Kelso Theater Pub
Since 1997, the Kelso Theater Pub, in Kelso of all places, offered its patrons the opportunity to enjoy first-run movies in an atmosphere that goes beyond the usual multiplex. In addition to regular seating, there are several ouches in the balcony and tables everywhere. Beer is available to those of age, and everyone can order food from the snack bar. It's not your usual movie theater experience, but then, the Kelso Theater Pub is not your usual movie theater.
It was built in 1937, possibly on the site of a former funeral parlor (or another theater that burned down-take your pick). According to the owners, the back room had been used by undertakers at some point. The Southwest Washington Paranormal Researchers (SWPR) did some research into the history of the building, finding out that some time in the late 1950s or 1960s, a man was fatally shot in front of the theater.
SWPR has conducted several investigations there since 2005. The first time, the group experimented by playing music from various eras, to see if there were some way to get the spirits to interact with them. When they started playing 1930s music, they could hear and see someone walking around in the balcony. The group immediately started up the stairs to confront the figure, which, despite the dim lighting, some thought was a man. It moved back into the shadows, as if to run away from them. When the group reached the top of the stairs, they were alone on the balcony. They had a recorder going while this was happening, and when they listened to the audio playback, they heard a man's voice say, "I'm sure I am dead."
Customers have seen a woman in the upper floor of the theater and immediately know something isn't quite right, because she is transparent. She may also haunt the women's bathroom, where strange noises (not a bodily nature, mind you) have been reported, as well as stall doors moving on their own.
SWPR put alarms on the bathroom door so anyone touching the doorknob would set the alarm off. They also placed an audio recorder in the bathroom. The alarm went off once, and on playing the recorder back, the team heard the sound of the bathroom door opening and then a stall door slamming open and closed. No other sounds were recorded until the SWPR team arrived, and there was nobody in the bathroom when they investigated. So how did the intruder get out without opening the bathroom door again?
When SWPR member Kim Travis returned to her previous location, she picked up her recorder, which she had left on, and listened to the playback. A few seconds after she left, a voice said, "I'm cold," into the microphone. One researcher believed that they recorded another playful ghost, saying, "Spank him."
Then there is the mysteriously appearing money, which makes this a very welcome haunting to the few people who have reported money appearing in their pockets. One day a woman named Anna visited the theater. She was short on money, as evidenced by her empty pockets. Shortly after entering the Kelso Theater Pub, she put her hand in her pocket and found a $20 bill. A generous ghost!
