DJIBOUTI DEVIL’S ISLAND
Devil’s Island is a bulbous, volcanic island at the innermost part of the Gulf of Tadjourah, an area called the Ghoubet. Everyone who drives the snaking coastal road from Djibouti’s capital city to Tadjourah passes the bay and comments on the black hill rising up out of the sea. It is tantalizingly close to shore, yet out of reasonable reach due to strong winds and waves.
Explorer Jacques Cousteau supposedly discovered a massive wild beast beneath the water surrounding the island, a beast so terrifying the world was not ready to face its existence.
Lake Ghoubbet is a Djiboutian cove separated from the Gulf of Tadjoura by a narrow channel historically known to have violent currents. 🤔

It's funny because that's what Ethiopia is doing with its neighbour, Somalia, by recognising Somaliland as a separate state in order to gain access to a port that would be under Ethiopian control. Ethiopia was offered access to a port, Tadjourah, in Djibouti, to ease tensions, but the latter seems to have changed its mind, offering only partial control of the port, instead of full control it had proposed earlier. Tensions remain high on the Horn.

“Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed warned on Sunday that his country would “humiliate” any nation that threatens its sovereignty, in an escalation of the war of words after Egypt signed a security pact last month with Somalia…
“Cairo and Addis Ababa have been at loggerheads for years, trading incendiary words over Ethiopia’s massive hydroelectric dam project, which Egypt says threatens its fragile water security.”

I’ve been seeing photos of this “house” surfacing all over tumblr. Come to find out it’s an entire village/orphanage in Djibouti and the architecture is specifically designed to combat the extreme climate of the region.
