You can’t save an institution by betraying its mission

I'm on a 20+ city book tour for my new novel PICKS AND SHOVELS. Catch me in SAN DIEGO at MYSTERIOUS GALAXY on Mar 24, and in CHICAGO with PETER SAGAL on Apr 2. More tour dates here.
Paula Le Dieu is one of the smartest, most committed archivists I know. Many years ago, she shared a neat analogy with me about the paywalling of public archives, a phenomenon that has become rampant as public institutions have been pushed to seek private funding to close the gaps left by swingeing cuts.
Closing up these archives in order to give these new "investors" a chance to make their money back is pitched as just "good business." But – as Paula pointed out – this isn't how business works at all! If you are an early-stage investor to a startup, providing patient capital in its early stages, then later investors don't get to zero out your shares. If a museum or public broadcaster is a business, then the public is the early investor, and their share is access. Taking away free access is tantamount to wiping out our investment.
But of course, public institutions aren't businesses, and they don't exist to make profits. They exist to serve the public interest. If your public health system, public education system, public archives, public museum or public parks are making a profit, then something is desperately wrong.
Managers of these public institutions forget this lesson at their peril. Every public institution eventually faces an existential funding crisis, and when that crisis strikes, the only thing that will save you is public support. Back in 2014, I got to speak to a group of curators about this when I keynoted the Museums and the Web conference in Florence:
https://mwf2014.museumsandtheweb.com/paper/glam-and-the-free-world/index.html
Since then, I've had many chances to talk with Paula about her views on archiving in these apocalyptic times. She's come up with a crisp formulation of the point I tried to make in that speech – when archives trade access off for preservation, they sign their own death warrants. As I said in my speech, if you don't maximize public access to your archive, then there will come a day when they take away your funding and the public won't care because you locked them out of their own collection. When that happens, all your careful preservation work will be used to prepare the auction catalog for the sale of your collection to the "philanthropic" billionaires who insisted that you lock up the collection in the first place. Your meticulous documentation will become the manifest for a shipping container full of formerly public treasures that will henceforth reside in a lightless, climate-controlled warehouse in the Geneva Freeport.
My conversations with Paula came back to me this weekend when I listened to Corey Rubin talking with Brooke Gladstone on NPR's On the Media, about the universities that are seeking to avert Trump's attacks by sacrificing students and faculty who spoke out against Israel's genocidal attacks on Palestine:
https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/articles/mahmoud-khalil-and-a-new-red-scare-plus-press-freedom-under-threat
From Columbia's complicity in the kidnapping of green card holder Mahmoud Khalil, a grad student now held in immigration detention in Louisiana; to Yale professor Helyeh Doutaghi, suspended because an AI-driven pro-Israel site hallucinated a connection between her and Hamas:
https://coreyrobin.com/2025/03/15/mccarthyism-at-yale-then-and-now/
These institutions – and others, like the LA Children's Hospital, which halted gender-affirming care for trans kids – aren't merely "complying in advance." They are betraying their mission in order to save their bacon:
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-02-04/childrens-hospital-to-stop-initiating-hormonal-therapy-for-trans-patients-under-19
This will come back to bite them in the ass. This is like firefighters doing a bit of arson on the side to make ends meet, and thinking that the townsfolk will continue to vote to maintain their budget.
I get it: it's damned easy to convince yourself that you need to destroy the village to save it. By "living to fight another day," you will get more chances to serve the public. Rationalization is a hell of a drug:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/microincentives-and-enshittification/
Trump and his fascist movement wont't let up on their assault against institutions that support free inquiry, care, justice and openness. Rolling over for them now will not keep you safe tomorrow. But with every betrayal, these institutions alienate more and more of the public, without whose support they are ultimately doomed. Supporters will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no supporters.
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

Pile 01
Hey! I hope you're okay. You know, I miss you very much. If only I could back to that day or that version of myself, I would do better but it's too late but not that much. It's like, umm... to boost myself better kind of thought I really miss our moments together, messing with each other and crying like we're in some sort of a movie. This time it's different, it's like I've been consumed to responsibilities and nothing excites me that much. I wanna go back but I can't still, I'm glad I am at a better place financially speaking, spiritually, I don't know I'm not sure but moving this heavy message aside. I hope you're having fun right now make sure that the path you chose is different. I gotta go now, I have a lot of work to do see you again, sometime ❤
🔴 In summary, this one page of my notebook is not enough to say everything she wants to say, If I let her continue I'm afraid it will a whole chapter of a novel lol
🔴 A farm or barn may be significant
🔴 The part where she said different, screams something to me... don't be someone you're not because others their best for you, know when to take it and leave it (e.g in college course)
🔴 I imagined a girl with a long hair, oversized shirt in the rain, laughing her pain to let it go
🔴 She's talkative, my hand hurts writing this hahaha
🔴 You're an extrovert who may be mistaken as an introvert (Oops, I mean you're an introvert and people see you as an extrovert when you're alone, look how I write it wrong here too🤣)
🔴 Majority here seems to be teenagers like me xD
Pile 02
(Trigger warning: mention of sui!c1d3)
Live your life, I'm grateful that I did not t@ke my life (do you have su1cid@l thoughts pile 2?). Bro it's so peaceful to be here, I thought taking my you know will end it but I was wrong, something came to me that stopped me, it was an angel. She was warm and nice (tall too around 5'8, white pale skin color). I think I can't imagine myself to be here if not for her. Now I'm working a normal job with a normal life, enough for me to decide what I want. Ya get what I'm saying? I wasn't planning to have kids, but look! I have one (three or two for some of you). Life's so short and times so fast so keep doing you lad 😉
Peace out! Oh before that, I just want to tell you to don't force anything okay? It'll come, THAT thing so yeah, let's talk again some time 😉
🔴 I feel like majority that picked this pile are dudes (straight but, again take it how it resonates if you're a member of LGBTQ)
🔴 Chill people
🔴 THAT thing may mean a number of things, depending on you it can be your dream, or really THAT sezzz, etc.
🔴 The angel maybe a literal angel, someone you know (e.g friends, family, etc.) or you're future spouse
🔴 I imagined someone with a curly hair light brown and has beared, he's thin but tall, white skin as well
🔴 He's wearing a jacket, white tee, and long pants (pale dark blue)
🔴 You're maybe in you're twenties or turning 30
🔴 Moon in Gemini at 4th House
🔴 For some of you, I'm feeling that your future spouse (especially if they're a girl) have the vibes of the tracks below.
Pile 03
I can't believe I'm already here, I'm so successful! I've got the benz and my Renz (man, dream guy/the one, whatever you call it). You've got the boss energy, trust me the people who helped you. I feel like the richest on the earth hhahah
Keep on going mama, the universe got us! Loyalty! Love yourself and other people and it will get back to you. It may not be exactly as the way you want it but, I promise you and I'm sure it going to be better, the best. You'll get it poppin! Ya know what I'm sayin?😘
🔴 Don't be consumed by fame, be yourself positively.
🔴 Some people here have the "Who you?" tendency in a negative way, please don't be like that. (Who you means treating the people you know as strangers because you have the bag and everything you dreamed of)
🔴 Remember being a bish to others will give you shi* to yourself, and your loved ones, your child may be the one who'll suffer if you don't change it
🔴 Funny people are reading this pile
🔴 Harry styles, love and disco songs maybe you're favorite/topic of your songs
🔴 Influencer, artists, rappers, people of color, rags to riches, attitude
🔴 Neptune in Capricorn at the First House

October 20, 2021 -
On the same day that Tae shares that Jungkook always sings “To Find You” to / for him, Tae goes live for a second time, this time in the evening. Right when the camera turns on, we can see he’s speaking to someone out of frame, saying he (Tae) should do a Weverse live.

Timestamp 0:00
He adjusts the camera, and then asks whoever is off camera if they’d like to join.

The person off camera giggles and lightly declines.

Timestamp :05
Tae asks why with a smile -

And then, still smiling, looks directly at the camera. He then proceeds with his live.

Taekookers commented that the giggle sounded like Jungkook’s, and even some non-Taekookers thought so too. I’ve noted the timestamp and left snippets below for you to listen and decide.

https://x.com/wayjks/status/1715298309147869556?s=46&t=StSwHjW0_Domk_lHUFMaCg
Some speculated it could be Peter or Bogum out of frame, but we know it can’t be Peter because Tae mentions that he met Peter prior and Peter was going to stop by his hotel. Tae had his jacket on because he was on his way to meet him for dinner. I also don’t think it’s Bogum because I’d think he’d be at dinner too, since he’s also a Celine Boy.

I also want to note Jungkook arrived back in Seoul on October 20, a few hours before this live took place -

draco callisthenes mormodemos, vinte e nove anos
⸺ i s t p.
𝒾 𝓃 𝓈 𝓅 ℴ. characters.craig tucker (south park). rue bennet (euphoria). ash lynx (banana fish). phillip gallhagher (shameless). shego (kim impossible). reid (serpent & dove ). nástenka (noites brancas). music. in all my dreams i drown (the devil's carnival). dark is the night (tёмная ночь, lit. dark night).

Caged Nightingale | Chronicles of Narnia | Chapter 02 - Read on FFN or AO3
Authored by: Rhuben
Rated: T
FULL SUMMARY: [REWRITE] Readjusting to his “old life”, Edmund finds himself drawn back into a Narnia he doesn’t recognize. A Narnia filled with ruin and loss. Much like himself. Feeling like he betrayed his beloved lands for a second time, and haunted by memories of the White Witch, Edmund will do everything he can to extinguish his lingering doubts of his royal title.
Witnessing the effects of war on her father, Issi has dreamt of a life of healing. Following the honeyed voice only she hears - the spirit that leads her straight into becoming a Telmarine prisoner of war – Issi promises to nurture Narnia (whatever that was) the best way she knew how, but found herself rebuilding a King desperate for some sanctuary, all the while fighting off the growing urge to do him and his family harm.
-
Excerpt:
Peter had been the first to stop talking about it. He had more important things to worry about, as he had reminded them. Being in touch with their mom. Learning what he could from the professor. If they were to get back to Narnia, he would say, then it would happen when it happened. Still, Edmund could see his frustration in the way he rolled back his shoulders when he was spoken to by teachers, held deep in his eyes when people tried to withhold information from him. Could hear it in the way he wondered why Edmund and Lucy couldn't just "do what they were told" without complaining. Susan had soon followed Peter's example. She was more patient with Edmund and Lucy, and how often she found them in the room with the wardrobe. And how often she would usher them out. She grew out of the more childish games Lucy wanted to play. Quickly, yet gently, stopped discussions on what they "would be doing in Narnia right now" as they had already lived a full live there, and didn't need to dwell on it anymore. After a while, Lucy knew not to bring it up. Yet, Edmund could still find her on occasion, just sitting in the room with the wardrobe, looking up at the big heavy door. Watching. Waiting. Hoping. Would smile a secret smile as a memory came to her. How patient she was with everyone that deemed her to be a little girl with her head up in the clouds. She had never lost faith. It was almost annoying. They were told they wouldn't be away home for long. They were told they would be able to return to Narnia. He had been told he could be made a king, and all he had to do was bring his brother and sisters to Jadis. It had been a year.

ABOUT:
Hi! I'm James (they/them) and I've recently gotten into podfics! Technically this is my second foray into the hobby (my first being a brief hypefixation in 2018), but I have a lot more interest (and patience) now! I'm looking forward to making more podfics and hopefully meeting some folks in the podfic community. Find me on AO3 here!

peter's cheeks feel frozen over and his lungs burn from the cold air, but it's okay because ned ordered him a hot chocolate, it's okay because he's got gloves on and ned's hand over his own, it's okay because they've got piles and piles of blankets back at home. it's okay because they've got their bed back home. Length: 0:01:45 Recorded: 2024
Disgustingly Rich Brownies for Disgustingly Rich Thieves by Meatball42 [Leverage, G, Eliot & Team]

Cinnamon and Smoke [HP, T, Remus/Sirius]
Mankind has made many great contributions to society and the world: the wheel, modern medicine, and public education. The best, at least as far as Remus Lupin is concerned, are cinnamon chewing gum, cigarettes, and leather. His obsession and subsequent mental declaration that they were the pinnacle of human creativity revolve around one Sirius Black. Length: 0:05:22 Recorded: 2018

As the planet gets hotter, more people use air conditioners to keep cool. Running these takes lots of energy, which means emissions that then further speed up global warming. Rethinking our architecture and using more efficient cooling technologies could help us break this vicious circle.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Deposition of the Precious Robe of the Theotokos in Blachernae
Reading from the Synaxarion:
During the reign of Leo the Great (457-474) two patricians and brethren on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land lodged with an old widow, a Christian of Jewish descent. Seeing the many miracles wrought at a small shrine in her house, they pressed her until she revealed to them that she had raiment of the most holy Theotokos kept in a small coffer. Our Lady had had two virgins in her lifetime who attended upon her; before her holy dormition, she gave each of them one of her divine garments as a blessing. This old widow was of the family of one of those two virgins, and it had come through the generations into her hands. With the permission of God, that this holy relic might be had for the profit of many, the two men took the garment by stealth and brought it to Blachernae near Constantinople, and building a church in honor of the Apostles Peter and Mark, they secretly enshrined the garment therein. But here again, because of the multitude of miracles that were worked, it became known to t he Emperor Leo, and a magnificent church was built, as some say, by that same Leo, but according to others, by his predecessors Marcian and Pulcheria, and enlarged by Leo when the holy raiment was found. The Emperor Justin the Younger completed the church, which the Emperor Romanus IV Diogenes raised up immediately again after it had burned in 1070. It burned again in 1434, and from that time it remained a small house of prayer together with the renowned holy spring. After the seventh century, the name Blachernae was given to other churches and monasteries by their pious founders out of reverence for this famous church in Constantinople. In this church John Catacuzene was crowned in 1345; also, the Council against Acindynus, the follower of Barlaam, was convoked here (see the Second Sunday of the Great Fast).
Apolytikion of Robe of the Theotokos in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone
O Ever-Virgin Theotokos, shelter of mankind, thou hast bestowed upon thy people a mighty investure, even thine immaculate body's raiment and sash, which by thy seedless childbirth have remained incorrupt; for in thee nature and time are made new. Wherefore, we implore thee to grant peace to the world, and great mercy to our souls.
Kontakion of Robe of the Theotokos in the Fourth Tone
O godly shelter that dost cover all mankind, the sacred robe that covered thy sacred body hast thou bestowed on all the faithful graciously, O pure Virgin, as a robe of divine incorruption. As we celebrate with love its august deposition, we cry to thee with fear, O graced of God: Rejoice, O modest one, boast of the Christian race.

Juvenal the Protomartyr of America & Alaska
Reading from the Synaxarion:
Saint Juvenal was (together with Saint Herman; see Dec. 12) a member of the first mission sent from Russia to proclaim the Gospel in the New World. He was a priest-monk, and a zealous follower of the Apostles, and baptized hundreds of the natives of Alaska. He was martyred by enraged pagans in 1796.
Apolytikion of Juvenal the Protomartyr of America in the Fourth Tone
Striving to free men from the darkness of idols, thou didst break forth bright as the sun as a Martyr when thou wast slaughtered for professing Christ, O Juvenal. Wherefore, as thou lookest down like a star out of Heaven, shine on us with beams of joy, for thick gloom doth surround us, thou who art splendid with the light of Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, Whom thou didst preach to all.
Kontakion of Juvenal the Protomartyr of America in the Fourth Tone
As the first to grace our land, O sacred Martyr, with confession unto death, keep us who honour thee with hymns in the confession of Jesus Christ, O righteous Father, most ven'rable Juvenal.

John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco
Reading from the Synaxarion:
The Holy Hierarch John Maximovitch was born in the Kharkov region in 1896, and reposed in Seattle in 1966. In 1921, during the Russian Civil War, his family fled to Belgrade, joining the ranks of Russian exiles in Serbia, where he later became a monk and was ordained priest. In 1934 he was made Bishop of Shanghai, where he served until the Communists came to power. Thereafter he ministered in Europe, serving as Bishop first in Paris then in Brussels, until he became Archbishop of San Francisco in 1962. Throughout his life he was revered as a strict ascetic, a devoted man of prayer, and a truly wondrous unmercenary healer of all manner of afflictions and woes. He served the Divine Liturgy daily, slept little more than an hour a day, and kept a strict fast until the evening. It is doubtful that any one man gave so much protection and comfort as he to the Russian Orthodox people in exile after the Revolution of 1917; he was an unwearying and watchful shepherd of his sheep in China, t he Philippines, Europe, and America. Through his missionary labors he also brought into the Church many who had not been "of this fold." Since his repose in 1966, he has been especially glorified by God through signs and miracles, and his body has remained incorrupt.
Apolytikion of John Maximovitch in the Plagal of the First Tone
Like a spiritual daystar in heaven's firmament, * thou didst encompass the whole world and didst enlighten men's souls. * Hence, thy name is glorified throughout the East and West, * for thou didst shine forth with the grace * of the Sun of Righteousness, O John, our beloved shepherd. * Wherefore, cease not to entreat Christ, that He show mercy and redeem our souls.
Kontakion of John Maximovitch in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone
To thee, the pastor and protector of a countless host * of homeless orphans, widows, paupers, and afflicted souls, * do we offer anthems born of love and thanksgiving. * As a hierarch filled with grace and zeal for piety, * do thou save us from the foes of apostolic truth, * for we cry to thee: * Rejoice, O great wonderworker John.

Prayer Before Reading Scripture
Shine within our hearts, loving Master, the pure light of Your divine knowledge and open the eyes of our minds that we may comprehend the message of Your Gospel. Instill in us also reverence for Your blessed commandments, so that having conquered all sinful desires, we may pursue a spiritual life, thinking and doing all those things that are pleasing to You. For You, Christ our God, are the light of our souls and bodies, and to You we give glory together with Your Father who is without beginning and Your all holy, good, and life giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Epistle Reading
The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:1-7
BRETHREN, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.
Gospel Reading
The Reading is from the Gospel According to Luke 1:39-49, 56
In those days, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, and she entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."
And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name." And Mary remained with her about three months, and return ed to her home.

SubRip Subtitle text for Leverage: Redemption 3x3 - "The Scared Stiff Job"
00:00:00,167 --> 00:00:02,086 [rhythmic beeping]
00:00:07,007 --> 00:00:08,592 [cries]
00:00:09,385 --> 00:00:12,096 I'm going to miss you so much, Dad.
00:00:13,097 --> 00:00:16,851 [cries] But your grandson will carry on your name.
00:00:17,393 --> 00:00:18,728 I promise.
00:00:18,811 --> 00:00:20,813 [beeping continues]
00:00:21,897 --> 00:00:23,858 [sniffles, cries]
00:00:26,110 --> 00:00:28,154 [grunting]
00:00:28,237 --> 00:00:29,238 [sighs]
00:00:29,780 --> 00:00:32,283 -[steady beep] -[crying]
00:00:40,124 --> 00:00:42,084 -[person] Sorry. Excuse me. Pardon me. -[daughter] Wait.
00:00:42,168 --> 00:00:44,503 -[relative] Who are these people? -We're not done saying goodbye.
00:00:44,587 --> 00:00:46,130 Hi. Pete Luna. Gift of Time.
00:00:46,213 --> 00:00:48,591 So sorry, sweetheart. Gotta move fast with these things.
00:00:48,674 --> 00:00:50,009 -Gisele? -What things?
00:00:50,092 --> 00:00:51,927 -Prepare to move the client. -Your dad didn't tell you?
00:00:52,011 --> 00:00:54,513 Tell me what? Stop! That's my father!
00:00:54,597 --> 00:00:57,099 And if you ever loved him, you don't want to do that.
00:00:57,183 --> 00:01:00,269 None of this works if we don't get the body cooled down ASAP.
00:01:00,352 --> 00:01:01,687 None of what works?
00:01:01,771 --> 00:01:03,481 -Cryonics. -[employee 1] Let's get this ice moving.
00:01:03,564 --> 00:01:05,065 -You know, like Ted Williams? -What?
00:01:05,149 --> 00:01:07,234 A lot of people think Disney did it. That's an urban legend.
00:01:07,318 --> 00:01:09,570 -You're not freezing my father. -No. We call it vitrification.
00:01:09,653 --> 00:01:11,113 I don't care what you call it.
00:01:11,197 --> 00:01:13,699 We are his family, and we decide what happens to his body.
00:01:13,783 --> 00:01:15,326 -Yeah. No. -[employee 2] Ready for prep.
00:01:15,409 --> 00:01:17,661 See, your, uh, dad, he signed a contract.
00:01:17,745 --> 00:01:19,830 -Wait. [cries] -[Peter] Here, this one is your copy.
00:01:19,914 --> 00:01:21,248 Excuse me. Um.
00:01:21,791 --> 00:01:23,334 Yeah, feel free to bring that to your attorney,
00:01:23,417 --> 00:01:25,795 but I assure you all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed.
00:01:25,878 --> 00:01:27,046 But don't worry.
00:01:27,588 --> 00:01:29,381 Your father's body will be safe with us.
00:01:29,924 --> 00:01:31,801 -[inhales deeply] -So long as you pay the storage fees.
00:01:32,384 --> 00:01:33,928 Storage fees?
00:01:36,680 --> 00:01:37,681 [sighs]
00:01:59,537 --> 00:02:00,830 [Sophie] Storage fees?
00:02:00,913 --> 00:02:03,707 What Luna didn't tell us that day was that, at the seven year mark,
00:02:03,791 --> 00:02:05,292 those fees would balloon.
00:02:05,835 --> 00:02:07,378 There's a "trigger" in the contract,
00:02:07,461 --> 00:02:09,713 which I'm sure my father signed under duress.
00:02:09,797 --> 00:02:11,924 You don't think he signed on his own free will?
00:02:12,007 --> 00:02:15,678 I never once heard my father mention anything about cryonics.
00:02:16,178 --> 00:02:17,304 You think he was manipulated?
00:02:17,388 --> 00:02:20,015 -Hey, Mom! -You rascal. Get over here. [chuckles]
00:02:21,141 --> 00:02:22,601 I didn't know it at the time,
00:02:23,102 --> 00:02:25,187 but the day I told my dad I was pregnant
00:02:25,271 --> 00:02:28,649 was the very same day he got his terminal cancer diagnosis.
00:02:28,732 --> 00:02:31,360 It was also the same day he signed that evil contract.
00:02:31,443 --> 00:02:32,444 [Sophie] Huh.
00:02:32,528 --> 00:02:36,073 Peter Luna preyed on your father in his darkest hour.
00:02:36,156 --> 00:02:39,159 My dad was not some narcissist who wanted to live forever.
00:02:41,370 --> 00:02:42,913 -No. -[scoffs]
00:02:42,997 --> 00:02:46,542 He just… he wanted to believe that he could meet his grandchild.
00:02:46,625 --> 00:02:49,628 And now, his body storage fees are bankrupting us.
00:02:50,796 --> 00:02:52,965 My mom and dad started this nursery from scratch
00:02:53,048 --> 00:02:54,758 after they emigrated from Madagascar.
00:02:54,842 --> 00:02:56,302 It's the family business.
00:02:56,385 --> 00:02:58,679 By the end of the month, it'll belong to Peter Luna.
00:02:58,762 --> 00:03:00,556 Not the outcome your father would have wanted.
00:03:01,098 --> 00:03:02,266 It's the opposite.
00:03:02,766 --> 00:03:04,727 Family was everything to my dad.
00:03:05,436 --> 00:03:06,770 Let me tell you something.
00:03:06,854 --> 00:03:08,105 You see that banana tree?
00:03:08,689 --> 00:03:13,152 In Madagascar, there's an old folktale my dad used to tell us all the time.
00:03:13,235 --> 00:03:17,489 When God created the first man and woman, he gave them a choice in how they died.
00:03:17,573 --> 00:03:20,576 They could either die like the moon, or like the banana tree.
00:03:20,659 --> 00:03:23,037 The moon dies every month and is resurrected
00:03:23,120 --> 00:03:24,622 in a cycle that repeats forever.
00:03:25,289 --> 00:03:28,584 The banana tree dies only once and is gone forever.
00:03:28,667 --> 00:03:32,087 But before it dies it sends out little green shoots
00:03:32,171 --> 00:03:33,881 that become new banana trees.
00:03:36,008 --> 00:03:37,968 And here's your little green shoot.
00:03:38,052 --> 00:03:39,303 Exactly. [sniffles]
00:03:41,055 --> 00:03:42,389 Can you help us?
00:03:47,728 --> 00:03:49,146 Peter Luna.
00:03:49,647 --> 00:03:50,731 He seems nice.
00:03:51,231 --> 00:03:53,108 He trawls oncology wards,
00:03:53,192 --> 00:03:57,112 looking for patients who have just been given a terminal diagnosis.
00:03:57,196 --> 00:04:02,117 He convinces them that they're gonna be resurrected in the very near future
00:04:02,201 --> 00:04:05,245 when medical technology is advanced enough to save them.
00:04:05,329 --> 00:04:07,831 Despite the fact that no one's ever been revived
00:04:07,915 --> 00:04:11,585 and the technology doesn't work, he gets them to sign on the dotted line.
00:04:11,669 --> 00:04:17,466 And after they die, he slowly bankrupts the family until he owns it all.
00:04:17,967 --> 00:04:18,968 Including the body.
00:04:19,051 --> 00:04:20,552 Why does he keep all the bodies?
00:04:20,636 --> 00:04:23,097 Mmm. That's a question with no good answer.
00:04:23,180 --> 00:04:25,057 Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news,
00:04:25,140 --> 00:04:27,184 but I have reviewed the contract, and it is solid.
00:04:27,267 --> 00:04:28,852 What he's doing is all perfectly legal.
00:04:28,936 --> 00:04:29,979 Of course it is.
00:04:30,062 --> 00:04:33,899 Because the US isn't so much a country as it is a giant Ponzi scheme.
00:04:33,983 --> 00:04:36,944 Now, people have a right to decide what to do with their body after they die.
00:04:37,027 --> 00:04:39,363 What if I said I wanted to be taxidermied like…
00:04:40,364 --> 00:04:41,699 that, and installed right about there?
00:04:41,782 --> 00:04:44,702 I would respect your choice. Probably never come back here again.
00:04:44,785 --> 00:04:45,995 Oh, FYI.
00:04:46,078 --> 00:04:47,705 You can do whatever you want with my meat sack.
00:04:47,788 --> 00:04:50,749 Hardison and I won't be needing ours anymore once we get our robot bodies,
00:04:50,833 --> 00:04:51,834 thank you very much.
00:04:51,917 --> 00:04:53,669 -[both] Meat sack? -Mmm.
00:04:55,462 --> 00:04:56,630 Eliot?
00:04:56,714 --> 00:05:00,467 Oh, he wants to be torn apart and eaten by a pack of wolves,
00:05:00,551 --> 00:05:03,721 so he can be a part of the pack forever, for every generation to come.
00:05:03,804 --> 00:05:05,347 How do you know that?
00:05:06,473 --> 00:05:07,599 I never said that out loud.
00:05:09,893 --> 00:05:11,437 I was just gonna go with cremated,
00:05:11,520 --> 00:05:13,355 but the wolf thing sounds… That sounds cool.
00:05:13,439 --> 00:05:14,940 What about you, Sophie?
00:05:15,524 --> 00:05:17,443 I just want to be buried beside Nate.
00:05:18,318 --> 00:05:20,279 I didn't expect this job to affect me so much…
00:05:20,362 --> 00:05:23,866 'Cause, Parker, yeah, our bodies are just vessels.
00:05:24,575 --> 00:05:26,952 But they're vessels that we love.
00:05:27,036 --> 00:05:29,663 That we live with.
00:05:30,414 --> 00:05:33,959 If… If anyone were to steal Nate's body, I…
00:05:35,002 --> 00:05:36,211 [chuckles]
00:05:38,839 --> 00:05:40,883 Laying our loved ones to rest,
00:05:40,966 --> 00:05:45,012 in whatever way feels right, it gives us rest too.
00:05:45,679 --> 00:05:46,972 I'm sorry, I--
00:05:47,056 --> 00:05:49,141 Don't apologize. You're right.
00:05:50,517 --> 00:05:51,769 Let's give this guy hell.
00:05:53,645 --> 00:05:55,898 [gasps] We should Christmas carol him.
00:05:56,648 --> 00:05:58,442 We're not doing the Christmas carol thing.
00:05:58,525 --> 00:05:59,902 You know how many times Hardison tried that.
00:05:59,985 --> 00:06:01,195 There's too many moving parts.
00:06:01,278 --> 00:06:03,655 Okay. So Hardison couldn't.
00:06:03,739 --> 00:06:08,368 No. It's too soon to be pitching cons. We need to investigate this guy further.
00:06:09,578 --> 00:06:10,996 Oh, yeah.
00:06:12,915 --> 00:06:14,374 [Breanna] I got into the security cameras.
00:06:14,458 --> 00:06:16,585 There are five other businesses besides Peter Luna's.
00:06:16,668 --> 00:06:19,004 I can't believe such a normal looking building
00:06:19,088 --> 00:06:21,632 is housing an army of sub-zero undead.
00:06:21,715 --> 00:06:25,803 Yeah. Well, most military cryonics research facilities are all the same.
00:06:25,886 --> 00:06:27,721 The normal buildings are upstairs.
00:06:27,805 --> 00:06:29,556 Labs, they're in the basement.
00:06:29,640 --> 00:06:31,892 Just in case something goes wrong, they can lock it down.
00:06:32,392 --> 00:06:34,728 Wait, are you telling me you've fought zombies?
00:06:34,812 --> 00:06:36,230 Oh. Yeah.
00:06:36,939 --> 00:06:40,150 All right. Breanna tracked flowers going to Peter Luna's office.
00:06:41,819 --> 00:06:43,904 -That's our ticket. [grunts] -[sighs]
00:06:43,987 --> 00:06:45,989 -[Parker gasps] -We didn't rehearse a slap.
00:06:46,073 --> 00:06:48,325 You think it's funny? Humiliating me like that?
00:06:48,408 --> 00:06:50,285 Babe. Babe. I-I-I didn't even notice it, okay?
00:06:50,369 --> 00:06:51,912 I-I don't know what I'm doing. I'm an idiot.
00:06:51,995 --> 00:06:53,872 Course you didn't. 'Cause you only think of yourself.
00:06:53,956 --> 00:06:55,290 Oh, right on time, my flowers.
00:06:55,374 --> 00:06:57,376 -Thank you. No, no. I need these. -Ah, ah. I need ID.
00:06:57,459 --> 00:06:58,710 I need these.
00:06:59,962 --> 00:07:01,713 I left it in the van. Listen to me, okay?
00:07:01,797 --> 00:07:04,716 I posted a picture of my wife yesterday and put it on the Internet
00:07:04,800 --> 00:07:07,010 and she said her hair was messed up. Okay? It looked fine to me.
00:07:07,094 --> 00:07:09,388 She said something about flyaways. I don't know what those are.
00:07:09,471 --> 00:07:12,975 You are the only thing standing in the way of me making up with my wife
00:07:13,809 --> 00:07:15,144 and me sleeping on the couch for a week.
00:07:15,227 --> 00:07:16,937 So have a heart.
00:07:18,856 --> 00:07:20,524 [sighs] Thank you. Thank you.
00:07:23,443 --> 00:07:25,487 Ma'am. Ma'am.
00:07:25,571 --> 00:07:26,905 You need to check in.
00:07:28,115 --> 00:07:29,116 Ma'am.
00:07:29,199 --> 00:07:31,034 Oh, wow.
00:07:31,118 --> 00:07:32,786 That is a gorgeous chair.
00:07:33,287 --> 00:07:35,581 Titanium, huh? Probably light as a feather.
00:07:36,248 --> 00:07:38,959 And you got the top-of-the-line power assist unit.
00:07:39,042 --> 00:07:41,253 -You know wheelchairs? -Well, I'm a veteran.
00:07:41,336 --> 00:07:42,838 So I got a lot of friends in chairs,
00:07:42,921 --> 00:07:46,550 but their chairs are not as pretty as yours, I'll tell you that.
00:07:46,633 --> 00:07:50,679 Then again, my friends are not as pretty as you.
00:07:50,762 --> 00:07:53,140 Well, that's an awfully sweet thing of you to say.
00:07:53,223 --> 00:07:54,766 Just because somebody says something sweet,
00:07:54,850 --> 00:07:57,186 doesn't mean it's not true, Ivy.
00:07:57,853 --> 00:07:59,229 How are you with electronics?
00:07:59,771 --> 00:08:00,898 I'm all right.
00:08:00,981 --> 00:08:02,482 Maybe after I get these flowers dropped off,
00:08:02,566 --> 00:08:04,026 you could help me with my phone?
00:08:04,109 --> 00:08:05,319 What's wrong with your phone?
00:08:06,612 --> 00:08:08,071 Well, your number's not in there.
00:08:12,701 --> 00:08:14,912 -[gasps] Well, hello there. -Hello.
00:08:14,995 --> 00:08:17,331 Hi. Um, for Bobbi.
00:08:17,414 --> 00:08:18,665 -That's me. -Oh. [chuckles]
00:08:18,749 --> 00:08:20,459 Well, flowers for Bobbi.
00:08:20,542 --> 00:08:22,753 Oh, I ordered them, but I'm not the recipient.
00:08:22,836 --> 00:08:24,213 [Peter] Bobbi, get in here!
00:08:25,339 --> 00:08:26,673 Would you excuse me, please?
00:08:30,969 --> 00:08:32,971 Somebody got you flowers?
00:08:33,555 --> 00:08:34,556 I got them for you.
00:08:35,140 --> 00:08:36,516 Well, Danielle.
00:08:37,017 --> 00:08:38,852 Isn't today the anniversary?
00:08:39,770 --> 00:08:42,147 [Peter] Oh. Right. Yeah. Cool.
00:08:42,231 --> 00:08:46,318 -Who is Danielle? -Mmm.
00:08:46,401 --> 00:08:47,778 When's my next ice bath treatment?
00:08:47,861 --> 00:08:49,363 [gasps] Oh, shoot.
00:08:50,030 --> 00:08:51,365 Oh, I forgot to schedule it.
00:08:54,785 --> 00:08:55,869 [inhales deeply]
00:08:57,162 --> 00:09:02,125 I assume this means you also forgot to refill my HGH prescription?
00:09:02,209 --> 00:09:04,544 -[gasps] Ugh. -Mm-hmm.
00:09:04,628 --> 00:09:06,630 [Bobbi] Oh, I'm so sorry. I'll fix it.
00:09:06,713 --> 00:09:09,675 Afraid of aging/dying.
00:09:09,758 --> 00:09:10,759 [Sophie] Mm-hmm.
00:09:10,842 --> 00:09:13,136 Can I make it up to you with some lunch?
00:09:13,220 --> 00:09:14,513 Someplace nice, my treat?
00:09:14,596 --> 00:09:16,556 No can do. Got an appointment.
00:09:17,349 --> 00:09:18,517 Oh.
00:09:18,600 --> 00:09:20,394 I didn't see anything on your schedule.
00:09:20,477 --> 00:09:22,521 No, it's not business, it's personal.
00:09:23,605 --> 00:09:24,648 Who is he?
00:09:25,440 --> 00:09:27,276 Or who is she?
00:09:29,695 --> 00:09:30,696 Okay.
00:09:32,281 --> 00:09:33,532 -Bobbi. -Hmm?
00:09:36,743 --> 00:09:37,661 [gasps]
00:09:45,210 --> 00:09:46,253 Thank you.
00:09:47,087 --> 00:09:50,132 Miss Unrequited-Crush-On-My-Boss may just be our way in.
00:09:50,215 --> 00:09:54,511 Hey, Parker, see if there's access through the neighboring office.
00:09:57,848 --> 00:09:59,558 Hi, Garrett.
00:09:59,641 --> 00:10:01,101 [chuckles] I'm here for the interview.
00:10:01,184 --> 00:10:03,103 Interview? With who?
00:10:03,770 --> 00:10:05,647 D'oh. Idiot. I forgot the name.
00:10:05,731 --> 00:10:08,108 -Lydia? -Yes. Lydia.
00:10:09,359 --> 00:10:10,569 Morning, Gail.
00:10:12,571 --> 00:10:13,864 What's up? [pants]
00:10:19,870 --> 00:10:21,955 Psst. Do you wanna hear something spooky?
00:10:22,039 --> 00:10:23,040 Always.
00:10:24,583 --> 00:10:26,626 They're keeping frozen bodies in the basement.
00:10:26,710 --> 00:10:28,253 -What? -Yeah.
00:10:28,754 --> 00:10:31,214 Like some kind of cryonics thing.
00:10:31,798 --> 00:10:34,051 I got lost and ended up down there.
00:10:34,551 --> 00:10:35,677 Super creepy.
00:10:35,761 --> 00:10:38,555 Like, Frankenstein's lab or something.
00:10:38,638 --> 00:10:39,765 [pants]
00:10:40,515 --> 00:10:42,976 I, uh, gotta use the restroom.
00:10:43,060 --> 00:10:47,356 So, uh, if Lydia comes out before I get back, will you just tell her?
00:10:47,439 --> 00:10:48,774 Course. [sighs]
00:10:55,781 --> 00:10:57,908 [client] Come on, man. Don't jerk me around. I need those parts.
00:10:57,991 --> 00:11:00,369 [Peter] You'll have them, Tom. I told you, I've have three clients
00:11:00,452 --> 00:11:01,787 who are going to default in two weeks.
00:11:01,870 --> 00:11:04,039 -And what if they don't? -I'll make sure that they do.
00:11:04,623 --> 00:11:05,665 Good.
00:11:05,749 --> 00:11:09,252 'Cause I got a retired CEO that wants to take up tennis again and needs tendons.
00:11:09,336 --> 00:11:12,464 If you don't believe me, Tom, in two weeks you're gonna be swimming in tendons.
00:11:12,547 --> 00:11:14,883 [both chuckling]
00:11:17,803 --> 00:11:20,389 [Peter] You're gonna be swimming in tendons. [chuckles]
00:11:21,765 --> 00:11:23,892 [sighs] You know it's so unfair, Tom.
00:11:23,975 --> 00:11:25,977 [sniffs, sighs]
00:11:26,061 --> 00:11:31,066 Death is such a sad and sappy, wasteful event.
00:11:31,149 --> 00:11:33,777 Now I've single-handedly monetized the entire process,
00:11:33,860 --> 00:11:37,572 from the moment my client dies, through their seven years of cold storage,
00:11:38,198 --> 00:11:39,866 till I sell their bodies for parts.
00:11:40,367 --> 00:11:44,287 And instead of nominating me for a friggin' Nobel prize,
00:11:44,371 --> 00:11:46,873 you wanna know what my clients' families do, Tom?
00:11:46,957 --> 00:11:51,628 Well, they whine and they complain about me stealing bodies that are lawfully mine.
00:11:51,711 --> 00:11:55,882 I mean, the future, Tom, is the free market.
00:11:55,966 --> 00:11:58,385 I guess we know why he refuses to return the bodies.
00:11:58,468 --> 00:11:59,970 He's running a human chop shop.
00:12:01,179 --> 00:12:02,764 Not on my bloody watch.
00:12:06,435 --> 00:12:09,980 I wanna stop this guy in his tracks, so we hit him hard and fast.
00:12:10,063 --> 00:12:12,858 I'm going to pose as a client and get him out of his office.
00:12:13,567 --> 00:12:15,610 Parker, you're going to get in and ransack it.
00:12:15,694 --> 00:12:17,821 Breanna, you're on digital assets.
00:12:17,904 --> 00:12:20,615 Crypto, bank accounts, shell companies.
00:12:21,116 --> 00:12:24,703 This creep's wearing a Patek Philippe watch and designer clothing.
00:12:24,786 --> 00:12:27,330 He's got money, and we're gonna find it.
00:12:29,708 --> 00:12:31,501 Welcome. Come in.
00:12:32,419 --> 00:12:33,670 Hi. [chuckles]
00:12:34,337 --> 00:12:35,338 Um.
00:12:35,422 --> 00:12:38,967 I am looking for, um… Peter Luna?
00:12:39,718 --> 00:12:42,095 Peter's in a meeting right now. But I can help you. I'm Bobbi.
00:12:42,179 --> 00:12:43,263 Oh. [chuckles]
00:12:43,805 --> 00:12:44,806 Oh.
00:12:45,390 --> 00:12:47,642 I don't mean to pry, but are you all right?
00:12:47,726 --> 00:12:48,977 [Sophie whimpers]
00:12:49,060 --> 00:12:53,523 I'm sorry. I, um… I don't even know… [stutters] …what I'm doing here.
00:12:53,607 --> 00:12:56,526 I know nothing about, um, cryonics.
00:12:56,610 --> 00:13:00,739 I, uh… [sighs] …I just received some very bad news.
00:13:00,822 --> 00:13:02,199 Oh, sweetheart.
00:13:02,699 --> 00:13:03,742 I'm so sorry.
00:13:03,825 --> 00:13:06,745 -[sighs] Can I get you anything? -Oh.
00:13:06,828 --> 00:13:08,872 -Coffee? Water? -[whimpers]
00:13:10,707 --> 00:13:12,292 I'll take the elixir of life if you have it.
00:13:12,375 --> 00:13:13,376 [chuckles]
00:13:13,460 --> 00:13:15,045 If we had it, I'd give it to you.
00:13:15,629 --> 00:13:17,130 But I can offer you the next best thing.
00:13:17,214 --> 00:13:19,716 Three fingers of good whiskey, that's all right.
00:13:19,799 --> 00:13:22,010 [laughs] I was talking about time.
00:13:22,511 --> 00:13:24,179 That's what cryonics is about.
00:13:24,721 --> 00:13:27,891 It's not sci-fi or make-believe, or the elixir of life.
00:13:28,558 --> 00:13:32,604 It's the process by which we take back control of the clock.
00:13:33,146 --> 00:13:34,231 We?
00:13:34,314 --> 00:13:35,357 Oh.
00:13:35,440 --> 00:13:37,859 Cryonics is not just my job, it's my passion.
00:13:37,943 --> 00:13:38,985 Are you a client as well?
00:13:39,069 --> 00:13:40,070 I'm more than that.
00:13:40,570 --> 00:13:42,489 I was the company's first investor. [chuckles]
00:13:42,572 --> 00:13:44,324 How did you get into it?
00:13:44,407 --> 00:13:45,408 [inhales sharply]
00:13:46,535 --> 00:13:50,872 Many years ago, my boss Peter… Oh, he's a genius.
00:13:50,956 --> 00:13:53,833 Well, he was married to this woman named Danielle.
00:13:54,501 --> 00:13:57,254 She was an ER nurse who was exposed to hepatitis C
00:13:57,337 --> 00:13:58,755 while she was treating a patient.
00:13:58,838 --> 00:14:00,507 [sighs] She died ten years ago.
00:14:01,007 --> 00:14:02,968 Three months before the cure was announced.
00:14:03,051 --> 00:14:04,386 [sighs]
00:14:04,469 --> 00:14:07,222 -If only she'd had a bit more time. -Yes.
00:14:07,722 --> 00:14:08,890 Yes.
00:14:08,974 --> 00:14:11,351 She could have lived a long, healthy life.
00:14:12,435 --> 00:14:14,312 When I met Peter and he told me that story…
00:14:14,396 --> 00:14:18,441 [inhales deeply] …I knew that cryonics was my mission in life.

00:24:15,746 --> 00:24:16,873 Hey.
00:24:18,749 --> 00:24:20,168 I'm still alive!
00:24:21,919 --> 00:24:23,421 [breathes heavily]
00:24:23,504 --> 00:24:25,089 You can't freeze me.
00:24:27,383 --> 00:24:28,384 Oh!
00:24:29,677 --> 00:24:33,014 Uh, you're not being vitrified. You're being revived.
00:24:33,723 --> 00:24:35,600 [Peter] Why is everything so blurry?
00:24:35,683 --> 00:24:37,435 That's just your retinas coming back online.
00:24:37,518 --> 00:24:39,187 It can take up to 48 hours.
00:24:39,270 --> 00:24:40,313 My retinas?
00:24:41,647 --> 00:24:43,274 -[scoffs] -Hey,
00:24:43,357 --> 00:24:45,943 you're that lady that came by the other day.
00:24:46,027 --> 00:24:47,612 [chuckles] The other day?
00:24:48,279 --> 00:24:49,614 Oh! [chuckles]
00:24:49,697 --> 00:24:51,240 That was 30 years ago.
00:24:51,324 --> 00:24:56,454 Well, tragically… [chuckles] …you died in a car accident that Christmas Eve.
00:24:58,247 --> 00:24:59,290 But I'm not dead.
00:24:59,373 --> 00:25:01,334 No, but you were.
00:25:01,417 --> 00:25:02,919 [sucks teeth] So was I, actually.
00:25:03,002 --> 00:25:06,547 But death can be reversed and… [inhales sharply]
00:25:06,631 --> 00:25:09,592 …they woke me six months ago when they cured cancer.
00:25:10,551 --> 00:25:13,137 [inhales sharply] Now I work as a reanimation specialist,
00:25:13,221 --> 00:25:17,266 which is just a fancy way of saying that I help others with the reentry process,
00:25:17,350 --> 00:25:18,351 such as yourself.
00:25:19,310 --> 00:25:21,854 Lady, you're high.
00:25:23,814 --> 00:25:25,942 [groans, yells]
00:25:26,567 --> 00:25:29,195 Ooh, Mr. Luna.
00:25:29,278 --> 00:25:31,405 You must try to calm down.
00:25:31,489 --> 00:25:36,702 You're putting an awful lot of pressure on a heart that hasn't beat in three decades.
00:25:36,786 --> 00:25:42,959 There have been many advancements, but cryonics only works once.
00:25:43,042 --> 00:25:45,795 If you die again, it's for keeps.
00:25:46,379 --> 00:25:48,130 Prove it. Prove that I died.
00:25:48,214 --> 00:25:49,799 [stammers] But I'm worried about your heart.
00:25:49,882 --> 00:25:51,050 Prove it!
00:25:51,842 --> 00:25:54,762 Oh, dear. Well, this will be difficult to see.
00:25:56,180 --> 00:25:58,557 [reporter] Horrific crash caught on camera.
00:25:58,641 --> 00:26:00,101 A black Dodge Charger…
00:26:00,184 --> 00:26:02,186 [sucks teeth, sighs] It was terrible.
00:26:03,104 --> 00:26:04,355 But at least you didn't suffer.
00:26:04,438 --> 00:26:06,691 How come I'm not all messed up?
00:26:06,774 --> 00:26:08,693 It was a closed head wound.
00:26:08,776 --> 00:26:12,029 Left the rest of you largely unscathed.
00:26:12,113 --> 00:26:15,324 I'm told it looked like apple sauce in there.
00:26:15,408 --> 00:26:19,120 [chuckles] Isn't science a wonder?
00:26:19,203 --> 00:26:22,081 [gasps] Anyway, here's your obituary.
00:26:27,503 --> 00:26:28,337 Fair.
00:26:28,421 --> 00:26:32,258 I'm afraid this next one may be a-a smidge distressing.
00:26:37,054 --> 00:26:39,390 It appears no one showed up for your funeral.
00:26:39,974 --> 00:26:41,100 Not even Bobbi.
00:26:41,183 --> 00:26:42,310 Bobbi?
00:26:42,935 --> 00:26:47,023 That gold digger/stage-V clinger? Yeah, I'm all broken up about it.
00:26:49,150 --> 00:26:52,695 Sorry, Father Christmas. This chimney is shut down.
00:26:53,904 --> 00:26:57,783 Yo, Eliot, I got a plastered Sinterklaas trying to go downstairs.
00:26:57,867 --> 00:27:00,578 I just shut down the elevator, but he's headed to the stairwell.
00:27:00,661 --> 00:27:02,872 There's no telling where old Père Noël is gonna go from there.
00:27:02,955 --> 00:27:05,458 I told you. There's too many moving parts for this con.
00:27:05,541 --> 00:27:07,585 There's too many moving parts in your mouth. [shushes]
00:27:08,544 --> 00:27:10,671 Hey, Merry Christmas. [chuckles]
00:27:10,755 --> 00:27:11,756 Easy, homey.
00:27:12,715 --> 00:27:14,383 -Little too-- Oh! [grunts] -[grunts]
00:27:16,093 --> 00:27:18,262 He's more of a Krampus, I guess.
00:27:20,473 --> 00:27:22,099 The Peter Luna.
00:27:22,183 --> 00:27:23,642 I can't believe it!
00:27:23,726 --> 00:27:25,519 What is it the old people say?
00:27:26,187 --> 00:27:27,355 I stan you!
00:27:27,438 --> 00:27:28,522 No cap! [laughs]
00:27:28,606 --> 00:27:29,690 You know who I am?
00:27:30,274 --> 00:27:31,859 Oh, you really have no idea.
00:27:31,942 --> 00:27:35,654 [inhales sharply] I'm so sorry. Where are my manners?
00:27:35,738 --> 00:27:36,906 Ashton Mountebank.
00:27:36,989 --> 00:27:40,242 The owner of Gift of Time, Incorporated. Well, the new owner anyway.
00:27:40,826 --> 00:27:43,579 My private equity group… Well, one of my private equity groups
00:27:43,662 --> 00:27:45,706 bought your biz out of bankruptcy last year.
00:27:45,790 --> 00:27:46,832 Funny story.
00:27:47,333 --> 00:27:50,961 I had actually forgotten that I had bid in the online auction
00:27:51,045 --> 00:27:54,590 until I received the email saying that I had won! [laughs]
00:27:55,633 --> 00:27:57,009 But I didn't go bankrupt.
00:27:57,093 --> 00:27:58,386 No, you didn't.
00:27:58,886 --> 00:27:59,887 But you did die.
00:27:59,970 --> 00:28:02,640 And everyone that came after you didn't have your genius.
00:28:02,723 --> 00:28:04,100 But you're alive now
00:28:04,183 --> 00:28:07,603 and, bro, you're gonna be so psyched to hear how things are now!
00:28:08,187 --> 00:28:09,855 Regulations have been slashed.
00:28:09,939 --> 00:28:12,024 There are no government agencies.
00:28:12,108 --> 00:28:15,861 None. Everything, and I mean everything, is for sale.
00:28:15,945 --> 00:28:18,280 I've got a snow leopard in my car right now.
00:28:18,364 --> 00:28:21,033 Taxes actually go down the more money you make.
00:28:21,117 --> 00:28:23,744 Honestly, I don't know how we got that last one through Congress.
00:28:23,828 --> 00:28:27,039 Of course I'm kidding. I do know. It was money and lots of it.
00:28:27,123 --> 00:28:28,457 [laughs]
00:28:28,541 --> 00:28:29,875 Ayo!
00:28:31,127 --> 00:28:32,378 But how are you feeling?
00:28:32,461 --> 00:28:34,797 Like I died and went to heaven?
00:28:35,923 --> 00:28:39,093 [both laughing]
00:28:39,176 --> 00:28:42,721 [chokes, coughs] Hey, pal, can you help me out with this?
00:28:42,805 --> 00:28:44,849 -Absolutely. -[clears throat]
00:28:45,433 --> 00:28:48,310 -What do you need, bro? A little tighter? -No, I need it off!
00:28:48,394 --> 00:28:49,645 Oh.
00:28:49,728 --> 00:28:50,813 No can do, bro.
00:28:51,605 --> 00:28:52,940 I own you.
00:28:53,023 --> 00:28:54,400 You-You-You can't own a person.
00:28:54,483 --> 00:28:56,527 A hundred percent-o. Owning a person would be wrong.
00:28:57,194 --> 00:28:59,530 But you're not a person. You're an "F.O.E."
00:29:00,573 --> 00:29:03,826 Okay, um, listen to me. I am not your enemy, I swear--
00:29:03,909 --> 00:29:05,578 No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:29:05,661 --> 00:29:07,371 I'm sorry. Not foe.
00:29:07,455 --> 00:29:11,584 F, dot, O, dot, E, dot.
00:29:11,667 --> 00:29:13,586 Stands for "Fully Owned Entity."
00:29:14,545 --> 00:29:16,172 "Fully Owned Entity"?
00:29:16,755 --> 00:29:20,050 Your original idea, which was brilliant,
00:29:20,801 --> 00:29:24,889 was to hedge your cryonics business with a body-brokering sideline.
00:29:24,972 --> 00:29:28,392 I have always been a little bit more interested
00:29:28,476 --> 00:29:30,811 in the future labor potential of cryonics.
00:29:30,895 --> 00:29:34,482 Basically, why sell a human being in parts
00:29:35,232 --> 00:29:37,610 when you can own the whole thing?
00:29:37,693 --> 00:29:39,278 And it's all perfectly legal.
00:29:39,361 --> 00:29:41,530 Oh, then what am I? A slave?
00:29:41,614 --> 00:29:44,116 Oh! Oh. Oh, oh. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:29:44,200 --> 00:29:46,160 Slavery's illegal. Slavery is immoral.
00:29:46,243 --> 00:29:47,745 You are an indentured servant.
00:29:48,287 --> 00:29:49,830 And when you've worked off your debt,
00:29:50,331 --> 00:29:53,334 you're free to go live your reanimated life.
00:29:53,417 --> 00:29:54,960 Well, how long is that gonna take?
00:29:55,044 --> 00:29:58,589 The basic formula is twice the amount of time spent in suspended animation,
00:29:58,672 --> 00:30:00,633 -which in your case would be 60 years. -Sixty years?
00:30:00,716 --> 00:30:04,136 But because I'm a fan, I'll knock it down to 50.
00:30:04,220 --> 00:30:05,221 Fifty years?
00:30:05,304 --> 00:30:08,599 Life expectancy is twice what it used to be, so it's more like 25.
00:30:08,682 --> 00:30:10,434 [device beeping]
00:30:10,518 --> 00:30:11,644 Hold that thought.
00:30:12,603 --> 00:30:14,813 Ah! I have to take this.
00:30:15,314 --> 00:30:17,024 It's my Supreme Court Justice.
00:30:17,107 --> 00:30:19,068 [inhales deeply] Are you double-jointed?
00:30:19,151 --> 00:30:20,319 -No. -Claustrophobic?
00:30:20,402 --> 00:30:21,403 Why?
00:30:23,531 --> 00:30:25,533 Do you have any experience mining cobalt?
00:30:25,616 --> 00:30:26,700 Cobalt?
00:30:28,202 --> 00:30:29,453 Don't worry, bro.
00:30:29,537 --> 00:30:31,622 We're gonna find you a great job.
00:30:32,122 --> 00:30:33,207 Peter Luna.
00:30:34,166 --> 00:30:36,001 [laughs] I love my life.
00:30:39,505 --> 00:30:42,466 [sighs] God… Hey, Eliot, can you broom the goths from the stairwell?
00:30:42,550 --> 00:30:43,717 They just left that party early
00:30:43,801 --> 00:30:45,427 and I don't trust that little freak Garrett.
00:30:45,511 --> 00:30:48,389 [Eliot] I'd love to, but I'm a little busy right now.
00:30:48,472 --> 00:30:49,640 Santa gave me the slip.
00:30:49,723 --> 00:30:51,350 Can't you just follow the reindeer tracks?
00:30:51,433 --> 00:30:52,726 [growls]
00:30:53,686 --> 00:30:55,729 I lifted the master key off the janitor.
00:31:01,277 --> 00:31:05,072 I can't believe there are real dead bodies just a few feet away from us.
00:31:06,115 --> 00:31:09,618 You know, I think I may have underestimated you, Gary.
00:31:10,202 --> 00:31:12,496 -It's Garrett. -I don't care.
00:31:13,622 --> 00:31:14,707 [Parker] Why?
00:31:14,790 --> 00:31:16,834 Why did I do it? Why, God? [pants]
00:31:16,917 --> 00:31:18,460 Hey, you're the interview lady.
00:31:18,544 --> 00:31:21,046 Yeah! I snuck back in to look at one of the bodies and… [gasps]
00:31:21,130 --> 00:31:22,423 Oh, God. I don't think they're…
00:31:22,506 --> 00:31:23,966 They're not dead! Not really!
00:31:24,508 --> 00:31:27,136 I opened one up and it… [stammers] …it bit me and I don't know…
00:31:27,219 --> 00:31:28,345 Help! [shrieks]
00:31:29,263 --> 00:31:30,306 [chokes]
00:31:30,389 --> 00:31:31,265 -[both gasp] -Go!
00:31:31,348 --> 00:31:33,392 Help me! [groans]
00:31:41,191 --> 00:31:42,526 Oh! [grunts]
00:31:43,152 --> 00:31:46,488 [sniffs] Hey, um, you gotta help me.
00:31:46,572 --> 00:31:48,157 Well, that's what I'm here for.
00:31:48,240 --> 00:31:50,701 Yeah. Oh… So, listen, I'm not really built for, um…
00:31:50,784 --> 00:31:52,119 [chuckles] …manual labor.
00:31:52,202 --> 00:31:54,997 Uh, I need you to help me escape. [breathes heavily]
00:31:55,080 --> 00:31:57,625 Oh. I won't do that. And we should not discuss such things.
00:31:57,708 --> 00:31:58,876 Wait a second. Hold on.
00:31:58,959 --> 00:32:00,961 But I saved your life, so I think that you owe me--
00:32:01,045 --> 00:32:02,338 Ignore that.
00:32:03,088 --> 00:32:04,256 Just the old pipes.
00:32:06,759 --> 00:32:08,344 [inhales sharply] It's futile.
00:32:08,886 --> 00:32:10,721 You and I are F.O.E.s.
00:32:10,804 --> 00:32:12,556 We don't exist outside these walls.
00:32:12,640 --> 00:32:13,682 No ID's.
00:32:13,766 --> 00:32:15,225 No documents.
00:32:15,309 --> 00:32:16,935 [glass squeaking]
00:32:19,146 --> 00:32:20,648 No bank accounts.
00:32:20,731 --> 00:32:22,566 Well… [stammers] …we can go to the police.
00:32:22,650 --> 00:32:24,735 The police? [inhales sharply]
00:32:24,818 --> 00:32:28,447 The police are an subscription service and F.O.E.s are not eligible.
00:32:29,031 --> 00:32:30,199 Hmm.
00:32:30,991 --> 00:32:32,201 [mouthing words] Sorry.
00:32:32,826 --> 00:32:37,247 The only authority that applies to us are the retrieval specialists.
00:32:37,331 --> 00:32:38,582 Bounty hunters.
00:32:39,124 --> 00:32:43,045 They prowl the district, searching for escaped F.O.E.s.
00:32:43,545 --> 00:32:45,839 The minute you break the perimeter of this building,
00:32:46,340 --> 00:32:48,217 they're legally allowed to harvest you.
00:32:48,300 --> 00:32:49,385 Harvest? [laughs]
00:32:49,468 --> 00:32:51,970 Sell you. In parts. To the highest bidder.
00:32:52,054 --> 00:32:53,847 Even if you were, let's say,
00:32:53,931 --> 00:32:57,893 to miraculously evade every retrieval specialist in the district,
00:32:57,976 --> 00:33:00,688 you'd still have to find money to hire a coyote
00:33:00,771 --> 00:33:02,815 to show you how to reach the Free Lands.
00:33:04,942 --> 00:33:08,445 What am I even saying? I shouldn't even be speaking about this.
00:33:09,071 --> 00:33:10,072 [door opens]
00:33:13,075 --> 00:33:15,494 [pants] How's it going in here?
00:33:15,577 --> 00:33:17,955 Oh, you know, just cleared three simultaneous crises
00:33:18,038 --> 00:33:19,498 without breaking a sweat, so…
00:33:21,583 --> 00:33:22,668 Hold up.
00:33:25,337 --> 00:33:27,214 [both] Oh, Bobbi.
00:33:27,297 --> 00:33:29,550 [Sophie] You gotta get some self-respect.
00:33:29,633 --> 00:33:32,136 [sighs] I'll handle her.
00:33:35,514 --> 00:33:39,268 Uh, guys, so I just… I wanted to say good job on the Santa and the goths.
00:33:39,351 --> 00:33:41,228 Just… There's one little complication.
00:33:41,812 --> 00:33:42,813 Peter's gone.
00:33:50,320 --> 00:33:51,989 [pants, chuckles]
00:33:52,781 --> 00:33:54,074 [grunts]
00:33:54,658 --> 00:33:56,201 [groans]
00:33:57,411 --> 00:33:58,579 Well, well.
00:34:00,456 --> 00:34:01,540 A lost lamb.
00:34:01,623 --> 00:34:03,041 Leave me alone!
00:34:03,625 --> 00:34:05,252 Ah, where's the fun in that?
00:34:05,335 --> 00:34:08,005 [pants, stammers] I have… I have a weapon!
00:34:08,088 --> 00:34:09,131 Ooh.
00:34:09,214 --> 00:34:10,340 I tell you what.
00:34:11,133 --> 00:34:12,342 You show me yours,
00:34:13,802 --> 00:34:15,012 I'll show you mine.
00:34:15,804 --> 00:34:19,641 You see, this knife is coated in Komodo dragon saliva,
00:34:20,142 --> 00:34:21,727 the nastiest bacteria in the world.
00:34:21,810 --> 00:34:24,855 One little nick and the poison is in your bloodstream.
00:34:24,938 --> 00:34:28,108 Then you will beg me to harvest you.
00:34:29,401 --> 00:34:31,236 Help!
00:34:31,320 --> 00:34:32,529 Help!
00:34:33,363 --> 00:34:36,366 There's no help for F.O.E.s who break perimeter.
00:34:36,450 --> 00:34:38,035 [groans]
00:34:38,577 --> 00:34:39,828 [gasps, grunts]
00:34:43,165 --> 00:34:44,500 Accompany me if you wish to survive.
00:34:47,836 --> 00:34:48,962 And stay down!
00:34:49,046 --> 00:34:52,132 This area's crawling with retrieval specialists.
00:34:53,050 --> 00:34:54,885 -Just get in the… -[stammers]
00:34:56,970 --> 00:34:58,972 -Okay. -[groaning]
00:35:00,974 --> 00:35:02,935 Is this the van of the future? [exhales deeply]
00:35:03,018 --> 00:35:04,937 No, and you're damn lucky it's not.
00:35:05,020 --> 00:35:06,355 [engine starts]
00:35:06,438 --> 00:35:07,439 Hold tight.
00:35:08,816 --> 00:35:11,151 [groaning, panting]
00:35:11,985 --> 00:35:13,278 Are you a coyote?
00:35:13,362 --> 00:35:14,738 -[whimpers] -[laughs]
00:35:14,822 --> 00:35:16,990 We prefer the term resistance fighters.
00:35:17,074 --> 00:35:18,617 -Oh! -[grunts]
00:35:18,700 --> 00:35:21,620 [chuckles] But if you're asking if I can get you out of the district,
00:35:21,703 --> 00:35:25,332 the answer is, "Do you have anything valuable enough to buy your freedom?"
00:35:25,415 --> 00:35:26,708 I have money.
00:35:26,792 --> 00:35:29,253 [chuckles] As in currency? 'Cause that's not a thing anymore.
00:35:29,336 --> 00:35:30,921 [inhales deeply] I have gold.
00:35:31,004 --> 00:35:32,339 -[tires screech] -[Peter groans]
00:35:32,422 --> 00:35:33,465 [strains]
00:35:35,425 --> 00:35:36,426 Now we're talking.
00:35:36,510 --> 00:35:37,803 [crow cawing]
00:35:37,886 --> 00:35:39,638 So you've been frozen over 30 years?
00:35:40,347 --> 00:35:41,849 That's what they told me.
00:35:41,932 --> 00:35:43,141 Damn.
00:35:43,225 --> 00:35:46,103 So you died and woke up in this late-stage capitalist hellscape.
00:35:46,728 --> 00:35:48,647 By the way, what did you say you did before you died?
00:35:48,730 --> 00:35:49,773 As a profession.
00:35:50,399 --> 00:35:53,151 Uh, I-I was in the nonprofit area.
00:35:53,235 --> 00:35:55,904 [sighs] That's so noble. I knew I liked you.
00:36:03,412 --> 00:36:04,746 [Peter grunts]
00:36:05,289 --> 00:36:06,290 [grunts]
00:36:07,040 --> 00:36:08,041 [grunts]
00:36:14,089 --> 00:36:16,216 For someone in nonprofit, that's a whole lot of profit.
00:36:16,300 --> 00:36:18,385 [pants] What can I say? I'm a saver.
00:36:18,468 --> 00:36:19,845 [inhales deeply] Okay.
00:36:19,928 --> 00:36:21,763 Well, that's a pretty good hiding place for your gold,
00:36:21,847 --> 00:36:23,265 but, uh, what about Danielle's remains?
00:36:23,348 --> 00:36:25,225 [laughs]
00:36:26,268 --> 00:36:27,561 That's the genius of it.
00:36:27,644 --> 00:36:29,354 There never was a Danielle.
00:36:30,314 --> 00:36:31,565 It's a perfect cover story.
00:36:32,065 --> 00:36:33,775 Here. Help me load this.
00:36:35,861 --> 00:36:37,029 [strains]
00:36:38,322 --> 00:36:39,823 [Breanna] Okay.
00:36:39,907 --> 00:36:42,367 That should be just enough gold to get us to the Free Lands.
00:36:42,451 --> 00:36:45,287 Speaking of which, this is very important.
00:36:45,787 --> 00:36:47,873 Should we be separated for any reason,
00:36:47,956 --> 00:36:50,334 you must follow the fires to the Free Lands.
00:36:50,417 --> 00:36:51,793 [inhales sharply] Okay?
00:36:52,586 --> 00:36:53,670 Got it.
00:36:53,754 --> 00:36:54,755 [grunts, groans]
00:36:58,383 --> 00:36:59,635 [tires squeal]
00:37:00,135 --> 00:37:01,762 [panting]
00:37:01,845 --> 00:37:03,013 The mark is in the wind.
00:37:03,096 --> 00:37:04,181 Okay.
00:37:05,724 --> 00:37:07,726 [panting]
00:37:11,647 --> 00:37:12,689 [Peter] Okay. Okay.
00:37:13,523 --> 00:37:16,151 Follow the fires to the Free Lands. Follow the fires to the Free Lands.
00:37:16,234 --> 00:37:17,527 Follow the fires to the…
00:37:17,611 --> 00:37:19,529 Aha! [laughs]
00:37:21,114 --> 00:37:22,491 Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
00:37:22,574 --> 00:37:24,076 Okay. Okay. All right.
00:37:24,159 --> 00:37:25,994 Uh, don't harvest me, bro.
00:37:26,078 --> 00:37:28,956 Uh, "Vreelands. Vreelands"?
00:37:29,456 --> 00:37:30,457 Free Lands?
00:37:31,708 --> 00:37:33,543 -[tires squeal] -[grunts, laughs]
00:37:36,755 --> 00:37:37,756 [grunts]
00:37:37,839 --> 00:37:40,050 ["Jingle Bells" playing]
00:37:41,635 --> 00:37:43,595 [breathing heavily] Did I make it out of the district?
00:37:43,679 --> 00:37:45,263 Is this the Free Lands?
00:37:47,015 --> 00:37:48,308 Yes!
00:37:48,392 --> 00:37:50,435 Yes, yes, yes! Merry…
00:37:50,936 --> 00:37:53,271 What is it? Christmas? Merry Christmas!
00:37:53,355 --> 00:37:54,481 [laughs]
00:37:54,564 --> 00:37:55,983 [sighs, pants]
00:37:57,567 --> 00:37:59,987 [laughs] This is… What… [chuckles]
00:38:00,654 --> 00:38:02,781 But I mean, didn't-didn't we cure cancer?
00:38:16,461 --> 00:38:19,006 Oh, you think you're gonna get away with this?
00:38:20,090 --> 00:38:24,261 Well, I'm going to sue you into the next millennium.
00:38:24,761 --> 00:38:25,762 Okay?
00:38:25,846 --> 00:38:27,097 I'm gonna call the cops.
00:38:27,180 --> 00:38:28,181 [doorbell dings]
00:38:28,265 --> 00:38:30,142 Holy crap! Okay, you gotta help me.
00:38:30,225 --> 00:38:32,436 I have been the victim of a crime. These people…
00:38:35,814 --> 00:38:37,482 [stammers] They were right here.
00:38:39,026 --> 00:38:41,570 Okay. Uh, so listen, listen. Okay. So what happened was this.
00:38:42,070 --> 00:38:46,324 They told me… they told me that I died and I came back, and they thawed me,
00:38:46,408 --> 00:38:48,326 and it's the future, but I figured it out!
00:38:48,410 --> 00:38:49,786 Because we still have cancer!
00:38:49,870 --> 00:38:55,167 And then this guy came with a bow… [crying] …and he had Komodo dragon saliva.
00:38:55,250 --> 00:38:56,251 Is this the guy, ma'am?
00:38:56,334 --> 00:38:58,170 [sighs] Yeah. [chuckles] Yeah, that's him.
00:38:58,253 --> 00:39:00,797 That's the guy who stole my van. I think he's unwell.
00:39:00,881 --> 00:39:02,632 That's the girl who wants my gold.
00:39:02,716 --> 00:39:03,925 I think he means this.
00:39:04,426 --> 00:39:06,011 Yeah. Found this in the back of my van.
00:39:06,720 --> 00:39:08,430 [laughing]
00:39:09,431 --> 00:39:11,224 That's a lie. She's lying.
00:39:12,392 --> 00:39:14,311 His pupils are blown. I think he's on something.
00:39:14,394 --> 00:39:16,188 Atropine or ketamine probably.
00:39:16,271 --> 00:39:18,148 [chuckles] Seventy-two-hour psych hold?
00:39:18,231 --> 00:39:19,524 Works for me.
00:39:19,608 --> 00:39:21,568 -All right, pal. Let's go. -Doesn't work for me--
00:39:21,651 --> 00:39:23,403 Ow! Ow!
00:39:23,487 --> 00:39:25,864 Oh, God! Oh, God!
00:39:25,947 --> 00:39:27,824 Oh, God! [screams]
00:39:44,007 --> 00:39:45,425 [sighs] Bobbi!
00:39:46,176 --> 00:39:47,636 [sighs] Where were you?
00:39:48,220 --> 00:39:49,513 Why didn't you bail me out?
00:39:50,555 --> 00:39:52,933 I think my days of bailing you out are over.
00:39:55,936 --> 00:39:57,521 [both] Oh, Bobbi.
00:39:57,604 --> 00:39:59,106 I'll handle her.
00:39:59,815 --> 00:40:02,609 [Sophie] It appears no one showed up for your funeral.
00:40:02,692 --> 00:40:04,486 -Not even Bobbi. -[Peter] Bobbi?
00:40:04,569 --> 00:40:08,865 That gold digger/stage-V clinger? Yeah, I'm all broken up about it.
00:40:10,534 --> 00:40:13,745 [Peter] There never was a Danielle. It's a perfect cover story.
00:40:15,205 --> 00:40:16,998 [stammers] What are you doing in my office?
00:40:17,082 --> 00:40:20,085 -Closing it. -You can't do that. It's my company.
00:40:20,168 --> 00:40:21,378 It was your company.
00:40:21,461 --> 00:40:23,088 I was your first investor, Peter. Remember?
00:40:23,171 --> 00:40:24,756 And I called my note.
00:40:24,840 --> 00:40:28,593 You know, the loan I gave you that you promised to pay back but never did?
00:40:28,677 --> 00:40:31,263 I own the company now and I've decided to sell it off in parts.
00:40:31,847 --> 00:40:33,390 Ooh! You know how that works, right?
00:40:33,473 --> 00:40:34,641 Bobbi, Bobbi, Bobbi!
00:40:34,724 --> 00:40:38,145 I'm gonna… I'm gonna pay you back, um, as soon as I find my gold.
00:40:38,228 --> 00:40:41,439 You mean the profit that you siphoned off without my knowledge or consent,
00:40:41,523 --> 00:40:44,359 then didn't pay taxes on, yet somehow I'm the gold digger?
00:40:44,442 --> 00:40:45,986 Yeah, talk to them about that.
00:40:47,154 --> 00:40:49,573 To be honest, I don't even think they might be your biggest problem.
00:40:49,656 --> 00:40:51,741 Apparently, you owe this guy some tendons.
00:40:51,825 --> 00:40:54,244 Looks like he's gonna collect those one way or another.
00:40:56,413 --> 00:40:57,664 Bobbi, please. Um…
00:40:58,790 --> 00:41:02,669 [sighs] …you know, this is bigger than you and me.
00:41:02,752 --> 00:41:04,796 The company that I built… That we built…
00:41:04,880 --> 00:41:10,051 That we built is vital… [chuckles] …to the survival of humanity.
00:41:10,135 --> 00:41:11,845 Don't talk to me about humanity.
00:41:11,928 --> 00:41:12,971 You don't have any.
00:41:13,054 --> 00:41:15,473 No moral principles, no high ideals.
00:41:15,557 --> 00:41:17,976 Everything you say and do is a lie.
00:41:18,560 --> 00:41:22,230 You see people as a bunch of parts you can extract value from.
00:41:22,314 --> 00:41:23,607 You don't cheat death.
00:41:24,191 --> 00:41:25,233 You just cheat.
00:41:26,109 --> 00:41:29,696 -[sighs] -You will die someday, Peter.
00:41:29,779 --> 00:41:32,073 And I won't be at your funeral.
00:41:35,285 --> 00:41:38,538 Ben Kassim Akondro was a wonderful man.
00:41:39,039 --> 00:41:42,709 A devoted husband, an amazing dad
00:41:42,792 --> 00:41:45,212 and would have been the world's best grandpa.
00:41:46,046 --> 00:41:48,673 But he lived and died like the banana tree.
00:41:49,174 --> 00:41:50,634 So as the family he created,
00:41:50,717 --> 00:41:54,888 we now have the honor of carrying on his legacy.
00:42:12,489 --> 00:42:13,531 You coming back to the bar?
00:42:13,615 --> 00:42:15,742 We're having a little Christmas get-together.
00:42:15,825 --> 00:42:17,577 Think I'm gonna go see my mom.
00:42:17,661 --> 00:42:20,205 This job kind of made me realize I've got a second chance with her,
00:42:20,288 --> 00:42:21,331 thanks to you.
00:42:21,831 --> 00:42:24,125 There's never really enough time. I don't wanna waste it.
00:42:24,626 --> 00:42:25,835 Wow.
00:42:25,919 --> 00:42:27,420 Merry Christmas, Mr. Wilson.
00:42:27,504 --> 00:42:28,546 Miss Devereaux.
00:42:40,183 --> 00:42:42,310 Okay. What did I say? What did I say?
00:42:42,394 --> 00:42:44,104 I told everyone.
00:42:44,187 --> 00:42:46,231 And you were like, "Even Hardison can't do it."
00:42:46,314 --> 00:42:48,316 -I don't sound like that. You are. -Face it. I'm the latest.
00:42:48,400 --> 00:42:49,609 -I'm the greatest. -You are.
00:42:49,693 --> 00:42:54,114 Hardison ain't shi--
00:42:54,197 --> 00:42:56,074 -Welcome… -[Hardison] Mmm.
00:42:56,157 --> 00:42:58,076 -…home, Hardison. -[Hardison] Mm-hmm.
00:42:58,159 --> 00:43:00,537 That's definitely what I was about to say.
00:43:00,620 --> 00:43:02,414 -That's what you was about to say? -Oh, yeah.
00:43:02,497 --> 00:43:05,250 That's what you was about… You sure you weren't gonna say,
00:43:06,167 --> 00:43:10,005 "All hail the queen of the con"?
00:43:10,088 --> 00:43:12,340 -Ay! Hey. -Ay!
00:43:12,424 --> 00:43:14,926 -I name you… -Oh.
00:43:15,010 --> 00:43:17,887 -…Breanna of the Christmas Carol… -Oh.
00:43:17,971 --> 00:43:21,516 …first person to successfully pull off the Carol Con.
00:43:21,599 --> 00:43:24,519 And thus, first of her name.
00:43:25,228 --> 00:43:26,813 -Can I get a-- -[exclaims]
00:43:26,896 --> 00:43:27,981 -Incoming. -What? What?
00:43:28,064 --> 00:43:30,692 -Oh, my back, my back. My back. Ah. -[shrieks, giggles] Ooh! Ooh.
00:43:30,775 --> 00:43:33,028 Um, uh, hey, Sophie, something came for you.
00:43:33,111 --> 00:43:34,112 Oh. What…
00:43:36,740 --> 00:43:37,907 It's from Gisele.
00:43:39,242 --> 00:43:40,285 It's a banana plant.
00:43:40,368 --> 00:43:41,911 -Geez. -I'm sorry.
00:43:41,995 --> 00:43:44,205 [stammers] It's cool, I'll just… I-I-I'll buy a new back.
00:43:44,289 --> 00:43:46,333 [chuckles] I've missed you. Did you miss me?
00:43:46,958 --> 00:43:48,543 Why you asking stupid questions?
00:43:53,173 --> 00:43:55,008 [sighing]
00:43:55,508 --> 00:43:56,634 [chuckles]
00:43:59,721 --> 00:44:01,306 You're thinking about him, aren't you?
00:44:02,974 --> 00:44:03,975 Yeah, I am.
00:44:05,894 --> 00:44:10,023 You know, after Nate lost his son, Sam,
00:44:11,107 --> 00:44:14,361 he believed that he'd lost his chance at a legacy.
00:44:14,444 --> 00:44:18,198 That he was gonna die like the moon.
00:44:19,366 --> 00:44:20,867 But he didn't.
00:44:21,576 --> 00:44:25,288 Before Nate died, he… [inhales deeply, sighs]
00:44:25,372 --> 00:44:27,749 He sent out lots of little green shoots.
00:44:27,832 --> 00:44:29,501 -[chuckles] -Us.
00:44:30,585 --> 00:44:31,586 [Hardison] Not just us.
00:44:32,379 --> 00:44:34,089 All the Leverage teams around the world.
00:44:35,090 --> 00:44:36,591 Teams that become like…
00:44:36,674 --> 00:44:37,842 Families.
00:44:37,926 --> 00:44:39,511 Teams that make a difference.
00:44:40,011 --> 00:44:42,263 Make a difference to people that are hurting.
00:44:42,972 --> 00:44:45,475 Teams that owe their existence to Nate.
00:44:47,811 --> 00:44:49,437 That is Nate's legacy.
00:45:36,317 --> 00:45:37,819 Grandma, you have to help me. I'm so scared.
00:45:37,902 --> 00:45:39,529 [Sophie] It's called a Grandparent Scam.
00:45:39,612 --> 00:45:42,532 Everybody is an easy mark if they have the right bait.
00:45:42,615 --> 00:45:45,660 They used your daughter to scam your mother.
00:45:45,743 --> 00:45:48,288 That's right. And I wanna know how, I wanna know why, and I wanna know who.
00:45:49,956 --> 00:45:52,459 [Sophie] Donovan Keyes is a pool shark.
00:45:52,542 --> 00:45:54,836 And ended up the cellmate of Nikolai Bravta.
00:45:54,919 --> 00:45:56,337 Slovakian criminal alpha, right?
00:45:56,921 --> 00:45:58,548 I guess that makes me the inside man.
00:45:58,631 --> 00:45:59,632 Let's play a friendly game.
00:45:59,716 --> 00:46:01,050 [grunting]
00:46:02,635 --> 00:46:05,263 We have a shark to reel in.
