Tastes Like shakkar sounds so good! What are your top 5 books with brown or desi characters?
I enjoyed Tastes Like Shakkar a lot more than I was expecting, and have relentlessly been shilling it ever since. It's such a solid romance, the sex was good, a lot of the desi family stuff (the concept of being a "family manager") really hit, but it never took away from the main romance. Also, it's always nice to feel "seen" in the books you read even though it's pretty rare for me, but since this was specifically about Indian-Americans in the NY-NJ area, I really felt that.
Here are books with desi rep apart from Tastes Like Shakkar that are in my top 5:
Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai: I debated putting my other fave by Alisha, Serving Pleasure, on here but Wrong to Need You portrayed a less-troubled desi family dynamic than Serving Pleasure so I'm picking this. Sadia is a widowed single mom grappling with her attraction to her brother-in-law, Jackson who's just returned after a self-imposed exile related to a mysterious fire. The restrained tension between these two is so hot (ok maybe not entirely restrained; she doesn't recognize him when he first returns and nearly has sex with him lol). Also, Sadia, like Jiya below, subverts the passive Asian woman trope on multiple levels, and based on the dynamic between her and Jackson.
I also liked how Sadia's large, close-knit Pakistani-American family was portrayed; they may not see eye-to-eye all the time, but they love one another and are willing to learn and compromise.
Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert: Zafir Ansari is truly a prince among men; him and Dani go viral for his rescue of her, and they start fake dating so his football charity can get some positive attention and donations. I like how Zafir was the romantic one among the two of them (and is a Bollywood romance fan, predictably), and is also great in the sack so... a winner, basically.
Also, Talia wrote this lovely exploration of grief (Zafir lost his dad and brother) and this really sweet relationship between Zafir and his SIL, and his family as a whole which I appreciated.
Sink or Swim by Tessa Bailey: I know Tessa has gotten a lot of flak for her portrayal of Latinx characters (which, deserved imo), and she's otherwise by and large stuck to writing white characters, but I can't deny she did pretty damn good job of writing Jiya and her family, who are desi, in this book. Here are my full thoughts on this.
The Roommate Risk by Talia Hibbert: Friends to lovers AND probably one of the only unrequited love books I'll ever recommend only because I love Jasmine so much (even while she's STRUGGLING to figure out that yes, Rahul has had feelings for her ever since she deflowered him on the... I wanna say library floor), and Rahul Khan is adorable and a stern, stern man who can absolutely get it. Similar to Zafir above, Rahul's dad also dies during the book (there's a lot of flashbacks) and Talia portrayed Muslim funeral customs and just the general family dynamics thoughtfully and in such an emotional way.
Hard Way by Katie Porter: lol my problematic fave because there are a few things that are just so weird in terms of rep: For one, the author keeps putting Sunita, the heroine, in "indian inspired" clothes, for example, some kind vaguely described professional suit inspired by a saree? Like, this woman is an attorney who works for a United States congressman. She's probably wearing a regular-ass suit like the rest of the people in that office. Also, her nickname in law school was the "Ice Queen of Bangalore" which was meant to be microaggressive, but the nickname literally makes 0 sense to me since she was raised in AMERICA, and considering half the Indians I know can't make the connection between being Kannadiga and possibly being from Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, what are the chances these white mfs can, right? And the weird thing is, she narratively sort of "reclaims" her nickname, but it was such a cringe one to begin with and I don't even know why the authors bothered to put it in in the first place.
BUT Sunita is the only Kannadiga heroine I've ever read (I am. kannadiga, to clarify), she's a martial artist, she's struggling to work out her marriage with her husband (I'm a sucker for that shit), she's good with being kidnapped and zip-tied straight from the grocery store by her husband because it's a mutual fantasy, and she attends yakshagana performances (also very personal to me and my family)! Do you know how rare it is to see any of these things as far as brown heroines go? Maybe I have a lower bar for South Asian rep because there are so few romances that have South Asians who don't hate themselves/the culture AND have good sex scenes, but hopefully that will change as time goes on.

Meet the Booklr
Is that even a thing, a Booklr? Well, I guess it is now. Nice to meet ya, my name is Meghan. Here are three fun facts about me:
I have dual citizenship in Ireland and America. I am born and raised in NJ, USA
I love to knit, my grandma taught me, but I'm too afraid to learn how to crochet.
I absolutely love ice skating and swimming; I hate the winter and snow and love the summer. Even though I know how to ice skate, I don't know how to roller-skate/rollerblade, which apparently is surprising to people
I love physical books and kindle books. (why are kindle books becoming the same price or more as a physical book?) My favorite genres are romance and mystery, I am getting into psychological thrillers and romantasy genres.
My favorite authors/books:
Fourth Wing b Rebecca Yarros
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas
House Rules by Jodi Picoult
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
I love to read on my free time and watch crime shows. Monday through Friday, 7 am-3 pm, I am a high school English teacher.
What is your all time favorite book/author?

Reasons To Attend Pre-K in Aberdeen and Hazlet, NJ
Summer is fun! Having the children run as much as they want and get into trouble is not going to do, though. Keeping track of them when the schools and nurseries are closed is essential. The parents find allowing their children to go to the nearby summer camp in Aberdeen and Hazlet, NJ, an ideal way to remain focused on their responsibilities without being concerned about the kids. Interestingly, security is not the only plus at such camps. Instead, multiple activities are organized for specific age groups that simultaneously keep young individuals busy and happy. Entrusting the children to the care of teachers and caregivers of a reputed school or PreK in the area can serve the purpose admirably.
The idea is not to have them out of the hair and enjoy some respite from the busy schedule either. The children are thrilled at the thought of attending the camps during summer. The benefits vary, with the following being most appreciated:
· Socializing- Meeting and interacting with other children at the camp can help them connect with their peers and children from diverse backgrounds. Friendships are formed quickly and hugely appreciated by the kids and their guardians. The camp may be the only place to help the kids get to meet other children. Being out of adults' watchful eye is a relief to most of them! Close interaction and companionship can help them develop a host of social skills that will be helpful in the future.
· Physical Exercise- It is a worrying factor for parents to find their kids engrossed in movies and gaming. With no physical exercise, such kids tend to become obese and may develop behavioral problems along with vision issues. Sending away to the summer camp can simultaneously be a delightful experience for the children and parents. There are many opportunities to indulge in physical exercises outdoors at the summer camp. From riding, cycling, swimming, and rock climbing, the activities can be enjoyed by all kids who are likely to discover their hidden potential. The time spent at the camp is a fruitful and enjoyable one. The children not only get plenty of physical exercise but can test their mental abilities courtesy of games
· Personal Growth- Almost all summer camps are focused on a particular theme. This makes it easier for the parents to decide whether the camp would be useful for their children. Moreover, the child at the camp will not only have fun and be entertained but will also face many challenges to overcome and learn new things. Apart from learning new skills and gaining information, the child will understand the value of teamwork. Leadership abilities may also be discovered with problem-solving and exploration of interests being ensured.
Enrolling a child of 4 years into a well-reputed pre-K in Aberdeen and Hazlet, NJ, is essential to get an edge over other children when it is time for formal education.

New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation:
On this day lost, but not forgotten. Joseph Peter Colasurdo was born October 18, 1947. His home of record is Edison, NJ. He served in the US Army and attained the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4). His tour of duty began on November 30, 1968. On January 3, 1969, at the age of 22, Joseph Colasurdo was killed in action..From his sister Delia Landolfi:Joe was the only son of Louis and Lucille Colasurdo. As a child he was always in the woods hunting, fishing, and trapping. He Learned how to swim in the Raritan River. His dog was named Missy. Whenever he took her hunting he always had to carry her across the brook. Missy didn't like to get her paws wet.When he was twelve years old he delivered newspapers. He had many friends and everybody loved him.Joe was Catholic and went to church on Sundays and made his communion and confirmation. He also attended Bible School in the summer.He went to his senior prom and graduated from Edison High School. Joe worked two jobs to pay off his car, a white Chevy.There was an elderly woman who came to his wake. She remembered him because she was walking home from the store one day when the bag of groceries she was carrying broke. Joey stopped and picked up her groceries and carried them home for her. She said that she didn't know Joe but that she remembered how he had helped her.Joey wanted to be a member of the VFW 3117 in Edison, New Jersey.While in the the 79th Engineer Group he helped construct a chapel. He died shortly thereafter at Cu Chi, Vietnam, January 3, 1969. He was 21 years old.Source: NJVVMF, Delia Landolfi.

My Typical Day
blog post submitted by DS
My days feel longer, now that it is summer, and might even be a bit busier. Since I am about to go to high school, I must prepare for all sorts of things that I have never heard of before. The freedom in middle school is going to be well left behind as I continue into the depths of high school. For example, I am trying to prepare for the SAT and the PSAT which are one of the most important tests in our lives. Stress feels like a daily force, being dragged and stuffed into our faces. I feel that freedom from a few years ago was much more better than the feelings I have now.
I also do a lot of exercise. I am in a swim team called Scarlet Aquatics and they are a fast team. I try my best with all of the four different types of strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. It gives me time to think, my body is moving on its own accord while my brain reflects on everything that I have been doing. The cold frigid water gives me comfort even though to some people it does not. My repetition as I breathe in and out makes me calm and feel in control.
My daily schedule goes like this: I wake up at 5 to 8 AM and either do my homework or get ready for swim practice. I continue on with my day either having a tutor or swimming. As my day goes on, I go outside and sometimes play some basketball. Then I come inside, do a bit of homework and then play games. I like to play Fortnite or Minecraft. After I play for a bit with my friends, I go to sleep and repeat that for the next day. My life almost feels long and boring nowadays.

Disclaimer: Am 6w7 613 so/sp ISFJ (at least for now.)
I have a few different “is this x behavior” scenarios below.
===
The ENTJ tendency to date someone for the first time, not talk to them when they break your heart, then 9 months later realize they’re the only person in town you trust to talk about personal stuff and begin talking to them again like nothing has happened. <- often NJ types do not change their mind easily; their impression of someone tends to stay fixed, unless something outside themselves shakes them up -- so if they have been burned by someone, they are far less likely to give them a "second chance" than a Ne user. But ETJs also struggle to accept their emotions as valid or important (or anyone else's), so they might act as if nothing has happened because in their mind, it wasn't important anyway, and not consider the awkwardness on the other person's part.
===
The 6w7 with heavy frustration influence tendency to have imaginary arguments in your head with somebody, defending yourself against imaginary arguments with real people which will probably never happen, JUST in case it comes up. <- yup, that's 6. Proactively thinking they have to 'defend' themselves and reacting against their own mind, being constantly on the "offensive/defensive" line.
Something that helps me is to ask myself -- so what?
If I am wrong, so what? If I make the wrong choice, so what? If I don't want to do this, so what? What happens? Defending yourself is optional. You don't have to do it. You don't even have to explain if you don't want to. Let that sink in, before you go on another imaginary boxing match with people who don't exist. Choose to not engage. It is amazing and so freeing not to have your mind constantly spinning with excuses, justifications, and arguments. Just... let it be still.
It doesn't mean the instinct isn't there, just that we don't have to participate in it. I ran into someone the other day who was wrong about me, and although I did spin the wheel for a little bit (why would he think that about me?), ultimately I chose not to engage. He can think the wrong thing about me; so what?
===
The INTP tendency to be upset that a break in school is coming up because without a schedule for each day they’re afraid nothing will happen & they’ll stay inside and stagnate.
Hahaha. This sounds like the withdrawn triad, since it isn't occurring to them if they want things to happen in their life, they have to make them happen. They could just, you know, go outside? Like, your life is yours, man. Spend your school break learning about new stuff, going to the library, or watching bad television -- who cares? External structure is great, but if not having it bothers you, make up your own! Have initiative and decide what you want to do and go do it.
===
The IFJ tendency to go back and forth on whether you’re really an extrovert (this is me.) Specifically, I don’t feel right identifying as an ESFJ or extrovert because people would expect me to be high-energy, always enjoy meeting new people and going to crowded events, and I usually don’t.
It's interesting how this reads. Give it another read. Notice anything? Because people would expect me to...
Just curious. How much of your internal dialogue and focus goes to other people and their expectations of you? That's the crux of the matter in a nutshell. EFJs think about this constantly. It's the air they breathe and the water they swim in. All their thoughts are about people, about their role in people's lives, about what people expect of them, about how to engage with other people, be there for them, seeing others as an extension of themselves. It's less about being social or animated or extroverted in a traditional sense, and more about this constant others-referencing that keeps them motivated to think about others and disinclined to care about their own needs. As a social 6 in particular, there will be lots of thinking about everyone's welfare, doing what's best for all involved, maintaining connections, keeping everyone safe, etc. More that than the individualized, more "me" focused social 6 thinking of an ISFJ, who worries more about practical concerns (Si) and their analytical process (grinding their wheels as they think, re-think, and re-think, over and over again). 6+ inferior Ne = I have to keep my cell phone charged in case someone calls me in the middle of the night to tell me someone died! 6+ ESFJ = there's twenty ways this could go wrong so I need to prepare for all of them and stay on top of this (EFJ desire for control).
But if I realize I don’t have any plans involving one-on-one time with people for the next 2-3 days, I tend to panic and reach out to individuals. [...] I’m EXTREMELY social and people-driven.
You may have just answered your own question. ESFJ.
But I noticed lately that I’ve been sort of doing “quantity over quality” and not getting a lot of depth with people, and spent around 5 days without structured social plans (I’m also sick and jet lagged so was recovering.) It was nice, it felt like getting in touch with myself again.
If it takes being sick and tired to make you slow down and have less room for people in your life, which allows you to get re-centered, this indicates this is a forced process -- an extrovert who doesn't take the down time they need to figure out what they want, because their entire life revolves around their family and friends. EFJ, in short.
I’m unclear if I’m secretly a shy ESFJ all this time or an ISFJ who had a very social era which tired me out a bit. <- why assume a true introvert could become an extrovert for a long time? go with the simpler explanation here. "My life is all about people" = EFJ. :)
===
What is intuition?
I feel like I have three main ways in which I acquire knowledge:
1. I learn or experience it directly (brussels sprouts tend to be better baked for around 25 minutes than 20 or 30)
2. I feel an emotion, which isn’t an “experience” but is knowledge (I hate when people ask questions of others they don’t mean, or I really like learning about smell)
3. I do deductive reasoning to come to a conclusion I wasn’t told directly (these two people are looking at each other a certain way and seem unusually interested in each others’ lives; they want to date. Or, this person is lonely, they have a certain sadness to them when they talk about social things in the past.)
These three methods for me line up with sensing, feeling, and thinking. Intuition for me is the “none of the above;” i.e. I feel weirdly confident something is true despite having no observations, lines of reasoning, or emotions which line up with that conclusion, and can’t figure out why I think that. Thinking can resemble “intuition” for me sometimes in that I can come to conclusions which surprise others as insightful, but I KNOW how I figured that out because I could list the reasons if needed.
Intuition is ideas like “I have a feeling that I would really enjoy visiting Georgia someday” even though I don’t know much about it, or “I have a feeling going to this new school would solve my current social stagnation.” Recently I’ve been struggling with feeling convinced that my partner doesn’t want to be with me anymore, and I have NO idea where it’s coming from. It doesn’t feel like the usual emotional insecurity “maybe-maybe not what would I do,” it just feels like “this is probably true; better prepare.” Logically, I have no reason to be right. How do I know if intuition is true or when I should put any stock in it at all?
Intuition is assumptions without proof, some of which turn out to be accurate and others which do not. Intuition is just knowing that you should try this, or that it's going to work out, and giving it room to unfold by believing in it.
Regarding your relationship, as a 6 you need to be mindful of the fact that you are looking for something going wrong in a relationship, for warning flags, for signs of disinterest or boredom, because you are anxious about losing the connection. 6s project their insecurities onto their partner and assume the worst (my fear of them losing interest in me makes me convinced they are losing interest in me!). The best way to clear the air is -- ask your partner if you are okay. Get it out into the open. If they are on their way out the door, it's way better to rip of the band-aid so you can process it now, instead of thinking about it, watching them for signs it's going to happen, and waiting for the bomb to drop.

░ DETAILED BIOGRAPHY .
Naomi was given up for adoption the day of her birth at Gotham Memorial Hospital. She never knew her parents and they’ve never tried to reach out. She was brought up in a group home after several failed foster situations. Most of the homes were abusive, and she had to grow up very quickly. Through the years, computer became her escape and she fell into hacking, which became a profitable skill. Able to save a bit of money from jobs, Naomi was able to create decent life for herself after leaving the group home at eighteen. Most of the jobs require her to work outside of the law, but she’s always able to justify it and had evaded capture so far.
