Fir Forest' adds four new tracks to its soundtrack. Plus, for those who like achieving things, there are three extra achievements to unlock. Apart from this new expansion, Tails of Iron itself is also quite a game. It was first released in July 2021 and in a tough world where Rats and Frogs are at war. As Redgi, you're trying to reclaim your kingdom and defeat the Frog Clan. The game is known for its challenging combat and engaging story, narrated by the award-winning actor Doug Cockle. There's a lot of depth in how you can customize Redgi and various side quests to earn extra gold. If you like crafting, you can find special blueprints to forge new and powerful weapons. Plus, the bosses you'll face are seriously tough. Also, Tails of Iron has another expansion called 'Bloody Whiskers', which was the first free post-campaign content. And, for those who like to collect, the 'Crimson Knight' DLC on Steam, which was previously exclusive to the physical edition, is now available separately. Priced at $1.99 USD / £1.69 / 1,99€. This DLC also has new armor skins, weapon skins, shield skins, and helmet skins. The game and its expansions are available on Steam and Humble Store, so you can jump right into this adventure. Priced at $24.99 USD / £21.99 / 24,99€. Along with support for Linux, Steam Deck, Mac, and Windows PC.

I put this Tails of Iron game off for a long time because I read some middling review of it, but it's pretty fun. Kind of small scale, Redwall-tinged Soulslike, gathering gear, doing dodge rolls and trying to stab stuff in the butt, the whole classic formula. I wish it had a leveling system, but hey, you can't have everything you want.
Are rats and frogs natural enemies? Is that something about nature I didn't know? I don't understand why they're frogs.
