Tribute day to Oshun

History: Oshun was one of the founding members of the SWG, and even though she turned down becoming a moderator on multiple occasions, she was one of the group's most active members, known best for her gently comic romantic stories, many of them slash stories, and her character biographies. Oshun dedicated her life to political activism, and this shows in her fanworks, which imagine an equitable world where love reigns supreme. Likewise, she challenged prejudice in fandom without much fanfare, letting her exceptional fiction and research writing stand on their own.

Hello hello! So, the Silm server that I joined awhile back regularly does little writing events that I've been participating in and today was another one! I ended up quite liking how this little thing turned out so I thought perhaps I could share it here? (Please go easy on me, this is the first Silm thing I've posted in public. 😅) Written for the SWG server using this prompt:

The stars know everything, So we try to read their minds. As distant as they are, We choose to whisper in their presence.

It is never truly dark in Valinor.

The light of the Trees does not illuminate all of course. There are distant lands to the north and south, too far from the great hill of Ezellohar to witness that radiance. There are lands beyond the Pelóri where the mountains cast too grand a shadow. There are islands off the coast where the rains never cease and the mist obscures all but the faintest of rays. But for much of the blessed land of Aman, there is Light.

There are some times Finwë wishes there was not.

It is not regret that belies such feelings, never that. He remembers with clarity the wild lands beyond, the dangers the Quendi had faced on their long journey westward that he still shudders to think on. If he is sure of anything, it is that he had made the correct choice in leading his people here, to this bountiful land where no harm may befall them. No, it is not regret that twists his heart in longing for that which was. It is merely… remembrance.

He remembers the stars most fondly of all, those gleaming pinpricks of light overhead, the only light in all the world. He remembers the songs of praise, the starlit dances, the shadow upon the landscape before the Treelight had set upon him and obscured all in radiance. He remembers the flowers that had bloomed in the darkness, reflecting the stars dim light back up at them, remembers the taste of the fruits that had grown only in the dark. He remembers the great mirror that was Cuiviénen, how the water's reflection doubled the stars above and below in a seemingly-endless tapestry. He remembers his Míriel, silver and shining, and the way her pale hair had captured the sparse glow of the heavens like a quicksilver stream.

But it has been countless years now since Finwë has last seen those stars as he remembers them. In Blessed Aman, only the dim outlines of those ancient constellations can be seen through the Mingling. Now, he has not felt true Darkness in so long, he fears he will forget its weight, the burden of it, but also the comfort. For there had been terror and tragedy and heartbreak in those dismal lands beyond the sea… but there had been beauty, too, and joy and a love ever-growing. He loved still the land of his birth, for all the trials he had faced there.

It is not regret that has him casting gray eyes skyward…

But his heart twists just the same.

The Silmarillion Writers' Guild! It's a Tolkien fandom archive, focused primarily on the Silmarillion but in recent years has a non-Silmarillion subarchive. It accepts all kinds of fanworks: fic, art, podfic, meta, etc. Fanworks do not have content or rating restrictions, save for no explicit art due to webhost requirements. There is a reference section and weekly newsletter. There is also an associated Discord server.

There are monthly challenges in a variety of formats and themes. They are always available for use, even after the challenge officially closes.

Beyond the Silmarillion is the subarchive for fanworks based on the rest of Tolkien’s works, including the non-Middle-earth stories like Roverandom and adaptations such as the movies or show. To post in this subarchive, you must first have on SWG either a minimum of five fanworks or 10,000 words of writing, whichever is reached first.

The SWG was started by @dawnfelagund in 2005 and the original version of the archive opened on eFiction in 2007. It is my Tolkien fandom home.

Every time in the past that I thought I was writing the most self-indulgent fanfiction ever, I was wrong. The fic I’m writing RIGHT NOW is the most self-indulgent fanfic ever. I will never top this 😂

(And I’m panicking because our bridge/saber training times got changed TODAY and we can’t get them to change back at this time… which has probably taken years off my life. Gawd I hope it all gets set to rights before we board tomorrow 🥲)

‘Twas the day before my voyage…

… and I’m feeling completely normal. Yeah.

But it’s probably a good time to share the OC/persona I crafted for the cruise! Here we go:

I’m going as a romance holonovelist originally from Naboo but living in Canto Bight where her publisher is. Her first two holonovels, “Jedi After Midnight” and “Bounty of Love,” did pretty well but not enough to give her bargaining power with her editor. Unfortunately, the First Order just purchased her publisher and she’s now under contract to write a romance holonovel about the First Order—which means she’s going to have to take advantage of the First Order’s investigation of the ship to do her research and find a way to fulfill her contract 😬.

Now I just have to survive another work day and do a VERY exciting SW thing tonight woooo.

On March 14, 2005, the SWG arrived in the small hours of the morning. It was still in very embryonic form, actualized only as a Yahoo! Group with no members and a series of very cringey posts on Dawn's LiveJournal (she had no idea how LiveJournal worked, having joined just that day to post these cringey posts in her insomnia-fueled effort to launch the SWG).

Twenty years later, this challenge debuted in recognition of two full decades of existence of the SWG. Each day, we will post an event that is an important hashmark on the timeline of the SWG's history along with three prompts that (at least in the challenge mods' mind) are associated with that event: a single word, a snippet of poetry (with a link to the full poem), and a public domain image. As always, you can use any aspect of the prompt to inspire your fanwork, including fragments of prompts or parts of the poem not included on the challenge page. The history snippets are fair game as prompts. You do not have to create or share your response on the day a prompt is posted. You can go back to past prompts, and you can stitch prompts from different days together into fanworks in cool and bizarre ways.

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 25 April 2025. (Note that this extends the challenge past the usual deadline of the 15th so that those who wish to create for the later prompts in the challenge have the opportunity to do so!)
