It's the 29th of February! Which means.....
🎉🎂 🍰 🎊
Happy 42nd birthday to Frederick from The Pirates of Penzance! Born in 1852, he would chronologically be 172 years old, but if you go by birthdays he's a lovely 42

I'm not even 25 yet and I can remember the seasons being significantly different in my lifetime. When I was a child, winters were always dry and blustery and summers had a fairly consistent pattern of storms. Now we're getting rain in winter, storms at the wrong time of year, and summer is drier than it should be. The rain during the colder months fuels plant growth which then burns much more fiercely in the drier summers. They used to have no issues doing control burns to prevent devastating bushfires, now there aren't enough days of suitable weather to do them and prevent disasters.
Climate denialism in the netherlands is so fucking funny like. Bro the floods. They’re coming

Today is Waitangi Day, and Māori rights are increasingly under attack
For those of you who don't know, the right-wing government of Aotearoa (New Zealand) is pushing to “reinterpret” Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), the foundational document of the country which provides for land rights and other important rights of Māori people. This is on top of repealing important social policies designed to improve outcomes for Māori and Pasifika people, and planning to remove te reo Māori language from official government contexts
On this Waitangi Day I want to extend my support and solidarity to all Māori here on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land, across the ditch in Aotearoa, and around the world
As we say here, always was, always will be. Sovereignty was never ceded.

ADHD hack for home composting: Bokashi buckets!
I care a lot about home composting (and it makes my regular bin waaaay less gross) but I find it really hard to empty my compost caddy regularly and it tends to get naaasty with flies and maggots and mould
Enter: ✨ the bokashi bucket ✨
A bokashi bucket uses anaerobic bacteria to ferment all kinds of food waste, before you bury it to finish the composting process. It's low-odour, can live in your kitchen, and, most importantly, doesn't need to be emptied often
All you have to do is put in your scraps, spray or sprinkle some starter culture, and then seal the lid tightly
Once you've filled your bucket, you leave it for two weeks (or longer) before either burying the contents or putting them in a traditional compost bin. During this time, you drain off the liquid every so often (and you can collect it to use as starter for your next bucket!)
It helps to have a second bucket so that you have one to use while the other is busy fermenting
I bought the 7L one from Urban Composter, but there are different ones out there and you can even make your own. Urban Composter also does a starter kit with two bins and some starter liquid. You can also find dried starter which has a similar texture to fine sawdust
You can also make your own starter culture quite easily. I'll put what I did under a read-more cause it's some real hyperfixation shit
For my starter culture I wanted to capture some Rhodopseudomonas palustris bacteria, which are pretty unique in that they can use four different modes of metabolism, two photosynthetic and two chemosynthetic. So I had to first get one kind of bacterial culture going based off something I knew would probably have the right bacteria, and then put it in an environment where only the bacteria that can use the other kind of metabolism will survive.
I used a two-pronged approach
For chemosynthesis, I made a fucked up sauerkraut by mincing together cabbage, salt, brown sugar, and raw brown rice, with some rain water, and putting it in a sealed jar in a dark place. (The cabbage and the brown rice contain the bacteria.) If you do this, remember to vent the jar every day to let out the built-up gases. It will smell funky and like fermentation.
For photosynthesis, I put some dirt and rain water in a sealed jar in the sun. This should smell inoffensive.
It's important to use rain water or distilled water, because you don't want the chlorine in your tap water killing your bacteria.
Then, once it looked like the chemosynthesis jar had eaten up all of the sugar (i.e. it had stopped producing so many bubbles) and the photosynthesis jar had some green visible, I swapped them around. I put the kraut jar in the sun, and added some sugar to the dirt jar and put it in a dark cupboard. From here, the dirt jar will start to smell funky too, as it starts to ferment the sugar.
Then, after they'd done some more bubbling away, I poured off some of the liquid and have been using it as my starter culture, to great success.

Music tag game, tagged by @yanderemika
rules: shuffle your 'on repeat' playlist & post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people 🎶
I just use VLC so I don't have an "on repeat" playlist, so I'll just shuffle ALL my music and give the first 10 that I've listened to recently or a lot over the past while
Niðurlút (feat. GDRN) by Hatari
CURLED IN by Jaguar Jonze
Rabbit Hole by Jaguar Jonze
Colours by Voyager
The Best Intentions by Voyager
Two Weeks by The East Pointera
Biðrüð Mistaka by Hatari
D'equi a Somió (live) by Felpeyu
Pound a Week Rise by Austral
Thylacine by Austral
So that's.. Icelandic techno-industrial (Harari), Aussie indie rock (Jaguar Jonze) and prog (Voyager), and Celtic traditional (The East Pointers—from Canada, Felpeyu—from Asturias in Spain, Austral—Australian). Which is a pretty good overview of what I have on high rotation. I've also been listening to some Angelique Kidjo, Inn Echo, Käärijä, and Noriko Tadano.
I'm gonna tag...... @vienna-salvatori @tiedpawslikeheraklescloak @thejadefwa @carrotsofthepirabbean @greenbeanssssss @kaoinim @boopbeep @partybarty @bee-of-swords @satanicspeaks (plus anyone else who wants to, no pressure of course)

Went to the Aus v Windies T20 tonight and it was a blast! Both teams played very well, and I have nothing but praise for Windies captain Hayley Matthews. When she got out (79 off 40, skied to cover, c. Litchfield, b. Brown), instead of going back to the change room, she joined the rest of her team under the gazebo by the pitch. She won player of the match, which I think was well-deserved. The Aussie bowlers were stunning as always, but the fielding did have a couple of fumbles (still a far cry from the poor fielding of 5 years ago) and there were a couple of silly run-outs
Took my new binoculars on their maiden voyage. I managed to see one of the bowled dismissals through them, which was very awesome
Pez still with her trusty, faded, faded helmet... it'll be a sad day if she has to retire that one
Experimented with taking some photos through the binoculars, cause my phone camera hasn't got the zoom you need for sports. Some of them turned it alright!
Even in their defeat, some of the Windies players still came to give autographs. Unfortunately I'm not sure whose is whose... And of course the Aussie players too, even some of the ones not playing tonight (spot Jess Jonassen's signature). There was one kid who was soooo pleased to meet Phoebe Litchfield, cause her name was Phoebe too

Disabled person here, yous need to stop using euphemisms like "special needs" and "handicapable". They're widely despised in the disability community because they're dehumanising, infantilising, and gloss over the reality of disability. While this post is about birds, using those terms here spreads them around and normalises them, making people more likely to use them to refer to disabled people.
Just say disabled. Disabled is not a dirty word.
#this is like.. the 3rd post about disabled birds I've seen using this kind of language#disabled is not a dirty word#ableism#ableist langauge#disability#disabled people obvs can use those terms to refer to themselves#but DO NOT use them to refer to other people#*especially* if you're abled#swooflia reblogs

I live in eastern Australia and the powerful owl here has a diet that's mostly flying foxes (a type of megabat) and possums. Here's a photo of one chowing down, if you're curious
I was lucky enough to see that owl in person, as it was nesting near me and I definitely recommend checking out the rest of that Flickr album for some fantastic owl photos, including fluffy babies
Do owls eat bats? With any degree of frequency?
Some do. Depends on species and how prevalent bats are in that region.
#owls#powerful owl#bats#i would post a pic but flickr wont let me save the image to my phone#swooflia reblogs
