Autistic Anime Boys Tournament Bracket

Heeey guys! It’s finally time for our next tournament! Get ready to pit all your favorite autistic anime* boys against one another~ 😈😈😈 The same rules as the autistic anime girls poll apply here, but I will reiterate them below.

*Note: I understand that the term ‘anime’ does not, semantically, apply to every character that I will allow into the poll—I am simply using the term in a general manner, because it is quick to say and widely recognized. Characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games/visual novels, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.

No western media, unless the characters are deliberately designed in an 'anime-style’ (ex: in the past, I have allowed characters from things like DDLC). It can't be a temporary or one-off gag style-change either. It must be the series' regular artstyle. Judging this will be my subjective opinion, but I am going to be excluding animation that stylistically toes the line (sorry AtLA and VLD fans).

Don't submit Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100. His autism swag is too powerful and iconic, so I've decided he will be the mascot of this tourney. The winner of the poll will be rewarded with a special exhibition match against Mob. 👍👍

The characters do not need to be canonically autistic. Headcanons are perfectly fine.

You can submit as many characters as you like, but do not submit the same character multiple times.

Definitely send propaganda for the contestants! I love hearing people infodump about their favs.

This time around, I will not make submitting propaganda a requirement on the form, but it does significantly increase your character’s chances of getting into the bracket.

I will attempt to be more selective for this poll, to avoid an enormous bracket like last time (I just have a tendency to get attached to submissions and can’t help but let in as many as I can 😅), but I won’t officially decide on the number of competitors until after submissions close.

Welcome to the fourth spicy male poll to be held on this blog!

RULES:

Characters must be fictional

Characters must be 18+ in their original media

Characters must be male (cis or trans) or masculine presenting nonbinary or genderfluid

Characters must be considered a male 'monster'. Monster can be constituted as "an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening" and can be found in any genre such as fantasy, horror, supernatural, sci-fi, contemporary, etc.

Characters can be from a variety of fandoms and genres including but not limited to: TV Shows, Movies, Plays/Musicals, Games, Cartoons, Anime/Manga, Books, Graphic Novels, Comics, Webseries, Webcomics, and Podcasts

Characters, while monsters, should be human-like (have human sentience) and not be straight up animals.

Furries allowed on a case by case basis 

No original characters (OC’s)

No Bandoms

No Minecrafters

No real figures such as celebrities', youtubers, or streamers

Do you find psychological related shows or movies or anything basically interesting? What do you think when people try to police you on what you like?

Seeing as the two long-form American shows that I’ve properly sat down and watched are Criminal Minds and NBC’s Hannibal, yeah, I think that’s a fair assumption, ahaha. I thrive of crime shows, particularly ones that deal with psychology. They need to be at least 65% accurate regarding mental illness for me to tolerate, though. That may seem like a low standard, but you’ll find that’s a pretty difficult threshold to meet.

As for your second question, I think it is always important to acknowledge that if someone is trying to police your interest, it is because they see something questionable or possibly damaging in it. Before turning it into an issue of them trying to control you (which may sometimes be the case), it’s important to try and see the issue from their side. Upon doing so, you’ll often come to one of three conclusions: 

They’re right, and you will try to stop in light of this realization;

They’re right, but you’re still invested, so you compromise;

You acknowledge that you two have different takes on the content in question but still respect their opinion.

More below the cut because this is getting long, ahaha.

For me, the first option often stems from ignorance. Perhaps I didn’t realize that a certain character was negatively stereotyped or that a mental illness was being demonized, and perhaps now I see it was done in an actively malicious manner, and that’s enough to change my desire to support something.

The second option goes for movies such as Split, in which I am curious about the movie and want to see it for myself, but I don’t want to contribute to its financial success because I object to its content. I may or may not illegally stream the movie later.

The third option is often the most common; for example, though I don’t read Killing Stalking anymore, at the time there were several people who reached out to me and told me not to read it as they found it to be homophobic, fetishistic, ableist, and graphic. My experience of the comic was different, but I took the time to consider where these opinions were coming from. 

I tried to think of ways that my identity might bias me on such an issue (including factors such as, but not limited to, being aromantic, asexual, a cisgender woman, and a psychological-horror fan), and then I did research on elements I was unsure of, such as seeking out opinions on the comic from individuals with BPD to gather opinions on whether or not the portrayal in the comic was grossly offensive. The opinions were mixed, and again, I could see both sides.

Ultimately, I found logic in their viewpoint, and then I found the logic in mine, and I found a potential reason for our diverging viewpoints. Through this exercise, I learned something about the life experience of another person, and though I continued to read Killing Stalking (acknowledging that perhaps learning about its supposed problematic elements after I started reading might have biased me), putting this amount of thought into the issue will help me be more mindful before I start reading the next webcomic with such content. And that time around, it won’t be others policing me either; it will just be me with my new knowledge making my own decision about my own enjoyment.

Also, in general, it’s good practice to tag stuff so people can block content they don’t like. There’s no harm in making your blog more accessible to people.

When it comes to dealing with interest police, there are a lot of people who might say, “It’s just fiction - let people enjoy whatever they want,” but as someone who wants to be a novelist because of the power of fiction, I can’t agree with that opinion. Fiction is a force of change and a force of idea. Propagation and popularization of damaging works can lead to a dangerous social mindset (that’s how propaganda happens, after all), and that is something that we have to acknowledge.

Again, it is not enough to think that just because you yourself can enjoy something while critiquing it, that the content should be let off scot free. In an ideal society, everyone would recognize and criticize content they consume. Unfortunately, that’s not our society. Some people are content to consume junk without further thought. 

Ultimately, people can enjoy whatever they want to, but I’m firmly in the belief that they can do the enjoying after they put some time into thinking critically. If you like something, know why you enjoy something (not just what you enjoy about it!) before you do. That’s the bare minimum you have to do before deciding someone else is stupid for disliking something, and I find that if I have put in this much effort into understanding my own enjoyment, I can be more confident when interest-police come knocking.

Autistic Anime Girls Tournament Bracket

Hi there! Self-explanatory title, but this is an Autistic Anime Girls Competition! Here we strive to determine: Who is tumblr's top anime girlie on the spectrum? Though I'm using 'anime' as a general term, characters from print media (i.e. manga, manhwa, manhua), ‘anime-style’ webcomics and games, and from non-Japanese East Asian animation like donghua and hanguk aeni are welcome as well.

Some stuff to know:

The character does not have to be canonically autistic (though canon autistic rep is very much appreciated). Headcanons are allowed and expected.

Though I love them, autistic girls from western animation are not allowed in this particular competition.

This competition will be a more relaxed schedule than my last tumblr poll, so that I don't stress and overstretch myself, haha. I may take a few days' break between rounds instead of instantly releasing the next batch of polls right away. This should also help keep the blog from getting shadow-banned.
