What is this about?

To those who don't know what i'm talking about, the "Team Mom" is a popular trope often found in ensemble shows where there is a character who acts in a more "gently parental" way to other members of the team.

Just like how the popular "Space Dad" nickname was coined for Shiro and the fandom accepted he was the "Team Dad", there was a time when the fandom tried to shove Allura in the "Space Mom" role.

But after the first seasons, the fans realised that Allura didn't exactly fit the role and just stopped using the name for her.

Some people tried to call Hunk the Mom Friend or Coran as he is also an adult and Allura's guardian.

This little meta is my attempt of saying that the closest thing the Paladins had to a "Space Mom" was a lanky cuban teenager.

Each part covers Lance's relationship with the rest of the team from this angle: how Lance takes on a caretaker/protector position and other interesting stuff I may find relevant.

Helping Love - Character Database on Lance Altea | VLD - Omegaverse AU

Lance Altea - Male - Omega - Mother - Paladin, Prince, Heart of Voltron. Database Info on Lance: Lance is the youngest child and only son to King Alfor of Planet Altea and the only sibling to Allura of Altea, Lance was kidnapped as a child by a Galra commander named Yjok and was taken to a not known planet called Earth, there for 10,000 years Lance went through much torture and abuse after he was taken from his family as a 5 year old child. His supposed brother named Luis had raped him when he was 14 years old making him produce two children, they are 5 months apart, one boy and one girl that Luis then lied to his wife that they were from a surrogate while Lance was just a toy to him. Being an Omega gave him the ability to create children with his own body however, Luis had taken advantage of his heat twice and later had given birth too his first two children.

Lance, because of how he was raised from 5 years old, is short for his age at a standing 5'4, while other males are higher in height varying from 5'7 to near 6'3. Because of not being allowed to eat his growth became stunted and he did not grow much even with the small amounts of food he would eat just to prevent his cheek bones to show through his skin. His is also extremely skittish, doesn't like loud noises and flinches when someone comes into contact with him, this is the effects of PTSD he obtained as a child that followed him into his teens. Gradually his bad habits went under once he was surrounded by caring people but ultimately fell back into bad habits when he was once again kidnapped by Prince Lotor of the Galra Empire and raped once more and fell back into his old habits.

Lance considers 3 females his sisters, his biological sister Allura, his mother figure sister Veronica McClain and his last sister being Rachel McClain. He has four children, his first two being because of Luis and his last being because of Lotor, his youngest daughter was from his mate who is an Alpha, despite his bad past with Alphas, he doesn't consider Keith in that list of his bad past. He has one child that is by consent while his other three weren't by consent, but he still loves all his kids equally.

His mate is Keith, and he somehow resurrected his dead sister, Veronica from being fatally stabbed and then reunited with her in space due to both of their surprises. Lance achieved his dream of being among the stars but in reality, he just returned back to the feeling he had before he was kidnapped by Yjok.

Lance has a few scars that are the results of burns, his back was burned a bit from the explosion he prevented Coran from getting hurt but was injured in the process. His right arm at the top of his bicep, was burned by a blow torch and the same to his left thigh. He also has a few breakages, but he makes sure he doesn't overwork himself to the point he causes another breaking in his bones. He also hates being babied, Veronica used to do when he was little, and she came home from one of her many jobs and ended up finding him injured everytime.

His kids rank from oldest to youngest: Sylvio is his oldest son, Nadia and Mela are the middle children and Cole is his youngest son, however there was a time difference between Cole and Mela. At 7 months old, Mela was the oldest of Cole but because of the three year time difference, Cole who is the youngest became the second middle child and Mela the youngest.

Lance is the heart of Voltron and managed to unlock something no paladin had ever even hoped to achieve, he can feel all of the lions and the lions can feel him. They have a connection like no other, it's different from pilot to lion, it's more soul focused. If he could so much as think about it, he can see through a lions eyes and call to the lions if he much as wished.

Because he was kidnapped, Allura was forced to accept the title of next ruler of Altea but she didn't want that, she was fine with being just a princess while supporting her brother to the best of her abilities however once he recovered his memories after going to Oriande, Allura and their advisor worked a full Quintant (Day) to change everything back to the way it was before Yjok had gotten his hands on him.

Lance considers team Voltron, a certain amount of rebels (Including Matt and Veronica) and a certain amount of Blades his family.

Nadia knows that she should feel relaxed about this because everything is going smoothly, but she can’t.

Just like they discussed, they pretended to be eating breakfast when suddenly Sofía “got a terrible stomachache”. And then she was being accompanied to the infirmary by her dad and them both. And then they “suddenly” had the brilliant idea that what would make Sofía feel better is to have one of the Lion plushies that uncle Lance made for them and they offered to go pick it up. And then Adam told them that he would call for someone to go with them, to what they answered with a “don’t worry, we know this place” and left, to now be on their way to the Hangars.

The problem with this plan, according to Nadia, was that it had too many “and then” for it not to be up to pure luck. So far everyone had reacted and everything had gone just how they planned, but what if it suddenly didn’t? They should’ve prepared more…

As the oldest, she should’ve asked more questions. But Sofía was growing desperate and a desperate Sofía was a reckless one.

To be entirely honest, their whole plan had been 50% improvisation, with Sofía telling them “I’m gonna be sick and you’ll have your chance” more or less ten seconds before grabbing her stomach and starting to cry.

“We’re here”

Nadia looked at her brother and then at the Hangar’s entrance. On a normal day, it looked big, but now it was huge.

She nodded.

“Let’s go, then”.

They made their way to the Black Lion, completely ignoring the others, something unusual since they always greeted all of them, Red and Blue in particular.

The Bayards weren’t hard to find.

In fact, everything at the Hangar was easy to find and even easier to steal. Probably because they thought that no one would want to steal something from Voltron, the Universe being at stake and all, right?

Wrong.

Nadia went to grab the bayard.

“Wait!” Sylvio yelled and startled her.

“Sylvio” Don’t do that!”

“Sorry, but is just… they teleport!” What?

“What?”

“The Bayards! They teleport! We’ve seen Uncle Lance do that, remember?”

Oh, right…

“And you just thought of that now?!”

“Hey, it didn’t occur to you either!”

She groaned.

“Don’t fight me! We don’t have time for this!”.

He huffed and Nadia looked at the Black Lion.

Sylvio was right. The Bayards teleported when summoned. And if Keith summoned the Bayard and it responded, all of this would’ve been for nothing.

But they were here now, and honestly, who knew if they would ever have another chance like this.

Probably not.

She looked at her brother.

“We’ll take it”

“What?!”

“We’ll take it, Sylvio. We’re already here, and we won’t have another chance, so we’ll take it and deal with it”. Nadia stated, firm.

Sylvio gulped but nodded at the same time she took the Bayard.

“They’re taking too long” Adam said, sounding worried. “Maybe I should look for them-”

“Ugh” Sofía grabbed her stomach “Daddy, my stomach still hurts”. Under absolutely no circumstances should he –or anyone, for that matter– try to locate Nadia and Sylvio.

The distraction worked, as not even a second later Adam was by her side, his worry being redirected.

“Oh, sweetheart, you’re not feeling even a little bit better?” He asked, while running his hands through her hair.

“Not really...”

The door opened.

“We’re here!” Announced Sylvio.

“Yeah, sorry we took so long, but Sylvio couldn’t find his plushie because his room is a mess!”

“It’s not!”

“It’s too!”

“But did you get it?” Sofía asked. And she realized just a second too late that she sounded way more serious than she should, to be talking about a fabric Lion “...the plushie?” she added, just to be sure.

Nadia smiled and gave her both the Red and Blue plushies that they picked up on their way back.

“Don’t worry, we got it”.

Okay, now I’m curious: imagine Lance and Pidge going on their first date! How would their parents react? And how would chip react?

Oooh, that's an interesting one to think of. I'm going to assume you're thinking of VLD Lance and Pidge with Chip as her twin. If I'm wrong in assumption, I deeply apologize.

Well, let's see. Lance's parents, and even his siblings, would be excited. A smart lass like Pidge? Someone who makes Lance smile? Someone he has as both a dear friend and a love interest? She has to be wonderful. They would share their excitement with him and even call up relatives to gush about Lance's date and how they hope the two continue dating and stay together. Lance is most likely embarrassed by all of the gushing, but he also appreciates their support. His mother probably makes every excuse for Lance to invite Pidge over for meals, snacks, just to hang out, even asks if she's good with kids and have her join him in babysitting Nadia and Sylvio.

Pidge's parents would probably be supportive, too. Colleen would prod Pidge for details on the date. She would also fuss about Pidge's hair, what she wears, all the fun stuff hours ahead of the date when Pidge would insist that they're just going to a movie and a family diner, she doesn't need to be fancy or anything. In the end, Colleen wins and makes Pidge go in a dress with her hair done up. While supportive, Sam is also worried. This is his baby girl after all. And she's going on a date?! She's growing up so fast! He would want photos of the two before they leave, almost as if it were prom night or something. When Lance brings her home, he'd be waiting by the window or with security cameras to see if they kiss and hope they keep it innocent. It is, after all, their first date. Chip would especially be excited for Pidge, though he'd keep calm, too. He'd happily wait for Pidge to come home and stay up all night with her to talk about the date. Of course, he'd also wait with his phone all night just in case Pidge sends a distress call and needs to get out of the date ASAP.

Bonus, Veronica and Matt. They would spend their time teasing their siblings about dating. However, during the date, they may either be sneaking around to watch them, make sure things are going well. They're happy that their youngest siblings decided to take their relationship to the next level and start dating. However, they're also protective, ready to defend their sibling if the other breaks their heart for any reason. It would take a number of dates and sneaking in to observe before they finally stop. If Pidge doesn't notice them first and yell at Matt for spying.

I'll be honest, thinking of how dating would go and parental reactions isn't my best thing. I don't date and the best my mama did when my sister dated was either promise to curse the boyfriend or insult them, the jerks anyway, and dote on the one who was really nice and wonderful. So, I did my best thinking how others would be.

Lance’s brother Luis is married to Lisa. They have two kids: Sylvio & Nadia. 

Rachel is likely only a year or two older than Lance. Close enough that she and Lance would have both had to sit at the kid’s table during their dinner! Some people speculate that they’re twins, but Lance was pretty firmly cemented as the baby, so I give a little bit of time between them.

I have a gen fic for each Paladin, but then the Plance fics outnumber those, so Lance and Pidge would be my go to.

So for character POV, each Paladin has one, then within Plance, Pidge has 12 and Lance has 7. Interesting, I thought it was more even. Hunk had a POV in a Plance fic too briefly!

Specifics:

Best/worst title?

Best title: Urgh I liked a lot of them. Too Soon and Not Soon Enough probably. I like how it summarizes the story without telling you how, but by the end you know.

Worst title: Seasons of Magic aka I tried to come up with a clever title when I realized I wasn’t done with it. It’s so bland to me. I’m also basically trying to rebrand from mage/familiar AU. I don’t think it’s working 😅 (not that I care I’m trying to make it easier to reference but I’m too late)

Best/worst last line?

Best: “I love you too, Pidge,” he [Lance] says, nestling her head to his chest and not bothering to correct her. “You’re the best nemesis a hero could ask for.” - I love that line so much, from Crystal Clear. Enemies to lovers is such a good trope.

Worst: Pidge groans. At this rate her double life is definitely doomed to unravel. - for how much I love Frostbite, I really hate how lame it ends. Like I totally could have said that better or continued the scene a bit but I am LAZY.

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I wrote waaaaaaay more than expected. I figured I’d write something every few months. Now I can write a 2k fic in a setting if I’m on game.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

I was just doing gen fic last year, never would I have expected to be so taken by Plance that it became my main muse.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

Honestly? Probably Pilot. It was one of my earliest VLD fic ideas to do a Gundam Wing crossover and to actually finish a one shot early in the year (when I was still dipping my feet into fandom again) just made me so so happy. I still smile thinking about the continuation possibilities. One of my favorite parts of Shiro’s character is that he is the ace pilot. Because of Keith’s role that sometimes gets overshadowed. I was so pleased to get to highlight that.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

On Ao3, that would be Exsanguination. No surprise there, it was my first posted Plance fic and I continued it.

On Tumblr it’s First Encounters, the first of the Altean Plance AU based on the art and headcanons. I was just struck with a clear opening image one afternoon and wrote it all right then and there. I had no idea it would be so well received.

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

Space Birthday. It may have been a bit of a mess since it was my very first VLD fic, but it has everything I love. Hunk bonding with an ‘enemy’ over cooking, Team Punk, Plance in distress, Hunk saves the day thanks to mechanics. Also heartfelt stuff with Keith. And he’s the only Paladin besides Lance to get an actual birthday themed fic from me.

Story that could have been better?

I really hate to say Wrong Diamond, but I totally could have done much better with it. It feels skimpy. Probably why I am still writing in the AU.

Sexiest story?

Ha. That would be a tie between Crystal Clear and Exsanguination. The first I actually tried and the second completely by accident. I’m not sure it worked though.

Saddest story?

All my sad fics have a bit of crack to them. Pilot is pretty melancholy. Crystal Clear has a good Plance argument that gets heated. Road Trip in general though might take the cake. It’s full of angst amid some humor due to the premise.

Most fun?

Shot Through the Heart in terms of tone.

"Uh, Keith, hold up a tic."

Confused, Keith turned back around. "What?"

Hunk rubbed the back of his neck. "So uh, you know we're friends right? Like, I meant what I said we're like brothers. We're tight. I mean, we share a mind inside of a giant robot."

Keith blinked, clearly surprised. "Yeah, I kinda got that from the hug you gave me back then. It was nice," he said with a smile. "And we work well together."

"Yeah so - wait what? No, I'm supposed to be giving you the pep talk here."

"It's fine, Hunk. I'm doing important work and so are you. I already had this talk with Allura."

"Oh. Well, what I'm trying to say is that we're friends. I care a lot about you and your feelings. So if I say something that's weird or you don't like, you gotta tell me. I'm a terrible and nosy person and I'm sorry."

Keith stood silent, processing the words, and then smiling. "I've accepted the side of me that's Galra," he said simply. "It's still a little weird, but I've always had this feeling that something didn't add up." He smiled a bit. "I don't mind a question or two, but I'm still learning myself."

"Deal, no Galra questions for a while then. Just as long as you come visit more often, okay? We all miss you.

"...hug it out?"

Keith snorted and obliged into Hunk's waiting arms. "Always."

Hardest story to write?

I struggled with the ending to Exsanguination. It took forever to come to me.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

I wrote The Secrets of Beasts in one setting and I still can’t believe how easily it came out. I blame the Plance discord folks for putting everyone on a baby craze.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

Not particularly? I write based on my existing understanding of the characters and nothing really surprised to that note.

Most overdue story?

Welcome to the Neighborhood. I wanted to write that Allura gen fic all year (as I wanted one for all the Paladins) and I hoped s8 would give me the motivation. It was not worth the cost.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Collaborations! And participating in a zine! And signing up for events (exchanges and bangs)! I learned that it’s not that scary. People are chill and so easy to get along with. Also the task isn’t as daunting as I think of it’s an idea I love.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

This is hard because I’m already doing above and beyond what I ever expected to be doing writing wise. I suppose it will be to finish my gen fic since I’ve been writing a lot of plance lately.
