This is why I hope Twilight's sincerity to reach middle ground can at least resonate with Donovan.

Even though Twilight is a spy from the enemy's nation, I hope he knows that Twilight also hopes for peace.

Spy x Family Ch. 110: Is Donovan Desmond a Mind Reader and Most Importantly, Is Twilight Doomed?

Nah.

Twilight isn't doomed, this isn't the end. Calm down, there's no need to panic about that.

Think about it for a second, if Donovan Desmond could read minds, the SSS would have arrested Twilight the minute he said bye to Desmond on that first meeting.

A few months ago, when we saw a young Donovan Desmond appear, I did a poll/analysis about whether or not he could read minds.

Even after the most recent chapter, my opinion is still the same: No, he can't.

Some people think that maybe he can get a glimpse into people's past. Although that would be a super awesome power (and it would be one hell of a plot), I don't think it's the case, because that wouldn't really tell him much and I don't think it would have affected him to the point of forcing him to distance himself from everyone.

I do have a theory about him. I've mentioned it before but here it is again:

I think he can tell when someone is lying.

Yup. That's it. A human lie detector. It made sense a few months ago, it makes even more sense now.

It fits his personality, his fixation with liars as a child, it also fits the theme of the whole story (everyone is a liar in sxf, everyone has something to hide) and most importantly, it fits his behavior.

We know that Donovan Desmond did not initiate war with Westalis. Chapman was Prime Minister when the war started and Desmond followed after him. There's a big chance war ended while Desmond was in power. If I'm not mistaken, the war has been over for about 10 years. I have the feeling that Desmond may have launched Project Apple as a means to protect peace.

And how would someone who is obsessed with lies do that? Of course, by wanting to know how others really think at all times.

My guess is that he volunteered himself to participate in the experiments, that would also explain the scars he has on each side of his head (which he didn't have as a child). It's unlikely he was a war veteran, because politicians and people in office never go into a battlefield, so he didn't get those scars in battle.

I think he really tried to obtain mindreading abilities and he failed, but not completely.

Imagine how it would be to have that awareness of people lying ALL THE TIME. How awful it must have been for him to get this power and realize than even his family, the people he felt closest to were lying to him. I think that's the reason why he isolated from everyone. It also fits what Melinda describe in the last chapter:

Let's look at that Desmond family dinner from that perspective. He cannot read minds but he can tell his wife is lying (because she's scared of him and doesn't want to be there!). It also makes sense that Demetrius keeps his mind blank because he suspects his father knows what he's thinking, so he's train himself to not think in front of others.

His behavior shows a person who has completely lost faith in humanity. He pushed everyone away because he didn't want any more lies, and to protect himself but, by doing this, he also ended up hurting his wife to such an extent that she doesn't recognize him anymore.

Since another theme of sxf is getting closer to and relying on people while forming bonds despite their masks and lies, I can totally see this could be Donovan's story, also parallel to Twilight's by the way: You can distance yourself from others to protect yourself but it'll be a lonely life.

Yes, Donovan is safe, guarded from everyone's lies, but he's also missing out on his family's love and also on the possibility of changing the world for the best.

Twilight is going in exactly the opposite direction of him. He's becoming alive, tearing those walls down, learning to rely on others, and loving his family.

Another Important Thing to Consider...

Everyone is so worried about Donovan Desmond possible mindreading powers that no one has mentioned one very important thing: Twilight's purpose for Operation Strix!

THIS is what WISE and Twilight really want to do: to find information that would allow them to remove people who seek war from power.

It's one hell of a strategy and a tough one for sure. And I agree; scandal, especially in such a conservative society like Ostania could do a lot of damage to politicians like Desmond, parties like the National Unity Party, and institutions like the SSS.

It wouldn't surprise me if at some point in the story it actually works. However, I don't think Westalis is as clean as we think. Food for thought.

I still don't buy the "Donovan is an alien" narrative completely; I still think he changed after he secretly volunteered to be a lobotomy experiment subject, to get the superpower he wants to reach a greater understanding in humanity.

Although, if Endo really wish to introduce a terrestial being into this series, then, does that mean Anya's telepathic ability is really born from the lab's experiment? Is she born from the sperm of an alien?? Alien DNA recombination?? Lolol. *edit: this is just me hoping that Anya's telepathic ability was developed in vitro, bc the idea of those mad scientists opening up Anya's skull & cutting up her brain whe she was a baby is just sick beyond belief & i cant accept that.*

I am so so glad to see Fiona in this chapter, trying to extract extra info from Desmond's staff! It really hammers down how incredible this valuable opportunity is for Westalis. Great job Endo-san, for not forgetting to include this 👍

Then Donovan must've read Twillight's mind on their first meeting; his fake persona & and Operation Strix have already been busted.

Maybe this is not just a mere illustration inside Twillight's head, maybe this really IS Donovan's reaction when he find out about Operation Strix?? LMAO

Or maybe Donovan can only read minds to a certain extent –not fully like Anya, so maybe he can only get the gist of what people are thinking; so he doesn't know Operation Strix yet, but he knows that Twilight wants to extract some information from him.

(though I wanna add, even if Twillight is from the opposing country, I hope Twillight's sincerity to meet in the middle could reach Donovan too.)

I've known these theories for awhile, but could these be true afterall?? (We're already at this stage, but I still don't wanna assume fanons as canons.)

IF Damian —at the family dinner— was remembering Anya's confession that she can read minds, and he wished he could read what's on his father's mind too,

Does it mean Anya's telepathic ability is already busted by Donovan?

Combine that information from Melinda and information from Damian that Anya can read minds....

Funny thing is, Twilight himself has no idea about all this implication. He's a million steps away from Donovan.

This could very well escalate into the "war" of obtaining Anya as an asset. Maybe it'll still be light-hearted, like manipulating Damian's romantic feelings for Anya by inviting her to have dinner together, but still. At first, I thought Donovan might get Anya expelled from school because she's dangerous, but I figure she's just too valuable to be tossed away; it's better to keep her close while extracting info from her as much as he can. Or use her ability to the fullest.

At least Anya is now aware that Donovan has the same ability as her, so at least she can proceed with more caution now.

I hate seeing Anya being the only one aware of the whole situation & she struggles alone to keep it all together — like what she has done all this time. That's why I really want Anya to come clean with Twilight so he can at least get a picture of the whole situation he's facing right now, and protect her properly, but I know it'll massively shift the Forger dynamic we're used to. I have no idea how will Endo handle this development from now on.

I feel like the timeline for this just doesnt shake out for anya to have powers before donovan. Shes likely at least a year younger than Damian and presumably was still being experimented on as a toddler when she could remember enough to develop a fear of needles so I feel like that adds another two years. If Damian is 6-7, that would mean Donovan didn't have his procedure until 3 years ago and 2-3 years after Damian was born. 2-3 years just feels too long to say shortly after a birth... maybe Im thinking about time to much in developmental stages but I kind of imagine the first two years of having an infant feels pretty long, and 3 years ago seems to recent to be uncertain about?

Been thinking about Spy x family chapter 110 and this page caught my attention:

I know we've been trying to figure out how did Melinda, who seems normal and not evil, ended up with Donovan.

Many said arranged marriage or maybe she really was that bad, or just didn't care as long as she had power and status. But it seems he was good to her at some point? At least charming enough to marry her. He spoke to people, he made love to her at least two times and was normal and charismatic enough to get to chairman of his party.

Now, I'm assuming what Endo has been setting up from pretty much the first time Anya misses meeting Donovan and that he can also read minds. It's been pretty hinted through the plot so I'm gonna take it as a fact. Donovan can read minds, same as Anya.

And joining some dots here and there, Melinda can't recall the time it happened but I'm gonna throw a wild guess it happened after Anya got her powers. She was the guinea pig, it worked, and now they could do the same procedure on Donovan. That's just speculation though.

My real question is: did Donovan change as a side effect of the experiments or did he shut down after hearing what everyone thought of him, seeing threats and dislike everywhere? Is it a defense mechanism or something he can't control?

Anyways I really hope we get many more answers soon! I think Anya's backstory is close to happening and that will offer more answers about Donovan too.

If Donovan will truly shift his attention to Anya now, maybe Anya won't have to change class?

What if Donovan manipulates the school so that the students in "exceeds standard" class consist of, not just students from the highest ranking, but also, the students who get a stellar star?

(I know Eden Academy is prestigious and highly values integrity, but Donovan is literally the ex-Prime Minister and corrupt teachers like Mr. Swan are probably prevalent, too).

Because Anya got a stellar star in Classical language, maybe she'll get to be in the same class as Damian and Becky again?

Maybe Donovan will set this up so that DamiAnya can "naturally" get close. I mean, one of this story's theme is Cold War, so if Donovan wants to get to Anya, he'll find the most peaceful & subtle way to lure her in, right?

Maybe we will get more DamiAnya in the future,but at what cost 😭

*edit: wait. If the "the students in "Exceeds Standard" class only consists of students who get stellar stars, that means Anya will get separated from Becky, but she'll still sit with Damian in the same class. No Emile & Ewen who interrupt DamiAnya moment. In fact, this class will have Bill and Crowley in it too! And those boys treat Anya decently! Will romance gag shift from tsundere-romcom to the reverse-harem genre?? Lmao*

Twilight needs to clear his mind and remember in those war times,Franky said to him that laboratory even were using animals for their experiments, reading minds is not so far-fetched.

And more when Anya is right there.

Yeah he doesn't know Anya can read minds or that Bond can see the future but when we think he could put together the pieces of the puzzle for many issues, decides to underestimate the desire of bad people to win and do evil when they can do anything, overstepping limits.
