( gabbi garcia, twenty-three, cis woman, she/her, bisexual ) that’s MADELINE “MADDIE” QUIJADA. before they died, they were a/an FREE-LANCE TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER from TAGAYTAY, PHILIPPINES. how sad that they died at TWENTY-THREE because SLIPPED AT A CLIFF SIDE TRYING TO GET A PERFECT PHOTO, but at least they’re here now in the good place, right? i heard that they SCAMMED TOURISTS BY SELLING “AUTHENTIC” RELICS, but nah, that can’t be true. or else they wouldn’t belong here. the council has determined that their soulmate is A HOPELESS ROMANTIC WHO SECRETLY WRITES POEMS IN THE MARGINS OF THE BOOKS THEY READ. the two of them live in a beautiful house filled with SNOW GLOBES OF PLACES SHE WILL NEVER GET TO VISIT.
* : basics.
full name . madeline bernadette barcelo quijada. nicknames. maddie. date of birth . june 13, 2000. age at death. twenty-three. orientation . bisexual. ethnicity . filipino. nationality . filipino. hometown . tagaytay, philippines. occupation . free-lance travel photographer. faceclaim . gabbi garcia.
* : reason for being in the bad place.
maddie made a living off scamming tourists by selling “authentic” relics— trinkets she either bought in bulk or crafted herself with a good eye for aging details. she made them believe they were taking home pieces of history when, in reality, they were just overpriced souvenirs. she justified her actions as part of the experience: if they felt like they were buying something real, wasn't that enough?
* : reason for death.
died after slipping off a cliffside while trying to capture the perfect sunset shot. she was too focused on the angle to notice the ground beneath her giving way.
* : appearance.
height . 5'6" hair color . black. eye color . dark brown. tattoos . a compass on her ankle, a minimalist wave on her wrist. piercings . two lobe piercings, plus a helix piercing on her right ear. scars . a scar on her knee from a previous accident trying to get a good photo.
* : personality.
positive traits. adventurous, charismatic, resourceful, quick-witted, confident. negative traits. opportunistic, reckless, impulsive, manipulative, stubborn. mbti. estp. (the entrepreneur.) hobbies. traveling to remote locations (sometimes trespassing for the best views,) landscape photography, street photography, free diving and snorkeling, bartering (read: hustling), sketching out fake “ancient baybayin” symbols to make her scams more believable.
* : bio.
maddie quijada lived her life like she was running out of time. she was always chasing the next adventure, the next thrill, the next perfect shot. she grew up in tagaytay, where mist curled over the hills in the morning, and the view of taal volcano felt like something out of a postcard.
from the moment she could hold a camera, she was obsessed with capturing the world. not just the polished tourist spots, but the messy, in-between moments: the way the sun hit an empty street at dawn, the wrinkled hands of an old vendor counting change, the storm clouds rolling over an untouched beach. beauty was everywhere, and maddie was determined to find it all.
but passion alone didn’t pay the bills. freelance photography was unreliable, and maddie hated the idea of being tied down to a normal job. so she got creative. tourists wanted souvenirs; authentic, one-of-a-kind relics with stories behind them. so she gave them exactly that. a carved amulet from a “forgotten civilization.” a “centuries-old” piece of pottery she had aged herself. a rock from a sacred site that was actually from a construction lot down the street. she spun tales so convincingly that even she sometimes believed them.
she wasn’t a bad person. at least, that’s what she told herself. she wasn’t robbing anyone or hurting people. she was giving them something to believe in, a story to take home. if they left happy, what did it matter if it wasn’t real?
maddie was good at lying. to strangers, to friends, to herself. which makes it that much easier to blend in where she is now.
she never planned on settling down, never imagined a future where she wasn’t on the move. maybe that’s why she didn’t think twice before stepping too close to the cliff’s edge, camera in hand, angling for the perfect shot of the sunset.
one second, she was adjusting her focus. the next, the ground crumbled beneath her.
she didn’t even have time to scream.
and just like that, her story ended before she ever got to see the world.
when she wakes up in what’s supposed to be paradise, it all seems too perfect. a stunning home, a carefully chosen soulmate who looks at her like she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to them. it should be a dream.
but then there are the snow globes.
lining every shelf, sitting on every table. she hated them. the stupid glitter and pretty poison swirling inside the fragile glass orbs. tiny, frozen places she should have visited, but never will. a mockery of the life she lost. they asked maddie how her visits to these places were, and she had to lie between her teeth.
doesn't matter. she'll work on being happy. that's what the good place is for, right?

Tagaytay: Where the Wind Blows, Bulalo Flows
In December 2022, I had the chance to visit Tagaytay with my elementary friends and our parents, and it turned out to be a trip I will never forget. It was a day filled with fun, delicious food, and breathtaking views, and the whole experience felt like a perfect way to relax and reconnect with old friends. Tagaytay, with its cool climate and stunning landscapes, was the ideal place for a memorable trip, and I couldn’t have asked for a better destination to spend the day with my friends, whom I hadn’t seen in a while.
We began our trip by stopping for breakfast, and we decided to try bulalo, a classic Filipino dish made of beef shank cooked in a savory broth with vegetables. It was the perfect dish to start our day, especially since the weather was a bit chilly when we arrived in Tagaytay. As we sipped the hot broth and dug into the tender beef, we were surrounded by the beautiful scenery that made Tagaytay so famous. The cool, fresh air, combined with the peaceful atmosphere, made the meal even more enjoyable, and we were all excited to explore the area further.
After breakfast, we headed to Sky Ranch, one of the most popular tourist spots in Tagaytay. The amusement park was filled with fun rides, but the highlight for me was definitely the Sky Eye Ferris wheel. As we slowly made our way up, we were treated to an amazing view of the surrounding area, including Taal Volcano, which looked even more beautiful from up high. The wind was incredibly strong at the top, which made the whole experience feel even more thrilling and refreshing. It was the kind of wind that made us laugh and appreciate the moment, and we all took plenty of pictures to remember the stunning view.
Later in the day, we decided to hike up a nearby mountain, which turned out to be a bit more challenging than we had expected, but it was definitely worth it when we reached the top. The view from the summit was nothing short of spectacular, and we could see Tagaytay’s lush green landscape stretching for miles. As we took in the beauty of the place, I couldn’t help but think about the history of Tagaytay, from its role in the country’s past to how it has become a popular spot for tourists looking for a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It felt special to be there, standing in such a historically rich location, and it made the experience even more meaningful.
Throughout the day, we visited several other spots that offered even more amazing views, each one giving us a different perspective of the beauty of Tagaytay. We also took the opportunity to try out various local foods, from fresh fruits to street food snacks, which were all so delicious. The food added another layer of enjoyment to the trip, and it seemed like we were constantly munching on something new and tasty at every stop.
One of the most unforgettable parts of the trip was the wind. It was incredibly windy in Tagaytay, and the cool breeze made the whole day feel refreshing and fun. The wind made everything feel more alive, and we couldn’t stop laughing as it hit us while we walked around, took pictures, and enjoyed the scenery. It was one of those things that made the trip feel even more special and unique.
In the end, our trip to Tagaytay was more than just about sightseeing or trying delicious food—it was about reconnecting with old friends and creating new memories together. The combination of beautiful views, tasty food, and the laughter we shared throughout the day made it an experience I will always treasure. Tagaytay, with its cool breeze, stunning landscapes, and warm atmosphere, is definitely a place I would love to visit again in the future.

📍Baywalk Bañadero 🌋
Baywalk Bañadero, located in barangay Bañadero, along with barangay Wawa and Dragon View Deck in barangay Boot, was one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tanauan, Batangas province. People from the city and its neighboring cities take the time to visit the location, which is famed for its breath-taking beauty of Taal Lake and the soothing environment of the place.
My family and I opted to go jogging here since the route is so gorgeous, and with the view of Taal volcano, it's really inspiring to run in such a beautiful spot. It's also calming, and there are numerous restaurants and coffee shops around. If you feel hungry. Take a picture and everyone will assume you're on Tagaytay, but you're actually in Tanauan, Batangas.
If you wish to come here for the clean air, peace, and proximity to nature, it is highly recommended. Come here since we only have one life to live and let's always take vacations to unwind and escape from the hectic aspects of life.

Visiting the Philippines
Before leaving Asia I visited the Philippines with my dad, as he is friends with a couple who live there and invited us to visit them.
The Philippines consists of more than 7,600 islands. We were on the largest and most populous island, Luzon, which is where Manila is located. My dad’s friends whom we stayed with reside outside of Tagaytay, a city that is technically less than two hours south of Metro Manila, but with Philippine traffic it takes longer than that.
I thought Vietnam had crazy traffic, but getting around there was much easier than in the Philippines. My dad’s friends have a hired driver because the roads are honestly insane to navigate there. In addition to cars and motorbikes, the popular modes of transportation that locals use in the Philippines are Jeepneys and tricycles. Jeepneys are essentially the public buses that people can easily hop on and off, and they’re often decorated to be flashy and colorful. They can get quite very crowded, though; we saw several that had people seated on the roof and hanging out of the back. Tricycles are basically motorcycles that have been outfitted with covered sidecars to transport more passengers. These are also often colorful and overflowing with people. While it is cool to see these forms of transportation that are unique to the Philippines, they contributed a lot to the difficult traffic.
Tumblr media
Despite spending many hours in the car, our hosts showed us around to some great sites. Tagaytay overlooks Taal Volcano, an active volcano that erupted as recently as 2020. One day we took a boat out on Taal Lake to see the Volcano Island. Due to the volcanic activity this island is supposed to be closed to inhabitants, but people still live there to farm and fish and preserve their homes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also went to a beach further south to swim. The water was very clear and calm, making for a pleasant swim. The beach we were at also had boats and water toys available, so we road a banana boat out to sea that allowed us to see more of the coastline and feel some sense of adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For our last day we visited Metro Manila to see some historic sites. We went to Fort Santiago, which provides a lot of insight into colonial history. There is also a museum on site there about José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines who was executed in 1896 for his role in inspiring the revolution against the Spanish rule. We also visited several churches. The majority of Filipinos are Catholic so there are many beautiful churches around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course I cannot forget to cover the food. Filipino food is AMAZING and I am so sad that it is not easy to find where I live in the US. I left the Philippines well-fed with a stomach full of Halo-halo, Adobo, Chicharon, Lanzones, Mangoes, Pomelo, Sinigang, Lumpia, Kare-kare, Pancit, Milkfish, Bibingka, and Buko Pie. This is not Filipino food, but we also got KBBQ as a treat and it was only about $10 USD. One of the things I will miss most about SE Asia is the availability of incredible food.
Tumblr media
Overall I really enjoyed the Philippines and was glad we got to stay with people who live there to see some things that the average tourist would not. Besides the sites and food that I wrote about I also loved how warm and welcoming Filipinos were, and I would love to go back some day. Our hosts recommended Palawan or Boracay for the most beautiful spots so those are now on my bucket list.

Cuenca, Batangas
Major Jumpoff: Mountaineer’s Store, Brgy. 7 “Siete”, Cuenca Exit point (traverse): Brgy 5 (to Grotto), Cuenca LLA: 13°55 N; 121°2 E; 706 MASL (Rockies) / 930 MASL (summit) Days required / Hours to Rockies / summit : 1 day / 1-2 hr / 2-4 hr
Specs: Minor, Difficulty 3/9 (Rockies); 4/9 (Traverse) Trail class 1-3. Features: Scenic views of Taal Lake, rock formations, forests
One of the top hiking spots in the Philippines is Mount Maculot. It provides sweeping views of Batangas's neighboring towns and the renowned Taal Lake. The top of Mount Maculot is 930 meters (3051 ft) above sea level. Mt. Maculot Rockies, on the other hand, is 706 meters or 2316 feet higher than sea level. Despite being less than 1000 meters above sea level, Mt. Maculot may be viewed from Puerto Galera and several locations in the province of Northern Mindoro.
Mt. Maculot is located at the heart of Batangas which is in the municipality of Cuenca, Batangas. This mountain attracts a lot of hikers and mountaineers on weekends and during the summer because of its proximity to Metro Manila. Today, Mt. Maculot is a significant tourist site, a dormant stratovolcano that is ideal for a day hiking excursion for hikers of all skill levels.
Mt. Maculot has a rock formation on top that overlooks the entire Taal Lake, including the Taal volcano, as well as the plains of Batangas, is situated next to Taal Lake. From a distance, Mt. Makiling and the Tagaytay Highlands can be seen on opposite sides. You can view Mt. Halcon in Mindoro if you continue south along Batangas Bay and pass Maricaban Island. It can take less than an hour for expert climbers to reach the Rockies, but it can also take up to two or three hours at a more leisurely pace. Due to the trail's popularity, some enterprising residents would offer drinks at the rest spots along the relatively steep trail, including buko juice.

“See the beauty of Tagaytay City”
I kept returning to there since it was one of my favorite spots in the Philippines. Our ancestral house is in the city of Tagaytay. Since I can easily travel there whenever I want and it is close to Laguna, I think of Tagaytay City as a neighborhood of Laguna.
I adore the endless and breathtaking views of nature in this city. The serenity I always yearn for and can never forget. The breeze that touches my skin moves quickly and smoothly. While the mountains and trees were so stunning. I'm continuously in awe of this place.
It is my safe place; if I need to clear my head and unwind physically, emotionally, even mentally, I always go there. Additionally, it brings me a good sensation that motivates me to work hard. I've traveled to many various cities, nations, and tourist destinations, but Tagaytay City will always hold a special place in my heart.

Rent a Car with Driver in the Philippines to Explore Tourist Destinations
The Philippines is a paradise of breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. From the bustling streets of Manila to the serene islands of Palawan and the stunning landscapes of Bohol, there’s so much to explore. While public transport is available, it can be unpredictable and time-consuming. Renting a car with a driver is the best way to enjoy a stress-free journey, allowing you to focus on the experience rather than navigating unfamiliar roads.
Why Rent a Car with a Driver?
1. Convenience and Comfort
Traveling in a private car with a driver eliminates the hassle of waiting for buses or hailing taxis. You can set your own schedule, stop wherever you like, and travel in comfort, especially if you're visiting multiple locations in a day.
2. Local Knowledge and Expertise
A driver who knows the area well can provide valuable insights about local attractions, the best places to eat, and hidden gems that you might not find in guidebooks. They can also navigate efficiently, avoiding heavy traffic and taking the best routes.
3. Safety and Security
Driving in an unfamiliar country can be challenging due to different traffic rules and road conditions. A professional driver ensures a safe and smooth journey, allowing you to relax and enjoy the trip without the stress of driving.
4. Cost-Effective and Time-Saving
While self-driving may seem like a budget-friendly option, renting a car with a driver can be more economical when considering fuel, toll fees, and parking. Plus, you save time by avoiding wrong turns or getting stuck in heavy traffic.
Top Tourist Destinations to Visit
1. Manila and Surrounding Areas
The capital city offers historical sites like Intramuros, Rizal Park, and the National Museum. For a quick escape, take a drive to Tagaytay to enjoy the scenic view of Taal Volcano or visit the heritage town of Taal in Batangas.
2. Baguio – The Summer Capital
Baguio is a perfect getaway for those who want to escape the heat. Explore Burnham Park, Mines View Park, and the famous Strawberry Farms in La Trinidad. Having a driver makes navigating the winding mountain roads much easier.
3. Banaue and Sagada
For an off-the-beaten-path adventure, visit the breathtaking Banaue Rice Terraces and explore Sagada’s hanging coffins and caves. The long drive is best enjoyed with a knowledgeable driver who can handle the mountainous terrain.
4. Cebu and Bohol
Renting a car with a driver in Cebu lets you explore the famous Magellan’s Cross, Tumalog Falls, and Kawasan Falls with ease. In Bohol, see the Chocolate Hills, visit the Tarsier Sanctuary, and relax on Panglao Island.
5. Palawan – El Nido and Puerto Princesa
Palawan is a tropical paradise, and while some areas require boat travel, renting a car in Puerto Princesa lets you visit the Underground River, Honda Bay, and other scenic spots before heading to El Nido.

NARRATIVE ESSAY-TRAVELOGUE
TOPIC
NARRATIVE ESSAY-TRAVELOGUE
PREPARED BY
HAZEL JOY C. CIRIACO
II. Content
Travelogue
ELEMENTS AND IDEAS IN WRITING AND CRITIQUING A TRAVELOGUE              “A travelogue is a person’s account of a journey to another country or place. It can either be a written report with many factual details or a narrative story about impressions and experiences supported by images.                                                                                                          Travelogue is a person’s account of a journey to another country or place, sharing his/her significant experiences with that particular place he/she has been. A travelogue is always accompanied with pictures of the places the writer has been, to make the story more captivating and truthful since it is his first-hand experience which makes the readers interested to read. Personal narratives and travelogue are writing forms in which the content is all about the personal experiences of the writer.” (Excerpt from the DepEd SHS Module)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            “Travelogue is a story of the experiences encountered by someone while touring a place for pleasure. It may include impressions, experiences, insights, and commentary that support the theme of the article. Aiming to inform and entertain, a travelogue transports readers to the place one has visited and convinces them to visit it.” (Excerpt from Creative Nonfiction, Sibs Publishing)                                                                                                               Travelogue still has the elements of a story and it uses narration in chronological style to inspire and encourage readers to visit a travel destination. In travel writing, the character is the Writer and the point of view is in first person. You may also include the people whom you travel with. You may use the past tense in telling your experiences. You can maximize the setting by describing vividly the geographical location by using imagery or sensory words. You can describe the place starting from near to far, left to right, top to bottom, or as you move around the area. The plot is your itinerary. Tell in chronological order how you started the trip, how the trip proceeds, your encounters, amazing experiences, and reflections that occur along the way. Provide some tips and advices for readers who may be interested to visit the place also. Encourage them to try some adventures. You may leave some safety travel tips or precautions. You may end by giving your insights, unforgettable moments, and plan for revisit. You may share some ideas for next travel destination or provide some constructive feedback about the resort/hotel/restaurant that you have visited.                                                                                                                               Some good travel destinations in the Philippines to write about are: Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, Tagaytay, Baguio, Palawan, Batangas, Iloilo, and Siargao. You may also write about popular places in other countries, however state clearly whether you really have encountered those tourist spots or you are writing a creative research about that place.                                              Some other content to write in a travelogue is your experience about the resort’s customer service, the travel agency’s assistance throughout the trip, and the expenses that comes along visiting such place. You may provide some guidance to readers in regards to commuting to such place or availing of a group tour package (Crizaldo-Ciriaco, 2024).

My Flop Era: Is Lowkey Serving | Act 1, Entry #22
18 August 2022
It's still sunny but the temperature has noticably dropped. Afternoons feel like Tagaytay (a highland city in the PH). It's windy and it rains A LOT.     We went to the newly opened restaurant that Capt cakKe's friend owns called Himori. I let Capt cakKe order for me and he got me meatballs and chicken fillet steak with salad, tomato soup, and ginger ale. He knows my taste buds so well. I enjoyed the food.     We were supposed to go sightseeing at the most touristy beach in this area called Palm Beach after eating but the place was SOOOO crowded. We went to a different beach instead (also a tourist spot), and it's even MORE crowded. Lol. So we decided to set aside our beach-ing plans for now.     We instead went back to the kakigori place before, up the mountain near Shiraito Waterfalls. Capt cakKe has been craving kakigori for days now. I tried mango flavor this time. It's still so good but I think I prefer the matcha one better.     I realize we haven't tried riding any public transpo yet, except a taxi. We were always in Capt cakKe's car. Tia Fei already told us that she will show us how to ride the bus and the train but we are still waiting for that day to come. Lol. Kootchie also promised to give me her bike but problem is, the bike is locked in their condo's storage room where its key is kept by their landlord.. Who has been out of town!

Tagaytay
When I was a kid, I rode my first horse, got my favorite puppet, ate coconut pie, and saw a volcano for the first time in Tagaytay. It was a golden time when me and my brother got a long and all my cousins didn't have kids or moved away.
Tumblr media
**Buko/Coconut Pie is all out since there's a shortage of coconuts. Sounds like a deforestation problem to me (my theory) for those fancy mansions lol.
I've been wanting to go again hopefully to get that puppet (my dog later chewed up) and some jackfruit (literally the world's greatest fruit that tastes like Juicy Fruit gum).
It was now only an hour away because they improved the roads. That's not all the improved. There are literal mansions lined up there kind of like Beverly Hills, Boutique Hotels, and restaurants that capitalize the view. Bathrooms everywhere and ready souvenirs. So much has changed! I remember a 4 hour drive and waking up early to avoid traffic. I trained my bladder as a kid just to not inconvenience the adults.
Tumblr media
All that has changed and it makes me wonder if the city has invested in it or the new landowners lined up for the now Kitschy tourist spots?
Anyway mission jackfruit... I learned the best and cheapest fruit is when you buy from a stand by itself. Fruit stands lined up together drive the price up because they collectively a tourist trap. Singular fruit stands grow the fruit and can charge you lower. All the fruits were so ripe and beautiful. The juice was dripping out of the pineapple and we would just eat the little ripe bananas to see if we wanted to buy them.
Tumblr media
Next we go to this beautiful restaurant Leslie's to see the Taal Volcano. My Lola was very concerned about the village that lived at the bottom of the mountain close to the sea. Even in her old age, she's so considerate (she asked us about 4 times). Being there with my mom and Lola was so wonderful because time is not something we ever get back, so best to live with the living while we can.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we go to Picnic Grove. I feel it's familiarity. This is where the puppet came from! I didn't find the puppet but I did find kids like myself, so happy to get a toy there. It made me realize that the person who made that puppet will never know how much I loved something they crafted. I learned in this moment that art can never be measured by its maker and that is the natural order of the joy it induces to those that receive art.
Tumblr media
We head home and pass by the ol' Dictator's run down house. It's decadence makes me so angry. But I am glad it is now home to a few houseless people.
We get home and chop up the jackfruit to give our relatives and neighbors. My mom didn't like the way I peel it and said I wouldn't pass her quality control. I say, you have your methods and I have mine. But overall, it's quality time together and that's sweeter than the fruit itself.
