my year in fic - 2022

I was tagged by @the-francakes (x), @schmem14 (x), @broomsticks (x), and @danpuff-ao3 (x) for a fic roundup/2022 review/stats something or other, so I'm combining them all here.

2022 was definitely a year of fests. Fests fests fests fests!!! I joined and modded so many fests that I'm taking a month long break in January. But I also had SO MUCH FUN. Fests are addictive and there's a reason for that.

Alright, here we go. Let's start with some stats.

Word Count: 151,378 (alas I did not make my goal of 200k but I'll take what I can get. That's still the length of a full length novel!)

Hits: 56,307

Number of Fics started and finished: 21 works (+ just as many double drabbles/microfics/minifics)

Number of WIPs started: um.... pass

Ships I wrote this year (not including background ships): um.... also pass. There's literally too many to list. I write so many ships it's hard to find a trend. But I guess I gotta answer.

Favorite ship(s): Yo this is such a hard question. Idk EVERYTHING. Drarry, rare pairs, and femslash. That's my answer.

Least favorite ship(s): Fenrir ships. I just can't get into them, but also, I dare you to convince me.

AO3 Fic Writers/Artists/Creators/Readers who have inspired me and my writing this year: ohmygod sososososo many. I'd be so annoying if I tagged them all. Maybe I'll just pick a few

@broomsticks and @consistentsquash for their rec lists! AMAZING STELLAR PHENOMENAL. Jackie also leaves the absolute sweetest comments and Squash is the best hype person you will ever find. I strive to be more like Jackie and Squash.

@thistlecatfics, @bluesundaycake, @danpuff-ao3 for their wonderful characterization. The depth and grittiness to their fics floors me every time.

@the-francakes for her humorous writing and @vdoshu for their creativity. Seriously, you never know what Doshu is going to do next. Every one of Francake's fics makes me laugh.

@crazybutgood, @sugareey-makes-stuff, @anaxandria-writes, @digthewriter for their art. Every time I see their art, I just want to write and write and write because it's so inspiring. I also want to leave them a million and some kudos. Why won't AO3 let me live my best life 😭?

@schmem14, @articcat621, @paulamcg for their lovely comments and dedication to keep reading what I put out. I'm STILL surprised that people like my writing enough to keep coming back 😅

5️⃣ Top 5 works I'm most proud of from 2022 (not necessarily my most popular)

Your Cigarette Smell [Sirius/Narcissa, E, 9.7k] — My fic for @hprarepairfest 2021! Which might be cheating a bit, but technically the fest ended in Jan of this year, and I love this fic so much that I really wanted to count it. But what could be better than Blackcest hate sex for the ages?

What is this, fucking Jeopardy? [Drarry, E, 20.5k] — Written for @hd-cluefest this year and an absolute blast! Cursed Draco and Curse-breaker Harry were a dream to write. This was my most popular fic from 2022!

Rosmerta's Special Brew [Andromeda/Rosmerta (but mostly gen), T, 6.0k] — My fic for @hpqueerfest that is a testament to queer joy and queer love. I love this fic with all my heart 💖

Call me baby (I'll be on the way) [Neville/Blaise, E, 6.3k] — Written for @hp-soulmates which I also modded 🙈. So much MISCOMMUNICATION and oblivious boys in love. Also filled with rare pairs galore!

Death and Undeath [Fred/George, E, 3.1k] — Written for @hpcestfest where I got to dip my toes into the Dead Dove scene. This is a fav of mine because I got to combine magic and science and wove it into George's desperation as he tries to bring Fred back to life.

4️⃣ Top 4 current WIPs that I'm most excited to release in 2023

Oh baby, here we go again. I'm SUPER excited for my fic for @dronarryfest 2023. I can't go into details because it's anon, but I am SO EXCITED.

I've started a longer Cissamione fic that I hope I get the chance to work on next year. Will it ever be published? We'll see.

Time travel Tomarry! I've read a lot of Tomarry but never really written it, so I'm trying it out for the first time.

Might finally continue my Drarry Squid Games-inspired fic. Maybe. Possibly.

3️⃣ Top 3 biggest improvements in my writing over the past year

Brevity: I think I'm finally getting the hang of cutting down scenes so I'm not info-dumping too much on the reader.

Confidence: I've definitely become more confident in my writing. I still wouldn't say I'm the best, but confident enough that I enjoy reading what I write.

Angst: I think I can write a fairly good angsty ficlet now. Fluff and smut, I might need to work on a bit more.

2️⃣ Top 2 resolutions (ways I wish to improve my writing/blog) for the new year

FINISH A LONGER WORK. I would love to actually finish something over 50k words and publish it chapter by chapter.

Cut back on fests (lol, yeah right) and make more room for myself. Be more mindful of my fandom limits and when to step back and take a break.

1️⃣ Number 1 favorite line I've written this year!

What if that was not the end?  Flip back to the beginning. Reink the quill. Rewrite the page.  Would that be enough to forget? Would that be enough to remember?

From White, the colour of flowers, my Drarry Hanahaki fic [M, 3.2k]. Lots of angst, multiple endings, and (un)requited love. I used this quote as a transition between sections, and it's still one of my favorites.

FOUR / height 5′2 1/2″ but I round up to 5′3″ because I just want to be tall

FIVE / hobbies Reading, watching documentaries, cooking/baking, interior design, harassing my cats, wood-burning, D&D, stressing over Critical Role (not that I’m caught up anymore), and writing things that I think about posting but never do.

SIX / favorite colors Yellow, burnt orange, black, and various shades of greens and blues.

SEVEN / favorite books  The Harry Potter series, the Percy Jackson series (yes that includes the Romans), and anything to do with mythology/Vikings/mythological creatures/magic.  I very rarely re-read books or remember titles after a few months so there are more that I genuinely enjoy but can’t remember the names for the life of me.

EIGHT / last song I listened to ...I am listening to music as I did and Savages just came on

NINE / last film I watched Technically it’s not a film, but it was Russell Howard: Recalibrate on Netflix because I love his comedy.

TEN / inspiration for muse Depends on what I’m working on, really. Sometimes dreams, sometimes things I randomly hear or come up with, sometimes colors or the things I’ve been reading/listening to (I always have mood music playing when I write that fits whatever I’m working on)

ELEVEN / dream job Either an English professor at a college in New York near my family (what I’m actually working towards,) or a little cafe owner.  It would have coffees and fresh pastries and maybe a few soups/sandwiches/pastas and game nights on Fridays/Saturdays and free wifi.  It would be open and cozy and a safe place for LGBTQIA+ people and have books and games along the walls for people while they are in the cafe. Oh, and I would be an author on the side no matter what my job was.

TWELVE / meaning behind your URL My preferred name is Rin (I got it when I was in middle school and watched a lot of anime with my best friend at the time) and I am a Hufflepuff.

THIRTEEN / top 3 ships Three??  Nah, you’re getting more than that.  Not sorry.  I’m a sucker for Wolfstar, Linny, and Drarry from Harry Potter.  For Marvel, it would have to be Clintasha, Stucky (!!!), Iron Hawk, Science Boyfriends, and SamSteve.  As for Critical role, I would die to protect Widdomok and BeauJester.

FOURTEEN / lipstick or chapstick Neither?  If I can avoid it.  If I HAVE to though one of those chapsticks that make my lips tingle.

FIFTEEN / currently reading So. Many. Fanfics.  Also the Eye of the World by Robert Jordan.

1. Ultimate OTP: I think I have to go with Drarry on this one, yep.

2. Ship you’ll always love: RARRY! Also Bill/Harry, Charlie/Harry, Percy/Harry (you read that right), one-of-the-twins/Harry...I just really love the Weasleys, okay?

3. Current obsession: Roarmac. Oh, Roarmac... Also Newt/Harry (time travel is involved in that one, also my apologies to Tina Goldstein)

4. Ship you never thought you’d like: Tomarry! I have a lot of stipulations that come into play for me to like a Tomarry fic (because, obviously, it can get quite dark), but man do I love this ship when I find the right story/art!

5. Ship you liked but don’t anymore: I haven't really been shipping long enough to drop pairs, but there have been some stories that really burned me on reading more. Tomarry is tricky for me to read if I don't trust the author or if I don't already know what's going to happen, so I don't read it often.

6. Ship you think should be canon: I think whisky got it right in that Drarry might not be as fun if it were canon, but damn do their canon characters go so well together. And also Linny! And Deamus! The popular fanon ships are popular for a reason.

7. Canon ship you hate: Hinny. I love Ginny but I do not like how JKR handled their epilogue relationship. I like a little Hinny after the war, to get it out of their systems, because they're both passionate and affectionate and I think that's what would happen with them at that point. But I don't like them immediately committing, making babies, building a future together forever. Neither of them had enough time to be free, have a childhood, explore, so to see them leaping right into careers and parenthood by their mid-twenties, it bums me out. This might also be my hang-up on the next-gen Potter kids, I've passed on a lot of Drarry fics that include James, Lily, and Albus. But I don't hate this ship. It's hard for me to hate a ship as long as the characters and story are well-written.

8. Ship you’ve been shipping for years: I think I started actively "shipping" just this year, when I found tumblr and found all the beautiful art and drabbles here. I've always read a lot of fanfiction, but it was mostly gen/preslash. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there's a whole world of fics out there beyond these new ships!

9. Ship everyone loves but you don’t care about: Anything Next Gen. I'm sorry, I'm just not interested in the next gen.

10. Favourite rarepair: Rarry and whatever Harry/Neville is called!

Jeni’s Best of 2k17

I was tagged by the lovely and wonderful @synonym-for-life to share my top 5 creations of 2017.  Everything ahead is Drarry.

He Had Time  This was literally the first fic I ever wrote.  It was written in January.  It’s tiny and is more of a character study to really get a feel for their “voices” before I attempted more complex fics. (also posted to ao3)

Exactly What I Want This one’s a series.  Ask For It was the first part that was intended to be a super-smutty drarry stand alone.  But due to high demand, I extended it with The Baltimore Stone.  It’s got smut. It’s got angst. It’s got a foul-mouthed, aromantic, badass Pansy Parkinson.  Memory magic, experimental magic, and a dash of Linny.  This fic is my heart and soul.

Stay With Me Based on ((this post)).  It’s smut, but both the fic and the post were pretty popular.  Draco gets turned on when Harry makes a sound.

Who Else But You (also known as *the soulmate au*) It started as a response to a drabble request.  The first chapter was the original response written in a journal-entry format from Draco’s POV.  Again, high demand led me to add an additional two chapters.

(Untitled) The untitled fic featuring violinist!draco was a response to an anonymous request.  I fell in love with the prompt immediately and even included links to a couple songs I used as inspiration.
