Preparing Before NaNoWriMo
Tumblr media
We only have a few more weeks before NaNoWriMo comes knocking at our doors, asking for our utmost dedication and creativity for the 50,000 word count. NaNo guest Sydney Salter encourages us to prepare and plan accordingly on what we want to do with our novels when we finish.
I’ve pushed myself to the 50,000-word finish line for six NaNoWriMo novels—My Big Nose And Other Natural Disasters and Swoon At Your Own Risk eventually got published. I polished the other manuscripts into market-ready shape, should the market ever be ready for a YA mummy romcom. I had fun writing those unsold stories and learned a lot. No regrets. I told stories that I wanted to tell.
It’s that sixth manuscript. I wrote 50,003 words and never opened the manuscript again. It’s still on my computer file with a 2012 date stamp.
That’s the novel I wrote by the seat of my pants. I dove into the story with a big voice and a vague notion of where it might go. And I struggled. One day I padded my word count with the character’s grocery list. She needed A LOT of stuff at the store! Ugh. The plot, characters, setting—all of it is a big fat mess.
Not that a mess is a bad thing for a NaNo novel. To reach that 50,000 words in 30 days, you can’t go back and fix stuff. That’s one of the best parts of fast writing. You push yourself through some rough patches, making notes about stuff to fix later.
The problem occurs when you make such a mess that the thought of rewriting everything makes you want to do anything else—like scrub your bathroom, or something. The other sad fact is that 50,000 words usually leaves you in the perilous middle of a full-length novel. After November you have to find the excitement to write thousands and thousands of words to get to that magic phrase: The End.
My 2012 NaNo experience was so bad that I waited seven years before trying again. I wrote slowly for years. I missed out on creating that fast draft that exists to be revised into something shiny and good. Writing slowly gets the job done, eventually. But slowly.
We’re not here to write slow. We’re here to get a big chunk of a novel written!
A little preparation can go a long way to making November a fun and productive writing month. Right now I’m thinking about my main character. His sidekick. His enemies. I’m thinking about what he thinks he wants versus what he needs. I'm jotting down ideas for great scenes. I plan to create a loose outline. I know that magic happens during the writing process, so I won’t be rigid about my planned scenes, but if I’m ever feeling lost, I’ll have something to write about. You know, besides groceries.
I’m not going to do it alone, either. I’ll look to all the great info here at NaNoWriMo and I’ll pick a writing craft book to accompany me through this first draft. So many writing exercises have turned into really great scenes in my stories.
Every NaNo is different just like every story is different. But I do know that taking some time to prepare can leave you in a better place when you hit that delicious 50,000 word mark. You want to write something that you are excited to finish and revise. Let’s get ready to write some great stories!

Level the Playing Field to Keep Future Swim Stars in the Water – Science and Technology Research News
Tumblr media
The University of Sydney and Swimming Australia are teaming up on a world-first task examining the effect development spurts and various rates of advancement have on efficiency and continuous participation in swimming.
Job H2gr0w
The University of Sydney and Swimming Australia are teaming up on a world-first nation-wide research task H2gr0w, targeted at examining the effect development spurts and various rates of advancement in teenage years have on efficiency and continuous participation in swimming.
“We know that factors like different rates of growth and body maturation, coupled with when a child is born during the competition calendar, can have a big difference on swimming performance in the early teen years,” stated University of Sydney task lead Partner Teacher Stephen Cobley from the Professors of Health Sciences.
“Even though our research shows these differences even out by the late teen years, it can be easy for kids to find this discouraging or for coaches to be misled into selecting the relatively older or more developed kids who are likely that bit stronger in the water earlier on.”
Swimming Australia task lead Jamie Saltersaid Job H2gr0w intends to modification this by gathering nation-wide information to track development and maturation in 1000 establishing swimmers.
This will enable scientists to identify phases of advancement to assistance coaches, clubs and moms and dads much better comprehend precisely where a kid is at.
“Our end goal is to retain more athletes in the sport and help them transition from junior swimming right through to potentially becoming a Dolphin in the future,” stated Salter, General Supervisor of Efficiency Pathways at Swimming Australia. We have actually recognized a method to take into consideration the reality that we can have kids nearly a year apart in age and advancement completing versus each other.Associate Prof Stephen Cobley, Sport and workout psychologist
Newest research
In a paper in the Journal of Science and Medication in Sportthe research group, consisting of partners from the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport, showed how they can get rid of the affects of developmental distinctions in swimming – where older professional athletes within an age organizing normally carry out much better and have choice benefits for advancement programs.
The scientists utilized longitudinal information from state and nationwide swimming occasions to determine the relationship in between age (10-18 years) and 100m swimming efficiency in over 550 males. Utilizing this relationship, they then changed efficiency times on a sample of male junior freestyle swimmers to revaluate swimming efficiency and eliminate any predisposition.
“Basically we have identified a way to individually acknowledge and take into account the fact that we can have children almost a year apart in age and development competing against each other – which is particularly relevant around the time of puberty,” stated Partner Teacher Cobley.
“When swimmers show up to get involved or contend, we now have the basis to compute the anticipated distinction in time in between the 2 people based upon relative age. In essence we can make modifications to level the playing field.
“This is critically important to keep kids engaged in sport, which is a concern for nationwide public health and moms and dads alike.”
Job results
Based Upon the research partnership Swimming Australia has actually currently carried out steps to help in recognizing future professional athletes that might have been formerly neglected, and methods to assistance coaches in determining more properly their swimmers’ phase of advancement.
The research has actually likewise contributed in identifying competitors modifications at a nationwide and state level to boost the durability of all swimmers in the sport. These consist of delaying the entry age at nationwide competitors, having various age bands for males and women to represent distinctions in maturation, and developing various competitors formats at a state level.
About Job H2gr0w
Job H2gr0w is a multi-faceted research task established and initiated by Partner Teacher Stephen Cobley from the University of Sydney and Jamie Salter of Swimming Australia Ltd.
The task goals to:
Track development and maturation in establishing swimmers. Examine the relationships of development and maturation on the different elements of efficiency advancement;Develop options that represent the impact of development and maturation in advancement and efficiency; andProvide academic resources and products to notify all neighborhood members (e.g., coaches; professionals) about the development and maturation procedure

Hastings Valley Vikings Helga Peta Salter reflects on her baby rugby union career because starting in 2017|Port Macquarie News|Port Macquarie, NSW
Tumblr media
PORT Macquarie's Peta Salter has actually gone from being a self-proclaimed rugby union "rookie" to rubbing shoulders - at times physically - with some of Australia's best woman players in under 5 years. The 21-year-old will captain Hunter Wildfires in the Jack Scott Cup division two grand last on October 17, when they tackle Campbelltown at Sylvania Waters in Sydney. It's an exceptional rise through the ranks for the former Hastings Valley Vikings Helga who only played her first competitive match of rugby union in 2017 Prior to that, her rugby experience was limited to high school gala days as soon as a year in between year 9 and year 12. "The Helga's were an actually great start since that was the very first season for me where I played footy effectively," she stated. "I 'd played a little bit at school however never a complete season." It was an outcome of those gala days where her future Mid North Coast Tomahawks females's representative coach Steve Lee saw her capacity and acted upon it. "One day he saw me and wanted to understand if I 'd pertain to rep training which was just a number of weeks out from Nation Champions at the time," she recalled. "I 'd never ever really played and didn't know what position I was so he put me as halfback and I was a bit under-prepared, but he is one of the very best coaches I have actually had." Salter continued her advancement under Lee's training for two years prior to she transferred to Newcastle for university. She said many of the skills she found out in that time had actually been due to the fact that of Lee's coaching style. "He was proficient at getting the women all set and understanding what buttons to press and that made me fall in love with the game a lot more," Salter said. "His training taught me a lot; a lot of my abilities originated from those 2 years." The progression through the rugby ranks continued upon her arrival in the Hunter where she was handed the captaincy with Merewether Carlton prior to the opportunity to bet the Wildfires occurred. "This year I was preparing on playing for Merewether Carlton, but the chance came up for the Wildfires so I went and trialled," she said. Signing up with Salter at the Wildfires were former teammates at the Tomahawks - Kaitlyn Lainey, Tammy and Candice Clay and Jess Frost. This season, the Mid North Coast quintet have actually tested themselves versus Wallaroos players such as Grace Hamilton, Elia Green and Iliseva Batibasaga. While a Wallaroos jersey stays the goal, the previous Helga acknowledged she was just pleased to keep learning. "It's been so useful for me to bet those sorts of gamers because it makes you step up a level, but I'm not at Wallaroos level yet due to the fact that I'm so new to rugby," she said. "At the moment I'm delighted to keep knowing; I'm only 21 so I have actually got time on my side and while I'm taking pleasure in playing, that's the primary thing." Marie Josephine (Wilson) HALLETT
With deep sadness we announce the passing of Marie Josephine (nee Wilson) Hallett at age 92 in a Toronto nursing home on April 24, 2020 due to COVID-19. Marie is survived by her loving daughter, Shelley, who was at her bedside until the end, and by her devoted son, Cdr. (Ret.) Carr Hallett (Leslie) and his two children, Keelan Greenwood-Hallett and Tessa Greenwood-Hallett (Dylan Brenton), all of Halifax, N.S.; and by her brother, Paul Malof (Fran) of Amherst, N.Y., and his two sons, Mark and Chris and their families. Marie was predeceased by her husband Terrence "Terry" Hallett and daughters Tara, Gail and Lynne, who all succumbed to cystic fibrosis early in life after being lovingly cared for by their dedicated parents; a son, Jude, died in infancy. Marie was born in Montreal and came to Niagara in 1936 with her mother, Barbara "Babs" Wilson, her younger brother Paul, and Babs' sister, Peggy, and her husband Holger Gould. The family settled in St. Catharines and Marie's mother Babs operated Wilson's Hairdressing Studio on St. Paul Street for many years. Marie attended the Convent School at St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral and St. Catharines Collegiate, graduating from Loretto Academy in Hamilton. As a teen Marie worked at the St. Catharines Public Library and Wallace's Department Store and later the Farmers' Bank on King St. Marie attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Hamilton. She returned to St. Catharines and joined Little Theatre, where she met Terry, co-owner and operator of Hallett's Union House in Merritton. Marie and Terry were wed in 1951 at the Cathedral. Marie loved being a wife, mother and homemaker. Her family delighted in her fun-loving spirit, her delicious cooking and the comfortable home she created for them on South Drive. Marie and Terry welcomed daughter Lynne's classmates from Lady Spencer Churchill into their home to socialize regularly even after Lynne's death in 1987. Marie nursed Terry at home until his death from cancer in 1994. Marie obtained her B.A. in Psychology from Brock University in 1980 and her Faculty of Art Diploma in Drawing and Painting from Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto in 2005. Marie was an avid musician and loved to sing; she achieved Grade 8 level in piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She was an animal lover and donated throughout her life to the Humane Society and the S.P.C.A. Marie's other favourite charities were the Scarborough Missions and Covenant House in Toronto. Marie was a member of The Council of Canadians and the Art Gallery of Ontario. For many years she was a member of the Shaw Festival. Marie will be deeply missed by Peggy's children, first cousins Max Gould (Lally) of Toronto; Claudia [Gould] Peacock (Bob) of St. Catharines; Valerie [Gould] Salter (Bill) of Beamsville; and Margaret [Gould] Mackay (Leigh) of Sydney, Australia, and their respective children and grandchildren; and the children and grandchildren of Marie's first cousin, the late Barbara [McCormick] Markle of London, Ont., daughter of Babs' sister, Winnie McCormick and her husband Ralph of Hamilton. A funeral Mass and celebration of Marie's life will take place in St. Catharines when it is safe to gather upon the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

THE CLASS OF 2K18 MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
What is the Class of 2K18?
The “2K Classes” are groups of debut YA/MG authors who focus on MARKETING. We pay dues ($275 per person), maintain a private forum, create a website, and commit to 10-15 hours per month to collectively promote our books. Membership is capped at 20 authors, and the 2k Classes have become well-known among librarians and booksellers, so there are benefits to joining.
History:
The first 2K Class was founded in 2007 by Greg R. Fishbone and has been a strong promotional network/outlet for debut YA and MG authors every year since. Here are some 2k alumni you might be familiar with: Jay Asher, Melissa Marr, Rebecca Stead, Sara Zarr, Jo Knowles, Nancy Viau, Sydney Salter, Rhonda Hayter, Jeri Smith-Ready, and Jennifer Hubbard, among many other talented authors. And word on the street is that there might be a 2K Alumni group formed in the future. Here are links to check out the past few years of the Class of 2K websites, books and members:
www.classof2k14.com
www.classof2k15.com
www.classof2k16.com
www.classof2k17.com
(Class websites from 2K13 and earlier are no longer available.)
Class Mission Statement:
The Class of 2K is a community of YA/MG debut novelists banding together to use group synergy to promote their books. Typically, group activities include developing common promotional materials (website, blog, other social media, postcards, brochures, etc.); creating press releases and/or hiring a group publicist; forming panels to speak at conferences; and supporting one another while sharing information about the publishing world as we discover it.
We actively encourage applications from Authors of Color and #OwnVoices authors.
Membership Requirements:
1. This must be your first book in YA/MG fiction, and your book must be scheduled for release in 2018.*
2. Your publisher must be listed in Children’s Writers and Illustrators Marketplace or be an SCBWI PAL publisher. Also, your publisher must be based in the USA.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
