Tumblr media

Is the country name Singapore a Chinese word?
‘Singapore’ isn’t a Chinese word, it's an anglicised version of the name ‘Singa pura’ meaning ‘lion city’ which is derived from the Sanskrit language. And before we were even called ‘Singapura’, we were called ‘Temasek’ which is possibly derived from the same root as the word ‘tasek’, which means “lake” in Malay. Tasek implies a reference to a piece of land surrounded by water. The name also appears in sources related to the Zheng He voyages of the early 15th century.
Also, Singapore’s original Chinese name wasn’t even called ‘Xinjiapo 新加坡’. It was instead called ‘Nanyang 南洋’ which in turn is a sinocentric Chinese term for the warmer and fertile geographical region along the Southern coastal regions of China and beyond, otherwise known as the 'South Sea' or Southeast Asia.
Lastly, we were called ‘Syonan-to 昭南島’ during Japanese occupation which meant "Light of the South Island".

A lone tomb, a memory of Syonan Shipyard, and their links to Keppel House
Much has been made about the “mysterious” solitary Japanese tomb sitting on the southern slopes of Mount Faber. The tomb, which could be thought of as a memorial to a painful time in Singapore’s history, contains the remains of a member of staff of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) Kobe shipyard, a naval architect by the name of Komoto Ekasa (or Omoto Egasa). Komoto was among an group of 94 MHI…

Tumblr media

Raffles' rich history.
In 1819, a small port city on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula was founded. This city, known as Singapore, has grown and transformed over the past 200 years and is now one of the most prosperous cities in Southeast Asia. At the heart of this transformation was Stamford Raffles, an ambitious British administrator who set out to develop this small port into a bustling trading hub.

When Raffles first arrived in Singapore in 1819, he saw potential where no one else did. He envisioned transforming this sleepy fishing village into a major trading center that would be open to all traders regardless of race or religion. To accomplish his vision, Raffles proposed several radical measures, such as abolishing slavery and giving freedom of trade to all merchants who chose to do business in Singapore. He also proposed setting up strong government institutions that could help maintain law and order in the city.   The impact of Raffles’ vision. Raffle’s vision for Singapore paid off almost immediately. Thanks to his measures, merchants from all over Asia began flocking to Singapore looking for opportunities to do business in this new port city. With increased trade came increased wealth and prosperity for many people living in Singapore. The influx of new money also allowed Raffles to invest heavily in infrastructure development such as roads, ports, and public buildings which further improved the economy and made life easier for everyone living in Singapore.

The stunning Long Bar at Raffles Hotel is also known for being the birthplace of the Singapore Sling cocktail. During World War II, Raffles Hotel was used as a base by Japanese soldiers. They renamed Syonan Ryokan and it was eventually taken back by the British Navy in 1945. The hotel underwent $160 million of renovations in 1989 and was re-opened to guests in 1991.

Architecture and Design.
The Raffles Hotel is known for its stunning colonial architecture and unique design. It was initially built as a private home by Armenian hotelier Tigran Sarkies and, over the years, has been transformed into one of Singapore's most famous buildings. The exterior of the Raffles Hotel follows typical colonial-era architecture, featuring Georgian-style windows, white walls, and decorative columns. Inside, however, the building has been renovated multiple times to reflect changing tastes and styles - from Art Deco influences during its heyday in the 1930s to contemporary modern touches today. Its numerous courtyards are also filled with lush greenery that gives visitors a sense of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of Singapore's city life.

Raffles also sources sustainable food products from local suppliers and cultivates an organic herb garden for their restaurant dishes.
Conclusion.

Since then, it has become home to many influential world leaders, celebrities, and dignitaries from all walks of life. Today, Raffles Hotel continues to be an integral part of Singapore's legacy as it stands tall amidst modern skyscrapers and rapidly changing cityscapes.   Sources: THX News & Wikipedia. hiding here from twitter cause uh
i think its hella telling when the most detailed and heartfelt condolences written on twitter in regards to shinzo abe's death is 99% made up of extreme right leaning profiles... also god the number of people who think he's done nothing wrong and theres no history revisionism going on, when i just highlighted how even now there are extremists calling my island syonan-to, then having 1 Japanese getting shocked that we're being called that, and then proceeded to downplay my sympathy with fellow SEA countries highlighting the same concern is really... something
i mean what is that if not history revisionism... personally i dont need an apology bc the people who did that crap is in the past, but i do expect acknowledgement all that crap happened at the very least
also on the flip side theres a lot of memes about it and it's crossed my personal tolerance so
a break sounds good
