#I mean. she's an emotional child and should be allowed to cry #no need for shaming tears (via @officersnickers)
One of my favorite things about the series is how it doesn't shame any of the characters for crying, regardless of gender.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 55)
So I think Silent's ire is rooted in the simplification and sanding down of her character in order to more easily facilitate stock narratives/scenarios rather than the act of Emma crying at all, especially when it's such a significant moment of "The Day Emma Cried" short story from the first light novel (released back in 2018) that it's the focus of the title and it's laid out plainly in the text itself as something that both Norman and Ray recognize.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Norman notes it again years later during chapter 4/S1 episode 2.
Tumblr media
It's why his reunion with Emma in chapter 118/chapter 119 is such a striking moment with how her tears initially seem to flow without any preamble, only wordless disbelief as the magnitude of everything happening rapidly registered in her brain and a figurative switch has been flipped.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not that she doesn't experience those emotions, but that it's not how she generally regulates and expresses them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 3 | Chapter 49 | Chapter 109 | Chapter 110)
I'm assuming the fanfics in mind weren't having her cry as part of a character study examining the ramifications of how being thrust into a leadership role at such a young age and internalizing so much trauma while maintaining a front for the sake of others and leaned into being more tropey, which is something that people are free to write as an exercise in flexing their creative muscles, but it's not something I'm keen on reading either.
Alright, so something tha really bugs me in the tpn fandom, particularly in fanfics, is how they characterize Emma. There's a lot of fic I've read that make her a crybaby. Now there isn't anything wrong with a character being a crybaby but it isn't accurate for Emma. Yes she's emotional and sensitive and open about it, but you need to remember that she's canonly only ever cried 3 or 4 times in the span of 15 years.

Ghost Chase
More siren!Cas. Enjoy!
Now that things have calmed down somewhat – or at least people seem to have realized that most monsters just want to live in peace – Dean likes to believe that everything’s getting easier.
And then there are days like today.
Jody just called him. “I know how this will sound, but a school near my station seems to be haunted.”
“Haunted?” Dean asks, frowning. It’s his first free weekday in a while, and he hoped he could relax for a bit. And why should a ghost suddenly pop up? Rowena and Crowley have told him about ghosts, and how they were common back in the dark Ages when magic was more plentiful –
Oh. “I see” he says flatly.
“Yes, and now...” Jody suddenly laughs.
“Everything alright?”
“Yes, but you know how kids are. Half of them swear they’ll never set foot in the building again, and the other didn’t want to leave in the first place.”
Dean knows exactly which kind he’d have been. “Alright, I’ll ask around.”
Granted, “asking around” isn’t difficult these days. Most people he needs live right next to them.
First, he sends Cas a text to let him know what’s going on, then he makes his way over to Crowley. The demon has just completed one of his rituals and seems relaxed; good, considering Dean has no idea what to do.
“A ghost? A honest-to-God haunting? Squirrel, you never fail to surprise me.”
“Glad to be off service on that front, but still, I’d rather like to know what we’re supposed to do about it. Any failure to get rid of the ghost won’t look good, since the public will think –“
“Dean, Dean, Dean, you worry too much.”
He huffs. “I just want us all to be safe.”
Crowley’s eyes soften in a way he wouldn’t have thought they could when they first met. “Of course you do.” He clears his throat. “I mean your sort of good-good shoes probably needs everyone to like one another. That’s in your blood.”
“Right.”
“Drink?”
Dean accepts.
Crowley calls Rowena over, who arrives soon afterwards. She’s accompanied by Gilda. “I took the liberty to call her over. Ghosts are just another part of nature, albeit one that’s supposed to have ended already.”
Dean nods; really it’s not the most illogical thing he has ever heard, being married to a siren. “How can we get rid of it?”
“We can’t” Gilda sounds scandalized. “How would you feel if you were a spirit, just minding your own business, and then –“
“Gilda” Dean says, raising his hands. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like this. But it’s scaring the kids.”
“I understand” she replies softly. “I’m the one who should apologize. You’re not like me.”
He nods.
“Alright, so now that we are all one big happy family again –“ Crowley begins, but at that moment, Cas comes in.
“Cas?”
“I got Rachel to cover for me” he says. “The school – it’s one of those I spoke in.”
“This isn’t your fault, sunshine” Dean mutters, drawing him in for a kiss.
“Can you stop it? This is a demon’s house, I have a reputation to uphold –“
“Yeah, yeah, your Highness, that’s why you gave out candy to all the children who decided your house was cool-looking last Halloween –“
“That was in order to make sure everyone is safe, as you should –“
“Dean, Crowley” Cas interrupts them; he doesn’t get to speak further because the door opens and Sam waltzes in.
“I should start locking it again” Crowley muses as Dean asks, “Hey, Sammy, thought you had an important court date today?”
“I did, and I finished it, then I saw Jody had called. What’s this about a ghost?”
After they’ve explained, Sam says, “SO we can’t really banish it.”
“Lore says they are brought to a place of eternal torment if we do that!” Gilda sounds shocked, but immediately calms down. “It’s one of the stories we grow up with.”
“I love it already” Crowley replies.
“Okay, so no banishing” Dean decides. “Any idea how to move it?”
Five pairs of eyes turn to stare at him. “What? It would be much better if we could bring it somewhere safe, and not –“
“Lorelei” Crowley says slowly, “I take it all back. You can kiss him for that.”
Cas frowns. “It’s possible.”
“It’s ingenious” Gilda decides while even Rowena looks impressed.
“No offense, but it’s really not that hard a plan to come up with” Dean says.
“You don’t understand. We monsters – we aren’t deficient, but we are set in our ways when it comes to many things. You humans are more flexible” Gilda explains.
Crowley smirks. “I assume you wouldn’t tell us just how flexible this particular one happens to be, Cas –“
“Crowley!”
First of all, they have to find a proper environment for a ghost, one where they’ll feel comfortable in, and so they venture deep into the woods to find the darkest corner they can.
Dean and Cas are strolling along hand-in-hand; now and then either of them chases a few pixies away. “Not exactly how I pictured my day off, but hey, what can you do.”
“I’m sorry” he answers. “I know you just finished that long prospect, and –“
“Hey, I get to take a walk with my husband, who I thought I wouldn’t see until evening” Dean kisses his hand.
Cas’ eyes are glowing, but there’s no one to ensnare here, and he hasn’t needed magic to draw in for years now. “It’s a beautiful day.”
“It is. Problem is – oh wait, let’s go deeper. Didn’t Rowena say this was the oldest part of the forest?”
Cas nods. “Means there could be some strange influences at work –“
A twig behind them snaps. Dean sighs. “Come on.”
Crowley appears next to them. “How did you know it was me?”
“There’s no nodded to protect the others, but like Cas said, anything could happen here.” Not that he’s not thankful. God knows how many scrapes Crowley got them out of since they met – that said, he also got him into enough, but then – that’s just their normal, now.
“Oh nice. Really gloomy” Crowley says and Dean becomes aware that the temperature around them has dropped considerably. He shuffles closer to Cas.
“What the –“
“Old magic. Witches must have been casting spells in this part of the woods for centuries.”
Dean shakes his head; his thoughts are turning a little sluggish. “And what exactly –“ He stops talking when he realizes he’s slurring.
“Oh” Crowley realizes, “Of course a human would be more affected.”
Cas squeezes his hand. “I’ve git you, my love, I’ve got you:”
And he has, Dean realizes, suddenly finding it easier to breathe and think again. There’s just something about – “The snare is working on me again, huh” he says.
“No. I am simply suing my magic to counteract the one’s that bruised deep into this forest.”
He nods and suddenly stands still. “Guys, not that I am not flattered you were worried about me, but does anyone else think this would be the perfect place for a gloomy mansion?”
They look around. Some part of Dean is surprised that there isn’t a creepy house already there.
“You are right” Crowley decides, “I’ll get on it immediately.”
Turns out, chasing the ghost of a Victorian scullery maid through the school (and how did that happen, exactly? Doesn’t seem to Dean like there’s much of a history of Victorian scullery maids in the USA) isn’t as easy as it sounds, and it’s pretty difficult to figure out what she’s clinging to. According to Gilda, there has to be something, and they only have to take it with them and out it in the mansion Crowley’s building at the moment to move the ghost.
“Rowena” Dean says into his earpiece, “Any idea where it is?”
“I am casting the spell, dearie – second floor” she tells him, and he meets up with Sam, Cas and Gilda.
Thankfully, the spell makes the object glow, so –
Dean groans. “Seriously? We have to tell the school they have to get rid of their beloved soccer trophy?”
“We’ll have to try, at least.”
And so the rest of their afternoon is spent arguing.
Dean will later admit that it does help that Crowley can flash his demon eyes when principals get enraged.
“So now we’ve got a haunted mansion in our neighbourhood too” Dean muses that night. “Adds a certain flair, don’t you think?”
“I have a feeling we’ll have to be careful around Halloween, lest anyone sneak in” Cas replies, smiling. “But yes, I can’t deny that it seems to fit.”
“Well then, since my day off was interrupted” Dean says, moving close to him “I think we should –“
All of a sudden, a violent storm breaks out. A quick glance out of the window proves that it only encompasses three or four houses in the street.
He catches his eyes and sighs. “Let’s check it out.”

Just Tell Her
characters/pairing: charlie bradbury x reader, sam winchester, castiel
word count: 1.8k
tags: swearing, high school au, y/n is awkward and has a crush, sammy and cas are disgustingly in love and totally ship y/n and charlie, no beta
Sam sat down next to me in the stands just as the lacrosse game began. “Um, you need to be a little more subtle about staring at her, y/n, if you’re literally so scared to tell her that you like her.”
I snapped my gaze away from Charlie, laughing awkwardly, my breath visible in the cold air. “What? Who’s staring? I’m not staring!”
Sam sighed as Cas sat down next to him and mumbled, “Yeah, you are, y/n/n.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’ve told you guys. Charlie likes Gilda.”
“Pretty much everyone has or had a crush on Gilda at some point.” Cas shrugged. “It’s a fact.”
“Exactly. I don’t have a fucking chance against her.”
“Yeah, well, this dork had a ridiculous crush on Gilda once upon a time and now he’s my boyfriend, so take that as you will.” Sam smirked, tangling his fingers with Cas’s. Cas scooted closer to him and grinned at me.
“Yeah, but you’re cute and smart, Sam. I’m just an awkward nerd who’s even more awkward when I’m talking to people I don’t know very well.”
“Pfft, have you met Charlie?” Cas laughed. “She’s as much of a nerd as you are at least… Also, yes, Sam is definitely cute and smart, but you’re gorgeous and smart too.”
Sam cleared his throat, pretending to look annoyed. “What? So I’m just cute but she’s gorgeous?”
Cas rolled his eyes. “I changed my mind. You’re ugly as hell, Sam Winchester.”
Sam wiped a non-existent tear away. “H-How could… I th-thought I meant something more to y-you?”
I faked a gag. “You guys are disgustingly cheesy and oddly adorable.”
“You were saying?” Cas pulled Sam’s head down for a kiss, giving me a teasing look from the side.
“Fuck you. Both of you.”
Sam broke away from Cas’s lips and turned to me with a laugh. “No, but he’s right. You are gorgeous and smart. Besides, we were all pretty close with Charlie a couple years ago. So that would make the talking thing easier maybe?”
“Yeah, Sam. A couple years ago.”
“Come on, y/n. Lemme just invite her to sit with us.” Before I could stop him, he was up and heading down to Charlie.
I tried to focus on the game, but I felt too distracted.
Charlie glanced up from where she’d been sitting alone, closer to our team, as Sam asked her to join us. Her eyes found Cas first, before slipping to me. I waved awkwardly, attempting a smile.
She smiled back, getting to her feet and following Sam up the bleachers.
“Dude, y/n. Her face definitely lit up when she saw you,” Cas whispered, leaning closer to me.
“No, it didn’t,” I snapped back. Even if he was right, I was gonna deny it because why would I get my hopes up like that?
“It definitely did.” He grinned.
I was about to say no again, but Charlie and Sam reached us. Sam dropped down to his seat between Cas and me again, and Charlie awkwardly smiled and bounced up onto the balls of her feet, looking too adorable to be humanly possible. “Hi, guys.”
“H-hey, Charlie. Uh, you can sit here.” I scooted a little closer to Sam to give her some space.
She nodded and sat down next to me. “Thanks, y/n.” She leaned forward to look at Sam and Cas, who were very noticeably pressed way closer than normally necessary. Not to mention the fact that Cas totally had his hand in Sam’s sweater pocket, their fingers probably intertwined again.
“Cheesy as fuck,” I mouthed at Cas who feigned offense.
“It’s cold, damn you.”
“So, uh, you guys are finally together?” Charlie squeaked out.
“Y-yeah. Uh, me and Cas are finally together.” Sam’s face flushed, just like it did every time someone mentioned it, and I smirked at Cas behind Sam’s back, as he moved even closer to Sam, which I didn’t think was possible.
I looked at Charlie and sighed. “Please excuse them. They’re grossly sappy and disgustingly in love. Don’t be surprised if they suddenly start making out in the middle of the lacrosse game.”
“Ew, what?” Sam gave me a look. “We’ve never done that!”
“Yet…” Cas added, his voice quieter, but we all heard it.
I rolled my eyes, Sam blushed bright red again, and Charlie snorted. I tried not to glance at her but my gaze met hers and now she was the one with her cheeks turning pink. I couldn’t hide my small smile before looking back to the game as the our team scored a shot.
I nervously tried to make small talk with Charlie as we kept watching the game. Cas and Sam helped as much as they could until they both “subtly” left us alone to get snacks, and I wanted to murder them. Sam just gave me an innocent smile as they tripped their way down the stands.
I looked down at my lap and messed around with the rips in my jeans, feeling shy all over again.
Charlie shivered next to me and I glanced at her. “Hey, you cold?” She was wearing a thin jacket and a scarf but it wasn’t enough for a chilly night like this.
“I’m o-okay,” she mumbled, crossing her arms. “Really.”
I shook my head. “Here, you can take my jacket. I have a really warm sweater on.” She shook her head, but I was already taking it off and handing it to her. “Take it, Char.”
She smiled at the nickname I used to always use for her as she hesitantly grabbed the jacket from me. “Thanks, y/n/n.” Her somewhat warm fingers brushed against my cold ones and her eyes widened, filling with unnecessary guilt. “Your hands are freaking freezing. You sure you don’t want your jacket?”
“I’m good.” Glancing away, feeling flustered by how intensely she was looking at me, I laughed. “I guess Cas had the right idea with holding hands with Sam.”
Charlie pulled on my jacket and nodded, holding her hand out to me suddenly. I looked up in surprise. She was blushing again, but she tentatively slipped her fingers between mine. “If you don’t mind,” she said, her words coming out in a whisper.
“N-no. It’s okay.”
The boyfriends™ came back to our seats right after, and Cas, leading Sam, wiggled his eyebrows teasingly when he saw us holding hands.
“Look who’s being smart and keeping their hands warm,” Sam mumbled, bumping his shoulder against mine as he sat down, making me scoot closer to Charlie, trying to hide a smirk.
“Shut your mouth, Winchester. Where’s the food?”
Cas handed me a pretzel and a plastic cup of hot cider. “You guys can share that, and me and Sam have our own. Sorry we didn’t get more, but we’re just broke high schoolers.” He laughed.
“Pfft.” I rolled my eyes. “This is plenty.” Charlie nodded in agreement as she carefully took the cup from me before I spilled it all over myself.
We were sitting pressed against each other now. Not as close and Sam and Cas kept sitting, because I still wasn’t sure how that was possible, but comfortably close.
I took a bite of the warm pretzel and groaned. “Okay, but this is really good, you guys. I haven’t had time to eat since this morning, so, like, wow.”
Charlie giggled next to me, and Cas shared a look with Sam. I decided to ignore them and held the pretzel up to Charlie, letting her take a bite too. “Mm, that does taste amazing,” her voice was soft and I leaned closer to her to hear her.
“Told you.” My gaze accidentally dropping down to her chapped lips. I looked away as soon as it happened, and I wasn’t sure if she’d realized.
Cas was leaning against Sam, mumbling something against his neck, and I sighed, wishing I could be that chill with Charlie. But they’d been awkward for a while, pretending they didn’t like each other or something, before they finally just admitted it. I just hoped it wouldn’t take me as long to admit it.
After the game, Charlie and I got separated from Cas and Sam. When we made it to the Impala (I hadn’t figured out how Sam had convinced Dean, okay?) Cas was pressed against the passenger door making out with Sam.
I groaned and cleared my throat, rubbing my eyes. “Hey, dudes, my mom already texted me.”
Cas let go of Sam’s hair to hold up a finger in a wait a second motion, and I shook my head, turning to Charlie. “This is why you don’t third wheel, Char. You might not have a ride home in the end.”
She grinned. “Well, we can third wheel together if you want. I can take you home.” She grabbed my wrist and nodded her head to the other side of the parking lot. “My car’s that way.” I looked down at her hand in surprise, and her grip loosened. “Sorry, I jus-”
“It’s okay,” I interrupted, sliding my hand up to wrap around hers.
She smiled shyly and we walked to her yellow Gremlin.
I gave her directions as we drove, and it was kinda awkward but it was also kinda okay. We ended up talking about what we’d been doing the last two years and school and what we wanted to do someday.
“Oh, this is me.” I nodded at the house on the left and Charlie pulled over. “Uh, thanks for the ride.”
“For sure.” She nodded and I gave her an awkward half hug across the bench seat. I started pulling away when her eyes met mine and I froze.
This time her gaze dropped down to my mouth before coming back up to my eyes. I’m not sure I was breathing as she slowly leaned closer. I hesitantly brought my hand up to her hair, tangling my fingers in her red waves. She took that as an okay and brushed her lips against mine.
Her lips were soft and I kissed her again. Her arm wrapped around my back, pulling me closer.
My phone buzzed, but I ignored it, not wanting to get pulled out of what felt like a dream. It buzzed two more times and I groaned, breaking the kiss and pulling it out of my pocket. “Ugh, I’m sorry. It’s my mom. Again.”
She shook her head and glanced down at her lap with a small smile before looking back up at me, biting her lip. “It’s okay. Really.”
I leaned forward and kissed her one more time before opening the door, laughing at the look on her face after the sudden kiss. “Thanks, Char. See ya at school?”
“Uh, yeah. See ya.”
I shut the door and waved as she drove off. I shivered, walking across the lawn to the front door. The wind was freezing but my face felt flushed, and I was feeling fucking giddy. I hid my grin as I opened the door, not wanting to explain why I was smiling like an idiot to anyone, because this was my thing to think about.
