December 4, 2022
Livia was sitting on the couch with Kate, both sitting in robes and their hair in braids with a hair mask in, with a clay face mask on their faces and Kate was working on Livia’s nails.
Tyler was sitting next to them leaning his head back on the couch and had his cucumbers still on his eyes.
Livia has been adored by the couple since she met them and at least once a month usually a few times a month they always have a spa night and just gossip.
Livia also loves to babysit their three dogs when the two want to go on a date night and the two will always come home and find her fast asleep on the couch with their dogs cuddled around Livia.
“Soooo!” Tylee singsonged as he leaned up and caught the cucumbers that fell off his face and tossed them into his mouth.
Kate and Livia shared an exasperated look but both turned to Tyler.
“When are you going to put poor johnny out of his misery and tell him you’re in love with him.” Tyler looked extremely curious as he blunty asked Livia.
The whole team very quickly picked up on the fact Wyatt is completely in love with Livia, it was extremely easy to realize and he is always following her around like a puppy in love.
But the team could also tell Livia was also just in love with Wyatt, meaning they have seen her speak more words to him in one day than she had said to all of them in her first month in Dallas.
Also how they both of them are always touching each other and Wyatt and Livia are always found cuddling with each other and always both fast asleep.
Livia choked on her own breath and her eyes widening so much they nearly looked like they were going to pop out.
Kate winced in sympathy and gently rubbed Livia’s back as she tried to catch her breath again.
“What! Me and Wy are just friends.” Livia quickly spluttered out still looking completely shocked.
Tyler let out a booming laugh, “You don’t actually think that.” Tyler slowly stopped laughing when he saw Livia’s face, “You don’t actually think that do you?” Tyler looked extremely incredulous.
“We’re just friends.” Livia protested shrugging back.
“She’s joking.” Tyler shook his head in disbelief and then looked at his girlfriend, “She’s joking right?”
“Do you like him?” Kate gently questioned Livia, turning her full attention to the young girl.
“He’s my best friend.” Livia simply answered and avoiding the question.
“That’s not an anwser.” Tyler piped in and Kate shot him a stern look not wanting to overwhelm Livia too much, especially when it’s obvious she’s pretty confused.
“Liv do you like Wyatt?” Kate gently asked once more giving her an encouraging smile.
Livia blanched looking extremely overwhelmed and confused at the same time, “I uh don’t know.” Livia stuttered out truthfully she never let herself think to much about the idea of liking Wyatt never wanting to mess anything up.
“Alright how about this, i’ll ask you some questions and you see if Wyatt does that to you?” Kate softly suggested and Livia nodded in agreement
“Do you get butterflies around him? like your stomach turns into knots and it makes you nervous but the good nervous?” Kate gently grabbed Livia’s hand and gently rubbed her knuckles comforting
Sixteen year old Livia and Wyatt were each other prom dates and Livia had a dark green dress that had long puffy mesh sleeves and Wyatt had an all black suit with a matching tie and pocket square to her dress
Wyatt gently clipped on the botuiner on her dainty wrist, the flowers matched the two perfect.
Wyatt was having the time of his life being able to go to prom with the girl he’s been in love with for years he looked back up and gently brushed back a baby hair off of her forehead and gave her a fond smile.
Livia didn’t understand why at the time her stomach was turning but she felt extremely excited and her cheeks were burning.
“Does he make you feel safe?” Kate added watching Livia closely.
Livia was tense as she stood with the team by the bar, all she wanted was to go home and get some sleep especially with her ribs hurting from the hit she got that night.
Wyatt looked over trying to find her and saw how tense she was and the pinch between her eyebrows that only shows up when she is uncomfortable.
Wyatt quickly pushed through the crowd quickly and made it right to Livia’s side, he wrapped an arm gently around her shoulder and watch as she tensed before realizing it was him and relaxing into him.
“Wanna go back?” Wyatt’s leaned down and whispered against her ear, and Livia quickly nodded wanting to go home.
She let out a sigh as she relaxed completely against him feeling safe as he led them outside.
“And most importantly does he make you smile?” Kate asked once more.
An eighteen year old Wyatt walked in Livia’s room holding a bag and he frowned at the sight of his best friend looking so sick in bed, she was mostly hidden under the blankets but you could see her bright red nose and glossy eyes.
“Oh Livvy.” Wyatt gently cooed walking over and sitting next to her and gently feeling her forehead that was way too warm.
“Wy.” Livia mumbled her eyes looking up at him pitifully.
“I know i know.” Wyatt mumbled soothingly knowing how much Livia hates being sick.
He set the bag onto her bed, “I got your favorite chicken noodle soup.” Wyatt told her watching as she perked up slightly, “And if you eat most of it i got you chocolate chip cookies.” Wyatt shook the bag of cookies knowing they are her absolute favorite.
“Only if you get under the blanket.” Livia mumbled giving him puppy eyes.
“Like you had to even ask.” Wyatt quipped jack and getting up taking his jacket and shoes off and Livia smiled for the first time since she felt sick and it was all because of her best friend.
“Oh.” Livia breathed out as she realized all these years she has been in love with him.
Kate and Tyler shared a relieved look that they managed to make her figure out her feelings.

Dallas: Darry's Kid Sister
Basically it's Curtis Sister!Reader x Dally where he goes to Darry for girl advice but Darry doesn't know that Dallas is asking for advice about his sister because Dally & the reader haven't told the gang yet. So Dallas has to be kinda vague and Darry doesn't really understand what he's asking but tries to be a solid guy and help anyway.
Idk I just love the idea that Dallas sees Darry as an older brother and Darry is the ultimate advice giver in the gang and its like love and fluff but also a solid bro moment??
Warning: this is a bit ooc for Dal
DALLAS'S POV
"Hey Darry....I've got a question" I say, walking over to the kitchen and leaning on the counter. Darry puts the newspaper down, and looks at me.
"I need some girl advice" I say. I'm not sure how I was going to ask his about this because he didn't exactly know I was about to ask about his sister....with out...saying it's his sister
"Wow...gee I wish Soda was here right now. Now he's a ladies man" Darry says, placing his hands behind him, on the counter.
"Yea but he's at work right now and you're not. You're the only other person in the gang that can give solid advice" I reply.
"Ok so...what's she like" he asks. Oh how perfect...how do I describe his kid sister without describing his kid sister?
"And what exactly do you need help with?" Darry adds on
"I need help showing that I love her, because I feel like she doesn't know how much I do" I say, looking at the floor
"Does she like flowers? Chocolate? What do you think her love language is?" Darry asks
"Yea...she likes flowers. She likes chocolates too, so I think I could get her some. She likes daisies, and she likes roses too. I think....maybe physical touch, she likes sweet words" I say. I really hoped he didn't know Y/n's favorite flower because that made it obvious it was his kid sister.
"That's good. So maybe just hug her lots. Hug her from behind, girls like that. Kiss her neck when you do that, some of them like that. Tell her she's pretty, but compliment her personality too, not just her looks. You dig?" Darry explains.
"Yea..." I say
"Who's the gal? If I knew I could help better." Darry asks. My face goes red
"N-nobody you'd know" I say
DARRY'S POV
I was growing a little suspicious because Y/n likes daisies and roses too, but I tried to not think about it. Because if it was her, he would tell me right?
DALLAS'S POV
"What did some of your girls like?" I ask Darry.
"Don't worry about it. They were all bad people" Darry says.
"What does that mean?" I ask.
"They used me for the popularity ok? Doesn't feel good. I don't wanna talk about it or remember it"
"Ok...we don't gotta" I say
"What else does this girl like? Is she nice? Is this gonna end like it did with Sylvia "
"DON'T talk about Sylvia. Don't say her name when it comes to my relationship" I say. I hated hearing her God damn name
"Sorry..." Darry says.
"Whatever it's fine. And yes this girl is nice. She treats people good. She treats me good....she's the only girl who has and I can't lose her because my stupid self can't show I love her"
"You're not stupid for having a hard time showing love. You..." Darry cuts himself off with a sigh, and I could tell he was trying to find a way to word what he was planning on saying.
"People who didn't really grow up with love have a hard time showing other people that they love them because you weren't shown it. It's normal, more than you think. Even with me, I grew up with the most loving people ever but have a hard time showing love because I don't have a parental figure to love me anymore. Working two jobs, raising my brothers and my sister and looking after you boys... Hardened me up a little. You know?" Darry rambled looking at his feet.
"Darry I'm real sorry, you shouldn't have to go through that" I say
"Ha! There it is! You can comfort people! You have sympathy! That's great, that's how you show love!" Darry says, snapping his fingers at me and pointing.
"But just because I got you to show all that, doesn't mean what I said was a lie. But I don't want you worrying ok?" He adds
"Yea...I'll try not to worry" I say looking at him. He smiles back
"Do you have amy other questions?" Darry asks.
"How do I comfort a girl? It's different than comforting a guy" I ask
"Hug her, pull her head into your chest and tell it's gonna be ok. Give her advice, but if she seems really upset, just hold her. Ok? And then you can rub her back, grab her tissues if she needs 'em...kiss her. Little pecks, no tongue. Cheeks, lips, hands, arms, forehead, head. Ya know?" Darry explains
"Yea. I think that's it..." I say
"Alright, if anything comes up let me know ok?" Darry says. He smiles kindly at me, and grabs the newspaper and continues to read.
"Yea, I'll tell ya." I say. Just then Y/n walks in the door waving at someone outside.
"Oh hi Dal. I didn't expect you to be over. How are ya?" She asks.
Y/N POV
"Good. You?" Dallas asks.
"Good. I went out with Bella. We did a bit of shopping and grabbed some food" she says sitting on the counter
"Hey! Off the counter you know the rules" Darry says.
"S-sorry" she says hopping down.
"Hey, I didn't mean to be rude I'm sorry. Just....no sitting on the counter" Darry says.
"Don't worry about it" I say. I don't know....I had this feeling that Darry and Dally just had a deep one on one.
"Well, I'm gonna head out." Dallas says. But....then Johnny, Ponyboy, and Sodapop walk in. And then the rest of the gang.
"Then I guess I'm staying" Dallas says. He sits on the couch beside Johnny, and starts talking to him. I walk over to the living room, and sit down on the floor next to Soda.
"What did you boys do today?" I ask my twin brother
"Nothin' much. Work, and then Pony Johnny and I walked around town a little bit. And may or may not have almost gotten jumped. But surprisingly enough we didn't. " He says, looking at me
"Nice...but don't let Darry find out" I say
"Find out what?" Darry says, sitting off to the side of us in his recliner.
"Sodapop almost got jumped" I say
"Yea haha good thing I didn't" Sodapop says putting his elbow in my side.
"Ow!" I say jokingly as I hit Soda's arm
"Ok ok...what did you do today" Sodapop asks, returning the question I asked him a few minutes ago
"I went out with Bella, and then grabbed some food. We did a bit of shopping too" I say
"Did you get anything?"
"Just a little necklace." I say
"Cool" Sodapop says.
DALLAS'S POV
Sometimes I really wish someone knew about Y/n and I. It was getting hard to keep the secret and to be honest I don't even know why we wanted it to be a secret. Maybe because Darry wanted Y/n to have a nice boyfriend, not some JD and a hood. I see her having a good time laughing with her twin, laughing with the gang. But she never laughs with me when they're around. It doesn't make a guy feel too good. It makes it a little harder to show her love because we're always around them...

BIOGRAPHY
A fresh start to her life is what she needed. But unfortunately, that’s not what happened. Dallas wanted to give up her life as a drug dealer and finally get sober but after all the withdrawals and financial struggles, she gave up the clean life in place of bringing back what she knows best. The very first person she met in this city was one of the biggest dealers in the city. He made a pretty good deal with her to help her stay afloat. A kind gesture that Dallas was sure to give back to.
Rewind to her previous hometown. She was well known to make good deals with her “clients” so long as they have a believable story. It’s certain that Dallas is the definition of gullible. Any sob story could make her heart wrench and break for the person. Dallas has always held sympathy and empathy in her heart. There’s not a single bone in her body that could cause harm to anyone. Intentionally, that is. What she hasn’t considered is the possible overdoses she could bring with the shit she sells. But knowing her, she doesn’t think that far ahead, trusting that people know what they’re doing with what she’s bringing to the table. Dallas would hate herself if what she sold to someone either hospitalized or killed them. That would be something she’d never forgive herself for.
Dallas has been an anxious mess since she could remember. And her only coping mechanisms are smoking until her lungs feel like they’re on fire, curling up in her oversized beanbag chair, or getting as high as possible. She simply does not and will not handle any type of anxiety well. Whether it’s social or general. She tends to get too wrapped up in her head to think clearly. She can be either out of the house for the whole day and night partying and working or she’s stuck at home trying to contain herself. It’s really so surprise her girlfriend called her “the most boring person”; at least, that’s what she believes. Dallas is an adventurous soul that just wants to be out and about with others, unknowing to her is craving physical touch. Mallory starved her of any basic kindness and physical touch by the end of their relationship. Don’t be surprised if Dallas leans into any touch given to her or simply freezes, fearing that she doesn’t deserve that kindness.

Storia Di Musica #154 - Primal Scream, Screamadelica, 1991

Part 3
Part 4/?
Part 5
With Putunia out of his view, Habit wanted to turn around. Look after her as she ran as if that would give him any answers to all the questions appearing inside his head.
Read the rest of the fic under the cut!
He still remembered the day she got checked in by her parents. She was very loud and violent. Jumping around his office as soon as she entered, not even sparing him a glance.
So rude! He wasn’t looking forward on having to handle her at the time.
At least she seemed to appreciate his wall art. He liked it when his creations got acknowledged and fawned over. It caused him to feel a sense of accomplishment. Throughout his life he learned to cherish the little things. They kept him going. Pushing him forward when nothing and no one else did.
As he started talking with her parents, something felt oddly familiar. It scratched at the back of his head like a caged wild cat trying to escape its small prison. He didn’t let it show. He just answered all their questions. They had so many it was almost making head hurt. Most of them were just silly, even in his less-than-sane opinion.
Is it really free? Is it legal? We don’t have to come to check up on her until the very end, right? Could you provide a free ride for her to get back home?
At some point he stopped paying attention to the parents’ blabbering and just kept nodding, while looking at the little girl still engrossed in the paintings. He hoped he could get the parents out of his hair soon. He really wanted the mind-scratching to go away.
Once the parents seemed satisfied with everything, they called Putunia over. Habit was still looking at her, not sure if feeling delight to meet his newest Habitician or something akin to annoyance.
Not even a second later, he decided it was annoyance. As soon as Putunia set her eyes on him she, for some reason unbeknownst to him, decided that he was a super villain. He was taken by surprise when she sprinted towards him only to punch him where she really shouldn’t have. Not even a man built like Boris could keep standing after that.
Once he was done dealing with the pain on the floor he ushered the father away even if he was trying to help him. Boris stood up, trying to contain his annoyance at the whole situation. He wished he had Pabit here with him right now. He was sure he could’ve stayed calm with him on his hand.
As he was about to take a few deep breaths, maybe count backwards from ten, he saw what was going on. Putunia standing straight and tense with her eyes closed so hard her whole face was wrinkled, her mother raising her hand above her head-
Suddenly, he knew what the scratch in his mind was. It was abruptly so obvious. So painful. So familiar.
He saw a much younger Boris, his father, and his Lily. They were standing in front of him. He was frozen still. It took him only a blink to get back to reality. See the little girl, her mother, and her boxing glove.
His body moved on its own. It felt like he had no control over it. He grabbed the mother’s raised hand in a flash, maybe a bit harshly at first, but he let go just as fast. Thankfully, it seemed to get the point across.
Don’t hit her.
He remembered being in a bit of a shock for a while, his voice completely lost to him. That’s when he drew the first anti-violence poster, or rather, post-it note.
He didn’t do many things right in his life but, he thinks, that’s the one thing he didn’t screw up.
His reminiscing got put to a halt when, immediately after the little girl was out of sight, a man with bright pink spectacles appeared before him.
It was Dallas, the painter. The first thing he noticed were the paint stains on him. He was always messy when it came to painting. Different colors were smudged on him every day. You could almost tell what he was painting just by looking at those.
Then, looking up, he noticed a snowdrop hanging above Dallas, stuck behind his headband. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from it for a while.
Purity, innocence, sympathy… That’s what the flower meant. Though, somehow, that didn’t sound right.
After burying the Tooth Lily seeds, he didn’t have anything to do with flowers anymore. He avoided them for so many years. It was easier ignoring what his heart yearned for that way. Only once he was brought out of his manic state by Flower Kid did he allow his mind to wonder about flowers, study them, and appreciate them.
He had to think harder. What does a snowdrop mean?
A hand casually put onto his shoulder broke his train of thought.
Boris finally looked down, away from the flower and towards Dallas. The younger man put his other arms onto the table, and leaned his head on his hand. The relaxed smile plastered onto his face made Boris feel calm. It’s like his smile was telling him-
“Don’t worry, dude.” Dragging out the words like he usually did. “All’s cool.” He took off his glasses, hooked them onto the low collar of his shirt leaned closer. His smile turning a bit more devilish.
Habit could feel his breath now. As seconds passed he got more and more flustered at their proximity. His heart skipped a beat in anticipation as Dallas closed his eyes, puckered his lips, and sent a kiss to Boris.
Boris wasn’t sure how to react. Another kiss, just for him! Blushing, he opened his mouth to say something, he wasn’t sure what but he needed to fill the silence. It was simply too much!
Dallas didn’t let him get even a squeak out before he removed the snowdrop from his headband and tucked it behind Habit’s ear next to the other two flowers.
He gave Habit another pat on the shoulder, “You can, like, relax now.” And continued on the same path as Putunia.
Ah, he remembered the meaning now.
-----
When Dallas came across the Habitat website during his art block he thought he found his solution. The page was totally inspirational. Like, the bold colors, the doodles, the everything! It really didn’t take him long to pack up his art supplies and make his way there.
Even before entering the Habitat, when looking at the whole area, he was itching for a brush. The whole resort was an art project, if you ask him. Especially the weirdly shaped tower. Honestly that one looked ready to collapse at any moment, but he was no architect, he’s sure it’s fine.
When he entered the place he was getting a bit giddy seeing all the wall art. Could his art block, like, really end here? Is this the inspiration he needed?
Wanting to soak in as much of the view as possible in as little time as possible, he jogged around the place. The more he explored the calmer he got. It was a big place. A unique place. And the whole experience could be an inspiration by itself. The giant wall doodles were also nice, but it wasn’t quite cutting it. Something was missing. He wanted something more.
Should he really stay here? He wasn’t sure anymore.
Not having time to think his decision trough, someone grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around, using enough strength to not give him room to resist.
The person responsible was like, super tall, very green, and kinda pretty. Taking in the comically fluffy hair, giant blue coat, and little top hat on top of his head, he put two and two together.
“Whazzup, Doc?” He made a little peace sign, as if it added to the conversation.
The doctor tilted his head, seemingly waiting for some elaboration from Dallas.
Okay, maybe it was like, totally weird to come in unannounced and then wander around for who knows how long, instead of going to the medical professional running the place. But who can blame him? He’s an artist in need of motivation!
“So, like, I want in.” Does he, really? “Into the Habitat, dude.” Guess so.
The tall guy instantly perked up, hooked his hand around Dallas’ own, and dragged him towards the tower.
“Oh, then follow me!” He was already dragging him places, but okay, got’cha. “You will love it here!”
Dope, he sounds genuine. It’ll be, like, fine.
It’s been so long since that day.
Besides his first week there, he barely saw Habit around. Eventually, he forgot about him. Well, kind of. There were so many self-portraits and doodles decorating the Habitat it was hard to keep him completely out of mind. Only towards the end of his stay, when the creepy PSAs of his started playing every night, did Habit start lingering in his mind for longer periods, rather than just quick and easily forgettable reminders.
He wasn’t sure what exactly went on with Habit behind the scenes, but it didn’t seem very… chill. He might’ve been a bit dense, but not blind.
In the end, he ended up hearing about the events that transpired during the big event from others.
Maybe it was the fact he hadn’t experienced any of the bad stuff directly. Maybe it was the fact he’s a criminally chill dude. Or maybe it was the fact that Habit was genuinely remorseful about his actions, by the tone of the letter, even desperate. Whatever the reason, it didn’t take him long to make up his mind and accept the Doc’s invitation.
He even thought of the perfect gift to bring him, to celebrate his new beginning. Something representing hope.
A snowdrop.

He Knew He Fucked Up- Part 7
I hope you enjoy reading this!
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Series Update, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
~~~~~
Since the talk with Tyler the seed had been planted and he became more and more open to the idea of using Joanne's services only for the purchase of the new house, and be guilt free when asking her out later. However every time he winded up thinking about it, it made him feel like a shallow person who use loopholes in order to harass someone who somewhat works for him. In result of that guilty feeling at the pit of his stomach, he decided to talk about the situation with Darth sometime during the Christmas break. His older brother knew him well enough to give good advice, yet live far enough on a regular basis, so he was able to give an objective opinion.
Once he knew that he wanted to talk it through with Jordie he was impatient and eager to go on with it. However he still had a bit of a common sense left, and realized by himself that he can't steal Jordie right away from their family while they wanted to catch up with the both of them. What he ended up settle on was that their first day would be with the family, and on their second day back home he would get the chance to have a little one on one chat with Jordie. When he sensed an opportunity for their talk (when their mom went for a nap and their dad was at work) he just led Jordie to his childhood bedroom. He was hesitant for like two seconds about how to start off the conversation. Yet apparently it was one second too late, because Darth already started talking.
"Chubbs, before you die out of self-doubt I would like to say that I agree with Tyler. If you like her and no longer hires her, then you do nothing wrong with just asking her out. She could always say no, and you are gentleman enough to know that no means no. So I don't see any harm in it".
When Darth stopped talking he looked expectedly at his younger brother, waiting for an answer or some sort of typical lecture of Jamie's set of codes. Yet, Jamie was too busy processing the fact that Tyler kept his older brother posted. At last he came up with the articulated response of "You knew about my situation in Dallas?"
To that he heard a familiar voice, that he may or may not was too fond of, saying "What, about your crash on Joanne the realtor? Yeah, Segs gave me a heads up for an incoming heart-to-heart talk over the Christmas break".
After hearing that, his insides filled with happiness from how his bros were looking out for him. However he tried to push it away, just for a few seconds, in order to press Jordie for his real advice on the situation. His brother saw how much he counted on this answer so Jordie gave him a much more serious answer.
"Honestly, I haven't met her yet, but from what I heard about her from you and Seggy I approve. Furthermore, I know that after what happened with Julie you were a mess. And the incident over the summer hadn't helped.
But, you are better now, and things between Tyler and you are better now. There's no reason for you to keep punishing yourself. You are allowed to be happy".
Jamie felt so much better after hearing his brother's advice. Now he knew for sure that he would ask her out after the house buying process would be behind them. Once he told Jordie his final verdict he was sure that they could stray to another subject, like their seasons thus far, however he stopped when he spotted Jordie's worried face. He asked tentatively what matter was, once it was clear that Jordie wasn't going to explain himself.
Even after the question it took eternity for his brother to answer. However at last he answered with a simple "What did you say her last name was?"
Jamie was expecting some major bad news, so the question kind of landed out of left field. It took him a few speculative seconds of trying to figure out the question's motive before answering "River, Joanne River. Why?"
Jordie didn't acknowledge the question. He just started firing off a set of confusing and ridiculous questions such as "Is she sarcastic and judgmental?" Throughout the interrogation Darth remained with the same seriousness, even becoming bleaker looking as the time passed. As it exceeded from one or two question to an impressive amount of questions Jamie became more and more worried, trying to think of some reasonable explanations as to why this barrage of questions were even subjected to him. Finally he came up with the theory that Jordie met Joanne before, prior to the trade, and tried to confirm that indeed it was the same woman before warning him about her. This theory made the most sense, so he went along with it, trusting Jordie to finally tell him what was wrong. Only with the question of "Is she a bit of a fashionista?" he started to suspect what the gig was about.
"Did you just imply that my realtor is the same person as the comedian from 'The Fashion Police'?"
With that Jordie got his que and started laughing so loud that Jamie was worried he'd wake their mom from her nap. He didn't want Jordie to feel validated about his unfunny prank, so he just started to wait him out. Only he really under estimated his brother because not only was he still laughing a full minute after, but now he was also crying out of laughter. And that was his limit and what pushed him to fire up an angry "Could you stop being a dick?!" at his brother.
For a moment it felt like it made his situation worse, but then Jordie wiped his eyes away the tears and actually looked at Jamie and actually redeemed himself by stopping with the laugh. Once he stopped with the laughing he still had a big smile on his face, almost like he was egging him to start laughing as well. Jamie then on principle decided not to laugh (it would only encourage Jordie to continue with pranks like that in the future). From then on they started a staring contest, with neither of them willing to admit defeat. Eventually, after what felt like century, Jordie started talking (which meant that Jamie totally won the battle).
"I'm sorry, okay? It just accord to me that her name is awfully close to the name of Joan Rivers, the comedian, so I decided to have some fun. And if you weren't lame unlike me, you would have appreciated my joke".
Jamie was still a bit frustrated, yet he wasn't that angry anymore so he decided to throw his brother a bone.
"It would have been funnier if it weren't right after me asking you on whether I should ask her out or not. I for sure thought that you remembered like an encounter you had with her when you lived in Dallas. I was ready to hear how she was a horrible person and I should run for my life or something along those lines".
With that Jordie showed more sympathy and had a rueful smile. Then he just gave him an apologetically bro hug. Of course Jamie took it as the appropriate apology and from there they just took the conversation to another path. From than Jamie got his decisive answer and knew what was the game plan for his return to Dallas. Since the conversation he just laid back and exploited the quick vacation as much as he could.
+++
When he got back to Dallas he felt refreshed and relaxed, ready to the second half of the season. He was also ready for another round of house hunting with Joanne. He told her beforehand the dates in which he would be at Canada, for the Christmas break, fully expecting her to take a break as well. However she obviously hadn't taken the break because as he was back in Dallas, getting ready for their short trip to Minnesota, she sent him a full list of no less than ten new places to check. He was shocked and felt guilty about the off chance that maybe she thought that he expected her to work while he was gone. After a full minute of him considering with himself what to do, he finally decided to review the houses.
He was aware that they had been for quite some time at that process, so he was not that surprised to see that on paper every single one of the houses was perfected to his set of expectations. After reviewing one last time every house she sent him info about he shot her an email where first of all he thanked her dedication and her time to still work on the house search during the holiday break and second of all his affirmation that every single house she sent him he would like to check first hand. After that Joanne just sent him a schedule for the next few days, with an expectation of his approval.
+++
As they first stepped into this particular house he knew that it was different from all the other options and previous houses he stepped in. it was a two stories, six bedroom house, and a basement, which was really nice with hardwood floors. But what really sold him about this house as opposed to all the previous options was the back yard. It was a big yard that as oppose to the pool that so many different places offer, this place had this big field full of flowers, vegetables and spices. Something about this field just fascinated him and when he asked Joanne about it she explained to him that the previous owner was a botanic who enjoyed growing his own food. He was still mesmerized and speechless with the field that Joanne started to reassure him that they could get rid of it if he indeed purchases this house. That remark took him out of his thoughts quickly and he assured her that the field is not a problem. After that he asked for another tour inside the house. At the end of the tour he was sure of himself- he wanted to live here.
The tour of the house was just before the bi-week, so it worked out lovely that they had a full week where he was fully available for any back and forth with the previous owner. And by the end of the bi-week he was the proud owner of a new home. During that said week he also did a thorough research on what it entailed to grow your vegetables and spices. Because he never thought of himself as an organic fanatic, unlike different captain of NHL teams, but as part of his plan to change a bit and become a better person he could see himself devote to that. Plus, it is a nice challenge that he could see himself winning at the end.
Once he got from Joanne the keys to his new house and the phone number of a realtor that Joanne recommended him with regard of selling the previous house he owned, he felt like it was truly possible to check where Joanne stood. He took a deep breath and stammered a long speech (much longer than he planned originally) about how he started to like her and how he would like to take her out on a date considering that they longer under professional relations. At the end of the speech he was mortified about the amount of silliness that came out of his mouth, as well as the number of details that he was pretty sure made him look and sound like a total creep.
He was too caught up in his self-hatred that he almost missed completely Joanne's positive answer. It took him a few seconds to realized what her answer was, and then he just shot her an incredulous "Are you sure?" that she just laughed to and once again told him how she was sure and was interested in giving him a chance. Jamie was pretty much on cloud nine so he was all smiles as Joanne gave him her personal cellphone number while telling him to give her a call. After that she left him alone to enjoy his new house, and he was grateful for the fact that that was the only one to see his embarrassing celebration at the entry of his new house.
+++
With the season starting back again, his process of moving out to his new house, and Joanne's packed schedules, the date of their first date was scheduled towards the end of the month. So in the meantime he just basked in the moment. They had more wins than loses thus far this month so he felt good. Plus, he once again cashed his invitation to one of Tyler and Emma meals. It was the second time that he went to Tyler's house for a meal, however this time he was finally the only guest and he didn't get to share the meal with another teammate. He was especially grateful for that because he had a lot of recent events that he wanted to share with Tyler and also he didn't want an audience for him thanking Tyler for sticking up for him.
During said dinner, which was surprisingly tasty considered the fact that most of the food was done by Segs, they first chatted on the season and what they needed to do to improve their performance. But from there on it pretty much evolved to a chat about Jamie's escapades from the last few weeks (they both wished him luck on the fast approaching date). After they stopped talking about Jamie, Tyler and Emma's (though it was really Emma's) turn was on. Emma told him about her new job and how she was still adjusting to Dallas (yet she did admit her growing fondness for Dallas). After that she told him how they celebrated Christmas and what she did during the All-Star Week.
At the beginning Jamie wasn't sure what exactly the deal between the two of them was or what to think of Emma. However as the season progressed, he the rest of the team saw more of Emma and got to know her better (greatly because of those said meals). And that was how they found out about her being a total sweetheart and ridiculously way too good for Tyler. Yet, they were good together, and it was kind of obvious why they were together. Of course Tyler was still a jerk and never told them that he and Emma were dating and together. Yet, considering what he put them through over the summer, they didn’t really push him to talk about it and gave him a bit of a slack.
The rest of dinner was nice and they followed it up with a movie. By the time he went home, it was much later then he expected and he was pretty much out the second he laid his head on his pillow.
+++
On the day of their first day he woke up with a nervous energy. It was a day of morning skate followed by conditioning at the gym, so he tried to exhaust himself onto relaxation. It didn't really work, yet he did get compliments from Coach and various teammates on being a beast today. So once he got back home he spent the next few hours just relaxing while trying to boost his self-esteem. By the time he drove over to her place to pick her up to the restaurant he made a reservation at, he was pretty confident that tonight would turn out okay.
Pretty much from the get go it did. Joanne was stunning in a beautiful black dress so he was quick to compliment her. She blushed in response and told him he looked nice also. The car ride wasn't long and before they knew it they approached the restaurant. But more importantly there wasn't a second of silence. A few seconds after him picking her up she asked him about whether he phoned the realtor that she recommended him and that opened their conversation. As they were led to their table they still talked about that subject.
It was a nice place that from various teammates' recommendations he knew it was supposed to be real romantic. Once he was there himself he was really impressed by how nice the place was. They spent a few quiet minutes while scanning the menu and ordering their food. The restaurant itself mostly served Italian food, so he took ravioli while Joanne took lasagna. Once the waiter took their order they pretty quickly resumed talking.
They started with basic first date talk- where are they from originally and talks about their family. Jamie was surprised to find out that Joanne was born and raised in Dallas and her family was still living in Dallas as well. When he talked to her about his upbringing in Victoria she confessed to him about how she never left the country, and that just led to more talk about family vacations and dream destinations places.
When the conversation of their professions came up Jamie talked first about how it was being a professional hockey player. Plus, Joanne told him that she didn't really know how the game worked ("I grew up in Texas, so shut up") so he then just had to teach her the basics of the game. Throughout the conversation it was obvious that Joanne was willing to learn, so he was optimistic.
Once they started to focus on her job the conversation didn't die to one bit. At first Jamie asked her how she got to that business, and then from that point on she just gave him an in-depth insider on what entailed in being a realtor. Jamie liked how charismatic Joanne got once she was on a roll. With a loll in the conversation he asked curiously "What is your favorite part on the job?"
To that Joanne just watched him for a minute before she answered with a teasing comment of "You sure you want to know?"
Jamie honestly didn't care if she would start talking about the most disgusting thing in the whole world. So with what he hope would be an earnest face just nodded encouragingly. To that Joanne just nodded in an affirmative matter, took a long sip of her wine and started to answer.
"Okay, since you insisted I'm going to tell you. However, first you need a little background. I assume that you know in what realtor company I work for, considering the fact that you just used my services".
Joanne looked at him with expectant look, obviously waiting for an answer. That was why he hurried to reassure her that he was aware of the company she worked for. Once she saw his affirmative face she started to talk again.
"Well, so originally Laviston Realtor Company started with two brothers. They started the company together in the 70's. Since then the company grew and grew to the point that the company is currently one of the main realtor companies in all of the U.S. So the company has a large number of branches if it wasn't clear, and every year the company throws a seminar to a large number of their employees. The seminar is four days long, and every year a different branch is the host. They have technically two seminars- one for the north states and one for the south states. And like every branch sent four employees, mostly from different positions, to attend the seminar. The hosting branch gets to present their accomplishments from the past year.
Anyway, so like two years ago was the first time that I was one of the four employees out of the Dallas branch. I was so excited to go to the seminar. And let me tell you, it was really fun. It pretty much consists on lectures all day long. But only the bare minimum is work related and the rest are lectures for fun about verity of different subjects. Plus you get to travel said city after the seminar ends for the day. We were staying at a local hotel at the city and there were so many people at the seminar. I got to befriend some of them and I still talk to the majority of them till this day."
Throughout her speech she wore such a wide smile he was sure it would split her face to two. So he followed it up with "You got to go to another seminar?"
To that Joanne was quick to say "Actually this year the hosting branch is our branch, so my second would be in little less than a month. The hosting branch gets to send six employees, so I am one of them. But what would be different this year is that I was chosen out of the branch to present ourselves on the stage. I seriously can't wait for it, yet I have to be honest and admit that I am a bit nervous".
To that Jamie was quick to respond with a reassuring "I'm sure you would be great. There was a reason why they chose you to represent the branch's accomplishment out of all the other employees".
Before they could get to a different subject the waiter came to clear their dishes that were long gone and he gave them the dessert menu. With Jamie being a professional athlete and all, they settled on a shared relatively healthy desert.
Once they finished the desert they asked for the check and left the restaurant. The following day was a game day for Jamie, meaning a morning skate, so they kind of hopped in the car relatively quickly. During the drive to Joanne's place there wasn't much talking, but it wasn't an awkward silence kind of thing. It was rather a content silence kind of thing. Once they got to Joanne's home he parked his car and chaperoned her to the door. At the front steps of her house he told her honestly "I had a good time tonight. Would you be interested in going on a second date with me?"
Joanne was quick to respond with a shy "I had a great time too. And yes, I would like to go on a second date".
Jamie smiled a little and then he just gave Joanne a chaste kiss on her cheek. When he stepped back he watched how Joanne said a final goodbye and went inside her house. He stalled for a second, before he turned around and began striding back to his car. He had the broadest smile he ever had, and went inside his car filled with great hopes for the future.
Heavy J2-Tinhat content ahead with a focus on Jared & Genevieve’s wedding but with mentions of both weddings.
Turn back NOW please if you know that reading this will upset you!
Thanks!
*********
First, a quick overview of the dates and locations of both weddings:
Jared & Genevieve: The Valley Country Club (Sun Valley, Idaho), 2/27/10
Jensen & Danneel: Crescent Court Hotel (Dallas, Texas), 5/15/10
So, even just based on that tiny bit of info alone, it’s already weird that neither J was married in a church despite religion playing a role in both of their respective families (especially in the Ackles family).
Also, neither marriage was blessed by a priest.
A bit strange...right? *ponders*
Another interesting fact: Jensen was alone at Jared’s wedding (without Danneel), and Jared was likewise alone at Jensen’s wedding (without Gen).
*********
But, anyway, moving on to the main point of this particular post: a few extra tidbits about Jared & Genevieve’s wedding that I haven’t talked about yet.
I have things to add about Jen & Dan’s wedding as well, but I’ll save that for another time.
1. There were two wedding cakes! Which definitely caught my attention, because that’s...pretty odd without the reason being some dietary restriction someone in the wedding party has or something like that. But no....even then it would still be a very unusual thing to do.
Here’s the cake that was cut by him and Gen:
The second was baked in the shape of Texas and was also colored accordingly (I’ll re-find and add a pic).
Which two people constantly bond over a deep, shared love of Texas, though? A love of Texas that also happened to play a huge role in kickstarting their relationship with each other wayyy back in the beginning?
I mean, I don’t know. Just sayin.
2. Jared and Genevieve messed up their wedding kiss and had to try it again to ‘get it right.’
Hmm...
(since this is the second try, it’s VERY hard to imagine what the first try was like...)
3. The flowers chosen for the ceremony were white lilies, a particular kind that are very commonly associated with funerals, death, and mourning. So commonly, in fact, that when I did some verifying research, it was the first-used description of the flower’s symbolism on all but one or two of the sites I browsed (the only description on some of those sites), and when I tweaked my search to “funeral flowers,” it was the first flower listed on every single page I visited as recommended for funerals, mourning, and sending in sympathy to grieving loved ones.
A collage of various text-clips from some of those sites, just to give you a general idea:
*********
So, make what you will of that. Or don’t!
4. The set-up/decor of the ceremony, right down to the specific lights, was borrowed from a show called Wildfire (from the wedding scene) that Genevieve acted in.
Now, I don’t know what I’m trying to imply that might mean...but I do know it feels like a weird, impersonal thing to do...
Doesn’t it? 🧐
5. Jared and Gen did not initially go on a Honeymoon. Jared was spotted flying right back to Vancouver the Monday after the wedding. The two did take their supposed ‘honeymoon’ later on.
My thoughts? Jared, as we know, struggles with anxiety and depression. Getting through the faux-wedding with a smile (wellll...he tried his best to smile anyway...*see below image*) was already hard enough in more ways than we could probably ever imagine. A faux-honeymoon immediately afterward would have just been way too emotionally and mentally difficult.
I’ll leave you with these photos of Jensen during Jared’s rehearsal dinner:
And this wedding hug between the two of them that continues to break my heart into a thousand pieces every time I see it:
RECENSIONE: Vampire Weekend - Father Of The Bride (Spring Snow / Columbia, 2019)
A sei anni di distanza dall’ultimo disco, Modern Vampires Of The City, gli eclettici e spensierati Vampire Weekend ritornano in scena dopo essere stati tanto attesi col quarto Father Of The Bride, un album strabordante d’idee, indisciplinato ed alquanto audace. Un azzardo, ad iniziare dai diciotto brani per un’ora di musica - in un periodo in cui la sintesi si è spesso rivelata corretta per la riuscita di un buon disco - e a finire con la diversità stilistica esplorata in ogni brano, studiata apposta per rivelare la matrice naif e giocosa che sottintende l'intera parabola della band.
Serve molto tempo per diventare giovani, diceva Pablo Picasso. Lui, del resto, non era che un eterno fanciullo che aveva imparato ben presto ad assecondare la propria indole per trasformarla in un grande affresco di arte e di vita. L'aforisma torna buono per dipingere una figura come quella di Ezra Koenig, il ragazzo prodigio dell'indie-pop americano che sembra proprio non voler scendere a patti con l'età adulta. Non in musica, almeno. La verità è che sono passati ben dieci anni dal loro debutto, ma l’anima sbarazzina e giovane dei Vampire Weekend non sembra essere stata scalfita.
L’uscita di Rostam Batmanglij dalla band, che comunque continua a collaborare qua e là all’interno dell’album, ne ha in primo luogo ritardato la pubblicazione ed in secondo ha permesso a Koening di andare a ruota libera senza che i suoi eccessi venissero stemperati da qualcuno. La sensazione è che abbia imparato a giocare da solo - nonostante siano rimasti in tre. Se prima i Vampire Weekend apparivano come un’entità unica che si muoveva all’unisono, con Father Of The Bride sembra che il leader sia uscito in avanscoperta a livello di scrittura, per poi attorniarsi di strumenti e compagni d’avventura stabili ed occasionali. Per la prima volta nella loro discografia ci sono, infatti, tanti ospiti: Danielle Haim delle Haim è accreditata formalmente in tre brani, Steve Lacy dei The Internet in due, Mark Ronson ha collaborato alla scrittura di uno e tantissimi altri hanno messo mano alla produzione.
L’ambizione di Koening l’ha portato a realizzare un disco dalle caratteristiche difficilmente identificabili come positive o negative. Father Of The Bride è frammentario ed irregolare, un gioco continuo di copia e incolla, ora organico ora elettronico e dai cambi di stile continui. Ci sono i campionamenti che vanno da Hans Zimmer fino al duo elettronico giapponese Haruomi Hosono. Un momento prima sembrano essere un grande punto di forza, quello dopo il più grande difetto, in poche parole è imprevedibile - forse proprio per rispecchiare l’indole di un bambino. Di certo, deve essere assimilato e metabolizzato con pazienza. La band dimostra di conoscere le nozioni giuste per costruire le fondamenta di canzoni pop sulle quali si possono ergere case con pareti dipinte da infinite sfumature cromatiche. Però non sempre sembrano edifici finiti, perché molte canzoni sfiorano appena i due minuti - se non meno - risultando bozze incomplete. D’altra parte, è soprattutto per questo che diventa un disco enciclopedico, sicuramente rallentando la narrazione che alla fine rimane striminzita in un piccolo scorcio della sfera romantica alla quale si aggiungono sfuggenti dosi di riferimenti religiosi e politici difficili da collocare nel contesto, ma non cadendo nel banale almeno musicalmente.
Anche la stessa traccia d’apertura, Hold You Now, dura due minuti e mezzo ed inizia coi sapori country di un semplice arpeggio di chitarra acustica sul quale Koening canta, ma dopo il primo minuto si interrompe per ricominciare come accompagnamento su un coro gospel che a sua volta viene presto tagliato con delle distorsioni che ricordano un qualcosa che si inceppa, seguite dall’entrata di Danielle Haim che si occuperà di cantare il resto della canzone. C’è un punto in cui si sente la voce del frontman dopo aver finito di registrare la prima sezione in studio che vorrebbe dare un senso d’intimità, come se fosse un disco rustico e poco post-prodotto, ma alla fine è un piccolo particolare che risulta comunque forzato; la produzione è pulitissima e, di certo, non si tratta un disco lo-fi: sarebbe molto insolito dato che stiamo sentendo un prodotto orgogliosamente marchiato Sony a caratteri cubitali sulla copertina. Harmony Hall è il primo singolo, apprezzabile in tutti i suoi aspetti quali produzione, strumentale tutta piano, chitarre ed allestimento barocco correlato che creano un’atmosfera davvero particolare, ed infine testo che è uno dei meglio scritti dell’intero album, in forte contrasto con l’energia contagiosa e positiva della musica. “I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die” dice nel ritornello sintetizzando in poche parole il sentimento che molti di noi condividono a livello socio-politico in questo periodo.
Poi c’è la breve ma gradevolissima Bambina, orecchiabile e graziosa, esplosiva ed ammiccante con le sue increspature di chitarra elettrica alla quale seguono delle percussioni coinvolgenti; il testo fa riferimento alla violenza vista dal punto di vista di un cristiano, seguace di una religione che dovrebbe condannarla, ma non si capisce bene di che violenza si tratti, se di quella più attuale delle forze dell’ordine o più in senso lato: in ogni caso, l’ambientazione italiana del titolo è piuttosto strana. This Life è la più familiare nel repertorio della band, con quella chitarra così come li abbiamo conosciuti, eternamente soleggiata e pop a pieni polmoni, affronta con innocenza d’animo alcune problematiche legate al mondo degli adulti. Big Blue, invece, è un’altra piccola avventura estranea alle abitudini, più introspettiva, fa uso di distorsioni per le voci e lascia la strumentale semplice con l’organicità di qualche chitarra acustica, resa più onirica dal campionamento di alcuni cori e dei sintetizzatori sul finale. Unbearably White è meno politica o provocatoria di quanto possa sembrare dal titolo, utilizzando il bianco più come la metafora di uno stato d’animo vissuto nel momento in cui si ci trova in una relazione d’amore appassita; musicalmente è tranquilla, ma credo sia una delle più complete del disco ed è molto bello il finale con le voci che si sovrappongono. My Mistake, completamente diversa da qualsiasi altra cosa, è stata prodotta con Ludwig Göransson - solitamente a lavoro con artisti che prediligono l’rnb e l’hip-hop dai sapori jazz - e se considerata al di fuori di tutto è una ballata elegante e carina metà al piano e metà chitarra acustica con aggiunta di sassofoni. Ma se questo brano è stato inaspettato, allora sentite successivo. Sympathy è un azzardo folle inspiegabilmente riuscito che unisce gli scenari musicali più improbabili, un connubio tra flamenco e synth pop sul finale leggermente jazzato, a tratti affollato ed in altri più tenue, in cui Koening ha quell’atteggiamento da rocker che mi fa pensare al frontman dei Cage The Elephant. E’ quasi paradossale sentire ad un certo punto il gioco del contrabbasso sulle pulsazioni del beat sintetico, al quale si aggiungono una specie di conga elettrificata ed i battiti di mano della tradizione catalana, completati dal campionamento di un coro gospel trattato come se fosse la melodia di una traccia club. L’ispirazione del testo è ancora più inaspettata e particolare, in quanto parla di un mondo in cui le alleanze nascono da un risentimento condiviso, concretizzando questo concetto con il cristianesimo e il giudaismo che dopo i cruenti scontri storici si sono coalizzati contro un terzo incomodo, ovvero, l’Islam.
youtube
Non sono piaciuti, invece, i due brani con Lacy, rispettivamente Sunflower e Flower Moon sulle quali avevo riposto le mie aspettative proprio per la collaborazione. Il primo è un’esercizio sottotono in cui i due hanno impiegato tutto il loro interesse per dei vocalizzi su un piccolo virtuosismo di basso fine a se stesso, mentre il secondo è altrettanto piatto e rigido, un animaletto docile che non riesce a farsi spazio in una scaletta di brani in linea generale ugualmente innocui, ma sicuramente più coinvolgenti. Non hanno fatto breccia nel mio cuore neanche i duetti con Danielle Haim di Married in A Gold Rush e We Belong Together che se da un lato sicuramente apprezzabili per l’armonia tra le due voci, dall’altro risultano troppo mielose, anche nella loro ironia, e sembra di aver fatto un salto indietro all’ultimo disco pseudo-country di Kacey Musgraves.
In the United States, right-wing violence is on the rise
In the United States, right-wing violence is on the rise
In the United States, right-wing violence is on the rise The Washington Post 10 hrs ago Wesley Lowery, Kimberly Kindy, Andrew Tran © Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty Images Lorea Stallard (R) and her husband Kyle Parker stand in front of flowers and candles placed below a police cordon outside the Tree of Life Synagogue (back) after a shooting there left 11 people dead in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018. (Photo credit should read BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP/Getty Images) As a Republican, Mitchell Adkins complained of feeling like an outcast at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. “Hardcore liberals” made fun of him, he wrote, and he faced “discrimination on a daily basis.” He soon dropped out and enrolled in trade school. But his simmering rage led him back to campus one morning in April 2017, when Adkins pulled out a machete in the campus coffee shop, demanded that patrons state their political affiliation and began slashing at Democrats. “There was never any ambiguity about why he did it,” said Tristan Reynolds, 22, a witness to the attack, which left two women injured. Over the past decade, attackers motivated by right-wing political ideologies have committed dozens of shootings, bombings and other acts of violence, far more than any other category of domestic extremist, according to a Washington Post analysis of data on global terrorism. While the data show a decades-long drop-off in violence by left-wing groups, violence by white supremacists and other far-right attackers has been on the rise since Barack Obama’s presidency — and has surged since President Trump took office. Subscribe to the Post Most newsletter: Today’s most popular stories on The Washington Post This year has been especially deadly.Just last month, 13 people died in two incidents: A Kentucky gunman attempted to enter a historically black church, police say, then shot and killed two black patrons in a nearby grocery store. And an anti-Semitic loner who had expressed anger about a caravan of Central American refugees that Trump termed an “invasion” has been charged with gunning down 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue, the deadliest act of anti-Semitic violence in U.S. history. © /Andrew Tran;Chiqui Esteban Right wing terrorist attacks in the U.S. This month brought two more bodies: A military veteran who had railed online against women and blacks opened fire in a Tallahassee yoga studio , killing two women and wounding five. All told, researchers say at least 20 people have died this year in suspected right-wing attacks. While Trump has blasted Democrats as “an angry left-wing mob” and the “party of crime,” researchers have identified just one fatal attack in 2018 that may have been motivated by left-wing ideologies. In February, Tierre Guthrie, an ex-Marine who was sympathetic to the far-left Black Nationalist movement, shot and killed a police officer trying to arrest him at his Georgia home for failing to appear in court for a traffic violation. The uptick in right-wing terrorism comes amid a renewed national focus on hate-driven violence. The Anti-Defamation League documented a 57 percent surge in anti-Semitic incidents in 2017, especially at schools and on college campuses. Meanwhile, FBI statistics released this month show reported hate crimes jumped 17 percent last year. Among them was the vehicle attack in August 2017 that killed one person and injured 35 others protesting a rally by white supremacists in Charlottesville. The accused driver, James Alex Fields Jr., 21, faces up to life in prison for multiple charges in a trial set to begin Monday. Terrorism researchers say right-wing violence sprouted alongside white anxiety about Obama’s presidency and has accelerated in the Trump era. Trump and his aides have continuously denied that he has contributed to the rise in violence. But experts say right-wing extremists perceive the president as offering them tacit support for their cause. After the violence in Charlottesville, for example, Trump asserted that “both sides” were equally to blame and that there were “some very fine people” among the far-right demonstrators, many of whom wore “Make America Great Again” caps while chanting racist and anti-Semitic slogans. More recently, Trump rallied crowds in the run-up to the Nov. 6 midterm elections with incendiary rhetoric about Muslims and immigrants, terming a caravan of Central American refugees an “invasion” and ordering active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. “If you have politicians saying things like our nation is under attack, that there are these marauding bands of immigrants coming into the country, that plays into this right-wing narrative. They begin to think it’s okay to use violence,” said Gary LaFree, criminology chairman at the University of Maryland and founding director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, or START. Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI assistant director for counterintelligence, said political leaders, “from the White House down, used to serve as a check on conduct and speech that was abhorrent to most people. I see that eroding.” “The current political rhetoric is at least enabling, and certainly not discouraging, violence,” Figliuzzi said. START maintains the federally funded Global Terrorism Database , the most comprehensive list of terrorist attacks available to the public. The database tracks terroristic incidents in the United States and around the world since 1970, defined as the threatened or actual use of violence by nonstate actors seeking to attain political, economic, religious or social goals through fear or intimidation. Determining motivation is an imperfect science, and many acts of domestic terrorism do not sort neatly along the ideological spectrum. In many cases, such as last year’s shooting at a Las Vegas music festival that left 58 people dead, the motive is unknown. Where motive can be identified, researchers have divided the incidents into about a dozen categories, such as “jihadi-inspired extremists,” “anti-LGBT extremists” and “anti-government extremists.” For recent cases, The Post sorted those categories according to ideology, then refined the data through a case-by-case review. The results show that unlike the turbulent 1970s, when environmental, antiwar and other left-wing groups were responsible for historically high rates of terrorism in the United States, today’s attackers are far more likely to have right-wing sympathies. Of 263 incidents of domestic terrorism between 2010 and the end of 2017, a third — 92 — were committed by right-wing attackers, according to The Post’s analysis. Another third were committed by attackers whose motives were either unknown or not clearly political. Islamist terrorists committed 38 attacks. And left-wing attackers were responsible for 34 attacks — about 13 percent. Among the most deadly left-wing attacks were the 2016 killings of eight police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge by gunmen sympathetic to the Black Lives Matter movement. One of the most prominent was last year’s attack on Republican members of a congressional baseball team , including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La.). The gunman, James Hodgkinson, had raged against Trump online and was a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Joshua D. Freilich, a criminologist at John Jay College and co-director of the Extremist Crime Database, an open-source database of violent and financial crimes committed by political extremists, said that right-wing attacks not only happen more often but also are more likely to result in fatalities than left-wing attacks. Stacey Hervey, a criminologist at the Metropolitan State University of Denver who has studied radicalization, said the attackers generally fit one of three archetypes: thrill-seekers, such as teenagers who paint swastikas on the sides of buildings; reactive attackers, who lash out suddenly at perceived enemies; and mission-oriented attackers, who aim to send a specific message or achieve a certain political goal. Adkins, who pleaded guilty this month to the machete attack in Transylvania University’s Jazzmans Cafe, falls into the reactive category. In a 2015 letter to the student newspaper, Adkins wrote that “being a Republican in this school makes me such a minority that I’ve had to face discrimination on a daily basis.” Online, he later complained about “hardcore liberals” and announced that he had dropped out of college because “the constant bullying and lack of friends drove me to an overdose, a trip to the hospital and two trips to the mental hospital.” Prosecutors and Adkins’s attorney declined to comment on the case. Adkins’s mother, Amy, said her son is filled with “remorse and sorrow.” She believes that he was driven less by his conservative views than by feelings of marginalization and disrespect. “It’s not a question of being right-wing,” she said. “It’s a question of feeling that you’re required to give credence to what people believe, but they aren’t required to give you the same respect, regardless of what the issue is.” As a result of the attack, Transylvania President Seamus Carey said the 1,100-student campus has adopted civility as its theme this year. But Carey said it can be hard for students to be civil when society has grown so coarse. When political and religious institutions “lose their moral authority,” Carey said, “all the people who relied on that can feel a little lost.” Even more menacing, Hervey said, are the mission-oriented attacks. The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting was the deadliest act of anti-Semitic terror in the United States since an April 2014 shooting rampage by Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., a former KKK member and white supremacist who has been sentenced to die for killing three people at a Jewish Community Center and a Jewish retirement home in suburban Kansas City, Kan. Among the dead — none of them Jewish — were William Corporon, 69, and his grandson, Reat Underwood, 14. Since losing her father and her son, Corporon’s daughter, Mindy Corporon, has focused on spreading messages of kindness. She was getting ready to board a flight from Orlando to Dallas when she got a text message about the Pittsburgh shooting. “I was just overwhelmed with sadness. I didn’t make it to Dallas,” she said. “I’ve realized that there are people who are touched by evil.” More recently, members of a tiny right-wing militia group came to the attention of police in connection with two acts of terror in 2017, including a pipe bomb thrown through the window of a women’s health clinic in Champaign, Ill., last November. That bomb did not go off, but a few months earlier, one did: In August, a pipe bomb crashed through the window of the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Bloomington, Minn., and exploded a few yards from five people gathered for early morning prayers. Police arrested members of the White Rabbit 3 Percent Illinois Patriot Freedom Fighters Militia, an anti-government group that issues its own currency and has published a handbook that calls for a return to “the good old days” and “Our Old America,” according to an investigation by Chicago’s ABC 7 Eyewitness News . One of the group’s members, Michael McWhorter, 29, told FBI agents that the mosque bombing was not intended to kill anyone but to “scare them out of the country,” to “show them, hey, you’re not welcome here, get the f— out,” according to court records. No one was injured in the bombing. But Mohamed Omar, the Islamic center’s executive director, said it shattered his belief that, in America, he and his family would be safe. “I was born in Somalia, a war-torn country, and ran 8,000 miles to get away from bombs,” Omar said. “I never thought that I would be bombed in America. My wife and my daughter kept asking, ‘Who would do this to us?’ ” In addition to the militia members, Omar said he blames Trump and other political leaders who have demonized immigrants generally and Muslims specifically. “When politicians speak and talk the politics of hate and division, people who don’t know us see us as an enemy,” Omar said. “These three guys came all the way from a small town in Illinois to throw a bomb at people they never met.” [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Alice Crites contributed to this report.
Sending Flowers - Roses or Carnations?
There are many reasons to send flowers to someone. Sympathy, apologizing to someone, showing someone that you love them or that they are interested and celebrating several parties are just some of the reasons to send flowers. Regardless of why you send flowers, for most occasions the flowers are very appropriate. If you send flowers to someone special, they will be envious because you have thought of them.
Today it is easier than ever to send flowers for any occasion. There are a multitude of online sites dedicated to sending flowers, sweets and small gifts for whatever reason you have in mind. Of course, there are still traditional ways to send flowers. Actually driving to a florist, selecting what you want to send and then paying for it is a fairly simple process. One advantage of going directly to a florist is that you can make the florist help you choose something and you can even see an example of any arrangement you choose to send. With online florists, all the photos look remarkable, but since these orders are usually sent to local florists in the area where you want the flowers delivered, it is not known exactly what will be delivered to the recipient. Whether you order them from a florist or online, there are usually shipping charges for each order in addition to the price you pay for the arrangement.
Probably the most popular day to send flowers is Valentine's Day. This is a good alternative position for men. If you are not sure what to give a woman for her birthday or Valentine's Day, flowers are a good option at any time. Women usually love flowers and the typical flower sent for Valentine's Day is the rose. Roses are a good flower to send if you are not sure what type to send, mainly because women usually love roses. One of the only disadvantages of roses is the price; They are usually quite expensive. Carnations are also a good flower to choose from and generally much cheaper than roses. Carnations, like roses, come in many colors. With carnations, you will sometimes see flowers with colors on the tips of the petals. This is achieved by placing the stem of the flower in water colored with food coloring. The flower absorbs water through the stem and the result is unique colored petals. Carnations also last much longer than most other flowers. If you keep them in water they will last a couple of weeks, where the roses usually start to wither and die before the weekend. In addition to flowers, most florists can send balloons, chocolates, stuffed animals and even small gifts, such as jewelry, along with the arrangement.
Contradictory Truths, Part One
Philippians 2:5-11
Tom Landry, the late head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was once quoted as saying something like this:
"I have a job to do that is not very complicated, but it is often difficult: to get a group of men to do what they don't want to do so they can achieve the one thing they have wanted all their lives."
Coach Landry, in that seemingly contradictory statement, described what discipline is all about . . . doing what we don't want to do so we can accomplish what we've always wanted.
So much of what results in a fulfilled life is really the product of a contradiction. Those who wish to be the best leaders must demonstrate true servanthood. Those who ultimately are given the oversight of vast regions and broad responsibilities have initially proven themselves faithful in the little things. The most effective form of retaliation is an absence of retaliation . . . leaving all vengeance to God. In doing so, to quote the Scriptures, we "heap burning coals upon the head" of an adversary, which is nothing more than overcoming evil with good—another contradictory truth.
Want a few more?
The way to show yourself wise is not so much by speech but by silence.
The way to stop a loud argument is by a soft-spoken word. The most powerful rebuke is not a loud, negative blast, but a quiet, positive model.
The secret of helping others mature is not more rules and stricter laws but greater trust.
Those who are most respected for their knowledge and the skill of drawing others into it are not those who have all the right answers but rather those who ask the right questions.
Those who give generously have much more than those who hoard.
One lovely flower, personally picked from the garden by tiny hands, can mean much more than two dozen long-stemmed roses ordered from the florist.
A handwritten note of love and affection lingers longer in one's memory than a $3.50 embossed card from Hallmark.
Forgiveness is the key to handling our enemies, not revenge.
A brief, warm, tender embrace with very few words says more to the grieving than an evening's visit full of sympathy talk and long prayers.
Funny, isn't it? God often delivers His best gifts to us through the back door of our lives. In unexpected ways . . . with surprises inside the wrappings. Somewhat like the therapy He used when Elijah was so low, so terribly disillusioned. How did the Lord minister to him? We'll talk about that in Part Two.
