Week 5: Political Engagement
Political engagement can be understood as political participation which refers to ‘voluntary activities undertaken by the mass public to influence public policy, either directly or by affecting the selection of persons who make policies.’- C.J. Uhlaner
Why is social media popular in politics nowadays?
Nowadays, the use of social media for political participations have significantly grown. The reasons behind these are because social media such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are influencing the political landscape (Chin 2020). Participation through social media give the politicians access to larger audience and more importantly the younger audience.
The following portraits some of the politicians’ social media.
Tumblr media
(Picture: Donald Trump’s Twitter page)
Tumblr media
(Picture: Scott Morrison’s Twitter page)
Tumblr media
(Picture: Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Twitter page)
According to Abdulrauf, binti Abdul Hamid and bin Ishak (2017), social media has offered youths with new ways of political participation and democratic citizenship and it has significantly influenced political participation among younger generations. A former president, Barack Obama was described as too good at social media in term for civic engagement (Bogost 2017). His Obama’s campaign was rather successful of creating two-way conversation rather than broadcasting information (Chin 2020).
Tumblr media
How does this change the ways it was?
Politics were just a dull topic and a one-way communication where the politicians keep throwing some fancy speeches at the audiences from my view. But this norm has changed upside down when politicians start discussing political plans and engage with their audiences via social media. The outcomes are active responses from the youth and contributes to the democratic process through youth online political participation which is difficult to be achieved by traditional political participation (Abdulrauf, binti Abdul Hamid & bin Ishak 2017). One good example lately is new political party, MUDA registered by Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman where Syed Saddiq used the hashtag #MUDAsudahMULA on Malaysia Day, which was Malay for “Muda has started”, prompting speculation from his supporters (Prakash 2020). Subsequently, several youth leaders involved in discussions to form the political party have also been tweeting using the same hashtag, outlining their hopes for the new generation of politicians. Today, the hashtag culture allows political changes and news spread fast and far than it could ever be.

The Dark Sides.
Just as good as it can be, things could go wrong. The famous ‘Cambridge Analytica scandal’. Based on Lapowsky (2019), the story was like this “Cambridge Analytica had purchased Facebook data on tens of millions of Americans without their knowledge to build a “psychological warfare tool,” which it unleashed on US voters to help elect Donald Trump as president.” The outrage of users, lawmakers, privacy advocates, and media pundits caused Facebook’s stock price fell immediately and boycotts began. People or politicians may continue to use social media or the data from it as a corruption tool or to manipulate the politics just like how Cambridge Analytica did.
youtube
(Video: Facebook's Cambridge Analytica data scandal, explained)
I am still no fan of politics as there are just too much conspirations and scandals going on. But voices should be raised when justice is needed, at least that’s what I thought. Maybe we young people should really unite and do things right, and like one classmate mentioned, we could give the new political party, MUDA a chance and see what it could achieve.

Bersatu did not expel disputed chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and four others from the party, president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin clarified today.
He said the five instead automatically lost their memberships when they chose to sit among the Opposition during the May 18 meeting of Parliament.
Bersatu is part of the ruling Perikatan Nasional alliance and its lawmakers sat among backbenchers during the unusual single-day meeting.
Muhyiddin further insisted that he did not act hastily in the matter despite repeated calls for Dr Mahathir and his faction to be punished.
“We are certainly disappointed with Tun Dr Mahathir’s choice not to be with us on the party’s path and struggle as determined by the Supreme Council.
“Tun and his supporters have chosen to keep cooperating with Pakatan Harapan even though the party has decided otherwise. If that is Tun’s decision, I wish them well,” Muhyiddin said in a statement today.
The Bersatu president insisted that he must be fair in upholding the party’s constitution regardless of the positions of those who violated its articles.
He then sought to rally Bersatu members and urged them to close ranks to reinforce the administration formed with the party’s allies.
Bersatu organising secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya informed Dr Mahathir, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman and Maszlee Malik on Thursday that their memberships were terminated as they sat on the Opposition bench on May 18.
This prompted disputed Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya to issue a termination letter to Muhammad Suhaimi for violating the party’s rules in the sacking.
Bersatu split in two after the February political crisis following Dr Mahathir’s resignation as the prime minister and the party’s chairman.
Despite the Bersatu supreme council’s rejection of his resignation at the time, the party’s leaders insisted that Dr Mahathir held no executive powers until he was officially reinstated in the position.
The party also has two secretaries-general, having installed Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin in the position after removing Marzuki from the role.
However, Marzuki from Dr Mahathir’s camp has refused to acknowledge this and continues to issue statements as the Bersatu secretary-general.
Dr Mahathir visited the Bersatu headquarters yesterday where he reasserted his position as the party’s chairman with full executive powers.

Our definition of adulthood is changing
Around the world, the idea of adulthood - when it happens and how it is defined - is being challenged.
In Australia, the Greens’ Jordon Steele-John introduced a bill to give 16- and 17-year-olds the right to vote; Malaysian minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman announced the country may lower the voting age to 18 before the next elections; and Japan recently lowered its voting age from 20 to 18 for referendums, following the 2016 decision to lower the voting age in general elections.
Japan’s decision was in part to address voter apathy and help young people feel more engaged in politics. But it may also signal that social views regarding the commencement of adulthood have shifted.
The shifting definitions of adulthood
Adulthood has traditionally been defined by a combination of age and the achievement of social milestones. Most countries have a legally defined age to determine when a person is considered an adult - the age of majority. In Australia, most states consider a person to be an adult in court at 18. The age of 18 is also consistent with other adult privileges, such as the right to purchase alcohol and to marry. However, 17-year-olds can enlist for military service and obtain a driver’s licence, whilst 16-year-olds can give sexual consent (in most states). The law confers adulthood on the basis of age, but also recognises the process of becoming an adult as involving gradual increases in social responsibility.
This legally defined approach to adulthood is mirrored in other countries, where there are differences between the age of majority and social responsibilities granted to young people.
International Ages of Social Responsibility.
Socially, determinants of adulthood traditionally focus on a person taking increasing responsibility for their lives in various ways. Completing school, commencing full-time employment, getting married and parenthood – these are all observable indicators used to determine when a person is viewed as adult (Zacares, Serra, & Torres, 2015).
Since the 1980s, however, some of these observable milestones are being achieved at later ages. Increased access to tertiary education has delayed young people leaving home and developing romantic relationships. The increased acceptance of de facto relationships has also reduced the need to leave home and marry in some Western cultures.
Economic changes have also resulted in unstable employment markets and increases in costs of living in some countries, prompting many young people to remain at home and dependent on parents.
In 2017, the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia report indicated that home ownership among 18-to-39-year-olds has declined from 36% to 25% since 2001. Among young people aged 22 to 25, meanwhile, 60% of males and 48% of females were found to still be living with their parents in 2015, up from 43% and 27% respectively since 2001.
Due to these social changes, our expectations of young people and their level of social responsibility has also changed.
Psychological perspectives: an emerging adulthood
Psychologically, age alone is an unreliable determinant of adulthood, as each individual varies in their rate of biological, cognitive and emotional development.
The recognition of a new life stage - emerging adulthood - has been recommended by developmental psychologists to account for the changes to social milestones that have traditionally represented adulthood. The concept of “emerging adulthood” acknowledges the varied levels of independence exhibited by young people and reflects the process of personal development and “finding oneself”.
A subjective definition of adulthood is linked with positive-identity formation and well-being. Young people who perceive themselves to be adults are closer to reaching adult benchmarks, exhibit fewer signs of depression and hold a robust sense of self.
What should society expect of adults?
If a more dynamic definition of adulthood is adopted, at what age is it reasonable to assign social responsibility to young people?
Young people in high-arousal situations are at risk of making impulsive decisions up untiltheir mid-20s. However, during times of low-emotional arousal, the reasoning abilities of young people are equivalent to adults.
The psychological evidence suggests the current approach in law of gradually increasing social responsibility for young people is prudent and accurately reflects the transitional nature of development to adulthood.
Increasing social responsibility among emerging adults, via civic engagement, has also been linked with their improved well-being. Civic engagement refers to involvement in one’s community and social and political systems. Therefore, Japan’s decision to lower its voting age is an example of law reflecting the contemporary emerging nature of adulthood.

Gagal bela riders Foodpanda, Syed Saddiq disaran letak jawatan #tiberrrrrr!
Tumblr media
