The Mother Ganga

I’ve been a little reluctant to write about our trip to Varanasi—because I’m not sure I can put into words how magical and wonderful it was.

David and I both had some trepidation about the trip. I know I didn’t want to leave India AGAIN without having visited that oldest and holiest of cities (for Hindus.) But we had read enough to make us nervous: the crowds, the dirt, the pickpockets, the cows, the bodies…you name it. So did those expectations make the reality even more wonderful? I’m not sure. But it was a visit I will never forget.

That Adam Grotsky, the Executive Director of Fulbright in India, loves the city and connected us with a hotel and a guide definitely helped. We arrived at the Ganges River View after a blessedly uneventful morning of travel (after the hassles of the day before.) The place is a historic home on the Assi Ghat that has been beautifully converted into a boutique hotel. The terrace garden outside our bedroom was full of flowers that were almost freakish in size (and gorgeous.)

After a little stroll down the ghats,

we met up with our guide Ajay to attend the nightly Arti ceremony on the bank of the river. It was one of the times when I was very grateful that I invested in custom ear plugs for this trip- the amplification was deafening. The ceremony was interesting—but frankly, it felt more like a tourist attraction than an actual religious ceremony (and the tourists were certainly there in throngs.)

The next morning, we met Ajay in reception at 6:30, and walked down the ghats to a waiting rowboat. For the next 45 minutes or so, we were rowed downstream as the river and the ancient city came to life. It was impossibly beautiful and absolutely magical.

Motorboats have pushed aside a lot of the rowboats—and later in the day the river is teeming with them. But Ajay loves the old ways- and I am so grateful. (My father would have loved this boat, and other old wooden boats we saw.)

We disembarked about halfway down the ghats and walked through the old city. We stopped at temples,

peered into shops,

met a guy cuddling his beloved cows,

congratulated a newlywed couple (traveling from temple to temple for blessings--with mother-in-law in tow),

visited a beautiful old mosque (with one of the most spectacular views of the Ganges)

and were welcomed into the historic home of a famous Varanasi playwright (1800’s) by his descendants for a traditional breakfast.

Ajay has an astounding amount of historical information to share about the city—and was the perfect tour guide.

One of our last stops was the main cremation ghat—and I was definitely my mother’s daughter at that point. I was fascinated. No pictures, of course, but let me describe:

We stood above on a terrace and looked down on about fifteen funeral pyres- some burning full force (with yes, a body inside) and some waiting to be lit. You hear bells, and then a group of men come into view below, carrying a body on a sort of stretcher. The body and face are covered in brilliantly colored cloths. The main mourner (usually the oldest son) has just had his head shaved. They move to the river, where they carefully submerge the body. They lift the stretcher and tip it to drain the water. Then they return to shore and place the body next to a pyre. Evidently, negotiations on wood, etc. will follow. We didn’t stay that long. But I will never forget it. The family will return after several weeks to collect the ashes, which will then be scattered on the river.

After that, we climbed into a motorboat for the ride back up the river (rowing UPSTREAM would take a very long time). I’m not always a fan of tours—I like to poke around myself. But for this city—it was the perfect choice (and if you ever go- I will put you in touch with Ajay!)

We dropped our things at the room and headed back out to have lunch with a fellow Fulbrighter Swasti Bhattacharyya and others from Benaras University, where she is hosted. Met some very cool people (including a theatre maker from CA who knows not only our friend Chandradassan from Kerala, but also our friend Dean Robinson from Ithaca!) After that, we crashed for a good afternoon nap, and then returned to a toy emporium that Ajay brought us to the night before. This place makes hand painted wooden images of the many Hindu gods and goddesses- and I only wish I had taken more pictures! What a fascinating place! Their work is gorgeous (and they train impoverished women as painters- currently employing nearly 40 women to help prepare 20,000 hand painted frames for the G20 Summit!) I felt like a little kid again walking around this shop. It is full of hundreds of unique, imaginative, and magical (yes, I’ve been using that word a lot) figures of all shapes and sizes.

I had vowed to only purchase textiles on this trip—but we couldn’t resist and will be bringing home a flying Hanuman and Ganga when we return to the States.

It was Swasti’s birthday, and we ended a perfect day with a terrific meal together at our hotel—and our host Prakash arranged for a birthday cake to top it off.

Next morning, we attended a free concert of classical Indian music and heard a pretty astounding 16 year old (!) classical singer. I took a million videos —I wanted my students at IC to see how this guy physicalizes the melody of this classical raga. (Video in separate post.)

After that, we were off to the airport—and (again) blessedly simple travel back to Amritsar. I think the gods had decided that one travel nightmare per trip was quite enough.

Someday, someway—I hope to return. One visit is not enough.

Dewan Pimpinan Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) Provinsi Jawa Timur (Jatim) menyerukan kepada umat Islam khususnya para pemangku kebijakan agar tak melanjutkan salam pembuka di berbagai acara dengan menyebut seluruh salam dari berbagai agama.

Penyampaian salam oleh para pemangku kebijakan, biasanya disebutkan satu persatu. Dari salam Islam, Kristen, Budha, maupun Hindu. Hal ini yang menjadi sorotan MUI Jatim. Dimana melalui KH Abdusshomad Buchori Ketua MUI Jatim, dinyatakan agar salam pembuka dilakukan sesuai dengan ajaran agama masing-masing. Atau tidak dicampur dan dilanjutkan dengan salam agama lainnya.

“Untuk umat Islam cukup ucapkan kalimat Assalaamu’alaikum Wr Wb. Agar terhindar dari perbuatan syubhat yang dapat merusak kemurnian agama yang dianutnya,” ucapnya.

Buchori melanjutkan, “Mengucapkan salam pembuka dari semua agama adalah perbuatan baru yang merupakan bid’ah yang tidak pernah ada di masa yang lalu, minimal mengandung nilai syubhat yang patut dihindari,” tegasnya.

Imbauan itu pun mendapat reaksi ramai dari warganet. Dimana, berbagai komentar meramaikan dunia maya terkait point ke-7 dan 8 dalam imbauan MUI Jatim. Tentunya reaksi warganet pun terpecah menjadi dua dalam menyikapi hal itu.

DukeCondet, misalnya, salah satu wargenet yang mendukung imbauan MUI Jatim. “Aqidah ga boleh diusik, karena Hukum Syariat itu udeh baku bersumber pada Qur’an dan Sunnah. Kalo mau salam netral, ye pilih aje yg netral. Gosah campur2 ajaran agama macem2. Kalo masih ngeyel juga, mending murtad aje sekalian. Daripade jadi orang munafik. Allah kagak rugi,” cuitnya menyikapi hal itu.

Imbauan dan pernyataan warganet yang mendukung itu, mendapat pernyataan berbeda.  Akun @HensuAja menyatakan, “Sebagai orang muslim rasanya kok lama-lama aku disuruh hidup di planet lain ya. Sahabat dan kerabatku tidak semuanya muslim dan kami nyaman bergaul saling membantu, saling mengerti satu sama lain. Lha kok ini MUI bikin yg muslim jadi serba salah di lingkungan pergaulan. Suek…,” cuitnya kesal, Minggu (10/11/2019).

@maskisun pun menyoroti imbauan MUI Jatim dengan lagi ramainya pemerintah menghadang paham radikalisme saat ini. “Pa kabar pemerintah yang mau memerangi radikalisme..? Kalo niat, coba mulai dari hal2 seperti ini dulu. Mungkin ini bukan masuk katagori radikal, tapi yg seperti ini bisa bisa jadi tembok pemisah antar umat di nusantara ini,” cuitnya.

Pro dan kontra memang kerap membayangi berbagai imbauan atau fatwa MUI selama ini. Dimana masyarakat kerap terpecah dalam menyikapi persoalan yang ditelaah dan menghasilkan fatwa atau imbauan dari MUI.

Lantas seperti apakah lengkapnya imbauan MUI Jatim terkait pengucapan salam bagi umat Islam yang termaktub dalam surat bernomor 110/MUI/JTM/2019. Berikut imbauan lengkap MUI Jatim yang diteken secara langsung oleh sang ketuanya, Buchori.

1. Bahwa agama adalah sistem keyakinan yang didalamnya mengandung ajaran yang berkaitan dengan masalah akidah dan sistem peribadatan yang bersifat eksklusif bagi pemeluknya, sehingga meniscayakan adanya perbedaan-perbedaan antara agama satu dengan agama yang lain.

2. Dalam kehidupan bersama di suatu masyarakat majemuk, lebih-lebih Indonesia yang mempunyai semboyan Bhinneka tunggal ika, adanya perbedaan-perbedaan menuntut adanya toleransi dalam menyikapi perbedaan.

3. Dalam mengimplementasikan toleransi antar umat beragama, perlu ada kriteria dan batasannya agar tidak merusak kemurnian ajaran agama. Prinsip tolerasi pada dasarnya bukan menggabungkan, menyeragamkan atau menyamakan yang berbeda, tetapi toleransi adalah kesiapan menerima adanya perbedaan dengan cara bersedia untuk hidup bersama di masyarakat dengan prinsip menghormati masing-masing pihak yang berbeda.

4. Islam pada dasarnya sangat menjunjung tinggi prinsip toleransi, yang antara lain diwujudkan dalam ajaran tidak ada paksaan dalam agama (QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 256); prinsip tidak mencampur aduk ajaran agama dalam konsep “Untukmulah agamamu, dan untukkulah, agamaku sendiri”. (QS. al-Kafirun [109]: 6), prinsip kebolehan berinteraksi dan berbuat baik dalam lingkup muamalah (QS. al-Mumtahanah [60]: 8), dan prinsip berlaku adil kepada siapapun (QS. al-Ma’idah [8]: 8)

5. Jika dicermati, salam adalah ungkapan do’a yang merujuk pada keyakinan dari agama tertentu. Sebagai contoh, salam umat Islam, “Assalaamu’alaikum” yang artinya “semoga Allah mencurahkan keselamatan kepada kalian”. Ungkapan ini adalah doa yang ditujukan kepada Allah Swt, Tuhan yang Maha Esa, yang tidak ada Tuhan selain Dia. Salam umat Budha, “Namo buddaya”, artinya terpujilah Sang Budha satu ungkapan yang tidak terpisahkan dengan keyakinan umat Budha tentang Sidarta Gautama. Ungkapan pembuka dari agama Hindu, “Om swasti astu”. Om, adalah panggilan umat Hindu khususnya di Bali kepada Tuhan yang mereka yakini yaitu “Sang Yang Widhi”. “Om”, seruan ini untuk memanjatkan doa atau puja dan puji pada Tuhan yang tidak lain dalam keyakinan Hindu adalah Sang Yang Widhi tersebut. Lalu kata swasti, dari kata su yang artinya baik, dan asti artinya bahagia. Sedangkan Astu artinya semoga. Dengan demikian ungkapan Om swasti astu kurang lebih artinya, “Semoga Sang Yang Widhi mencurahkan kebaikan dan kebahagiaan”.

6. Bahwa doa’ adalah bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dari ibadah. Bahkan di dalam Islam do’a adalah inti dari ibadah. Pengucapan salam pembuka menurut Islam bukan sekedar basa basi tetapi do’a.

7. Mengucapkan salam pembuka dari semua agama yang dilakukan oleh umat Islam adalah perbuatan baru yang merupakan bid’ah yang tidak pernah ada di masa yang lalu, minimal mengandung nilai syubhat yang patut dihindari.

8. Dewan Pimpinan MUI Provinsi Jawa Timur menyerukan kepada umat Islam khususnya dan kepada pemangku kebijakan agar dalam persoalan salam pembuka dilakukan sesuai dengan ajaran agama masing-masing. Untuk umat Islam cukup mengucapkan kalimat, “Assalaamu’alaikum. Wr. Wb.” Dengan demikian bagi umat Islam akan dapat terhindar dari perbuatan syubhat yang dapat merusak kemurnian dari agama yang dianutnya.

Delapan point imbauan MUI Jatim inilah yang kini ramai diperbincangkan warganet. Selain yang pro dan kontra, warganet lainnya yang sudah merasa capek dengan berbagai polemik, menyampaikan nada pesimisnya. “Bodo Amat !” cuit @ndaherdi.
