The Unwritten by Mike Carey (2010-2015)

Tom Taylor's life was screwed from go. His father created the Tommy Taylor fantasy series, boy-wizard novels with popularity on par with Harry Potter. The problem is Dad modeled the fictional epic so closely to Tom's real life that fans are constantly comparing him to his counterpart, turning him into the lamest variety of Z-level celebrity. i primarily work in digital illustration and sketches, but I like to do larger pieces with watercolor, ink, acrylics, or linocut printing.

i take a lot of my stylistic inspiration from the golden age of illustration, art nouveau, vintage storybook illustration, tattoo art, contemporary comic styles, woodblock printing, botanical/zoological illustrations, and abrahamic/biblical iconography.

most of my work outside of my fanart includes imagery derived from nature, birds (specifically crows), spiritualism, religious iconography, and fantasy.

Why do you think people take Tonks' character traits and give them to Sirius?

Because Tonks is one of the most disrespected characters.

But I also think how the fandom portrays Sirius is larger than people ignoring the existence of Tonks. There are many interpretations of Sirius in fandom, including, but not limited to, punk, 70s rocker, Rebel Without A Cause, feminine, and androgynous, and I think the different aesthetics reflect our individual interpretations of what cool and rebellious mean.

Sirius is described as cool, and we know he is a troublemaker who ran away from his family and owns a motorcycle. I think people took those tidbits and pictured an image of someone like Jess Mariano from Gilmore Girls. Or they imagined a Bowie-loving glam rocker or they imagined a more modern queer aesthetic. Or various other things that i've seen in the past 20 years.

And I don't necessarily blame people for imagining characters in muggle clothes versus wizard fashion because robes aren't described in detail compared to muggle clothes in the books. And robes just don't seem cool, you know? They are medieval and weird.

You know who is cool? Bill Weasley with his fang earring and boots. Bill's fashion and appearance, just like Tonks, is described in detail. It is easy to visualize.

What do we know of Sirius?

Sirius is a rebel. He ran away from home and is extremely critical of upper-class wizarding society, the government, and blood purism. He joined a secret underground anti-fascist organization! He was a fighter on the frontlines of a war where they were outnumbered 20 to 1! His motorcycle is a sign of his interest in some parts of muggle culture and rebeling but I think it also says a lot more about his advanced skill and his need to keep himself busy.

He has long hair! But the long hair isn't a style choice. He didn't have a barber in Azkaban and then his grooming declined in OOTP when he was depressed. Pre-Azkaban, Sirius had short hair.

He wore a phoenix t-shirt in the prequel short story.

He wore Azkaban robes (again not a style choice)

He wore whatever he found in Grimmauld Place.

Tattoos and piercings are never mentioned when describing Sirius but they are for other characters.

But what I think people also ignore when assigning an aesthetic to a teenage and young adult Sirius Black is his privileged upbringing and how that shapes his personality and sense of self and how he'd present himself. I know @artemisia-black has written about this before and you should check out her blog for some great Sirius metas.

I'm not saying Sirius never wore muggle clothes but I don't think he'd be dedicated to representing a muggle subculture or style. He'd be better at dressing muggle than other pure bloods but he'd keep it simple, not fashionable.

Once There Was ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ by Kiyash Monsef.

An Iranian American girl discovers that her recently dead father was a veterinary for magical animals and that she - like him - has inherited the ability to help these animals because of a family line reaching back for hundreds of generations.

The story deals with grief, rage, neglect and how it all intersects.

But it's also an incredibly magical story that wakes up all the wonder and love for animals that most children have and some never lose.

Interspersed through the book are also short fables and legends that Marjan's father used to tell her when she was young and are now gaining new meaning as she understands that they were more than stories.

(totally also recommend the audiobook version for those who enjoy good narration. Nikki Massoud does a freaking excellent job)

(Marjan does develop subtly budding feelings for someone in the story but it's kept very, very background. On a scale from 0 to 10 the romance reaches barely a 2).

Vespertine ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ by Margaret Rogerson.

A story about a girl named Artemisia who is training to become a Gray Sister. A nun who cleanses the bodies of the dead so that their souls would not return as ravenous spirits that would then threaten the lives of the living.

But then her convent gets attacked by possessed soldiers and she's forced to pick up a sword holding the spirit of a very powerful revenant - a malevolent spirit of mass destruction that could possess her and kill everyone around her indiscriminately - despite not having the training of a Vespertine. So the only one who can teach her what she needs to know is the Revenant itself.

(The main character is autistic, antisocial and extremely introverted. And as for the romance, there is someone who develops feelings for her and we as the reader kinda notice it, but Artemisia the character notices nothing (also, the someone in question is not the Revenant, just thought I should clarify that). Amounts of romance in the book, like 1/10)

A House With Good Bones ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ by T. Kingfisher.

A Southern Gothic light horror with a bit of humor thrown in.

Sam Montgomery is worried about her mother so when her Paleoentomology dig falls through after she's already sublet her apartment for the next few months, she temporarily moves back in with her mother.

The mother who seems to be very stressed out while saying she's fine, and also seems to have acquired a sudden personality transplant. More specifically, she seems to have changed the house from the bright and colorful place it's been for decades, into the cookie cutter, bland (and slightly racist) fifties commercial kinda place it once was under the iron thumb of Sam's dead grandmother.

Is this some kind of weird delayed grief? Early onset alzheimers?

And why isn't there a single bug or insect in the entirety of the back yard's rose garden? Or why does she wake up to thousand's of ladybugs crawling all over each other - and Sam - one night in her childhood bedroom? And what's up with all these vultures staring at their house 24/7?

(Sam's POV is hilarious, her relationship with her mother one of the most genuinely emotional aspects of the book, and the story creepy enough to be exciting without reaching the point that would have made me throw the book down a hole for my own peace of mind. The romance... eh, there's a very nice dude Sam wouldn't mind going out with but it's not all that relevant to anything so amounts of romance don't reach past 2 out of 10).

Thornhedge ⭐⭐⭐⭐ by T. Kingfisher, Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ by Heather Fawcett (okay this one's a bit heavier on the amount of romance but it gets points for not being annoying and still doesn't reach past 4 out of 10 in its amount, would recommend this book for people who enjoyed The Memoirs of Lady Trent), Translation Slate ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐by Ann Leckie, The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter ⭐⭐⭐⭐ by Theodora Goss (the daughters of classical book scientists like Frankenstein, Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, Moreau and others come together to solve some White Chapel murders and maybe uncover a society that has been doing human experiments on women. 0.5 out of 10 on amounts of romance).

CHICKEN OF THE WOODS (laetiporus cincinnatus) - if I ever found one of these I would bash my head off a tree in excitement and glee

Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria) - I found a few of these while out walking with my uni group 2 years ago and accidentally held up the whole group with a TED Talk. Luckily they were all also mentally ill / autistic /nd art students so I didn’t bore anybody

Ghost Fungus!!!!! (Omphalotus Nidiformis) - if I had the money I would 100000% fly to australia and venture out into the blue mountains at night just to see these beauties bioluminesce.

Vivianite: anyone who brings up crystals around me has probably heard me go “DO YOU KNOW VIVIANITE GROWS OUT OF CORPSES” at some point. It’s a ferrous iron phosphate mineral that grows in a monoclinic crystal system and thrives in anaerobic boggy environments. It forms when the hydroxyapatite in your bones (major source of phosphate) reacts with water from a waterlogged tomb and the iron in any surrounding rocks, resulting in cool shit like blue skeletons and crystals growing out yer teef

Grape Agate: it’s not agate. It’s not chalcedony. It’s not amethyst. It’s a variety of quartz silica which are commonly termed as ‘amethystine’, and instead of taking on the macrocrystalline monoclinic formations typical of normal quartz, it’s made up of up micro crystals that grow radially in a botryoidal form. Also comes in green and white. It’s only found in the Manakarra Beach in Indonesia.

Strychnine: (Strychnos Loganiaceae, Nux Vomica) - the one that leaves you with a hideous grin. It causes violent muscle contractions, enough to make the body bend back to an unnatural degree before the victim finally dies of asphyxiation. Particularly horrid as the victim remains conscious throughout the ordeal and is very much aware of what is happening. In fact, the victim is hyperaware. Nasty stuff. It inhibits your postsynaptic glycine receptors in your spinal cord, which causes the intensely painful and involuntary contortions. Also it’s mentioned in the Herbal of Rufinus as ‘good for helping to balance the phlegmatic and choleric humours’ through purging (vomiting, hence why it’s called the ‘vomiting nut’), and was a medicine to be used with great caution.

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum Apiaceae, Mantegazzianum): all parts of this plant are toxic. man fuck this stuff, if you touch it you’re literally gonna be burning and blistering every time the sun touches your skin for months and possibly even years after coming into contact with this hellspawn plant. Its active constituents are furanocoumarins, which basically mutate your skin cells to become incredibly sensitive to light. It’s a mutagenic and possibly carcinogenic photoactive compound.

Mandrake (Mandragora Officinarum): it’s in the nightshade family (Solanaceae)! Revered in folklore for the way its roots look like a person, said to ‘scream and cause death’ upon being uprooted. It’s a powerful narcotic, hallucinogenic and emetic plant, meaning that you try and eat this shit and you’ll be absolutely off your tits and vomming your guts up before you kick it.

Stupid fact about me: I have, in fact, ingested wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium) to see what sort of effect it would have out of curiosity, but didn’t get very far as it tasted fucking awful (I made a tea). Tastes like nail polish remover, 0/10 do not recommend. Didn’t ingest enough to feel any sort of thujone effect and my little experiment was safely conducted. I did, however, burn some to see if that would do anything and it made me feel rank in the tummy. No hallucinogenic effect. Again. 0/10 do not recommend.

I know my capabilities. I know what I am capable of, what I can improve and how little I am bad at. My soldiers knew it, my enemies knew it. But none so much as my lord, the great King Darius; so much so that he allowed me to be the guardian of his youngest daughter, Princess Y/N. 

Of course, this has its advantages and disadvantages. 

My king had full confidence in me to place his most precious treasure in my care. This made my chest swell with pride. 

But, being on the lookout for a spoiled child like Princess Y/N, I had to say goodbye to my faithful friend, the ocean. 

The sea, the port and my ship would always be an important part of my history, being the only thing I had known throughout my life. They would always be a part of my life. Despite the gulp of salt water I got the last time I was in those parts.  

Before I could ramble on, the palace doors opened abruptly, causing me to cut myself with the small dagger I was playing with. 

"So here you are." 

And there was my least favorite voice, the voice of Princess Y/N. Sometimes I really felt like I was going to rip her head off every time I heard her voice. 

"Yes, I was trying to find my happiness, and you just scared it away." 

"Ha ha, even though I really love your jokes, I need you to stop slacking off and accompany me to the market." 

"Do I have an option class?" 

"Not unless you want to continue to keep your own head." 

Before I could comment any further, the princess's head disappeared, letting me know that I had no choice. 

I put my gun away and set out to follow the woman.

The market always caused me headaches and some dizziness, but today, these symptoms were only getting worse. 

"Hey, will you stop being so slow?" shouted the princess just watching as I reloaded my weight in my hand back onto a bard. After a while, I still didn't move "Hey, are you okay?" 

"Yes, I'm perfectly fine" just as I tried to keep walking, but, I felt my head getting even dizzier. 

"No, you're not well." 

Without much time to process, I felt my legs fail me, but just before my chest hit the ground, the princess's arms caught me. 

"Okay, all in all, you're not well."

"Okay, tell me, what the fuck happened to you?" the princess asked as she wrung out a wet cloth to put on my forehead.

"I told you I don't know."

"So, you're fainting just because?"

"May I not faint!"

The princess changed the cloth to proceed to sit on the small bed she had forced me to lie on.

A silence fell between us, me trying to calm my breathing, while T/Y began to play with her fingers, her eyes fixed on the dock.

"Have you had any other symptoms?"

"What?"

"Did it hurt any more, silly?!"

"I don't remember."

"Have you been feeling tired?"

"More than usual."

"Do you feel nauseous in the morning?"

"Not just in the morning" that's when I realized something wasn't quite right. "In fact, I also feel like throwing up when the sea breeze hits my nose."

"The smell of the sea?" I nodded. "How strange, more so being you."

Again an awkward silence filled the room. Until suddenly the princess jumped to her feet.

"Sure!, you're pregnant!"

"Of course not!"

"Does my father know that you are still in service despite your condition?"

"What condition?"

"Well, your pregnancy."

"THAT I'M NOT PREGNANT, DAMN IT!" the shout startled the princess so much that it made her suddenly shut up "excuse me."

"When was the last time you had blood coming out down there?"

Seeing that the princess was taking the conversation very seriously, I got out of bed and sat up.

"I don't really remember."

"Were you with your boyfriend these past few days?"

"Boyfriend?, what are you talking about, a person like me doesn't have time to have partners?"

"So, how the hell did you get pregnant?" we both stared at each other, until the memory came to my mind making me look away uncomfortably. "Artemisia, are you okay?"

"Actually… if anything happened."

Weat was running down my forehead, while a constant stabbing pain in my spine, my hips and my pelvic bone causing me to start pushing unconsciously.

For the first time in my life I could say that I was completely terrified.

"Where is she, is she okay?" A tiny, tiny part of my heart felt so much better as soon as I heard T/Y's voice. She quickly walked over to me.

"Are you okay, how are you feeling?"

"Never in my life… have I ever felt as much pain as I did today" I found it hard to speak, the pain was killing me. "And that… I've been pierced in the stomach with a sword."

We both let out a little giggle.

"I'm glad to hear that at least you still have that acidic sense of humor."

Before I could answer her anything, a stabbing pain in my hip made it impossible for me to think of anything but a piercing scream; causing Y/N herself to freak out.

"Princess" one of the nurses called her attention to her "she's about to give birth".

"Are you okay?"

"Do you realize this is like the eighth time you've asked me that?"

I myself laughed as I watched T/N move from one side of the room to the other, holding the baby in her arms.

"Do you have any names for him yet?"

As time passed, T/N and I became close. She was the only friend I had. She helped me a lot during the pregnancy, with my job and especially with her father. But I still hadn't been 100 percent honest with her. Maybe it's time to be.

"Can I be honest with you?"

"I thought we were friends…" commented the princess as she looked away from the bundle in her arms to look at me.

"We are" I confirmed

"Friends are sincere," she commented, turning her attention back to the baby.

Inhale a large amount of air and exhale slowly.

"I don't know if I want to keep the baby…."

"What?" she stopped abruptly and started walking straight toward me.

"You said you weren't going to judge me!"

"I'm not judging you…just that" she lifted the baby a little so that he was at my eye level "Who wouldn't want this little fish?" she spoke as she pursed her lips, eliciting a sweet, soft voice for the sleeping child's comfort.

I have to admit, they were both completely adorable in my eyes.

"It's not a matter of wanting it or not" I began to speak, trying to stop T/N from putting the child in my exhausted arms "it's simple. I don't know if you remember, your majesty" I watched as the princess rolled her eyes. I laughed internally and continued to make my point "I am part of your father's military corps and one of my main jobs was to protect you, not the other way around."

"If it's the child's safety you're concerned about, I can take care of him"

"Are you crazy?"

"Why?"

"What would your dad say?, what would your brother say?, what would the kingdom say?"

"I thought you realized that I don't care about the opinion of either my dad, or my inept brother, much less the town when I try to run away hiding on a boat." we both laughed. "We can both raise little Hossein. You and me against the world."

"Hossein?"

"Yes, it means beautiful. Just like this baby, right?" she spoke softly as she bounced the baby a little. "Are you just as beautiful as your mommy?"

"I am not beautiful" I commented as I closed my eyes with the intention of sleeping for a moment.

"Did you hear that, little Hossein, you and I will have to prove to your mommy that she is the most beautiful woman to ever walk the planet."

Time passed faster than I would like to admit. And with it, my responsibilities increased. I no longer had to take care of one child, now I had to take care of two.

"Artemisia!"

Not to mention the many tasks that the king gave me.

"Yes, sir, can I help you?"

"No, my daughter, I've just been told by some people that you should see your little ones more often" he smiled at me.

Before he could ask, the door to the throne room crashed open, letting the screams of T/N and Hossein echo throughout the palace.

"Slow down T/N!" shouted the little boy.

"You'll never catch me you little fish!"

As my eyes watched the two unruly little ones screaming and running back and forth, behind me the king's laughter puzzled me a little.

"Oh my daughter, you don't know how much I appreciate the youth and laughter your little Hossein has brought."

"You two, that's enough!"

Both quickly stopped their laughter and stood still. T/N even had to climb down from a step that simulated an obstacle in their game.

"I'm sorry, Mommy" little Hossein pouted rather adorably.

"Yes, sorry mommy."

I had to admit that, when T/N called me mommy, I felt a little electric shock in my intimate part.

"Where have they been?"

"I was with Panem, he promised me he would teach me how to fight, just like you" the boy commented, giving me a toothy smile, the cutest smile I had ever seen.

"That's great, kiddo," I smiled back as my hand tousled his hair. Our way of showing affection for each other. "And you?" I pointed at T/N with my chin.

"I went to see the oracle."

"What for?"

"I tasked her with some important questions for the nation," interrupted the king, winking at T/N.

"Well children, let the king do his job."

My two hands rested on the backs of both of them and guided them out of the room.

Before I knew it Hossein ran off leaving T/N and I alone.

"What did you go to consult the oracle for?"

"My father told you the reason."

"Honey, you know I'm very fond of your father and I'm as close to fond of you as I can get, but I don't think shit of it."

I tried to make her laugh, but T/N just looked at the floor, somewhat uncomfortable.

"If I tell you the real reason, you'll laugh at me."

"Princess, I would never laugh at you."

"Close your eyes" I looked at her suspiciously. "Trust me."

I closed my eyes as instructed, but we didn't move or do anything.

Which began to intrigue me even more.

When I least realized it, T/N's lips collided with mine stealing a kiss, to which I responded almost immediately.

I didn't know that I needed a kiss from T/N's lips in order to be completely happy.

When shortness of breath set in and we had to separate, we both gave each other a smile.

"Hmm I didn't know I wanted this so badly."

"You wanted it too?"

"Sure, T/N. Remember, it's you and me against the world."

"You, me and Hossein" reminded me T/N.

"Sure, let's not forget the little fish. You, Hossein and me."

Ok ok I need to put this somewhere so I get this out of my system so bear with me but -

FINAL FANTASY VIII // RESIDENT EVIL CROSSOVER AU

G.A.R.D.E.N. ⸻ Global Academy for Regional Defense against Epidemics and Non-life Working closely with orphanages worldwide, Umbrella Pharmaceuticals funded the three Academies Trabia, Balmamb and Galbadia as part of the Spencer Foundation as another branch to screen the populace for extraordinarily gifted children to funnel into their corporate system or, otherwise, into their research divisions (either as researchers themselves, or test subjects).

S.E.E.D. ⸻ Special Extraction and Evacuation Divison Trained in the G.A.R.D.E.N. academies, the special forces of these establishments would be primarily dispatched to evacuate high interest personae from possible high danger zones, and sometimes be ordered to support the U.S.S. (Umbrella Security Service) or even the U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service). Unbeknownst to the students succeeding the S.E.E.D. tests to become operatives, they would be exposed to genetic enhancements, allowing them to develop individual skills setting them apart from ordinary soldiers.

B.O.W. doppelganger research Research that has been secretly conducted in the laboratories below Galbadia Academy, working on ways to use clones of famous or prestigious people as doppelgangers infected with a T-Virus variant, acting like a sleeper agent that would only mutate when triggered. Was used to prevent a kidnapping by an underground rebel organisation.

Artemisia A Tricell researcher who has been working from behind the scenes for most of the years prior to Umbrella's downfall, keeping close tabs on the work of S.E.E.D. - there is little known about her or her research, although rumors have been circulating that she was predominantly involved in the doppelganger research, among other things.

Other thoughts that are unsorted:

Guardian Forces in this setting = B.O.W.s that are "junctioned" via the respective, genetically improved S.E.E.D. operators being infected (ergo causing a certain amount of uncontrolled memory loss?) - thus being able to be controlled by the operators, similar to the Lickers in RE: Damnation

Cid & Edea Kramer: Originally planned to have the Spencer Foundation fund more orphanages as the pair was very involved in the Umbrella research prior to the outbreaks, causing them to feel the need to give something back to the communities that had been harmed

HUNK could have been a student of e.g. Galbadia Academy before having been recruited to Rockfort Island for his outstanding talent, thus making him acquainted with Irvine Kinneas.

So…I mentioned to my friends that I had a story that was eating my brain a few weeks back, but then never showed them anything because, well, I wasn’t entirely too sure if they would actually be interested in seeing the designs, and then it stopped eating my brain, and I just sat on the designs for a minute.  But today I decided, screw it – I do really like the designs, and the story is interesting, and shockingly, I do have a name for the story – The Hero’s Party.

Which, I suppose given the title, you can probably guess who these characters are, in a sense, lol.

 Eileen – the voice character, Eileen is a stupidly low level daughter of an inn keeper.  Thanks to her ridiculously low level, she’s pretty much ignored/abused by her family, who view her as absolutely worthless.  Despite this, she’s a generally friendly and helpful girl who is observant and prefers to stay in the shadows.  She ends up being forced to go on a quest for her sister, who’s either sick or cursed, when she happens upon the Hero’s Party.  She initially accidentally approaches them because she’s being harassed, but then accidentally gets trapped in a dungeon with them a bit later.  As a result, despite her level, the Hero requests that she join them, and she does, because she knows she’d have a better chance of getting that item while traveling with the Party.  She mostly just helps out with mundane things – cooking, laundry, mending clothes, that sort of thing, since she’s not useful otherwise.  She ends up falling for the Hero (not surprisingly), but feels guilty about it because she feels like she’s just using them, as well as the fact that she doesn’t really fit in.

Kallum – the Hero, who happens to have a ridiculously high level, on top of having holy powers.  He is, for a lack of a better term, an absolute Boy Scout, believing in honor and justice above everything else.  He and his party are traveling around clearing dungeons before they become a problem.  Unknown to Eileen, he fell in love with her at first sight upon seeing her at the inn they were staying at, and uses dungeon experience as an excuse to get her to travel with them.  He becomes highly protective of her, not really caring that she has no magic level.  He enjoys watching her wonder over her new experiences, which had become mundane for him.    He is also using Eileen a bit, since having her around tends to make potential suitors back off.

Artemisia – a foreigner, she came to the kingdom for the challenge, since her kingdom is full of warrior-types who have explored a lot of the dungeons already.  She ends us joining the Party mostly just for the hell of it, since it seemed more interesting to travel in a group, and she was surprised at how out matched she was in this kingdom, despite having a somewhat high level.  Prior to Eileen joining, she was the weakest member, but it was by an insignificant amount.  She’s actually he one who ‘rescues’ Eileen in their first encounter, because she hates seeing woman harassed.  She pretty much befriends Eileen almost immediately, and likes to joke about making Eileen fall in love with her, despite knowing the mutual attraction between Eileen and Kallum.

Eli – an elf mage, he’s actually the youngest member of the Party, as well as the newest until Eileen showed up.  His magic mostly involved elemental magic, and he joined the Party because he felt like he wasn’t be challenged enough at the Tower he was training at.  He’s the only one who doesn’t trust Eileen at first, partially due to his crush on Kallum, but also because they know nothing about her.  He’s worried she’s there to take advantage of the Party in a way more nefarious way than she actually us, although he does eventually warm up to her and feeling just as protective of her as everyone else, viewing her as a member of the family without really realizing it.  He complains a lot, but no one really takes offense of it.

Gwendolyn – a witch, specializing in healing magic.  She mostly stays in the shadows, preferring not to draw attention to herself, thanks partially to the fact the witches are still somewhat mistrusted in the kingdom.  She wants to use her powers to help people, though, which is why she’s a part of the Party.  She was the third to join after Kallum simply asked her to after their initially encounter, and she agreed because no one wanted her before.  She, like Artemisia, is quick to accept and befriend Eileen when she joins, and is fairly instrumental in her survival.  Eileen basically gives her purpose as a healer, since her low level means that she’s injured far more often.  For the most part, she seems stoic, and she loves ribbing Eli for his magic use, since she’s the more powerful magic user.

Xander – Kallum’s best friend and a partial beastman.  The two of the grew up in the same village, where Xander was ostracized for having beastman blood.  While his father was a result of rape, his mother did sincerely fall in love with his father and the two of the settled a little ways outside of the village.  The other kids were told Xander was dangerous, but Kallum recognized that Xander just needed an outlet to hit things, since Xander isn’t really violent by nature.  He took him a quest of sorts when they were about seven, which turned into an experience neither of them expected, and they ended up bonding because of it.  Xander is incredibly loyal to Kallum as a result, and instantly accepts Eileen once he realizes that Kallum in is love with her, no questions asked.

The next set of designs aren’t of anyone important, per say, but I wanted to design them.

Charlotte – a princess of the kingdom, she’s obsessed with the idea of marrying Kallum, and bugs her father to try to force him to accept, although he refuses every time.  She dislikes Eileen after their initial meeting, but Eileen is the one who points out that Charlotte loves the idea of Kallum, and not Kallum himself.  Rather than being upset at her, Charlotte realizes that she’s correct, and backs off immediately while also developing a close friendship with Eileen as a result, accidentally allowing her to have the backing of the royal family.

Alicia – Eileen’s younger sister, she was born with a higher than average level, and thus was doting and spoiled despite the fact that it’s still technically a low level.  It was just the highest in the village, so everyone thinks that she’s someone special.  She pretty much makes Eileen’s life a living hell, and forces Eileen on the quest to cure her simply because she didn’t want to leave, despite the fact that she’s better equipped to go off adventuring.  She’s pretty much a royal bitch, demanding literally everything that Eileen has for herself.  She becomes obsessed with Kallum after seeing him at their inn in the latter half of the story, and makes it her mission to get her parents to force him to marry her (again, thinking that she’s something special because of her level).

The weird thing about these two is that I had initially planned on Charlotte’s design being for Alicia, with the idea that she wears clothes above her class because she’s spoiled and all, but I liked the design too much, lol.  And it seemed perfect for the princess character I had thought up to befriend Eileen at some point.  So…there you go.

I did come up with names for each of the characters pretty much instantly, except for Xander, who took a couple of tries to figure out his name.  He was supposed to be more brutish, but I can’t really draw that, but what I came up with works really well.  All the designs work really well for each of the characters.

I don’t really have a plot beyond the whole Eileen on a quest and meets us with the Party and joins them, and the trouble they get into because Kallum simply cannot say no to someone claiming to need help, but eh.  I question if this would be a serious story for me or not, but it’s fun to think of scenes from time to time.  And look at pretty designs.  :D

What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?

Besides the people in her immediate friend group/Felix and Festus, she lowkey resents everyone in the Capitol. Maybe even hates them (maybe not the people she grew up with, but the adults for sure).

She's often crying as a defense mechanism to make herself seem weaker and get her father to stop hitting her, but she's also just imagining killing people in her mind. Just so much resentment inside her.

How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?

You know... This might be surprising, but I don't think Artemisia has a solid moral compass. She'll do what is what's good for herself and the people she loves. The reason that she kind of develops one in All That You Can Do is that Brandy's own resentment and unfair life gets Artemisia to identify with the Districts. To her, trying to tear the Capitol down from the inside and make life better in the Districts is not really even about the people in the Districts. It's about her. (not to say her empathy isn't a good thing, but her good deeds start from a self-centered place rather than morality)

Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?

Yeah. Her self-destruction is that she doesn't want to ask people for things but she doesn't want to risk rejection (face any possibility that the people she's closest to her maybe don't care as much as she'd want). If she just told Felix that her father was physically abusive, and she needed to get out of her house. Felix probably would have worked it out with his great-uncle, and there wouldn't have been this weird Felix dates her reluctantly (they both fall in love after they start dating but don't really realize it that well because of their really weird start), half-year breakup, and oh wait, I think we're both in love with our other best friend-> throuple. They probably could have stayed friends caught feels and worked their way to the throuple scenario faster and less convoluted.

Also, she's self-destructive in that she'd let rage and revenge consume and blind her (see her reaction to Close Your Eyes! Felix's death).

Felix Ravinstill (My Honorary OC)

What's something about your OC that people wouldn't expect just from looking at them?

I mean I've talked about Felix being insecure so much on my blog, but I think to most people in Panem, they would not assume that he is. He's got that haughty, confident rich guy facade. Maybe a little quieter than most haughty, confident rich guys at times, but no one who knows him at a surface-level is like "I bet Felix lies awake at night wondering why he isn't living up to the rest of his family."

How easily could your OC be convinced to do something that goes against their moral compass?

If someone's really important to him, then I think it would talk some conversations. He'd have to see why this person needs something amoral to happen, but if someone he cares for is in trouble or it's really important (as in someone he cares for while fundamentally break who they are to not have the thing happen), then he'll fold.

There is actually a conversation that has to happen, and it could take weeks or months depending on how pressing the thing is. Felix can be surprisingly principled. Unfortunately, his moral compass is the ideal he set for his family, and when they go against that ideal, it's easier for him to excuse them doing bad stuff (but he'll try and keep his hands clean... and probably fail.)

Is your OC self-destructive? In what ways?

A big thing for me about Felix and Artemisia is that they're actually pretty similar once you get down to the core of them. They self-destruct in similar ways.

I have also given Felix the opportunity to let rage and revenge consume him (It's Still You), but while Artemisia's problem is she strangely doesn't like imposing herself on her loved ones at the risk of rejection. Felix has a willingness to be imposed upon to a fault. He will try and change himself for his family and others to accept him, and it's not good for him (I don't think it can be good for anyone). Artemisia forces herself to compromise her desires and wants. Felix, fully confuses other people's desires and wants for his own. (And I think Felix does work through that a bit as he gets older, but the tragedy of him is that he never fully gets to come into his own). Both of them are so willing to sacrifice so much of themselves :( (for not even good reasons!)

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? (I'm skipping the first two here, because they're my Remadora Ficlets and my Fluffbruary stories) 1. Something Bad Rated M, Harry comes downstairs to make breakfast for Ginny's birthday, only to discover that Lily has shown her first instance of accidental magic and covered the kitchen in flour.

2. Not Tonight Rated M, My first Tedromeda fic! Written for the TTB Yule Bash last year and the beginning of an obsession.

3. The Truth Rated G, I didn't realise this one had so many kudos. It's Tonks telling her parents about Sirius' death and admitting to them about her situationship with Remus the morning after the Ministry.

4. When Pain is Over Rated G, Lily Luna gets an insight into what Ginny went through during the war.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I try to respond to every comment, mostly because I love when authors reply to me. Sometimes I fall behind or I miss some, but I do my best.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angtiest ending? Probably Grief which is an exploration of Andromeda's grief after the war, or Don't Go, which is Tonks leaving Teddy with Andromeda. Basically anything to do with Andromeda losing nearly everyone she holds dear. 7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Too many to count, I love a happy ending!!

8. Do you get hate on fics? No I've never gotten any hate, but I do mostly write for a smaller ship that doesn't have a competing ship, so there's less opportunity for hate.

9. Do you write smut. If so what kind? I do, but I struggle with it. I much prefer a fade to black sometimes

Onyx: By all means, don’t talk about it and let her think you’re not interested, or that you want to date Artemisia

Carson knew Onyx was right, but he wasn’t up to risking Ariadne making fun of him just yet. Instead he did his normal work on the mural while sneaking glances at Ariadne from afar.

Mrs T: Great job Carson

Carson: Oh, thanks. I’m still not sure what I want it to be yet though

Mrs T: That’s fine, it’ll tell you as you go. Did I hear the radio right this morning? Your mum is getting a star on the walk of fame?

Carson: Yeah

Mrs T: Well tell her we're all very impressed

Mrs T: Okay everyone, settle down. Phones away

Zhafira: But if it’s computer science why can’t we? Are phones not just small computers?

Mrs T: Everyone put them on silent! We need to focus. The topic we discuss today will be on the exams

Carson pulled his from his pocket to double check and saw he’d got a text at the end of lunch from Ariadne.

Ariadne: I didn’t want to interrupt you, you looked so focused! But good luck for the ceremony

She’d remembered! Although he supposed someone’s parent getting a walk of fame star was memorable. It didn’t mean she liked him. He didn’t have time to reply now but he made a mental note to send a text of thanks after class.

So all the Foster extended family traveled to Del Sol Valley for the afternoon. They watched with excitement as Kayleigh became the second active sim of mine to get the honour. First recipient was Mortimer Goth, let’s hope she has a brighter future than the now dead author.

Back in Sulani everyone and their suitcases pile in. Charlie and her wife Kaori with their dog Clover. Keira and her wife Marta. Reece and his partner Samir. Kayleigh and Carson welcome everyone while Harvey gets a head start on cooking. While Reece is playing guitar outside Samir asks Kayleigh if he can have a word with her and Harvey. Keira really hopes it’s about what she thinks it is.

Samir: Thanks. Reece and I have talked. After he finishes his degree he’d like to get engaged but, well, I’d like your permission to propose to him. And marry him. Please. I would like to marry him.

Kayleigh: Absolutely!

Harvey: Hmm

Kayleigh: Harvey that’s the most words we’ve heard Samir say at once. I think he deserves a response

Harvey: Are you going to give me grandbabies?

Kayleigh: Harvey!

Harvey: Because if you will then obviously yes

Kayleigh: Harvey!

Harvey: I’m kidding. Of course you can. We’d love you to keep him happy

Samir: *sighs in relief* Thank you

Harvey: When you told Kayleigh you could probably get him pregnant because you’re a werewolf was that like a throw away comment or?

Samir: *chuckles* I don’t think I could. Plus, imagine him pregnant

Kayleigh: *laughs* Oh he’d be too dramatic for anyone to handle

Harvey: But you will have kids right

Kayleigh: *sighs* I’m leaving before you embarrass yourself even more

Harvey: Good, good. Now what are your proposal plans

Samir: Big? Flashy?

Harvey: Oh he'd love that. Make sure it’s well lit and get someone to record

Samir: I will. Deanna probably

Harvey: We best get back out there before he gets suspicious. Oh I hope this means we can expect more talking from you. Not that silence isn’t golden of course but you probably need to rest your vocal chords after such a long discussion. I can say things like that you see because you’re going to be my son in law

Harvey walks out chuckling.

Samir *under his breath in confusion* white people

Carson: Hey Reece. Do you need help with your bags?

Reece: Do I need help? What’s with you?

Carson: Mum said that Samir really is a werewolf. I’m sorry for being mean on the phone about it

What fandoms do you write for?

I bounce around fandoms a lot AND write for exchanges pretty frequently, so i'm not as much of a steady fandom person. You can go to my user page and expand fandoms to see just how true that is. Old standbys are probably Star Wars and Naruto, as insane as that sounds.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Me and You and a Dog Named Boo - 1,411 kudos. Venom movies Venom/Eddie/Reader cross-country roadtrip with some mild plot and lots of porn. I wrote this with my partner and a close friend and it may have taken us 5 years to finish but we had an immense amount of fun along the way.

General Organa's List of Things You May No Longer Do - 750 kudos. Short humor fill for a SW kinkmeme prompt from back in 2016. Writing-wise I don't think it's anything special but it was my first fic posted to AO3.

Artemisia in Snow - 402 kudos. Reylo hypothermia fic, simple as. Did a lot of research on hypothermia for this one. I think it ranks so highly in kudos simply because it's one of my few T-rated fics.

Vestal - 394 kudos. Short short short Kylo Ren character study. I wrote this one night and posted it immediately, but I'm still very fond of it. Lots of gender going on. I feel proud that it was so well-received and kicked off a long-term fandom friendship of mine.

Take a Slice - 310 kudos. Kirikacchako threesome fic, what more is there to say? Also written with two close friends in a round-robin format during an in-person visit. Very fun, if not all that complex.

These fics are all fun and great but ultimately overall they don't represent my best writing or my personal favorite fics that I've written.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Deep sigh I wish I was better about this. I almost always respond to exceptionally long comments because they're SO important to me, but otherwise it can be hard. I have a huge backlog that I'll likely never get to if for no other reason than some of them are SO OLD.

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Maybe Hard Cover. Obi-Wan/Qui-Gonn Bad Guys Made Them Do It noncon where they walk away with their relationship is kind of in tatters and, worse, we know that the river of canon will flow on. I find the idea of them not getting to resolve what happened before Qui-Gonn's death way more devastating than the death alone.

Caw, Caw, Koodle-Yah is also pretty angsty.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I can't lie I'm a sucker for happy endings, so I think a lot of the fics I write have them? (Outside of all the noncon that makes up about 1/3 of my output.) Maybe the happiest to me is Come Calling in that it involves a nice getting together with the promise of a future. The ending is very rosy, but it came from the heart (and the hole).

Do you get hate on fics?

Once or twice. I had someone get MASSIVELY upset at me for choosing not to spoil a surprise in one of my fics in the tags. We had a short interaction in the comments that didn't satisfy them so they sent me an EMAIL complaining about it further and demanding that I "admit" I did it out of spite, which I definitely didn't.

Do you write smut?

HAHAHAHAHA. Yes. Prodigiously.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I do not. I don't want to knock anyone who does but they've always seemed vaguely silly to me? I prefer canon-swap AUs to straight-up crossovers.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

I think once or twice I've had someone request to translate a fic into Russian, but I'm not sure if they ever went through with it.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't speak another language, so I probably wouldn't go there unless I was close enough to someone who did that they could help. I sometimes find it a bit cheesy when people do this but ultimately it won't stop me from reading a fic.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, many! I love co-writing. Having someone to cheerlead you through the tough sections and share the load of writing is really nice. I enjoy the creative process of bouncing ideas off of each other and most of the time this outweighs the difficulty of making compromises.

What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Most of my favorite ships are ones that I don't write for, or even read for. Often they're ones where the text has everything I want. That said, it's probably Ashitaka/San from Princess Mononoke or Cam/Pal.

What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Probably the unpublished Arcane fic that's about Cait/Vi failing as a relationship and slowly breaking up disastrously because of their experiential differences. The idea of them just crumbling apart fascinates me but I haven't been able to find much momentum to really write the damn thing.

What are your writing strengths?

I think dialogue! I really like writing it, the process of tweaking it, AND it's my favorite part of a fic to read.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Eurgh....plot. Plot is so hard for me. I'm not a gardener or a pantser, but an architect with aphantasia. I'll have an idea but how to get there just makes me draw a blank. It takes a lot of effort to structure themes, ideas, and theses into actual stories, which is a bit embarrassing to admit. I still love to write, though.

First fandom you wrote for?

Naruto! I was about 12 I think and wrote an unfinished Sakura/Gaara fic based loosely on an existing fic that I really loved.

Favorite fic you’ve written?

Probably either Fires That Fence the World In or Steal the Blush.

Fires is my first Locked Tomb fic and a true labor of love. I put a lot of work, some actual research, and a great deal of elbow grease into that fic and feel a great, tender affection for it in my heart.

Steal the Blush was a gift for my partner where I had free reign to play with the Hannibal dolls in an omegaverse setting however I wanted, and I did exactly that. Omegaverse isn't a trope I'd ever write for myself (and squicks me out in many cases), but it was a fun challenge to make it work for myself. I also think I got the character voices JUST right.
