Regina Is Gone

Summary: Regina has lung cancer. Emma is there when she takes her final breath.

She doesn’t talk much anymore but she does like having her hand held. She had always liked that. She had liked it before she’d gotten sick and she likes it now. 

Emma thinks that Regina knows that she doesn’t have much time left. That she had known anyways. She doesn’t seem to know much these days; she dwells in a morphine fog, a limbo state where locations and dates blur. 

Emma can’t say that it had happened fast, they’ve known for some time now. Back in January. It was a cruel thing to have to spend new year’s eve in the ER, doubly so to receive the diagnosis just as midnight came around. Life truly is unkind to Regina and she can’t blame the woman for having become so bitter. 

And maybe Emma is becoming bitter for it, herself. 

She had just started smiling again. 

Back in December two years ago she had declared that this new year would be better for her, that she would live again. Truly live. 

She didn’t know that she was dying. 

That she had been dying for perhaps a year or two. 

Slowly. 

Since the day that they’d met, she’d been dying. Maybe a bit longer.

Probably a lot longer.

The doctors couldn’t say for certain.

Emma thinks that she had inadvertently bought herself more time in suspending Storybrook in time. 

She spent the first year after her curse broke, miserable and resentful. Perhaps she had wanted to die. Emma thinks that the woman might have wished death upon herself; an escape from her suffering. 

It was the one wish that had been granted. But only after she stopped yearning for death.

It was two years after the curse; Regina was energetic then. She had acquired plenty of new hobbies; gardening, baking, candle making, and sculpting wax. She had dabbled with making soap as well. Sometimes Emma would walk into her office and catch her shaping a wax horse instead of getting through her pile of paperwork. And she would take the chance to tell Regina to get back to work, a sly throwback to an older era; she can still hear her voice clear and smooth, “our tax dollars hard at work, I see.” 

She has a sense of humor now. She had quirked a brow and looked up from her wax horse and, with a haughty sniff and a slight laugh, had muttered, “perhaps you don’t want your gift then.” 

Regina hasn’t made any wax sculptures in a while. 

Not since chemo began and the brain fog and persistent pain started to set in. Forgetfulness and absentmindedness. Emma could see the frustration on Regina’s face when she misplaced a tax form that she had been working on. Or when she’d confused the date of a mayoral meeting for one of their date nights. 

She resigned from her position later that year. 

The town didn’t know why; they had tried to tell her that they appreciated her work, that they know that she had changed and didn’t want her to step down. She had told them simply that she wanted a chance to explore passions beyond leadership. That she had never really wanted to be a queen or a mayor at all. And Emma supposes that it hadn’t been a lie, rather one motivation out of many. 

Regina has always been private and Emma had respected that. Her own mother and father hadn’t known for months, not until she had broken down in front of them. Cried to Mary and David about how hard it is to listen to Regina cry at night. To listen to wheeze and cough. To see her wake up with bags under her eyes after another night of chest pain. 

All of that pain and exhaustion that had invited depression right back in. But Regina still smiled now and then. She still laughed a lot too. At least in the beginning. 

It had started out as pneumonia. A stubborn pneumonia that kept coming back. She had mentioned that she had dealt with that on and off before casting her curse, but hadn’t thought much of it. 

The doctors had assumed that she was simply vulnerable to pneumonia—tossing in the possibility of her being immunocompromised in some way. 

Her voice had grown hoarse too. Rather consistently, but they had attributed that to flu season and so she never went to the doctor. And her breathing—she swore that it was just a sinus infection or allergies. 

And then her arms and face would swell…

She was diagnosed a month later. 

It was too late by then. 

But she’d still chosen to fight because, “I finally have a life worth fighting for, Emma.” She cried that night. “What am I going to tell, Henry?” 

Emma couldn’t find the words either. 

For a while Regina stopped leaving the mansion. She also stopped looking in the mirror. She always had put a lot of care into her hair and skin. “You’re a beautiful woman.” Emma could say it over and over again but Regina would always disagree. She misses her hair and she said that the wigs looked fake. She no longer had the strength to use magic to grow it back. To use any magic at all. Eventually Emma had managed to coax her outside. She’d found a weak point; Regina’s love for the autumn months. And this year’s foliage had been particularly lovely. The woman had buried herself in hats and kept well away from the well traveled paths. 

One night, she had admitted that she had always felt at least somewhat displeased with her appearance which Emma had found hard to believe; Regina had always presented herself with such poise and confidence. Regina insisted that it was a facade, that she was a fraud. 

Emma knows that it isn’t true. 

That same night, Regina had joked that at least she is losing weight. 

Emma had forced a laugh but it hadn’t been so funny with Regina cuddling close enough for her to feel the woman’s ribs on her back. As of then, she had been having trouble eating. Food, no matter the texture, amount, or type was making her nauseous. And so ER visits had started becoming regular. IVs, supplementary drinks and shakes,  and pills had begun to take the place of real food. 

Her skin was always pale and her eyes started to grow as hollow as her body.

And Emma started to get angry—absolutely furious at the universe, fate, whatever, for attacking her wife so aggressively and mercilessly. 

Emma had to care for her then. On some days—most of them—just getting out of bed had become taxing for Regina. Their forest walks had become briefer and briefer until she confined herself to the backyard, and then just the porch, and then to short ventures from her bedroom to the living room. 

She said that she felt lazy and useless. That she hated being a burden. 

Emma would rub her back and tell her that it wasn’t true. 

It wasn’t Regina’s fault that she was sick and dammit she was doing the best that she could. 

People had a lot of questions. Mostly wondering why that hadn’t seen Regina about lately. Granny had thought it strange that she hasn’t gotten any requests for Regina’s usual. 

She knew that they knew that something was amiss. That Regina wasn’t well.

Once, on an out of place good day, Regina had found the energy to visit her apple tree and ask how Belle is enjoying her new position as mayor. Belle had been the first person aside from family to learn that Regina has lung cancer. 

The two of them had talked for a good while. 

Longer than Regina usually talked. Throughout she would hold a hand to her aching chest and request water for her scratchy throat. 

Belle recommended a book that she would never get to finish. 

When they got home, Regina opened the window to let the summer breeze in. She said that she liked the smell of summer. That Maine has amazing summers. That she wanted to go to the beach. 

Emma knew then that it was almost over. 

She can’t imagine that Regina would let herself be seen in such a sickly condition unless she knew that she wouldn’t have to deal with pitying, patronizing looks afterward.

She had asked to go to the fourth of July barbecue too. Because, apparently, Grumpy is rather good at grilling and she could go for a bomb pop cocktail. Emma told her that she could use a firecracker shot or two for herself.

It had been a calm before the storm.

Before a grand fall.

The next day Regina started coughing up blood. 

She was admitted to the hospital on the second of July.

And here she is now, laying in the hospital bed, a ghost of a woman who barely utters more than five sentences a day.

None of those sentences are coherent. 

She talked more yesterday. 

Mostly to ask for the eighth time—third that day—where she was. And each time she was surprised to hear that she was in the hospital. She asked Emma if they could go to Venezuela to see a Mayan temple. She also asked if they could go to Austria to see Stonehenge.

Emma couldn’t keep the tears out of her eyes. In some way she had come to realize that Regina was already gone.  

Even the day before that, the words she said made more sense. 

Like yesterday, she hasn’t spoken at all. Has hardly woken up. Emma doesn’t like when she wakes up anyways. Because she always does so in a panic. Emma has gotten to know that crease in her brow very well, it is a telltale sign and the only indication of some type of distress; either pain or anxiety. Either which way, she fixes droopy eyes with dilated pupils upon her. And there is fear and pain in those eyes. Fear and pain that replaces something else. A something–some kind of sparkle—that was, at one point, Regina. Emma is now inclined to believe that you can see a person’s soul in their eyes.

While taking away the pain, the drugs have too taken the soul out of Regina’s eyes. 

Yes, Emma believes that Regina, though she still breathes, is gone already. The parts of her that matter anyways. 

Henry squeezes both Emma’s hand and Regina’s. “Can she feel it?” Henry asks. “Can she hear us.”

Emma knows that Regina hadn’t wanted Henry to see her like this. And she can see it on Henry’s face that he has mixed feelings about being here. 

“I don’t think that she feels anything, and that’s probably a good thing. It would hurt a lot if she could.” 

Henry’s hand leaves Regina’s for a moment and he leans into Emma. Emma squeezes him tightly. He closes his eyes, his expression twists into that particular wince that he makes when he is trying not to cry. He always ends up in tears.

“I think that she can hear us though.” 

“I love you mom.” He says. 

Just yesterday Regina would have whispered it back. It was one of the few coherent sentences that she clung to. Along with very vague requests for assistance. Emma isn’t even sure if Regina actually knows what she is saying or if she is just parroting phrases that she hears.

Today her lips part but the words never make it. Her throat is so dry and her lips are chapped and cracking. 

And Emma is tired. 

Tired of watching the woman die. 

It might be horrible but she wishes that Regina would just do it already. Just get it over with. She can’t fathom what the woman might be waiting for—pretty much everyone in Storybrooke has already dropped in to say goodbye or to tell her that bygones are bygones.

Emma doesn’t know how much more of this she can take. Henry has already reached his limit but he insists that he wants to be there for his mom. 

And so Emma cups Regina’s cheek and leans in close. “It’s okay, Gina. You can go by Daniel now,” she says. Regina’s eyes open for the first time that day. “I bet that he misses you.” As much as Emma and Henry are about to miss her. Emma kisses her forehead. “I love you.” But Regina’s attention has lapsed again. 

Her stomach lurches and her heart tickles. There is a shameful part of her that is jealous, maybe even angry, that Regina had perked up at the mention of Daniel but not at Emma’s own final declaration of love. 

That anger dissipates when she doesn’t respond to Henry’s hug either. She knows that Regina must be so terribly tired. 

And so she says again, “go on Gina, it’s alright.” Although she doesn’t believe it at all she adds, “Henry and I will be alright, we’ll take care of each other.” 

“I love you, mom.” Henry says. 

“I love you, Regina.”

Regina’s eyes open, they go very very wide. Her mouth opens and for a second Emma thinks that she will return that, “I love you.” Instead she lets out another one of her gurgling breaths. This one is the worst. 

It is also the last. 

Regina is gone. 

She has been gone for days.

Self Promo Sunday: "And All the Trimmings"

These next couple of weeks, I'm going to highlight the Thanksgiving fics I have written over the years. I've always loved the holiday, and there aren't enough fics for it (in my humble opinion) so I've tried to create a few at various times along the way. This one is some Thanksgiving fluff written during 5B as I anxiously hoped for them to return from the Underworld with their hero party still intact and a pirate in tow. Nods to CS, Snowing, and OQ in here; Thanksgiving is a whole family holiday after all! ;p  Anyway, I think that’s it, other than it obviously being canon divergent now, since things did not pan out nearly so happily upon their return from Underbrooke.  Still, enjoy – and please let me know what you think if you’re so inclined!

“Charming?” his lovely wife’s voice rings brightly from the loft’s small kitchen right into the erstwhile Prince of the Enchanted Forest’s ears as he bustles through the door of their apartment, arms full of groceries and cheeks red from the first deep chill and frost of the year. “Is that you?”

“Yes, Snow, I’m back!” he calls, bemused smile quirking up one side of his mouth. A chuckle escapes David Nolan’s throat at how happy and excited his Princess sounds. Setting his purchases on the table until he can hang his coat back on its peg, he shakes his head with affectionate good humor and goes to meet her in the kitchen.

If he’s honest with himself, David is nearly as anxious and thrilled as Snow. After all, their entire family, with all its odd, extended members, will soon be gathered here with them for the first Thanksgiving holiday they have celebrated together. His heart swells at the very idea – even if at the same time he has to simply hope the whole thing will really manage to go off without a hitch…or any bloodshed.

“Looking for these?” he asks with happy teasing in his voice as he enters the kitchen, sets the several plastic bags from the market on the counter, and leans over the center island to plant a kiss on Snow’s upturned lips.

“Yep,” she chirps, beaming at him as they part and reaching in to begin unpacking, “I was.”

Charming moves back into the front dining area, preparing the table and making sure they have enough chairs, seeing that the candles and centerpieces Snows wants are out, and letting her get back to her cooking in the meantime. Between the homemade noodles, green beans, and the mashed potatoes and gravy his wife has simmering all at once, Charming is impressed she can keep everything going without setting anything on fire, much less have the whole apartment smelling good enough to make him drool, and he certainly doesn’t want to distract her from it. No matter how long they have been married, or what realm they find themselves in, it doesn’t take long for Snow to prove that she will never cease to surprise and amaze him.

He has just stepped back to survey his handiwork proudly when the doorbell rings. Swiftly moving forward to answer it before Snow comes running, Charming’s smile grows even wider as Henry bursts into the room, greeting him enthusiastically and launching right into a story of their hectic morning. He is followed by Roland, who is practically bouncing up and down, vibrating with rambunctious energy, his deep dimples cracking wide across his face. After their two boys come Robin and Regina, each laden with items that Charming attempts to help take off their hands.

Robin hands over the delectably scented and delicious-looking turkey, beaming proudly as he gives a nod toward the perfectly crisped and golden brown bird on the platter, which has clearly been charmed in some way by Regina to stay warm and ready to place on the table. “Caught it myself, Mate,” Robin says. “Should be a good one.”

Charming sets the turkey on the long dining table he has just finished with, then claps his friend on the shoulder and ushers him in. “I’m sure it will be. Thanks,” he answers.

Robin slings an insulated bag off his shoulder and holds it forward as well. “Regina’s apple tarts,” he explains with both a mischievous smile and a shrug of feigned innocence. The former thief knows the rest of the family’s understandable aversion to the fruit, but he also somewhat adores his beloved’s rather twisted sense of humor and refusal to shy away from her past by making a dish that highlights the difference in her now and just how far she has come. With a wink, he tacks on, “Taste tested them myself, and they’re irresistible.”

The archer moves past, on into the loft to greet Snow and to catch and corral his young son. Regina raises a sculpted brow at David as she enters after Robin, their new little girl sleeping cradled in her arms and a diaper bag slung over her shoulder. Though David knows all too well that having a newborn in the home can be harrying, the formerly evil Queen looks as completely polished and put together as always – not a hair out of place. “Charming,” she greets with a wry nod, somehow managing to inject even the simplest hello with her trademark dry sarcasm. They may be on the same side now, fumbling towards being a truly non-dysfunctional family, but he somehow feels that her half-mocking way of using the name Snow gave him will never change, and perhaps – in Regina’s own way – it is meant as an endearment.

Peeking into the layers of lavender blanket bundled around Robin and Regina’s little daughter to shield her from the biting wind outside, Charming can’t help a soft grin at the sweet, perfect infant sleeping peacefully, the softest wisps of russet curls on her little head and her soft, pale pink skin. “She’s lovely, Regina,” he murmurs in quiet awe, not wanting to rouse little Mariana, and feeling a flood of affection for this woman who once hunted he and Snow, wanting both of their heads, but who also saved Snow’s life as a child, and has clawed her way back from the bottom to right her wrongs.

Before he can close the door behind her, Emma and Killian come tramping up the hall stairs, cheeks flushed and both laughing at some unknown joke between them, but greeting him heartily as they see that he is standing there watching. Emma reaches David first, falling into her dad’s arms and returning his hug exuberantly before reaching back to pull Killian in as well when he hesitates, effectively sandwiching herself between the two of them in a three-way hug. The laugh that rings from his daughter’s throat, light and open and at last free of the guilt and pain she had been saddled with for too long, is all David needs to be as grateful this Thanksgiving as at any he can remember.

“Thanks Dad,” Emma mumbles almost bashfully when she does ease back and both she and her pirate boyfriend pull away. They follow him into the house, their food contributions in hand.

“Aye, thank you for having us, Mate,” Killian adds with a dip of his chin as they all step through the door and he shuts it behind himself. He offers his love’s father a genuine smile when their gazes meet, Emma having busied herself with hanging up their jackets and removing her boots. For a moment, David is frozen in place, forcibly reminded of how Killian had looked just a few weeks before, when they had found him in the black depths of the Underworld. As long as any of them live, David fears the sight of Killian Jones which had greeted them beyond the Veil would be hauntingly branded on their souls. Chained to a dank stone wall in the furthest recesses of Hades’ domain, the shade of a pirate that they’d found was not the dashing rapscallion they knew. Though bearing his torment in stoic silence, he had been emaciated and shivering, the dark rings under his eyes clearly showing that Killian had known no sleep nor peace since he left their world. The rest of the rescue party had stood horrified as Emma fell to her knees before him, tears pouring down her face while she reached out to cup his bearded cheeks in her hands. Worse than all that though had been the blank, almost unseeing despair in blue eyes that had always been so full of life; the vacancy in their depths no longer seemed like Killian at all and had truly made their blood run cold.

To see that spark back in Jones’ smiling gaze, and the dark bruises beneath his eyes fading, reminds David forcibly just how much they do have to celebrate before he clears his throat to respond with hoarse emotion. “Of course. We’re glad to have everyone. Snow’s really trying to outdo herself.”

Without further ado, David soon finds his family gathered around the table, talking, laughing and reveling in the warmth and happiness of the occasion. There is good natured ribbing at Emma’s continued inability to cook and a playful debate over whether or not the bottoms of several of the butter horn rolls she had made were more burnt than a nice golden brown. Mariana wakes from her nap and begins to gurgle and coo at everyone she can see gathered around her. Snow gushes over the pecan pie that Emma grudgingly admits Killian had made, complete with perfectly crimped edges of crust and an ornate little ‘KJ’ carved into the crunchy sugared top. “Figures,” Charming hears his daughter grumble with teasing chagrin, “He can cook circles around me with only one hand.”

Snow is quick to assure her daughter that she will get better with practice, but Killian only smirks at Emma, looking entirely as though he wants her to either smack or kiss the grin off his face. “Well, I had to sign such artwork, Swan,” he counters playfully. “You might have tried to take credit for it otherwise.”

The whole table laughs and carries on, but is quickly more absorbed in eating than talking, just comfortable in each other’s presence and enjoying a quiet moment. David looks to the other end of the long table and catches Snow’s eye, perfectly understanding the misty look he finds there. This was all either of them had ever wanted: a family, all together, happy and safe. It is what they had sacrificed so much for their best chance at preserving. He smiles at his True Love, marveling that two other pairs of True Loves sit in this very room with them, and tucks into his own meal at last. Now that they have all found each other, this family has every blessing it could possibly need.

Hey, 🧥 again!

I had a thought. To the best of my knowledge/memory, we never got to see Emma meeting adorable baby Regina (like, Daniel and early in the marriage Regina).

And Season 1 Nancy is also adorable and baby (not that she stops, but it's a different flavor now).

So time travel brings Baby Nancy to Hawkins, much to Present Nancy's horror and everyone else's delight and amazement.

and i think you're right, we don't ever see emma see a young regina physically. i know in season 5 during the whole dark one thing, emma sees the death of daniel through the dreamcatcher, but that's as far as that goes.

but!!! here's some ouat au lore. so in the enchanted forest, the byers and the wheelers know each other. the byers aren't royalty like the wheelers by any means, but karen and joyce were childhood friends, and they've remained close friends (karen helped joyce get rid of lonnie...) so joyce and will and jonathan (and steve...) would've seen like pre-evil queen nancy (she's not really that evil but she's not innocent either) and they would know what to expect. everyone else however....

though i could actually see this happening like, season 3 finale style? like when they go back in time into the enchanted forest and accidentally bring marian back, but here instead of marian they accidentally bring a pre-evil queen nancy back to hawkins and then have to deal with her. (they'd have to send her back, of course, because their nancy won't happen unless the other nancy goes back.)

SPOILERS!!! REFERENCES AND EASTER EGGS IN F&C ep. 1: FIONNA CAMPBELL

Here's a bunch of stuff I spotted. Feel free to add more.

During the anime girl hero dream Fionna mentions Hans Brinker, a character from a novel which introduced speed skating to the United States.

The BMO style alarm clock has BMO's voice.

The ducks that steal Marshall Lee's money look like one-headed versions of the two-headed duck from the original Adventure Time title sequence.

Cheers is a real sitcom. Simon previously sang its theme song in the episode Simon & Marcy, and now it seems to have manifested in the human AU due to his connection with it.

Fionna says "stop acting crazy" to Cake with the same meter as Marceline said "stop acting crazy" to Ice King in the episode I Remember You.

We all spotted this in the trailer but there's a Magic Man hat in this shot. Magic Man's hat was most recently seen being worn by Betty.

The Betty statue also suggests that Simon's psyche has significant influence over this world. The fountain includes frogs, a symbol of change that was previously also used in Temple of Mars. And Fionna mentions the statue underwent renovation twelve years ago, which is the same amount of time that's passed in the prime universe since Betty's amalgamation with GOLB.

It would seem Mrs. Abadeer runs a vacuum cleaner company as well as being Fionna's landlady. And Queenie runs an accounting business as well as the tour bus.

The stickers on Marshall Lee's guitar case are all references to real life punk rock bands. X-Ray Pex = X-Ray Spex, Daikini Kill = Bikini Kill, PM might be a reference to AM as in the Arctic Monkeys. I'm not sure what Las Crudas and Dark Eyes are references to. Perhaps someone more familiar with punk rock can let me know?

In case you were wondering, the credits confirm that this is human genderswapped Fern. It's a bit more obvious now that we can see all her green clothes and backpack, and given what she said about her dreams being super messed up. I'm not gonna go through the rest of the cameo characters in this episode because most of them are pretty obvious or already got figured out when the trailer dropped. That said, if anyone knows who the bus driver is meant to be please let me know.

The sword in the window of this games shop looks very similar to Fionna's sword from the original comic series.

The latte that Gumball - ahem I mean Gary - makes in this scene features PB's swan.

Okay one more cameo mention because I feel like it might become significant later. This is Ice Queen.

Fionna and Cake are dreaming about their apartment block in the credits of this episode, but it has a roof like the Tree Fort and the same little boat with a telescope and parasol.

When Regina speaks into the mirror one night, Emma answers.

Shadow Haven - Emma Swan is a PR agent who is sent on a holiday by her boss. Regina Mills is the owner of a private island named Shadow Haven. There is more to Regina than initially meets the eye. Swan Queen romance / BDSM story.

Feather of a swan - Emma Swan also ended up cursed in Hyperion Heights. With absolutely no memories of Storybrooke, she gets by working as a bounty hounter. After a particular long day, she just longs for a drink, and goes into Roni's Bar to get just that. But after she meets the bartender, nothing wil be the same again.

In it together - After both Hook and Robin are killed (and Hook doesn't come back in my story!), Emma and Regina grow closer. At first it's about getting each other through the grieving process, but eventually it turns into a much deeper connection.

Fairy Tale Writing Challenge

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away...

Welcome one and all! If you know me, you know there are few things I love more than a good fairy tale! So, to commemorate 1,500 followers and the rebranding of my blog away from solely being a Top Gun: Maverick blog, I've decided to host a little writing challenge!

Rules:

You MUST be 18+ in order to participate (Your age must be listed somewhere on your blog, I will be checking.)

This writing challenge is open to all fandoms!

This challenge will run continuously.

Send me an ask/message to let me know that you're participating!

You MUST choose both a fairy tale and a word for this challenge! Only one person per word prompt. I will add more if I need to.
