Gotham Protects Her Own

“Gotham protects her own.” Bruce had whispered to him once, in a, at the time, not so rare moment of affection, cradling dick to his chest as they looked over his city. Their city. Batman and Robin. Dick had believed him, of course, but he hadn’t really felt it. Not until he had stood at the bats side for the second year in a row, and his cape had fluttered. Dicks cape had never fluttered while he was standing. Running across the rooftops? Sure. Jumping over a chimney? Most definitely. But just standing still, no movement? It had never happened. Bruce’s did, from the very beginning Bruce’s cape had flown behind him, flapping with grace in the wind that was not there. But dicks hadn’t. But now… Bruce smiled down at him, pride lining every line in his face, before he took off across the roof, a challenge and a test at the same time. Dick chased after him, and for the first time since he had become Robin, he flew. His feet barely touched down, cushioned by the roofs, by shadows, and he laughed, wild and bright and free, and Bruce joined him, laugh deep and rich and full. Dick belonged to Gotham now, the city had laid her claim on him, and as Batman and Robin flew across the city, Dick could hear a new laugh join them, light and happy and feminine, delighted by their delight, their acceptance. Gotham protects her own, and Dick Grayson-Wayne, the first Robin, had earned that right, that protection, with his leaps and jokes and belief in Batman, in a belief in the city, in the belief that it could be better. 

Gotham protects her own. Catherine Todd had murmured to him once, late one night, a bruise blossoming on her cheek, eyes heavy from drugs. She was close to death, Jason could feel it practically wafting off her, and he didn't think much of her last words, a hazy drugged hallucination, slurred speech. But then she had passed and Jason had left, choosing the street over his father and then he had understood. People came looking for him, naturally, even his father ventured out, but shadows seemed to envelop him, the streets opened to his footfalls, and he always found a safe place to sleep, never waking with his things stolen or suddenly kidnapped. Jason could feel the city, his very lifeblood, could hear her music in her traffic, felt her song in the earthquakes. Gotham cradled him, sheltered him, and when the time came, pushed him to a left unattended Batmobile, tempting him to steal the tires. For the first time, Jason doubted his city, hated her for sending him into a trap. But then he became Robin, and Gotham squealed in delight, and Jason watched in awe as Bruce flew, as Gotham made his cloak billow, as she nurtured her prodigal son. Batman had gotten injured, once, badly enough that he had struggled with his grapple line, and it had snapped. Jason had screamed, lunging for him, but it was too late. Before he could cry over the dead body of his mentor, he found Bruce at the bottom of the building, not much worse for wear at all. Gotham had cradled him, shadows leaping to cushion his fall. Jason had laughed with glee, rushing Bruce home as quickly as possible, and something had brushed his cheek, a faint kiss against his forehead. Gotham protects her own and Jason Todd-Wayne, the second Robin, had been born into that right, that protection, and felt her city pound through his body like blood, feeding his soul. 

Gotham protects her own. Tim had seen the slogan on a Wayne Enterprise billboard once, when he had been seven, an ad campaign promoting insurance and helpful housing. It had become a sort of mantra for him, something he whispered under his breath every time his father made a snide comment about Tim lacking proper talent or social skills, after every call his parents declined, after every fight that had him biting his lip to stop the tears and debate running away. Gotham protects her own. Became his lifeline, his mantra, a promise of a better life. It wasn't anything he ever believed, until he finally worked up the courage to approach Bruce Wayne about the secret. Tim slipped on the Robin uniform for the first time… And something inside him settled. A woman's voice in the back of Tim’s head squealed. But as he raced over the rooftops, finally at Batman's side as he always dreamed to be instead of a few feet behind, snapping pictures, his cape dancing with the wind, his feet hardly touching down, that mantra, that false belief of hope, of a better life, became truth. Gotham protects her own, and Tim Drake-Wayne, the third Robin, had believed in that truth his whole life, wishing with every fiber of his being that she would protect him, and she finally had. 

Gotham protects her own. David Cain had warned her once, telling her great stories of the city with air of midnight black, of water a putrid green, and of a people a hardy and tough. It hadn't been a compliment, just another obstacle she would need to overcome to fulfill her future missions. She had believed him, of course, but… she had never truly known what it meant. Not until she had stumbled into the city, hurt, bleeding, afraid, and she had felt that… otherworldly power. Reaching for her. Its tendrils soft and kind, like a mother, shadows stretching across her, shielding her, as the League prowled the streets. It wasn't until she saw him. The Bat. And his little Bird, brutal efficiency and yet mercy in every action, wasn't until she saw how Gotham cradled them, lifted them, helped them to fly. Gotham had been more accepting to her than she had thought. Maybe because she hadn't hurt her children. Maybe because she knew her pain. Maybe because Cass had been so afraid. But whatever the reason, when Cassandra Cain-Wayne took to the streets, a proud, blazing Bat on her chest, her cape billowing behind her, Gotham sang. 

“Gotham protects her own!” Arthur Brown had screamed once. It had been in a fit of rage, followed by the sounds of windows crashing and tables smashing against the wall. He had been angry, livid even, the sound of his footsteps heavy and hard on the floor as he stormed around, pissed that Batman was unreachable for him, untouchable, protected by the city he claimed to do the same to. Steph knew the truth in the words, had been protected by them her whole life, finding a window open right when her father got home, the closet door unlocked miraculously after her father had locked her up, alleyways opening for her to escape through when bigger kids picked on her, or the cops chased her. And it happened now, as Arthur Brown came storming for her, rage and malice and every evil intention written across his features. Steph could feel that tug, that indescribable feeling of home, and she took a step back, melting into the shadows as she fled, fled her home, fled her father, fled his wrath and everything wrong with the world. She settled on the roof, the way she always did when he got like this, and waited, as she always did. For it to end. For him to stop. It was that night that she saw him for the first time. Steph had heard of him, of course, the Batman was infamous throughout Gotham by now, but she had never seen him in person. Never watched his work. It was at Bethany’s house. Bethany’s father, Vincent, was screaming again. The way Arthur was. But Gotham, Gotham didn't protect Bethany the way she did Steph. Or maybe Bethany just didn't listen. But Batman.. Batman listened. Batman protected. Steph watched, wide eyed, as he jumped through the window, as he grabbed Vincent by the throat and slammed him against the wall, snarling in his face. Steph watched, hands clutching her teddy, wondering whether she would rather risk her father than this demon. But he stopped. Paused. Threw Vincent to the ground in disgust, unconscious, and turned to Bethany. Beth had stopped moving, the way she always did when Vincent got the way he did, dissociating so she wouldn't feel his hands on her. Steph didn't think it worked, but it was something. Batman bent down, gentle, slowly, a few feet away, extending a hand to Beth. Steph couldn't hear what he said, couldn't see his face, but Beth blinked at him. She blinked, and she walked closer, slowly. And Batman… Batman held her, held her until she was crying, held her through her tears and wiped her eyes and rubbed her back, held her until she was asleep without nightmares, and carried her to bed, tucking her in gently. Steph didn't know how long she sat there, watching as he cared for this little girl, forgoing the Bat Symbol in the sky, and his anger, for her. Gotham protects her own, Steph swore as she watched him drop from the window the same night, flitting away on shadows only she could see. Gotham protects her own, and she would protect Gotham. She would mold herself after the Bat, and help.

The day had been nothing short of amazing. Stephanie was the most beautiful bride, you’d ever seen in real life, and the ceremony had left no eye dry. Mitch had looked so proud, standing there, seeing the love of his life walking towards him; about to say yes to be his forever. 

It was simply wonderful.

And you’d had a great time as well. Seeing one of your best girlfriends marrying the love of her life; her best friend, made you feel warm and deeply happy for her. And of course, you’d make it your life’s mission to hunt down Mitch if he’d ever break her heart; but in this very moment of ‘I do’s’ and vows, you had no doubt they were made for each other. 

The only little tinge you felt in your chest, was caused by the gazing honey brown eyes, belonging to none other than your gorgeous of a ginger ex-boyfriend/former lover: Frederik Andersen. 

You and Freddie had history – not a long one, but history, nonetheless.

Freddie had very casually walked straight into your heart back in 2019, when he was the starting goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the moment Stephanie had introduced you to the team and their significant others. You’d come to know Stephanie through another girlfriend of yours, and your quickly growing friendship had made her take you in and made you a part of the inner circle of the hockey team. 

Something you’d never even dreamt of in your life but was so grateful for had happened. 

And you enjoyed every second of it. Every game, every team event, and not to mention, every time Freddie had looked at you. If someone asked you, if you believed in love at first sight, this was probably the closest you’d come to experience it. Because it must have been love - And Freddie had not held back in expressing his feelings for you, and bluntly asked you out.

So that was your history: one year of pure joy and happiness; amazing sex, laughter, comfort post losses, and genuine heart-warming feelings. 

Unfortunately, your fairy-tale had been cut short, when Freddie was to move to the Hurricanes in North Carolina, and you were unable to move with him. Not only because you’d only been going out for a year, but also because you’d just started your new job after an important promotion, you’d worked so hard for. 

And it’s not that you didn’t want to move with Freddie, but he simply couldn’t live with himself if he knew that it’d been his fault that you’d have to give up on your career and start all over – just so he could have his. No, it wasn’t fair, and eventually you’d agreed. 

The first couple of months went well though; you tried to talk every day and keep each other updated of your whereabouts, but then it grew too hard for the both of you. The distance alone just made you fall apart – and it had been Freddie who’d eventually been the one to rip off the bandage. 

Although it’d hurt, you knew it was for the best. 

So here you both were, at the party of a wedding between your very close friends. Both standing in a room, filled with nothing but joy, laughter, and romance. And Freddie simply couldn’t keep his eyes off of you. You were gorgeous. 

He could tell that you’d spent hours getting ready; your hair and make-up were flawless, but what was truly captivating was your smile. The dimples by your lips, that you’ve always hated so such, but he loved so wholeheartedly, because it meant that you were happy.

As you were standing there, talking to some of the other guests with a drink in your hand, it was like Freddie’s feet moved all by themselves. The magnetic attraction between the two of you, made him slowly yet determined walk in your direction; and as you felt his presence near you, you turned around and as your eyes met the soft expression on his alluring, handsome face, your heart melted all over again.   

“Please, dance with we?” he simply asked, husky words softly escaping his lips, and as an automatic response, your head nodded, and your mouth spoke the word ‘yes.’

One of his hands, softly took one of yours, and his other hand was placed on your hip, as your available hand gently took its place on his shoulder. You knew people were looking, but there was a not a drop of care within either of you – both just simply enjoyed and embraced he gentle touches and the air you shared between you. 

It was like everything was coming back to you, a monsoon of emotions washing over your body, mind, and soul. And oh, how it felt so good. 

As the two of you swayed softly to the music playing from the speakers, you were in a world of your own. His arms stretched to push out apart, swing you around, and then pull you back into his body. His large, warm, and solid body. The body you knew oh so well; you’d seen naked on multiple occasions; you’d been intimate with, touched, and kissed – the body of the man you’d love for three years. 

And it looked good in a suit. Freddie’s always had a great taste in suits, and you’d never held back on your compliments of the matter. But tonight, he looked exceptionally good. The summer had done him well, given him a light tan, almost brightening his already fierce ginger hair. He shone nothing but confident and self-awareness, as he once again starched his arms, pushing you apart, and then pulling you back in again.  

And then he held you tightly.

“You look beautiful,” he whispered delicately into your ear, and you felt a shiver run down your spine. His voice, the words, his breath; he had you wrapped around his finger all over again. 

You offered him a sweet smile. 

“Thank you,” you simply replied, as your eyes locked and you again swayed from side to side, holding each other closely. 

Ladies and gentlemen, will you please stand? Gently, he once again repeated the dance moves, but this time as he’d pulled you back into him, he held your hands between your chests, one still resisting on your waist, and leaned his forehead against yours. Both of you almost closed your eyes, as you leaned into each other, and mentally left the room, only letting yourself be aware of the music. You were mesmerised. Lost in another life – in a life with only you and Freddie. 

“I’ve missed you,” his words were smooth and soft, his breath warm, and his heartbeat steady. His words worked like magic, making your knees weak and leaving our mind in a haze. 

But then you felt it. The way he’d left your heart hollow when he’d broken up with you. The pain he’d caused when he spoke the words you never thought would be said between you. The dryness in your eyes, after you’d shed every single tear, you had left in you, after he’d given up on your relationship. 

So, you forced yourself to look up at him. And into the deep of his eyes, where you could almost see your own reflection. 

“Don’t play with me.” Your words were shaky, and voice close to trembling.

He kept his eyes locked on yours, and your bodies swayed towards the end of the song; and he knew, it was now or never. Either he spoke the words he so deeply, desperately needed to speak, or he’d lose you for good.

“I love you,” he almost whispered. Your pupils were shifting from side to side, as if searching for evidence of truth or lie in his soul. Your breathing increased, your palms got sweaty, and you could feel that oh so familiar and very pleasant tinge of sensation in your fingertips – it was love.

Waves of delicate softness flowed through your veins, as your heart pumped red blood spreading oxygen to your cells, filling the void within your heart with warmth, joy, comfort, and pure happiness. 

Words escaped your mouth, and air left your lungs as you spoke. “I love you too.” 

And as the last melody of the song played its tunes, Freddie’s lips found their way back it their rightful place: to your lips, in a tender kiss.

18. what hair products do you use?

ahhh i keep a really simple hair care routine. i oil once every week (personally i prefer grapeseed oil---it's my holy grail for hair, skin and tattoo care). i'll leave it in either a few hours or ovn and then shampoo & condition + diffuse. for shampoo + conditioner i like the kérastase brand. and then daily i spritz my hair with a rose + mint and aloe spray. and i only ever use a bamboo brush.

23. how do you feel about chilly weather?

my ideal temperature is in the low 60s f range. anything higher than 75 runs a bit too hot for me personally. i hate the snow, though. the perfect weather is when there's a lot of cold rain and fog.

39. do you use lip balm?

i use the vaseline rosy lip therapy at night and the rhode beauty peptide lip tint during the day <3

42. an app you frequently use besides this godforsaken site?

i really like this app called alltrails. whenever i'm looking to go hiking or find a good spot to kayak i'll spend hours on the app trying to find a good trail that fits my current wants. i go hiking year round (a few times a week) so it sees a lot of use.

We love Alyssa Wong in this house

So in Spirit World there's two separate panels that show Cass' family/loved ones. The first I think is more circulated:

The second is this one:

These line-ups are probably different due to space/convenience, but to overanalyse these panels for a bit, it's interesting who's present in which. Bruce, Steph, and Babs are present in both - makes sense, they're the most important figures in Cass' life. Steph is front and center in both, suggesting she really is Cass' favourite person ever.

Bruce is relatively big in the top panel, but much smaller in the bottom. The top panel explicitly is about "family," while the bottom is about people who "know and love you". Bruce becoming smaller suggests that Cass thinks of him as her dad, but the 'knowing' and 'loving' part isn't as secure for her. (This is probably not intentional but reflects their dynamic very well, particularly post-Cass being sent to HK and her unresolved feelings about that).

Babs is pretty big in both, and I love that she's Oracle here (the wheelchair in the bottom panel!!). This makes total sense - the time when Babs loved and cared for her most was when she was Oracle. Cass probably still sees and remembers her that way.

Onto the interesting stuff, which is Duke being missing for 'family' but present for 'know and love you'. I think he should be in the top panel, but maybe he's too new for Cass to consider him family? Everyone in the top panel is from the bg 2000 era, so Cass might think of that time as her true 'family'. Anyway, the fact he makes it into the bottom still shows they're close, and that Cass considers him someone who understands/'knows' her.

Dick and Tim being present for 'family' and missing for 'know and love you' is so fun. Tim maybe should be present in the bottom, but recent canon hasn't made them as close as they used to be (in BG 2000 and Red Robin). So they love each other, but not to the extent of anyone in the bottom panel; he's still definitively family though.

Dick is the same, but there's a lot more sibling rivalry and complicated feelings there. It makes total sense for Cass to see him as a brother, but to not think he 'knows' or 'loves' her all that much; they do get along, but I think they remember their mistakes with each other and think the other person still holds a grudge (they don't). Peak Dick-Cass dynamic to me!

So if I had to rank Cass' favourite people in the Batfam according to these panels, it'd be: 1. Steph 2. Babs 3. Bruce 4. Tim and/or Duke 5. Dick
