240619 "THE BOYZ Younghoon's Blue": Younghoon Interview for BEAUTY+ July 2024 Issue [Full Translation]

This is already the magazine’s July issue. Summer is here. What comes to mind when you think of “summer”?

Younghoon: I have a vague memory of jumping off the diving board in Everland’s “Caribbean Bay”. I can’t forget the first time I challenged something like that in my life.

This is also the season of vacation. What kind of traveler is Younghoon?

Younghoon: “Spontaneous traveler”. (laughs) I’m the type to not do anything during travels and just rest while looking at a beautiful view. That’s why I like resorts/holiday destinations. Recently I went on a trip to Gangneun with New and Q, and they made all the plans instead of me.

Do you match well with those two members?

Younghoon: Q has a similar style to mine, New is a bit different, but thankfully he followed us well. So we could really enjoy ourselves comfortably.

If you were to go on a trip with another member(s), who would you like it to be and where do you want to go?

Younghoon: I want to go to Sapporo or Okinawa with Sunwoo. Sunwoo is also the spontaneous type so we match well, and surprisingly, if I follow Sunwoo, the place always ends up being beautiful. So I think it would be fun to travel with Sunwoo.

You’ve been accumulating experiences, but what is something that is still difficult?

Younghoon: Everything I do for the first time is difficult. Of course that I think I’m less nervous than I used to be, but even so, whenever I challenge something new, for instance, a variety show, or being an MC for <Show! Music Core>, or a pictorial, things that I’m doing individually instead of as a group activity, I still get a little nervous.

You’re challenging a variety talkshow with actor Kim Heesun and comedians Lee Soogeun and Lee Eunji for the first time, right?

Younghoon: I knew that I would be together with some really incredible sunbaenims, so for the first episode I was truly so worried. But the PD had trusted and chosen me, so I wanted to do my part well. I think the most important thing when participating in a show with such a comfortable atmosphere is exactly that, not worrying too much. If I get worried, there’s nothing I can do. But Soogeun hyung, Heesun noona, Eunji noona, the writers and PDs were so nice that now I don’t feel burdened and can just enjoy the vibes of the gathering. It’s a recording, but I treat it with the mindset of “hanging out”, “chatting” with friends. Since I’m the maknae, everyone is so kind to me, and that’s something I’m thankful for.

It seems like there are moments when you miss your members while doing individual activities. (laughs) What do you think is a positive aspect you receive from the members?

Younghoon: We do many things together, so there are moments when I’m tired or struggling in which just having the members by my side is enough to give me strength. When I’m alone, I need to comfort myself and get up on my own. (laughs) I tell myself “you can do it, you gotta try”. But when the members are there, they’re the ones doing that kind of comforting and cheering. So by receiving that kind of energy I can work hard together with everyone.

You’re known as an idol who communicates very earnestly with fans. What kind of existence are the fans to Younghoon?

Younghoon: I’m also receiving love every day, and for that reason I want to repay the fans with love every day as well. Moreover, on my birthday so many fans congratulate me, while I can’t actually congratulate those who like me on their birthdays. So I started sending messages daily because I wanted to wish them a happy birthday. I’m like a sprout that’s still growing. (laughs) The fans are an existence like the sun. I will keep growing even bigger while looking at the fans.

Like the fans keep sending Younghoon warm love, is there anything Younghoon has been falling in love with recently?

Younghoon: There have been many things like that recently. With a mindset of trying to spend my time alone productively, I’ve been trying to put that into practice with a few different things. One of those is boxing. I’m working out diligently too. Instead of spending a day doing nothing, I think it’s important to make sure to do something and get a sense of accomplishment, to feel “I achieved that”. Even if it’s something really small.

Half of the year has already passed by. How do you want to spend the rest of the year?

Younghoon: Starting now, I’m about to get really busy. We’re doing a world tour until September. I’m looking forward to all the concerts in different cities around the world, and as a team we’re hoping that we can develop even more than how we are now. Personally, I want to fill the remainder of the year with happy memories.

Younghoon: “Blue Island (파란섬)” by Airman (공기남). If you listen to it, summer just seeps into your mind. And I start smiling without reason. I’ve recommended it a lot to the fans, but I hope everyone, no matter who, can listen to it. (laughs)

230725 "21st Century Boyz": Younghoon Interview for Arena Homme+ (ENG)

We’ve heard you were cast while eating bread at the convenience store. What did you have to eat this morning?

YH: My first meal today was the musubi available at the photoshoot site. It was delicious. (laughs) I’m not the kind who eats well in the morning. I make sure to eat lunch and dinner instead.

What do you have on days where you have a photoshoot like today, or on days where you think “I did well today”?

YH: I drink whiskey. I like Jack Daniels and Balvenie. If I go home, wash up, and drink [whiskey] on the rocks before bed, I’ll feel that “I’ve worked hard today”. (laughs)

The yakgwa pastry is popular these days. What are some of your recent interests?

YH: Vintage. We’ve been going a lot to Japan these days so I went into a vintage shop and bought two or so shirts and I’m wearing them day and night. It was a brown shirt that had all this paint on it so it was strangely eye-catching. I tried it on and immediately bought it. Ah, I’m into something else too: dried salmon. There’s dried salmon in every convenience store in Japan. I buy a lot of it every time I go there. It’s so delicious.

We’re always curious about what kind of things an idol buys when they go abroad but vintage shirts and dried salmon sure are unexpected. If your company said “starting from tomorrow, enjoy one week of vacation, do everything you want,” what would you want to do?

YH: Ohh. First, I think I’d go home. I want to meet with my friends in the neighborhood, go on a long overdue date with my family. To be honest, I don’t really like going abroad. Because I’m too scared of planes. (laughs) Even so, if I had a vacation I’d want to go on a trip with my family after a long time. Either Tokyo or Okinawa would be nice.

So you plan vacations like any office worker. What’s your preferred stress reliever? Personally, I start by ordering chicken.

YH: I discovered while working that I'm surprisingly not the kind to get stressed. There’s been times when I couldn’t sleep for days, so of course my body got tired. But I’ve never felt like “I’m annoyed”, or “I don’t want to do this”. Even if I get annoyed, within an hour I’m over it. I don’t even think “I shouldn’t be stressed”, I just don’t get stressed? So with that I realized [mine] is a really well-suited personality for this job.

You’re a good member of society. Earlier during the shooting you were eyeing a watch in the studio. Are you into watches?

YH: I really like watches. I feel good just looking at them. I don’t wear one everyday but looking at a ticking clock makes me happy.

Do you have a collection too?

YH: I have about 4 or 5 at home. I only buy the bracelet models for watches.

We’ve heard that you bought gifts for your parents and for your older brother with the first money you earned in your life. Did you gift them watches at the time?

YH: Yes. (laughs) I gave watches to my older brother and to my mom, and I gave shoes and a belt to my dad. It was my mom’s birthday recently so my brother and I collected our money and bought her a bag as a gift.

What was her reaction?

YH: Funny thing is, we’ve been thinking of buying her a bag for a while now, but my mom picked it up first and said “buy this one for me”. So we bought that one, of course. Her reaction was really good.

I’m scared my mom will see this interview and give me a call. Did you ever think of using a stage name? I’m curious to know if there were any candidates.

YH: Back when the company told us to choose a stage name, I picked “아이” (T/N: Literally “A-I”, pronounced as “eye”), “i” in English. There was no special reason, I just thought it looked cool. (laughs) The company rejected it. Now I’m grateful that they did.

You’re famous for your love for your dog, Bori. Let’s have a “Bori pride” moment.

YH: It’s “our Bori”. (laughs) If I go back home after six months, she recognizes me right away. She greets me and cries for a good few minutes. Then she takes me to my room, which has been empty for a while. Usually Bori sleeps on the bed with my mom, but when I go home she needs to sleep in my bed.

It’s moving to have a dog with you often.

YH: Absolutely. I hear that when I’m not home, she doesn’t even care about my room. Even so, she always greets me so enthusiastically, for that alone I’m very grateful and very proud. She’s the most lovely existence in my life.

We’ve heard you like BTS’ V among artists. Do you have a role model now?

YH: I don’t. If I pick a role model, I could start unknowingly copying them. Now I have a strong desire to become a cooler and better Younghoon who receives love from fans.

This year marks 6 years since your debut. Is there anything you felt has changed about you since that time?

YH: What changed the most is how I feel about the fans. During debut, I used to think “why do these people like me?”. Of course I’m grateful. But then again, I had released one song as a member of THE BOYZ and was thinking “but will they like it, what can I do to repay them”. Now I’m not that wary. I like the fans very much as well. My relationship with TheBs is that we have formed a bond over time. It’s more than just living up to their love and expectations; now I think “I must give these people reasons to like me”, “they shouldn’t be ashamed to say they’re a fan of Younghoon.”

This is a vague question but to Younghoon, what kind of person is a cool person?

YH: It’s a person with manners. When you see someone being rude (T/N: with no manners), you start wondering [what the person does] when you can’t see it, right? You think “that person must be like that everywhere”. Likewise, a person with manners makes you think “that person must be kind to everyone”. Being a good person isn’t that big of a deal. I think that a person who says “thank you” with a smile after buying something at the convenience store won’t behave like a rude person anywhere else.

Last question. What kind of singer, what kind of person would Younghoon like to be 10 years from now?

YH: A singer who does his best at his job. I want to be remembered as a singer who liked and treasured his fans. I’ll be in my 30s so I’d like to be doing what I want even better than now. If it’s hard, that’s fine. I’ll be happy if I’m in my 30s enjoying doing my best at the things I want to do.

240429 THE BOYZ Interview for Newsen: “We don’t take the fans’ love for granted… The driving force behind 7 years of growth = TheBs” [Full Translation]

“With TheBs in mind, we will make even cooler music and stages for a long time.”

Group THE BOYZ (Younghoon, Juyeon, Hyunjae, Sunwoo, Q, Ju Haknyeon, Sangyeon, Kevin, Jacob, Eric, New) took part in the 2024 ASIA ENTERTAINER AWARDS (ASEA 2024) on April 10th at Yokohama’s K-Arena in Japan. For this ceremony, THE BOYZ took home 3 trophies, from THE BEST STAGE to THE BEST STAR to THE BEST CONCEPTUAL ARTIST. The 3 wins showed once again that these are global artists that receive love both at home and abroad.

About the awards:

Younghoon: We won 3 awards and I am so grateful to be given such amazing awards. Moving forward, we will show an even further developed image. I think of these awards as a reason to work even harder, and we will put in the effort to show many cooler sides of us in the future. Conversely, THE BOYZ will gift TheBs the “Smile Award” so they can continue to smile moving forward.

Kevin: It’s an honor to win 3 awards. We will put in the effort and work hard to continue to be TheBs' pride in the future as well. More than anything, I think of this as an award given to THE BOYZ by TheBs. To our TheBs who are always by our side cheering us on, thank you and I love you.

New: We very thankfully won 3 awards at ASEA 2024. I want to convey my biggest thanks to our TheBs who are always cheering us on and cherishing us. In the future too, we will work hard to meet your expectations by giving you more, cooler versions of THE BOYZ’s unique performances and music.

About the performance at ASEA 2024:

Juyeon: Since we were going on stage with two powerful songs, WATCH IT and Breaking Dawn, we prepared with a focus on the performance. In particular, we tried to blend in krump [steps] into the performance. We practiced powerful dances and acrobatics extensively. We gave special attention and practiced a lot of natural expressions, gestures etc that would fit the mood of the songs.

Eric: We really immersed ourselves in the performance while preparing. Since it was a space where we would meet much of the K-Pop public, we paid attention to the energy and live [stage] that would be able to bring the heat up during the concert.

About their remarkable sales records, PHANTASY trilogy, and the good results from Nectar:

Sangyeon: I’m really happy and grateful that TheBs showed sincere support and positive reactions to the album as soon as it came out. Moreover, I’m also glad that we can achieve good results. We worked hard on promotions for PHANTASY pt.3 “Love Letter” and were able to finish it well, so we will repay with the concerts this coming July. Thank you always and I love you.

Hyunjae: Firstly, I’m so immensely grateful to our TheBs for giving us good results as soon as the album came out. I think TheBs' hearts are so beautiful and they’re so admirable for always putting in the effort to give us good results. We will work even harder moving forward to be able to repay all the love TheBs give us.

Ju Haknyeon: Pt.3 “Love Letter”, that finishes our 2nd full album [trilogy], was released to repay the love we receive from fans. I’m just happy and really grateful that [TheBs] gave us so much love and good results. When I see the results TheBs give us, it makes me want to work harder and do even better. Please keep looking after us, TheB.

About the past 7 years of different concepts and constant growth and what drives them forward:

(T/N: In Korean you don't necessarily need to make the distinction between "I" and "we" so in some cases here you could switch it and make it so they're talking as a group, but I've chosen to use "I" since they seem to be talking specifically about their own driving forces.)

Sangyeon: Firstly, I want to say to our THE BOYZ members who have been running together for 7 years a sincere thank you and you’ve worked hard. Whenever things were hard the members leaned on each other, and seeing TheBs’ smile in front of us on stage made me forget those [hard] moments. I would say the members and the fans are my biggest source of strength and drive. I think that above everything, that was possible because the members know each other well.

Jacob: I think for me [the driving force] are TheBs and the members. We give and receive good energy from each other, and we have been able to be together for 7 years by telling each other ‘fighting’. I want to say thank you to TheBs who are always cheering us on, and to our members too, thank you always, let’s continue to run and have fun together in the future.

Younghoon: I think my biggest driving force are of course TheBs. I believe we were able to enjoy these 7 years because TheBs were always there in all of THE BOYZ’s moments. I also want to thank our company staff who have been running together with us so far. Members! It’s been 7 years now. Let’s go until 70 years, I love you. And to TheBs, thank you so much, it’s thanks to TheBs being here with us that THE BOYZ can laugh and be so happy, and have been able to grow this much, thank you so much. It’s so meaningful to have someone to want to show new sides of ourselves to, I will work harder and do even better to make sure TheBs are always happy.

Hyunjae: To me of course that my biggest driving force is TheBs. I believe it’s thanks to them always being by THE BOYZ’s side, cheering us on and giving us love, that we have been able to run this far. I don’t take TheBs’ love for granted, I'm always grateful and will do my best to repay that love. And I want to say thank you to our members for running hard together for the past 7 years.

Juyeon: Releasing albums with different concepts and challenging new things was very meaningful, and I think we were able to grow thanks to it. I believe it’s thanks to the fans’ love and interest that we have been able to promote continuously until now. I want to say thank you always. Also, I want to say to our members let’s not get complacent and let’s go even farther.

Kevin: I think the synergy between the members is really good. I believe that is why we have been able to promote happily for the past 7 years. Our members, you’ve worked hard for all that time, let’s continue to make cool memories. And to our TheBs who are always by our side cheering us on, we will work hard to continue showing you cool music and performances in the future, so please watch over us in the future too.

New: I think my driving force are TheBs. I want to say thank you to TheBs who are always by our side, cheering us on and giving us love, and to our company family for their reliable support. To the members, I really want to say thank you for being together for these 7 years.

Q: I believe we have been able to run for these 7 years thanks to TheBs' love. If TheB hadn’t been cheering us on, I think I wouldn’t have been able to gather courage and strength. These 7 years have been very eventful, but to our members who did their best together while promoting, I want to say you’ve worked hard, let’s take good care of each other moving forward too and be considerate while enjoying our promotions.

Ju Haknyeon: My top priority, and my driving force, are the fans. Believing in us and waiting for us no matter the situation can’t be easy at all, so to the TheBs who are always by our side cheering us on I want to say thank you sincerely and I love you. I can always feel TheBs’ love with my whole body. Thank you so much and I love you, TheB! And to our THE BOYZ members I want to say thank you for being together for these long 7 years, please watch over me in the future too.

Sunwoo: There were many happy moments and many hard moments in these 7 years, and I believe it’s because the members were there relying on each other that we were able to overcome it. Also, I want to say thank you so much to our TheBs for always caring for us whenever. Let’s continue to create many fun memories in the future as well.

Eric: The driving force that made it possible for me to run this hard for 7 years is of course our TheBs and our THE BOYZ members. Even in the moments when I wanted to give up, in the moments when I was exhausted, the TheBs who are always by our side cheering us on and giving us love and the members who are always there looking after me were what made it possible for me to get here. To our THE BOYZ members who are my biggest friends and my family, you’ve worked hard and thank you so much, I love you a lot. Please watch over me in the future as well and, while thinking of our TheBs who are always cheering us on, let’s make even cooler music and stages for a long time.

About the ZENERATION II world tour:

Jacob: TheB! Thank you for always being by our side cheering us on and becoming THE BOYZ’s strength. Let’s see each other a lot and make many good memories this year too. With this world tour in July, I want to see, greet, and make many more TheBs happy.

Q: I was happy that we could spend the last 7 years together with TheBs, let’s continue to give strength to each other by cherishing and cheering for each other moving forward too. Also I want to meet many more TheBs this year.
