A Rich Cultural Heritage in Tahiti
Tumblr media
Tahiti is a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage, offering a unique blend of traditional practices and vibrant modern expressions. The island’s culture is deeply rooted in its history, with customs and traditions that have been preserved and passed down through generations, creating a tapestry of experiences that are both fascinating and enlightening.
In this article, we will explore four key aspects of Tahiti’s cultural heritage: traditional Polynesian dance and music, art and tattooing, language and oral traditions, and traditional cuisine. Each of these elements provides a glimpse into the heart of Tahitian life, showcasing the island’s commitment to preserving its unique identity and sharing its beauty with the world. Tahiti holidays offer a perfect opportunity to experience this rich cultural tapestry firsthand.
Traditional Polynesian Dance and Music
One of the most vibrant aspects of Tahiti’s cultural heritage is its traditional Polynesian dance and music. Known as “Ori Tahiti,” the traditional dance of Tahiti is a captivating performance that tells stories of the island’s history, mythology, and daily life through expressive movements and rhythmic drumming. The dance is accompanied by live music played on traditional instruments such as the toere (wooden slit drum), pahu (bass drum), and ukulele. These performances are not only a form of entertainment but also a way to preserve and pass down the island’s cultural narratives from generation to generation.
Traditional Polynesian music plays a significant role in Tahitian culture. The melodies and rhythms are often tied to ceremonies, celebrations, and daily activities, creating a rich auditory tapestry that reflects the island’s heritage. Visitors can experience these cultural expressions at various festivals and events, such as the annual Heiva i Tahiti, a month-long celebration of dance, music, and sports that showcases the best of Tahitian traditions.
Art and Tattooing
Art is deeply ingrained in Tahitian culture, with traditional tattooing (known as “tatau”) being one of the most prominent forms. Tattooing has been a significant cultural practice in Tahiti for centuries, serving as a rite of passage, a mark of social status, and a way to tell personal stories. Each tattoo design is unique and holds specific meanings, often related to the individual’s heritage, achievements, and spiritual beliefs. The intricate patterns and symbols used in Tahitian tattoos are both beautiful and meaningful, reflecting the island’s rich history and cultural values.
Tahitian visual art also includes wood carving, weaving, and painting. Artisans create intricate carvings from local wood, depicting gods, ancestors, and important symbols. Weaving, using pandanus leaves and other natural materials, results in beautiful mats, baskets, and hats, which are both functional and decorative. The artistic expressions found in Tahiti’s visual art and tattooing highlight the island’s deep connection to its history, environment, and spiritual beliefs.
Language and Oral Traditions
The Tahitian language, “Reo Tahiti,” is an essential aspect of the island’s cultural heritage. As a Polynesian language, it shares similarities with other languages in the region but has its unique characteristics and dialects. The preservation and promotion of Reo Tahiti are vital to maintaining the island’s cultural identity. Efforts to teach the language in schools and encourage its use in daily life help keep this linguistic heritage alive.
Oral traditions play a crucial role in conveying Tahiti’s history and cultural knowledge. Stories, legends, and chants have been passed down through generations, preserving the island’s myths, genealogies, and historical events. These oral traditions are often shared during cultural events, festivals, and family gatherings, ensuring that the island’s rich heritage is remembered and celebrated. The combination of language and oral storytelling provides a deep understanding of Tahiti’s past and its cultural evolution.

Travel Guide to Tahiti & Her Islands
Tahiti and her Islands are renowned for their stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and romantic atmosphere. From lush mountains and turquoise lagoons to its luxurious resorts and opulent experiences, Tahiti offers a paradise getaway like no other. In this travel guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to plan your dream vacation to this enchanting destination.
Passport and Visa Requirements for Australians
For Australians planning to visit Tahiti, a valid passport is required with at least six months validity from the date of entry. Fortunately, Australian citizens do not need to obtain a visa for stays of up to 90 days. You are also not required to provide a middle name on any bookings at current. It is, however, essential to check regulations prior to booking as they may vary.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended when visiting Tahiti to cover unexpected emergencies, medical expenses, lost luggage, trip cancellations, and other unforeseeable challenges. It can be better to have insurance and not need it than the other way around!
Currency and General Cost
The local currency used in Tahiti is the French Pacific Franc (XPF), and at current AUD$1 is roughly converted to XPF73. While major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and shops, it’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller purchases and transactions. ATMs are available in urban areas, but they may be less common in remote regions.
As for general costs, a mid range meal for two can be expected to cost 10,000 to 20,000 XPF, while a local beer (Hinano, definitely worth a try!) is around XPF200 in a shop. Tahiti Tourisme has a great link to a cost of goods so you can budget in advance!
How to Get There and How Long to Stay
The main gateway to Tahiti is Fa’a’ā International Airport (PPT), located near the capital city of Papeete. Several airlines operate flights from Australia to Tahiti, via Auckland. Flight durations vary but generally range from around 8 to 10 hours.
Once you arrive in Tahiti, inter-island travel to other islands in French Polynesia, such as Bora Bora and Moorea, is possible via domestic flights or ferries.
When planning your itinerary, stay at least a week in Tahiti & Her Islands to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and culture. There are beautiful lagoons, walks, cultural experiences, food, and a lot of romance and rest to be experienced.

With Tahiti holiday packages from Spacifica Travel, you can seamlessly explore the iconic overwater bungalows of Bora Bora, the lush volcanic peaks of Moorea, and more. Each island presents a distinct allure, ensuring your Tahiti holidays are unforgettable and filled with adventure.Choosing the Right IslandsWhen planning to travel to Bora Bora or any of the enchanting islands in French Polynesia, it’s essential to consider what each island offers. Tahiti serves as the initial point of entry for most visitors and provides a mix of cultural experiences, bustling markets, and stunning landscapes. However, a Bora Bora holiday is synonymous with luxury and unparalleled natural beauty, offering iconic overwater bungalows and crystal-clear lagoons.Moorea captivates with its dramatic volcanic mountains and lush scenery, making it ideal for nature lovers and adventurers alike.Diving deeper into your island selection, islands like Rangiroa and Fakarava are celebrated for their exceptional diving spots, attracting divers from around the world with their vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life.Tahiti travel introduces you to the heart of French Polynesian culture.Venturing to less frequented islands like Huahine or Tikehau can provide a more secluded and authentic experience. Each island has its unique charm and specialties, from Rangiroa’s vast atoll providing a haven for marine exploration to Taha’a’s vanilla-scented air, offering a sensory delight. Careful consideration of each island’s distinct offerings will ensure a fulfilling and diverse island-hopping itinerary. The team at Spacifica Travel are experienced experts in this area and can help you pick which ones to include in your island hopping itinerary!TransportationNavigating between the islands of French Polynesia is an adventure in itself, with air travel serving as the primary mode for most visitors looking to explore beyond Tahiti. Air Tahiti offers comprehensive flight services connecting the archipelago’s islands, facilitating seamless travel to Bora Bora, Moorea, and beyond. Planning your flights well in advance is crucial, especially for those dreaming of a Bora Bora holiday, as flight availability can be limited and demand high during peak travel seasons. For those seeking a more scenic journey, ferries provide a picturesque alternative for short distances, such as between Tahiti and Moorea. This mode of transport not only offers a closer view of the Pacific’s azure waters but also allows for a more leisurely pace of travel, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the journey as much as the destination. Regardless of your choice, understanding the transportation options and booking early will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience as you hop from one island to another, making the most of your Tahiti trave l adventure.Accommodation OptionsAccommodation in French Polynesia caters to a wide range of preferences and budgets, from the opulent overwater bungalows of Bora Bora to more modest lodgings that offer a deeper connection to the local way of life. A Bora Bora holiday often conjures images of luxury accommodations with direct lagoon access, providing an unforgettable experience of waking up to the ocean’s tranquil beauty. However, these premium stays come with a corresponding price tag, making it essential to plan and book early, particularly for those seeking the pinnacle of island luxury. For travellers aiming to explore beyond the conventional, opting for guesthouses or pensions on islands like Moorea or even Tahiti itself can offer a more authentic and cost-effective experience.Read the full article to know more about Island Hopping in Tahiti: A Guide to Planning Your Journey

Nature & Environment – French Polynesia
Tumblr media
Welcome to the enchanting realm of French Polynesia, a paradise where azure waters meet lush landscapes. This guide explores four compelling reasons to visit, especially for unforgettable Bora Bora holidays: the exceptional marine life, iconic overwater bungalows, dramatic natural landscapes, and the rich Polynesian culture deeply connected to this breathtaking environment. Dive into a world of unparalleled beauty and cultural richness.
Exceptional Marine Life
French Polynesia’s marine environment is a treasure trove of biodiversity, making it a premier destination for underwater enthusiasts. The region, encompassing one of the world’s largest exclusive economic zones, boasts crystal-clear waters with visibility extending up to 30 meters, ideal for observing the vibrant marine life. The coral reefs here are among the most diverse and pristine globally, sheltering over 1,000 fish species. This underwater mosaic is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s a vital part of the ecological balance, supporting a myriad of marine organisms.
These waters are a sanctuary for large pelagic species, such as sharks, rays, and dolphins, offering a rare opportunity for close encounters with these majestic creatures. Seasonal migrations add to the spectacle, with species like humpback whales visiting the warm Polynesian waters to breed and calve. The rich marine biodiversity isn’t confined to the deep; even in the shallows, snorkelers can witness a bustling world of colourful reef fish, starfish, and clams. For those interested in marine conservation, many islands offer educational tours and conservation programs, providing insight into efforts to preserve this underwater paradise.
Iconic Overwater Bungalows
The overwater bungalow is a signature feature of French Polynesia, epitomising luxury and connection with the natural environment. These iconic structures, often thatched-roof and built with traditional materials, stand on stilts over the turquoise lagoon waters, offering guests direct access to the ocean. Waking up to the sound of gentle waves and being able to dive straight into the ocean from your private deck is an experience unmatched in most travel destinations.
The design of these bungalows harmoniously blends with the environment, often featuring glass floor panels, known as ‘Tahitian television,’ providing a window to the vibrant marine life below. This intimate connection with nature doesn’t compromise comfort, as the bungalows are equipped with modern luxuries and offer unparalleled privacy. The experience of staying in an overwater bungalow allows for a seamless blend of relaxation and immersion in the natural beauty of the islands, making it a must-do for any visitor to French Polynesia.
Dramatic Landscapes
Beyond its aquatic allure, French Polynesia is graced with dramatically diverse landscapes. Islands like Moorea and Tahiti are not just about idyllic beaches; they boast rugged, green mountains rising steeply from the ocean. These islands offer a network of trails, winding through lush rainforests and leading to breathtaking vistas. Hiking in these areas, one can experience the islands’ verdant interior, encounter unique flora and fauna, and gain a new perspective on the vast Pacific Ocean.
The volcanic origins of these islands contribute to their dramatic topography. Ancient calderas, steep valleys, and soaring peaks tell a geological story millions of years in the making. Exploring these landscapes, visitors can find hidden waterfalls, tranquil rivers, and serene gardens. The natural beauty of these islands extends beyond their shores, offering a rich tapestry of experiences for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Affordable Tahiti: Where to Stay, Eat and Play on a Budget
Tumblr media
Tahiti and Bora Bora — the names alone conjure up images of crystal-clear waters, overwater bungalows, and an idyllic paradise that seems almost too good to be true. Often regarded as the epitome of luxury and exclusivity, these dream destinations might appear out of reach for the budget-conscious traveller. However, the reality is far more inviting than you might think. With a little ingenuity and planning, affordable Tahiti holidays are not just a pipe dream but a feasible reality.
It’s a common misconception that enjoying the tropical paradise of Tahiti and Bora Bora requires breaking the bank. While it’s true that these locations are popular choices for high-end travellers, that doesn’t mean you can’t experience their breathtaking beauty on a budget. From discounted Tahiti holiday packages to wallet-friendly activities, there are ample opportunities for thrifty exploration.
Don’t let the allure of Bora Bora holidays remain a mere fantasy. Believe it or not, Bora Bora holiday packages tailored to budget travellers do exist. And they offer a slice of this heavenly realm without the hefty price tag. It’s all about knowing where to look, when to book, and how to make the most of what’s available to you.
The Islands of Tahiti — the beautiful sun-soaked islands we all dream about. Light, loose clothes, delightful French patisseries, adrenaline-filled natural experiences, heavenly massages, and world-class dining and accommodation have all made Tahiti a popular destination with a reputation for being expensive. But there are plenty of restaurants, hotels and activities in Tahiti that won’t cost you an arm and a leg nor compromise your experience.
In this blog, we’ll unravel the secrets to experiencing Tahiti and Bora Bora without emptying your savings account. We’ll guide you through affordable options for where to stay, eat, and play, ensuring your tropical dream doesn’t turn into a financial nightmare. So, sit back, relax, and let us show you how to make the most of your next budget-friendly adventure in paradise.
Where to Stay:
You will be able to save some money on accommodation by choosing to stay in one of Tahiti’s outer islands such as Maupiti, Huahine, Raiatea or Tahaa. These islands are still home to the stunning scenery that the Islands of Tahiti are famous for — opaque lagoon waters, white sand beaches and vibrant coral reefs — but because they not as famous as Bora Bora and Mo’orea, they come with a smaller price tag.
Another way to save money on accommodation is to skip the 5-star luxury resort and opt for a guest house style of accommodation instead. Guest houses are great because they are cheaper than the resorts, cleaner than a hostel and usually offer a much more authentic experience. Spacifica Travel work with several guest house accommodation providers in Tahiti and can help you book one to suit your budget and travel requirements.
Where to Eat:
Tahiti is full of 5-star restaurants and fine-dining experiences but for a much more authentic (and affordable) eating option, there are the roulottes. Roulottes (French for ‘caravans’), are food trucks and you’ll find several spots throughout Tahiti where they congregate, including the Papeete Roulottes, located by the Papeete port. The food trucks feature every style of food you could imagine, so whether you feel like traditional Tahitian food, something French or even just a pizza, burger or fries, there will be something there to suit your mood.
Another way to save money on food is to self-cater. If you’re staying somewhere like a guest house or apartment, you will likely have access to kitchen facilities. Head down to the local markets — an experience in itself — and pick up some fresh local produce so that you can prepare some of your own meals.

Tahiti for Two: Romantic Escapes in the Heart of French Polynesia
Tumblr media
There are few places in the world that are more suitable for a romantic escape than the islands of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Whether you are going on a honeymoon, an anniversary trip, or just want to enjoy a romantic vacation with your significant other, you will find plenty of love in the air during a Tahiti holiday.
At Spacifica Travel, we love helping couples plan and book a Tahiti holiday package that meets all their needs for a memorable romantic getaway. From stunning sunset cruises to resorts overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean, feel free to use these expert insights to put together the perfect itinerary.
Romantic Activities in French Polynesia
Whether you’re staying at Tahiti, Bora Bora, Mo’orea, or any of the outer islands, there are plenty of romantic activities to keep you and your partner occupied during your time in French Polynesia.
Bora Bora Sunset Cruise
One of the most stunning experiences in all of the South Pacific is a sunset cruise around the lagoons of Bora Bora. This group of islands is already a spectacular sight, but seeing it under the setting sun, on the water, while enjoying a meal and some drinks with your loved one is nothing short of magical. There are plenty of sunset cruises that operate around Bora Bora, so if you find yourself in this part of the world with your partner, you owe it to both of you to book yourself a spot.
Bora Bora Black Pearl Diving
If you are looking to create memories that will last a lifetime during your romantic escape in French Polynesia, then you absolutely must go black pearl diving with your partner in Bora Bora. By going on a guided diving tour off the shores of Bora Bora, you can collect an oyster and hope it contains a gorgeous black pearl that can be valued up to $2000.
Of course, if you don’t feel like selling your find, then it will make for a fantastic piece of memorabilia to always remember your romantic Bora Bora holiday by. Most black pearl farms also sell jewellery made from these little miracles of nature, so you could always bring home a piece of Tahiti for you and your significant other.
Picnic on the Beach
It’s a staple of romance, but there’s something extra special about enjoying a beach picnic on one of the islands of Tahiti. With their golden sands and crystal clear waters, it’s easy to get lost in the atmosphere of these breathtaking beaches. And when paired with some local cuisine, drinks, and, of course, your partner, you’re bound to create a memory that will stay with you long after your Bora Bora honeymoon or romantic getaway ends.

Which Tahiti Island is Best for You?
Tumblr media
Which Tahiti Island should you choose for your tropical Pacific getaway? It’s not an easy choice as the Society Islands in French Polynesia consist of 14 separate islands — each providing their own unique flavour and experiences for tourists. Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea — there are so many great destinations dotted throughout this small pocket of the Pacific, that it can be tricky deciding on the best one for you and your travel group.
If you are planning a Tahiti holiday, then let the experts at Spacifica Travel help you make a decision on the ideal islands for your needs. Breaking down each of the main islands and discovering which type of tourist they are best suited to will allow you to make a more informed choice on where you should spend most of your time while exploring the Islands of Tahiti.
Why You Should Stay in Papeete
No matter which island you end up at, you will first have to fly into Papeete — the islands’ capital city on Tahiti. However, even if you plan on exploring some of the neighbouring islands, there is still a lot to love about staying in this bustling, energetic city. Given its denser population, Papeete has some of the best shopping and dining destinations amongst the islands, a large market that is over 150 years-old, and some fascinating cultural spots and historic museums.
Papeete is ideal for family groups who need adventures and activities that cater to a range of age groups. There are plenty of great tours you can take into the island, but families can also spend a day entertaining themselves at the beaches and lagoons surrounding the city. If you are looking to book a Tahiti holiday package for your family, then make sure that Papeete features heavily in your planning.
Why You Should Stay in Bora Bora
Bora Bora is one of the most iconic islands in French Polynesia and features on many people’s bucket list for travel destinations. And it’s easy to see why! People from all ages love to book Bora Bora holiday packages for its breath-taking scenery, luxury accommodation options, and unforgettable experiences.
Surrounding a large clear lagoon, Bora Bora is for families and couples who want comfort, relaxation, and the experience of staying in a secluded tropical paradise. Whether you are seeking romance in a Bora Bora honeymoon package or a taste of luxury in one of the many stunning resorts dotted throughout the island, Bora Bora has earned its world renown for a very good reason. It’s simply too beautiful to resist and with a range of great activities available on the island and in the lagoon, there is an ample amount to keep your days occupied.
