"STU: MY FRIEND, MY BROTHER"

"Tattoo artist and teacher @Stu.McDonald is convinced taa moko (traditional Māori tattoo) can play a role in healing emotional pain," he told Radio New Zealand after he and his wife lost their teenage son to bone cancer. A little over an hour drive from McDonald's home town of Tauranga, fellow New Zealander Owen Dippie says he grew up surrounded by individuals with strong cultural identities, heavily influencing the direction his portrait work took. McDonald began the mataora (facial tattoo) work-in-progress on his face more than a decade ago, at more or less the same time Dippie began painting his highly acclaimed large-scale mural portraits on the streets of New Zealand and New York. Dippie kicked off 2019 by adding this portrait at @TheContainerYard in the Los Angeles Arts District, capturing the progress of his beloved countryman.  @owendippie/

Husbands Validation:

When looking for validation whether to get my moko kauwae I asked my husband Bj Black. Besides my mothers approval I wanted his and the approval of our daughters, the way I saw it this man and our daughters had seen me at my best, worse, ugly and seen me thru some hard times as well as put up with my shit, and if anyone he would be the one person to look at it for the rest of our lives together I valued his opinion.  It was the hardest thing I could of ever asked for fear he would say No!! His grandmother Ngapera Paraki Taahu was one of the last wahine to recieve moko kauwae  traditionally at a very young age and so it was something that was close to his heart and his Tuhoe roots If I remember correctly he said nothing.........I walked away confused and started over thinking EVERYTHING......to the point of cold sweats and anger then pure determination for me determination is not good, as for 2 of our 3 babies when they heard who was doing my moko kauwae they were wrapped as they had stalked Anikaaro Harawira-Havili taamoko since they found out she was one of my closest friends sisters they became my biggest supporters <3....finally I took his silence as a nah!!...as I write I hear the song by Justin Beiber in my head “Is it too late to say Im sorry!!” ........ two weeks later many conversations and texts I headed to Moerewa to awhi the whanau to take Te Korowai waka up north to Pawarenga for Te Rarawa wananga Mauri Ora Mai Tawhito the night before we got word one of our brothers from Mauri Ora died in an accident in Turangi and ironically we had a Mokopapa wananga in Waimanoni, Kaitaia the very next day, where I recieved my Moko Kauwae with my daughters in tow, a week later I graduated Mauri Ora as a Whanau, Hapu and Iwi Practitioner at Tauarau marae, Ruatoki. We stayed at Rewarewa marae where my husbands grandmother and father are buried across the road so everyday I went to see them for forgiveness or rather help on how I would break the news to my husband as we were the result of a tomo since I was 19, I was scared because like my typical strong willed pigheaded self I hadn't seen him for two weeks and never considered how he would react due to my determination I was preparing myself for my husband to walk away from our marriage. I was freaking out until finally I saw him and the first words he said was “Are you ok?” The moment I said yes and he gave me the biggest hug ever thats when I realized this man will always love me unconditionally no matter what I do!!

If I could do it all different I would but for me if life drops things in front of me I’m going to embrace it with no regerts!! We have one chance, one opportunity with one life so I live every moment like its my last!! Life will always push me where I need to be at that precise place, at the precise time <3
