Medieval Game Pieces Emerge From the Ruins of a German Castle
A small cache of medieval game pieces has been discovered in the ruins of a recently discovered castle in southern Germany. The finds provide a window into leisure time, possibly among actual knights, dating back nearly a millennium, approximately the time that chess arrived in Europe as an import from Asia.
The find includes a six-sided die, assorted game pieces including four in the shape of flowers, and a very well-preserved 1½-inch-high chess piece, all carved from antlers.
“In the Middle Ages, chess was one of the seven skills that a good knight should master,” said Jonathan Scheschkewitz, of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments Baden-Württemberg. “It is therefore not surprising that known finds mostly come from castles.”
There is evidence that these are not just display objects, but pieces that were actually used. “Under the microscope,” explained Flavia Venditti of the University of Tübingen, “a typical sheen from holding and moving the pieces can be seen.”
An international team of experts from the University of Tübingen, the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments Baden-Württemberg and the German Archaeological Institute is now examining this evidence of early gaming culture.
“The discovery of an entire games collection [from] the 11th/12th century came as a complete surprise to us,” said Lukas Werther, of the German Archaeological Institute, “and the horse-shaped knight piece is a real highlight.”
The pieces came to light during excavations by the DFG Collaborative Research Centre 1070 Resource Cultures and the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments Baden-Württemberg in a previously unknown castle in the Reutlingen district of southern Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region.
“They were lying under the debris of a wall where they were lost or hidden in the Middle Ages,” said Michael Kienzle of the University of Tübingen. They are in such good condition, he added, precisely because they had been covered under those materials.
They will go on display this month in two exhibitions: “Excavated! Knights and Castles in the Echaz Valley” at the Schlössle Pfullingen (June 15–August 30) and “The Hidden Länd: We in the First Millennium” at the Archaologisches Landsmuseum Baden-Württemberg (September 13, 2024–January 26, 2025).

The Enchanting Lichtenstein Castle
History Today we look at the picturesque Lichtenstein Castle, located on a cliff overlooking the Echaz Valley in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The castle’s location adds to its fairy-tale appearance and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It remains a stunning example of the blend between literature and architecture, inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s novel "Lichtenstein," and brought to life by Count Wilhelm of Württemberg between 1840 and 1842.
Image attribution - Martha Sales
Hauff’s novel romanticized the ideals of medieval chivalry and heroism. The 19th century experienced a resurgence in interest in medieval history and architecture, a trend known as historicism. Count Wilhelm sought to create a physical embodiment of the novel's themes and settings. Neuschwanstein Castle itself was influenced by similar romantic and historicist ideals and a 2009 filming of "Dornröschen" - The Sleeping Beauty - further cemented Lichtenstenstein's place in popular culture. The family of the Dukes of urach which began when Wilhem was granted the title maintains ownership to this day. The castle serves both as a private residence for the family and a public attraction, allowing visitors to explore its historical and architectural significance.
What You Will See When you visit, you'll find the striking castle keep, complete with turrets and battlements that offer fantastic views of the surrounding Echaz Valley. The interior of Lichtenstein Castle is adorned with period furnishings, weapons, and armor, providing visitors with a glimpse into the romanticized vision of medieval life. Guided tours are available.

Restaurants such as Forellenhof Rössle and Albgasthof Lichtenstein offer delicious local cuisine and hospitality. For dessert, you can visit Bäckerei Konditorei Padeffke in Reutlingen, which is renowned for its delightful pastries and cakes. Though as you can imagine, there's more than one bakery. Accomodation For accommodation, one of the most liked places to stay in Honau is the Forellenhof Rössle, which offers cozy rooms and great dining. Its proximity to Lichtenstein Castle makes it a convenient and charming option for visitors. Places Nearby Hohenzollern Castle: Located about 40 kilometers away, Hohenzollern is one of Germany's most iconic castles. For accommodations in the Reutlinger area, Hotel Fürstenhof Reutlingen is a highly rated choice known for its comfortable rooms and friendly service. It’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring nature and engaging in activities such as hiking and spelunking. It’s a great family-friendly attraction that offers a unique underground adventure. Day Trips Stuttgart: The capital of Baden-Württemberg is approximately 60 kilometers from Lichtenstein. Stuttgart has a vibrant cultural scene and is famous for its automotive museums, including the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum. It is that time of the year again where we emerge from the Keller...
...to bemoan the loss of yet another lost place (or several). Again, Southern Germany was really quick to deal with some of its most beloved lost places. When we cross-checked our address list with google maps/street view last year in August, they were still there.
THANK YOU Century-old Brickyard and House of Creepy Showers. We never found a way inside and now we never will. You've been lovely and creepy and you will be missed.
(Location reveal: brickyard Im Geiselrein, Frickenhausen, Baden-Württemberg) THANK YOU abandoned residence Along the Old Railroad Tracks, we've had plans to revisit you some time soon - only to find you were gone, too. You were one of our firsts and you will never be forgotten.
(Location reveal: Abandoned home close to the old railroad coming from the former freight yard, Eisenbahnstrasse, Tübingen)

Deutschribing Germany: regions
Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg)
Baden-Württemberg is divided into thirty-five districts (Landkreise) and nine independent cities (Stadtkreise), both grouped into the four administrative districts (Regierungsbezirke) of Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, and Tübingen. The capital city is Stuttgart.
Climate
The predominant climate type is warm-summer humid continental, but the western part (Baden) has a subtropical highland climate. As a result, in most parts of Baden, the climate is warm almost all year round and summers are mostly dry, while winters are wet and foggy.
The rest of the state has more temperate temperatures, especially in summer. Areas of high elevation get snow frequently, and summers are rainier than in Baden.
Due to the climate differences, average annual temperatures range from 5 °C (41 °F) in the Black Forest to 13 °C (55 °F) in the subtropical areas.
Economy
Although Baden-Württemberg has relatively few natural resources compared to other German states, it is among the most prosperous and wealthiest regions in Europe.
The state is known for its strong industries, including car manufacturing, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. It hosts the headquarters of some of the largest German companies, such as Borsch, Mercedes-Benz Group, Porsche, and Schwarz Group (owner of Kaufland and Lidl).
Baden-Württemberg is also a popular holiday destination, including a variety of sights like the residential court towns of Ludwigsburg and Karlsruhe, the spas of Baden-Baden, the medieval architecture of Ulm, the Black Forest, and the traditional university towns of Heidelberg and Tübingen.

There are two distinct regional cuisines: those of Baden and Swabia. The cuisine of Baden is considered one of the best regional cuisines in Germany and is based on fruit, herbs, vegetables, game, poultry, fish, smoked products, wine, and beer. It has many influences from Alsace and Switzerland. Specialties include Flammkuchen (pizza with thin crust) and Schäufele (pig's shoulder meat).
Swabian cuisine has a reputation for being rustic but rich and hearty. It is characterized by fresh egg pasta, soups, sausages, broths, and sauces. The most famous specialties are Maultaschen (meat and spinach-filled dumplings, either fried or served in broth) and pretzels.

Castle in Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Lichtenstein Castle is a privately owned Gothic Revival castle located in the Swabian Jura of southern Germany. It was designed by Carl Alexander Heideloff and its name means "shining stone" or "bright stone". The castle overlooks the Echaz valley near Honau, Reutlingen in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Address: Schloss Lichtenstein 1, 72805 Lichtenstein, Germany
Honau
Honau, Lichtenstein, a former municipality, currently part of Lichtenstein, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Lichtenstein is a municipality in the Tübingen administrative region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies at the foot of the Swabian Jura (plateau).
The municipality of Lichtenstein was created on 1 January 1975 by the merger of Honau, Holzelfingen, and Unterhausen (which had in 1930 merged with Oberhausen). By the agreement made before this merger, Unterhausen changed its name to Lichtenstein, after the famous Lichtenstein Castle above the town. The towns of the municipality expanded substantially from 1975 to 1990 thanks to tourism. Lichtenstein expanded the most, first purchasing an old industrial site in 1979 to turn it into a new town center

Exploring the Role of a Psychotherapist in Tübingen: Navigating Mental Health Challenges with Compassion and Expertise
In the picturesque town of Tübingen, nestled in the heart of Germany's Baden-Württemberg region, a vital figure quietly works behind the scenes, offering solace and guidance to those grappling with the complexities of the human mind. The psychotherapist in Tübingen embodies a beacon of hope for individuals navigating the tumultuous waters of mental health challenges.
Understanding Psychotherapy:
Before delving into the unique landscape of psychotherapy in Tübingen, it's crucial to grasp the essence of psychotherapy itself. At its core, psychotherapy is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and an individual or group, aiming to foster mental health and alleviate psychological distress. Through various therapeutic techniques and approaches, psychotherapists help individuals explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, facilitating personal growth and improved well-being.
The Psychotherapeutic Journey in Tübingen:
Tübingen, with its rich cultural heritage and vibrant community, provides an ideal backdrop for the practice of psychotherapy. Here, individuals seeking support for a myriad of mental health concerns find themselves in the capable hands of compassionate and experienced psychotherapists.
One such psychotherapist in Tübingen may specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), focusing on identifying and modifying maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors. Another may offer psychodynamic therapy, delving into the unconscious mind and past experiences to unravel the roots of current psychological struggles. Additionally, therapists may integrate elements of mindfulness-based approaches, humanistic therapy, or systemic therapy, tailoring their methods to suit the unique needs of each client.
The Importance of Psychotherapy in Tübingen:
In a fast-paced world fraught with stressors and uncertainties, the need for accessible and effective mental health support has never been more pressing. Psychotherapy in Tübingen serves as a cornerstone of the community's well-being, offering a safe space for individuals to explore their innermost thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment.
Moreover, psychotherapy plays a crucial role in destigmatizing mental health issues in Tübingen and beyond. By promoting open dialogue and raising awareness, psychotherapists contribute to a culture of acceptance and understanding surrounding mental illness, paving the way for greater empathy and support within the community.
Challenges and Opportunities:
Despite its many benefits, psychotherapy in Tübingen faces its own set of challenges. From navigating bureaucratic hurdles to addressing cultural and linguistic barriers, psychotherapists must continually adapt their practices to meet the diverse needs of their clients. Additionally, the growing demand for mental health services underscores the importance of expanding access to affordable and culturally sensitive care.
Nevertheless, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and collaboration within the field of psychotherapy. By embracing teletherapy and digital platforms, psychotherapists in Tübingen can reach individuals who may otherwise struggle to access traditional in-person services. Furthermore, forging partnerships with local community organizations and healthcare providers can help foster a more holistic approach to mental health care, addressing the intersecting social, economic, and environmental factors that influence well-being.
Conclusion:
In the tapestry of Tübingen's community, the psychotherapist occupies a vital role, weaving together threads of compassion, expertise, and resilience. Through their dedication and commitment, psychotherapists in Tübingen empower individuals to embark on transformative journeys of self-discovery and healing, enriching the fabric of the community one therapeutic encounter at a time. As Tübingen continues to evolve and grow, the presence of skilled and compassionate psychotherapists ensures that no one walks alone on the path to mental well-being.
