Ok hear me out: Steve and the reader being childhood friends/crushes despite their different social circles in HS that they’re go into each other’s locker to borrow each other’s textbooks if they forgot their own and leave each other cute/silly notes to find

okay so i imagine this as a little scenario where maybe you live in the same neighborhood, person-next-door type deal. knowing each other since you were kids, being best friends for years (ofc with silly little crushes on each other).

but unfortunately you aren't ever in the same social circles - steve's popular and has a much more wealthy family, etc, which immediately means you don't hang out with the same people - but you don't hold it against him because you still meet up and hang up on the weekends, you still study together by the poolside at his house as the school year comes to a close and everything is bright with the coming of summer. you have other friends too, but you always come back to each other.

and although you don't hang out at school that often, you can't really go all day without interacting with each other, so steve starts not-so-sneakily saying that he forgot his math book at home, and can he pretty please borrow yours? he says it will only be a one time thing, but it turns into days and days of him forgetting some kind of book at home, and you can't always be late to your next class by unlocking your locker for him, so you just give him your combination and give him free roam of whatever he needs, whenever he needs it.

it's when you go to use your own books that you notice little notes - sometimes on sticky notes or written lightly in pencil on the margins of the pages he knows you'll be reading that day since you both have most of the same classes. 'i miss you - study sesh at mine tonight?', 'your hair looks really pretty today,' 'don't fall asleep today, mr. jones's lecture is SO boring,' among various other little things, like absent doodles of mustaches on some of the people in the images of your history book.

at first you're a little worried about vandalizing school property, but you can't deny the fact that the little notes and drawings make you smile in moments of intense school boredom, so you begin answering back on the next day's lessons, making up your own little things to say as well. 'i think cleopatra looks better with the mustache you gave her,' 'pay attention! i don't wanna have to reteach this to you later, harrington,' along with writing the steps to some of the math problems you know he has a particularly hard time answering.

the two of you get so used to sharing books that you decide next year you'll let steve's parents buy a single copy to share - meaning that you'll not only be able to write notes in his books, but you'll also be able to leave little gifts and silly things in his locker next school year.

you can't wait.

imagine your f/o asking you to paint their nails for them because you just 'do it better'. carefully positioning their hand in your grasp; their fingers twitching, threatening to curl over yours and hold onto your hand but in the end they think better of it because you just look so cute, so concentrated as you slick the lacquer over their nails. you take your time, making sure that the coat is as even as possible; wanting to make your beloved feel as pretty as you know they are. your touch is gentle and warm around their fingers as you layer on the paint, its glossy sheen slowly transitioning from clear to opaque due to your efforts.

they smile as they watch you work, enjoying the opportunity to shamelessly admire your features while your attention is diverted. if you notice, you don't show it, only glancing up occasionally to mumble out a soft "stop moving" under your breath as you hold your f/o's hand steady. they can't help it if they're a little restless; no matter how long you've been together, these moments of casual intimacy always make them feel just as nervous as the first time.

what color do they pick? does your darling request a different pastel shade on every nail, or prefer to stick to simple classics (red, black, neutrals)? either way, you know they'll insist upon returning the favor after you're done, making sure to match your nails with theirs . even though you saw right through their excuse from the beginning, you'll never turn down the chance to spend time with them. ;p

Taehyun let out a shaky breath, swallowing the lump in his throat before speaking. "I know it's been four years and maybe I kept you waiting but…"

You lift your head to look at him, your hand digging into your bag for something. You've been planning something for a while now and you hope that you didn't leave it at home. It'll be such a waste if ever.

"I'm undeniably in love with everything about you and I hope I make you happy as you make me. What I'm trying to say is that—"

Taehyun stopped, watching your hand as you finally found the thing you've been looking for. It was a small black velvet box. "Well, what were you trying to say?" You ask him, a grin on your face appeared.

"Are you proposing?"

You open the box revealing a gold ring. He pulls out a small red velvet box to open it, which reveals a thinner ring with small diamonds around it.

"Does this mean it's a yes for the both of us?" He let out a laugh, almost dropping the box on the table out of amusement. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"We'll look stupid if we back out when we clearly want to marry each other, huh?" You giggle and place the box down, taking the ring to put it on his ring finger later.

"You have a point."

WIP Intro Tag: Nicea

I am finally posting my intro for the WIP intro tag @anoelleart started over here! Since I first introduced Nicea over a year ago, it actually makes sense to do it for WIP intro tag.

Nicea takes its name from the Nicea, a starship from Antarac star system. To date, she's only gone on shipping trips within the neighboring systems that make up Argoh locality. But when she intercepts a message from her previous captain, Cady, who supposedly died warp racing ten years ago, the Nicea's crew prepares to take her across the galaxy to bring him home. And she's a sturdy vessel, but two hundred light years is a long way. Still, her crew has to make it—failure is not an option.

Genre: space opera

Setting: locality space, a galaxy full of people, some of whom are magical, and some of whom have enabled the current age of interstellar travel.

Core cast:

Declan Ruse [40, he/him, human]: Cady's husband & co-founder of Nicea Shipping. Currently the "shadow captain" of the Nicea, because of course he's the boss, but he hates talking to customers. He's the reason failure is not an option, because he can't imagine spending any more time apart from Cady.

Isabel Hendriss [36, she/her, human]: Rodney's sister & Spinder's best friend. Under Cady she was the load specialist of the Nicea, but she now serves as the registered captain, with her duties mostly being talking to people. She's been planning to leave the Nicea to start her own music career for a while.

Rodney Hendriss [33, he/him, human]: Isabel's brother & Declan's right-hand man. He was an afterthought on Cady's crew (read: cabin boy) but now he's the navigator, computer systems guy, and all around Knower and Organizer of Things. What he wants most is to be needed, especially by Declan.

Tristan Scherie [47, she/her, human]: Cady's friend & Bo's best friend. She's always been the pilot of the Nicea, even though Cady was also a pilot. She feels guilty for going on this trip, because it's dangerous and she runs the risk of missing her own wedding, but she needs to absolve herself of the guilt of indirectly causing Cady and Bo's "death".

Spinder Callawel [35, he/him, human]: Cady's uncle & Isabel's best friend. Years ago, he made a pact with Cady to become his ship engineer one day when Cady had a ship, and that's what he is still. But now he's bringing the ship back to Cady while he grapples with fears of death and also of telling Isabel he's in love with her.

Cady Thilta [40, he/him, human]: Declan's husband & Spinder's nephew. He was once the Nicea's captain because of his determination to become a space business owner, and now he's stranded because of his love of adrenaline. He sent the Nicea a message almost ten years ago and is still holding out hope it arrived.

Bo Eveldan [60, they/he, ferasca (dragon person)]: Tristan's best friend. They were never a member of the Nicea's crew, but they are a warp witch, and more than happy to take their favorite pilots warp racing. In retrospect, that might have been a bad idea, but at least he's here with Cady.

Honestly I can’t stop thinking about how Steve would proudly wear your hair tie around his wrist (especially if it’s like a bright colored scrunchy or something like that) obviously everyone likes to poke fun at him for wearing it every day but he likes having something of yours that is visible to others so whenever you ask to use it he gets worried that you won’t give it back (but ofc you do because nothing is sweeter than him wearing it) and when a girl starts flirting with him he flaunts his wrist in their face to show them is happily taken and not interested

YES!!! i just wrote a little steve thought about him and sharing things, because i really do think he's the type who likes to share EVERYTHING so you can always be reminded of each other <33

also, i weirdly (and maybe falsely) remember a time when this kinda thing was a trend to write about?? idk maybe i'm making that up; either way, i'm happy to write this for you!!

i think maybe it starts out as an accident. you're walking around the mall together and you complain about your scrunchie being uncomfortable around your own wrist, and you don't wanna put it in your hair right now, so steve does what any good boyfriend would and takes it and puts it around his own wrist. every single time he looks down or gets a glimpse of it as you're browsing through the various stores, it brings a wide smile to his face, and from then on it just becomes a thing the two of you do.

you give him on of them to keep and wear whenever he wants - because you also like how connected it makes you, to have a piece of each other even when you aren't around one another - and it's got some bright neon pattern on it that steve's never even seen before, which only makes him like it more since it's unmistakably yours.

the kids are, of course, the first ones to make their teasing little remarks, but they don't bother steve at all. he just does his typical annoyed-older-brother- slash-pseudo-mom eye roll and continues on. he thinks of them as a version of those cute matching couples bracelets (despite the fact that yours are typically in your hair rather than on your wrist) so nothing - and i mean NOTHING - is going to get him to take it off. probably ever. (seriously. you're lucky he gives it back to you so you can use it when you ask; he has a little grumpy pout on his face if you ever have it for 'too long' because he feels like he's missing a piece of you).

and, of course, there's the massive advantage of having an easy way to throw off anyone who tries anything on him. working at the mall didn't really come with much competition for you, but when it burns after the summer of '85 and he starts working at family video, the number of girls that try to shoot their shot is hard to get used to and a little annoying for a guy who's in head over heels like steve. so, when some girl comes up and starts leaning over the counter and asking about steve's favorite romance movies, his new go-to move is to take the hand with the scrunches on it and purposefully place it on the counter, wiggling it around and toying with it as he rests his chin in his palm. if tht isn't enough for them to take a hint, then he'll just get lost in thought while staring down at it, making sure to pull off his most lovestruck expression to really relay the fact that he isn't single or interested.

most will either awkwardly apologize and go back to the sections of movies or they'll grumble as they walk back out the front door. if it comes off a little bitchy, then oh well; it's always a sight that makes robin stifle giggles as she's filling out paperwork or restocking the shelves.

05. aftereffects

you're forced to ignore any feelings of insecurity when you pile into osamu's car with atsumu and rintarou. sakusa drives alone — "no one's throwing up inside my car" — so you're stuck in the back of osamu's one with both your brothers in the front. rintarou looks at you almost appreciatively, and your stomach twists, a lethal tangle of fire and butterflies.

"what?" you ask.

"nothing," he replies plainly. "you look nice today."

you almost choke on air. "what?"

"it's called a compliment, dumbass," he deadpans, before going back to scrolling on his phone. you find it difficult to stay upset after this little interaction, and even more so when he shifts to a more comfortable position. where it's as if his knee is purposely jutted out to brush against yours.

"are you sure this is a good idea?" kiyoomi's brows are furrowed as he stares at atsumu, who's drunkenly fiddling with the television remote. hearing him talk, he turns back to grin at the two of you.

"omiii," he whines. "let's have some fun for once, guys!"

and for whatever reason, kiyoomi doesn't argue after this.

the five of you are at atsumu and kiyoomi's apartment, where you're apparently going to watch a movie — courtesy of atsumu. that is, until he realises that he's lost his phone.

"you can't use mine," says rintarou from where he's situated beside you. you don't know why he's choosing to sit beside you when there's so much space elsewhere, but it's not like you can complain, either. but then kiyoomi nods in agreement, and osamu's one is dead, so only you are left.

"no way," you say, but a moment later you're syncing your phone up to the TV. when it finally connects, you breathe a sigh of relief and turn the movie on. it's short-lived, though, because it suddenly refuses to start. so you try again. and again. and again, and you hear rintarou groan. a second later, your screen — still projected on the television — freezes before going from landscape to portrait mode, and a bunch of notifications pop up on your screen. behind you, suna chokes.

you're not sure why or how everything finishes so fast, but one second you're trying to fix the TV, and the next you're on the way home.

"i have to go," says rintarou suddenly.
