Digimon Adventure Drama CD 1 (Character Song + Mini Drama 1)

I almost forgot about drama CDs! Digimon has a whole bunch of them, it turns out. Looks like I get to cling onto the Adventure cast for a little bit longer. This CD is a combination of very short drama bits and character image songs, as the name suggests. It feels a bit on the short side but I guess that's because it's only part one ;)

A very silly story about Taichi and Sora fighting a potato digimon (Jagamon) during home ec class. Very esoteric references to 1970s anime are made.

I liked that this was just Taichi and Sora. I know that was probably more of a budgeting thing, but one-on-one moments (even dumb ones like this) are important to me.

There's something icky about Taichi commanding Agumon to digivolve just for his amusement...poor little guy

Favorite part of this was all of the meta jokes about this being an audio drama. For example, when they introduce Jagamon the narrator's like "well...we can't show you what he looks like, but he looks like a potato just trust me bro"

I had to look up who Ikkyuu-san was. At least the one Japanese commenter on the YouTube video understood the reference lol.

Image Song 1 - Turn Courage Into Wings (Yagami Taichi)

A somewhat generic, but very Taichi song. (When it comes down to it, Taichi is a pretty generic shounen guy). Of course it focuses on courage because that's Taichi's thing.

At first the "you" mentioned in song was supposed to be a romantic interest and then I realized he could be singing platonically to Agumon or Yamato. I like the Agumon option best, that's really cute.

Takeuchi Sora's Fluttering Yellow Card

This was less of a drama and more of a little radio DJ-like snippet featuring Sora and Piyomon. Sora's VA is apparently a DJ IRL so this was an in-joke.

Mimi asks Sora where her hat came from and she just say "I don't know!" lolwut. I'm not sure if this segment is supposed to be in character or in some sort of weird "behind-the-scenes" world where the characters are aware they're in an anime. Seems like the latter.

Image Song 2 - Tomorrow I'll Be...(Takeuchi Sora)

Damn, Sora's song was pretty dark. It did have a tinge of hopefulness, but mostly it sounded like she was singing about depression/existentialism being temporary. Kind of like a "this too shall pass" song. :(

She sings about how she feels like she has no one to fight for and has lost sight of her dreams. This fits in with that one arc where she despaired over "love" being her crest because it didn't suit her. I think we all know that feeling of being lonely in a crowd, even a crowd of friends. This song helped me appreciate Sora's character a little more.

Joe's Singer Debut!? (Parts 1 & 2)

I like how these skits introduce the character image songs, that's a really cute idea. These characters aren't singers in-universe (except for Mimi), so I guess they wanted to give context for why they're singing haha.

Part 1 is Gomamon suggesting songs for Joe to sing and performing little samples. Very cute. (Of course, he can't really sing well lol, but that adds to the charm).

Part 2 is the studio rep explaining that the next drama CD will be about a love triangle between Mimi, Koushiro, and Hikari. That sounds like a terrible idea. No chemistry between either pair if you ask me...Maybe that's the joke though.

Image Song 3 - There's Another Me (Kido Jou)

This song was all about Joe facing and overcoming his insecurities and fear of risks. He talks about how you'll never grow if you completely avoid pain of any kind. Honestly, a pretty inspirational song for kids out there. I can definitely relate to Joe's timidity. I'm always avoiding getting out of my comfort zone which has held me back in some ways.

I am currently watching "Would you like a Cup of Coffee?" on Netflix, a K-drama about a very charming, calming mentor-mentee slice of life story that makes you appreciate the smaller things in life and... Even if I still have many different ideas at the back of my head, I'll be damned if this one doesn't give a kickstart to the prompt.

The drama is about a uni student failing an exam and being depressed about it, so he decides to go to a small coffee shop to restart studying - but then, the coffee that gets served to him changes his entire outlook on life and he decides to study under the barrista to learn how to make coffee himself. The barrista doesn't seem to be interested at first, but keeps him under his wing eventually. Through the stories and people we meet in and around the café, we learn a lot of little lessons together with the characters - and if that isn't exactly what I needed at this point in time in my life, I don't even know.

The question is - how to set this up?

Idea 1: Since it's a Koushirou centric story, it'd be easy to just put him in a situation where he has to get his head clear. Whether he is still studying at uni level himself, I haven't decided yet, though making him go through a phase of sheer boredom, self isolation etc could be a great set-up. He's underwhelmed at uni, doesn't feel challenged and actually considers whether a change of field wouldn't be a good choice. Coffee is not exactly his beverage of choice (that's Oolong after all), but once he winds up at that particular coffee shop, the taste is what makes him light up - and in pure Izumi Koushirou fashion, he would get invested in doing research about it, trying to understand the craft, ingredients etc. Of course he's taking it on too rationally at first, even if the coffee shop owner (still blank, haven't decided who to pick here yet) is enchanted by his enthusiasm, so he hires him as a part timer at first, covering up for his only other employee, Yagami Taichi, who is also a university student, who was even more lost than Koushirou about where his life should lead him. (Alternatively, Taichi could be the one who inherited the coffee shop and decided to quit uni altogether, not having enough faith in himself to go for a career in politics, so even though he's still young, he does it full time - and he's GOOD at it, oh so good.) So they'd basically figure themselves out together, visited by regulars (Taichi's friends, Sora, who studies fashion design here too, and Yamato - who actually studies music, that's how they met; Koushirou's friends/acquaintances would be Mimi, who I'd love to turn into an experimental baker here and Jyou, who's craving a good dosis of caffein. Then Hikari and Takeru, the latter would use the place as writing space, the former is obviously a sweet tooth and would just love to lounge around... To be defined further.)

Idea 2: While the main character in the drama is a very studious, curious and awkward guy who fits more as Koushirou, putting Taichi in his shoes could be interesting too - so instead, Taichi would be the uni-dropout and ends up in that café/coffee shop, totally enchanted by that very young looking red-headed barrista who kinda looks out of place. (Kou inheriting the shop would be charming, since he IS a curious person who would be invested in the science behind coffee making as mentioned, but, again, maybe he is too rational about and needs someone who could complement his rationality with a bit of heart-felt courage...?) Taichi would start as a regular visitor, but would eventually ask to work full-time, which completely irrirates Koushirou. And so, the slow-burn begins...

He put emphasis on 'undesired' since it was just using the same word Koushiro had told him once when he got that job. That whole Digital World-related department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs exists now because of him so...

Yes, Taichi was very hungry. Or angry? (maybe both.)

He decided to not buy Hikari's teasing this time. He got too much stuff to do! And he will be interrogating Daisuke or Takeru later.

"If you have anything else to report about that giant thing-mon, I'm all ears."

"My goodness, big brother." Her airy laughter denotes the unseriousness in her exasperation.

"Do you regret becoming a politician?"

Such an obvious question isn't really one at all. She's saying 'you worked so hard to make this bed, now be quiet while you lie in it'.

"I hope you can make time to come see me soon sometime, big brother. Tailmon really, really misses you, she can't hold the phone like I can, you know?"

Not that Taichi was very nice over the phone nowadays.

"One time I asked her why she liked you most after me, instead of Miyako or someone else. She blinked like I asked something strange and she said 'he's our big brother'."

"...I know maybe she's the reason you haven't come to visit recently, but I think you'll feel better if you do."

Well, she finally got to talk to him... after Taichi ignoring her calls and also snapping at her due to stress. He will apologize her later, for sure. But he hoped she could understand that he wasn't in the right place previously.

He sighed, "I'm glad it ended well, I guess." he was... pouting? Taichi, you're 24 years old c'mon!

"They are going to keep asking me more and more questions, no matter what I tell them. They wanted to intervene very quickly, but Koushiro and I held them back until something happened."

"It felt like facing teach Fujiyama while trying to buy you guys time to do your digi-stuff and then come back before dinner."

"Except with the government, which is ten times worse than an Elementary teacher."

Hikari picks up her phone after a beat that following afternoon. "Ah, big brother! There you are."

"Oh, Daisuke left right away this morning for Koushiro's office to tell him everything." Can she make him jealous about Daisuke? Hmm...It would certainly lift her spirits if he did.

"We found the egg's partner and everything is ok now. You can tell your bosses that, Iori was going to write it up in legalese for you."
