WDAS' Next Film After WISH...
Tumblr media
As of now, only one Walt Disney Animation Studios movie is on the larger Disney company's massive movie slate... A Chris Buck/Fawn Veerasunthorn-directed centennial celebratory picture called WISH, which was first revealed to the world at this past D23 Expo. It will, as usual, be a Thanksgiving week release.
No other WDAS film, titled or untitled, is dated for anywhere beyond that. Pixar, in addition to this summer's Peter Sohn romantic comedy ELEMENTAL, has two features dated for release in 2024: Adrian Molina's spacebound tale ELIO and Kelsey Mann's INSIDE OUT sequel. The former is a March release, the latter a June release. Given the usual pattern, the 2024 WDAS movie should be a Thanksgiving bow...
When Disney announces this release date, I do not know...
What the movie could possibly be? Well, let's see...
A while back, it was announced that the likes of Josie Trinidad (previously writer/director on ZOOTOPIA+), Marc Smith (story artist and animator whose work dates back to THE LION KING), and Suzi Yoonessi (a live-action director with no previous WDAS or animation credits) were set to direct their own pictures. At the time of that announcement, fall 2019, Carlos Lopez Estrada was also in the running to direct his own original feature. He eventually got pulled over to RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON - which he directed with Don Hall (previously co-director on MOANA, and director of BIG HERO 6 and WINNIE THE POOH), and was set to head up a "live-action"/CG-laden remake of their 1973 all-animals ROBIN HOOD film, with his own WDAS picture still on the way... Until he left last year...
Since that announcement, we've had two Don Hall pictures (RAYA and STRANGE WORLD), and a Byron Howard picture (ENCANTO), with a previously-unannounced Chris Buck/Fawn Veerasuntorn picture on the way. So does this mean one of those three directors are up next? Are they even still set to direct their own features? Given how things go into development and then get cancelled so easily, we may never know until Disney themselves announce what's coming... That is of course the usual in big-time animation, and scarily more so than ever before these days. Just look at what's happening with Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery's animation output.
So it could be one of those three directors' projects, or something never before heard of... At least by the public. We used have to very reputable blogs that got a hold of some serious juicy insider info (Blue Sky Disney, for starters), but it's not much of a thing anymore. Anyone remember those "leaks" that said an adaptation of BLUEBEARD would be announced?
Another possibility is a sequel to something. Walt Disney Animation Studios' history of avoiding sequels has many explanations. For decades, Walt himself resisted making animated feature sequels. Then in the post-Walt years, the upper brass seemingly sought to honor his aversion to such projects. Any serious idea of doing a sequel, such as a brief period of time where THE RESCUERS was to have Cruella de Vil as its villain, usually didn't last past development stages. When the outside world took over the tight-knit enterprise, namely big-time Hollywood executives like Michael Eisner and Frank Wells and Jeffrey Katzenberg, then sequels to animated movies weren't so forbidden anymore... But their stab at this, the 1990 release THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, was financially unsuccessful... This of course lead to nearly every sequel to a Disney animated feature being a direct-to-video affair produced at another animation house.
That was, until Eisner stepped down in 2005, Bob Iger took his place as CEO, and appointed Pixar's John Lasseter and Ed Catmull as heads of Disney Animation, Pixar, AND Disneytoon, the latter the division that made all of those direct-to-video films. Lasseter had them cease production on all sequels to the classic Disney animated films, and until their shutdown in 2018, the studio made CGI Tinker Bell spin-off movies and the PLANES spin-off of Pixar's CARS franchise. Walt Disney Animation Studios in the post-Eisner/post-DTV sequel age made WINNIE THE POOH, RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, and FROZEN II... There hasn't been a sequel from them since, nor the hint of one happening. BIG HERO 6 and ZOOTOPIA saw their "official" continuations in the form of Disney+ shows: BAYMAX! took place after BIG HERO 6, and ZOOTOPIA+ was a "midquel" where all the segments were happening within the plot of the movie itself. The TIANA and MOANA series they're deep in development of will be following up from their feature-length predecessors. I bet in a little while, we'll hear about an ENCANTO series next.
However, FROZEN and FROZEN II were both billion dollar smash hits, so FROZEN III is likely happening at some point. A ZOOTOPIA sequel is feasible as well, given that that film made a billion worldwide as well and is set in a world that's ripe with possibilities, BIG HERO 6 even. However, animated movies take a while to make and Walt Disney Animation Studios only gets out one feature a year in this day and age. And that doesn't count how in 2016, ZOOTOPIA and MOANA both debuted, ZOOTOPIA probably would've been a fall 2015 release had Pixar not taken up both the summer (INSIDE OUT) and fall slots (THE GOOD DINOSAUR) that year. Pixar, meanwhile, does two films every two years. Following 2015 and 2017 (CARS 3 and COCO), 2020 had ONWARD and SOUL, 2022 had TURNING RED and LIGHTYEAR, 2024 will have ELIO and INSIDE OUT 2.
But WDAS sticks to doing one a year, that is... when other things don't happen. WDAS had to miss 2020 because of COVID-19, RAYA was originally set to be that year's Thanksgiving release, it ended up opening in March 2021 instead. So... With theaters back in business, they're back to doing one a year. I feel that if they were successfully doing two pictures every year or every two years, you'd probably see more sequels.
So... The candidates... Those three directors, a sequel to one of their recent success, *or* hear me out...
What if they were to announce something that was supposed to come out ages ago, but for whatever reasons... Didn't?
Like, imagine if Walt Disney Animation Studios sometime later this year blew your minds and said... Our 63rd feature, releasing in Thanksgiving 2024, is GIGANTIC...
GIGANTIC is perhaps, of all the films that were in development at the studio in the 2010s, the one that lots of folks online want the most. A musical adaptation of the familiar Jack and the Beanstalk tale that was about a world of giants living up in the clouds. It had a lot of potential for sure, and it got the axe under Lasseter and Catmull's tenture, its director Nathan Greno (previously director of perennial favorite TANGLED) left the studio for Skydance. (Is he still directing that POWERLESS/POOKOO movie over there?) Which, ironically, Lasseter now heads up. Its other director, Meg LeFauve (who coincidentally worked on a TV show called GIGANTIC), is still working in animation-land, having written Nora Twomey's Cartoon Saloon film MY FATHER'S DRAGON, and INSIDE OUT 2 as well. Perhaps they can get her back, or in typical animation studio fashion... Restart and reinvent the whole thing from the ground up with a different director/team, if they can't get Greno and/or LeFauve back. I'm surprised there's no movement on reviving this one, given what it was promising, and how it had such a big presentation at the 2015 D23 Expo. Its cancellation in fall 2017 came as a real shock...
If not GIGANTIC, then I'd love to see them take a crack at other scrapped features that didn't last past the mid-2010s... Such as KING OF THE ELVES, based on the Phillip K. Dick fantasy tale, that at one point could've been the studio's Christmas 2012 release. Baffling how they couldn't make that story about a bunch of tiny elves who are at war - LORD OF THE RINGS-style - in a massive fantasy world but also live at a modern-day gas station work as a feature film. Or what about that COSMIC 3000 picture that reportedly involved teenaged aliens participating in thrilling space races? Hey, maybe they could take a crack at Terry Pratchett's DISCWORLD again, but this time not opt to adapt one book in the series.
Just a thought...
We shall see, maybe come later this year. We are in Disney's 100th year of existence, so I suppose we shall learn what comes out after WISH from Walt Disney Animation Studios...
UPDATE: JANUARY 20, 2023
Well looky here...
The Walt Disney's Company new and updated release schedule contains the following dates for UNTITLED DISNEY ANIMATION;
11/27/2024
11/26/2025
11/25/2026
One a year, as per usual. Pretty sure this is the landing strip for all the big updates and news set to drop at this year's D23... Monster Mouse, planting the flags.

Rules: List the first lines of your last 10 stories. See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag some people to take part.
Thank you @sammys-magical-au!
I’m including the current chapter I’m working on, otherwise half of my fics will be the ones I wrote back in ye olde days...
Some of these openers are NSFW, just fair warning. Links are provided, if so inclined, but most of the fics as a whole are NSFW. I just like smut and angst, what can I say?!
1. Comin’ Back to Me (WIP): “With the pendant I can hear people’s thoughts,” Tosh explained, “but it’s more than that. If I can concentrate hard enough, I can access their deepest, darkest desires. I can use this to help people, Owen. I can help people get to the root of their problems.”
Quite frankly, Owen thought she was barmy. He didn’t know what kind of bullshit Mary had been feeding her, but it was certainly something out of an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. All she needed was the pyrotechnics.
2. Mercy, Release Me (Gwen/Owen, implied Gwen/Jack, implied Jack/Ianto): It had started out innocently enough. Gwen had been in one of those “please come and rail me before I drag you down to the cells by your coat, Weevil audience be damned” moods that Owen had come to know very well over the last few weeks, but it was only today when that promise had become literal.
3. Couldn’t Drag Me Away (Gwen/Owen): Gwen found herself in a peculiar state of numbness, suspended between reality and her mind racing to find a justification of what she’d done. What they’d done.
4. Sin in My Heart (Gwen/Owen): Owen sat nonchalantly sipping a cup of takeaway coffee, barely acknowledging that anyone had entered his space at all. The passenger’s seat could’ve been occupied by Saddam Hussein and the twat wouldn’t have even looked up. All the while, Gwen sank into the seat, bowing her head in shame like a Catholic approaching confessional, though she was sure ten Hail Mary’s wouldn’t cut it for the sin brewing in her heart.
5. A Bad Desire (Gwen/Owen): Owen Harper had misjudged Gwen. From the moment she’d stepped through the revolving door of Torchwood, she’d seemed like nothing more than just another copy girl, another Suzie, another potential shag. But once he’d fulfilled that last part, she was nothing like he’d imagined.
6. Various Storms (Gwen/Owen): Gwen Cooper strode down the footpath with an impatient sense of purpose. She held a post-it note with street directions in one hand, and her phone in the other. Pressing the power button, the screen lit up and she saw what she came to this side of Cardiff for – a text message from Owen Harper. It was an ultimatum, a declaration that if she was to pay him a visit tonight, it would prove his accusations in the forest correct.
7. Damsel in Euphoria (Sarah Jane Smith/Harry Sullivan): “You’re mine now, old thing,” he purred, lightly ghosting his finger from the underside of her neck towards her accented chin, slightly tilting to see all of her; assessing her. He ran the tip of his fingernail further, and further; out of sight, out of mind, sans the light sensation of goosepimples licking their way down her body in waves.
8. How’s This for a Movie Moment? (Sarah Jane Smith/Josh Townsend): Yolande couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the state of the two at the breakfast table. Sarah’s curly auburn hair was rife with tangles and sticking out of her usual style – and was that a glow to her skin illuminating her face?
9. Miss Smith, You’re Trying to Seduce Me (Sarah Jane Smith/Mrs Wormwood): Intimidation wasn’t going to be Sarah’s best bet. The only thing running through her mind was anger. Pure, unadulterated hatred. She wanted to fuck with Earth? Well, she’d chosen the wrong path to cross. She’d have to think of something else…
10. Company Tonight (Sarah Jane Smith/Josh Townsend): “Very…very stupid, you…are…!” Josh exclaimed between his gasps for breath. Sarah laughed a shaky, incredulous laugh and they leaned their heads towards each other, to meet their lips in a short, sweet little kiss. They held each other close, clutching at clothing, in case they were to fly away. It was reassurance that they were here, right now. They were alive.
So, fun fact about fics 8 through 10. I actually wrote these nearly 10 years ago, when I was a wee child of 18.
But it’s interesting to see how a lot of my tactics have changed and how much they haven’t changed. Damsel in Euphoria was something I half started as a teen, but finished as an adult. The opening was something that survived from the original draft, but it looks like something that I could’ve written now. I think the only thing that’s ceased as an adult is my writing style has gotten a little less pretentious and wordy. Something I’ve always relied on is my auditory writing style. I hear the characters in my head, and that’s how they translate so well into my writing.
My favourite openings would have to be for:
- Mercy, Release Me because it’s hilarious. I just had a lot of fun writing that chapter in general. I don’t often delve into humour so I think it was a nice respite from the angst I put myself through in my work.
- Miss Smith, You’re Trying to Seduce Me because it’s short, sweet, and gets right to the point of what’s going on in the story and Sarah’s mind. That’s still one of my favourite fics as a whole. It’s one of my older ones and I still think it holds up. Well done little me, you filthy little shit.
I tag @violetmessages bc they’re the first person I can think of that wasn’t tagged by sammy, and whoever else sees this and wants to give it a go!

Tumblr media
Eyes: Her eyes are pretty much pitch black, with long eyelashes and prominent under eye bags.
Hair: Her hair is done in the typical finger wave style of the time, although it’s a lot less tight of curls due to her hair being blown by the wind when she rides her motorcycle. It’s a little past chin length and a deep red color.
Makeup: Lila’s lips are always a red, she’s never seen without lipstick, and she normally (in the day at least) wears a peach or cream eyeshadow, keeping it very light and close to her natural skin tone. For evening looks, she keeps the lipstick and wears a thick coat of eyeliner all over her eyelid.
Scars: Has a small one to the left of her eyebrow that she normally uses her hair to cover up a bit better, and a fair bit of scars on her hands, although they’re normally covered by gloves.
Tattoos: None
Piercings: A single earlobe piercing on each ear that she did herself after graduating from high school, but she does normally still wear clip on (or screw on) earrings.
Casual attire: Lila wears a black blouse that’s semi sheer and has frills around the neck and wrists, as well as down the center, her peach slip visible underneath it. That’s tucked into a pencil skirt that goes down to her midcalf and is a deep red color with small flowers, matching both her shoes and the accent on her jacket. Her jacket is a cream leather fringe jacket with three buttons down the front, and has red accents on the shoulders and the ends of the long sleeves.
She wears a pair of nude colored stockings underneath her skirt, and her shoes are red and floral printed 1 inch heels with a small bow on the toes. She wears white leather gloves with a crochet lace cuff that covers her wrist and a cream colored fedora with a red ribbon around it and a red feather tucked into the band. As for how she stores any belongings, she has a golden colored fish shaped purse that opens between the head and the body of the fish. (images of the outfit here!)
Formal attire: Lila’s normal formal dress is a bright navy blue, velvet, puff sleeve gown with a v neck neckline. The dress flares out past the mid thigh and hits the floor. Her neckline is held together with a golden colored brooch in the shape of a butterfly with red accents, and she wears golden chandelier earrings to match, along with a small bracelet. Her shoes have a thick heel and are black.
Sleepwear: Her floor length baby blue nightgown is made of silk and has a sweetheart neckline with thin lace straps holding it up. She wears slippers along with it.
Swimwear: Lila wears a navy blue wool skirted swimsuit with cutouts on each side and a set of thin straps holding it up. As for accessories, she normally wears a floppy sun hat and red, cream, and blue striped Espadrilles, carrying a book or two in a beach bag.
Accessories: Most of the time, Lila has a leather double tooled holster belt, one side for a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver and the other for a lighter made to look like a dueling pistol. She can and has confused them before but normally keeps them in a designated side. Pretty much all of the time excluding sleepwear, she’s wearing earrings that match her outfit in some way.
Personality: Lila is a very cheerful and upbeat person, pretty much always smiling or laughing, and can be very easily described as the life of a party. She’s always trying to look on the bright side of life, and likes to work hard in order to make the people around her happy. Lila is a hopeless romantic and pretty much always has her heads in the clouds thinking about it.
She’s relatively blunt most of the time, to the point where she’s not the most polite if someone has wronged her and she’s pushed past the point of conflict avoidance. Most conflict, she does try and avoid in order to make everyone around her happy, but if she’s pushed too far, she’ll let her short temper take over. Once someone knows her well, she’s relatively easy to manipulate if they know where her weaknesses are, and it’s something she hates about herself.
Lila hates being tethered to places and would happily live from place to place, traveling on her motorcycle to wherever the road carries her. She’s not great at planning far ahead in the future and would prefer to not really do so, as living day to day is what’s easiest for her. She’s relatively observant and high energy, and loves spending time with other extroverts.
Likes: Lila’s favorite flowers are bluebells and wood anemones. She loves exploring new areas, especially on her Triumph XO 1933 (and with Suzi Q!) and just getting lost. Lila is a yoyo professional and has been doing it since she was really young. She loves doing tricks with them and showing her friends. She also loves radio shows, even if she can’t understand a lot of the words, it’s good entertainment and helps her learn a bit more Italian in her free time.
Lila adores when its sunny out and she has the day off work so she can spend time with friends, whether it’s playing tennis on teams of two or having a nice picnic! Lila also loves going for walks in the evening with friends and looking at all the stars in the sky! In terms of food, Lila loves coffee and makes her own drip coffee every morning, and loves black olives. She also really enjoys tomato soup (with grilled cheese of course) and apple pie, although that’s more of a rare treat.
Lila enjoys reading too, although she did only pack a few books from home that she’s read cover to cover by now, and the genres she enjoys include poetry and nonfiction! She does write her own poetry and keep a journal, although both are a pretty private part of her life and she doesn’t share them with anyone. Lila has a small collection of old belt buckles and normally switches out her main one with a larger one when the occasion calls for it.
Dislikes: Despite it being a very popular food, Lila absolutely despises Jello and the texture of it. She hates when its foggy or rainy, as the worry of getting ran over gets a lot worse with those types of weather. She really dislikes when people avoid her or ignore her, as she thrives off attention and making other people smile. Lila cannot stand being restricted, whether physically or being disallowed to do what she wants to (whether it’s something she should actually be doing or not doesn’t matter). She cannot stand being stuck in the same environment day to day and does the best doing things different each day even if the changes are minor.
If things aren’t exciting for her and she doesn’t have enough stimulation, it really frustrates her. Lila tries to avoid thinking about her past or in general things that upset her, so if someone brings that up, it really upsets her and she’s prone to get angry. She can’t stand people that are overly polite or try to have a fake personality around others. On a lighter note, Lila dislikes comics, because she simply doesn’t think its a good cost value with the pages being mostly images instead of words.
Phobias: Machinery (esp loud and big machinery ie in factories) and being bound or tied up
Habits: Lila tends to bottle her negative emotions, namely because of how she’s worried about upsetting people around her. She also smokes about five packs of Craven A’s a day and tends to fidget with her screwback earrings.
Favorite color: Goldenrod or a golden-yellow
Favorite movie: Stagecoach
Backstory: Lila’s parents got married relatively young (her mom being 22 and her dad being 25) and had a child about a year later. Lila and her twin were born five years later in 1916, and the four of them had a relatively normal life. Lila didn’t necessarily get up to trouble but didn’t really work very hard at school until her youngest brother was born and her mom died in childbirth. It pretty much destroyed their entire family, her eldest brother and father worst of all. Lila didn’t necessarily remember her mom a lot, due to being only 3 when her mom died, but it was still very hard as her dad was home a lot less and her brothers were handling it about as bad as she was.
Due to her dad occupying his time with work, he ended up getting a bit sloppy at work and got in a horrific accident at the factory, causing the four of them to become orphans in the span of a year. With their dad dying about a year after their mom, the family was thrown into worse turmoil. Walter took the responsibility on himself at the age of 10 to begin working at any factory that would hire him as Lila and Leo poured work into getting through schooling, and helping raise Bernard as a family unit.
The minute Lila graduated from high school, she began saving up by working to move out, and moved out a year or two later. This somehow fractured the relationships a lot worse with her brothers for varied reasons, and they cut her off for a few years until Leo decided that surely Italy would be better than living here. It definitely was not, and a year into living there, Leo was practically out of money and manipulated Lila into moving with him to help with finances. She moved to Italy when she was 23, and got work as a factory worker in order to try and help him pay rent a bit easier but honestly really wishes she could move back to the United States.
Family: Lila’s family consists of her older brother Walter, her fraternal twin Leo and her baby brother Bernard. Walter was relatively standoffish and always too busy for her when they were kids, and with them being so far apart physically, they don’t really talk anymore. She really wishes that they did but has a really hard time spending time with him even before moving to Italy.
Leo is someone who they used to be really close with, but both time apart and together has made their relationship deteriorate quite a bit. As for Bernard, Lila feels a lot of responsibility towards him and was pretty much a stand in parent for him during his childhood, but also doesn’t feel that she can get really close to him as a person due to that. Her parents died when she was young enough that she doesn’t really remember them that well.
Friends: She’s relatively close with Joseph, as he can understand her a bit better than Suzi might, due to the language barrier. They have a relatively similar personality although they didn’t entirely get to know each other super well during the time he was in Italy before leaving to fight with the pillar men, but when he returned, they had a fair bit more time to bond. As for Suzi, she’s relatively close with her and keeps getting closer to her. There’s just something about Suzi that draws Lila in and the only thing keeping her from acting on the feelings is Joseph.
Relationship status: Crushing hard but still single
Pet(s): None
Occupation: Worked as a beautician before and after moving, works as a factory worker
Languages: English, is definitely not becoming fluent in Italian anytime soon but is trying to understand it better.

February 28, 2021: West Side Story (Part 2)
Got my popcorn. Sweet, sweet popcorn.
Tumblr media
Can I just say how much I genuinely miss movie theatre popcorn? And I don’t mean Orville Reddenbacher, or Pop Times, I mean real movie theater popcorn. One day soon...ONE DAY SOON...anyway, this movie is absolutely awesome, and I’m excites for Part 2, so let’s get into it. Part 1 is right here!
Recap (2/2)
We go to Maria and her friends Anita, Consuela, Rosalia, and Fransisca (Yvonne Wilder, Suzie Kaye, and Joanne Miya) at their seamstress jobs, as an entranced Maria begins to prepare herself for something that she won’t divulge. When her friends ask why she’s so happy, she responds with what else: a classic song (”I Feel Pretty”)!
Tumblr media
After said classic song, Anita reveals that there’s a brawl that night, and notes that they fight to “get rid of their feelings” That sounds like toxic masculinity, but I’m no expert. Anyway, Maria tries to get Anita to leave before Tony shows up. Then Tony shows up. Whoops. Well, Anita’s in on it now, and she promises Maria to keep their love affair secret.
Now that Maria knows about the duel, she asks Tony to stop the fight, as any fight between their two factions isn’t good for them. He agrees, and the two spend time together playing pretend with manakins representing their families, and their perceptions of the couple. It’s extremely cute, and it ends in a play wedding, culminating in another duet ("One Hand, One Heart”).
Tumblr media
Again, it’s very sweet. But there’s no time for that! The Jets are gonna have their day tonight! And the Sharks also have a surprise in store. The two gangs prepare for their fight, each plotting something dirty, just in case. Anita prepares for Bernardo to come home and engage in a night of passion. Meanwhile, Tony and Maria each sing for the end of the fight, and their future together. And, of course, Schrank and Krupke are trolling for any fights between the gangs. All of this is, of course, in an ensemble song for the entire cast (”Tonight Quintet”)
youtube
Time for a fight. And if you know the original play...this won’t end well. This will end VERY badly indeed. If we’re following the play, there’s at least one death coming, and maybe two, depending on how we do it. But let’s find out, as the two gangs face off underneath the highway.
Bernardo represents the Sharks, while Ice (Tucker Smith) represents the Jets. But Tony attempts to interfere and make peace with Bernardo and the Sharks. Tony refuses to fight the group, and once the fight escalates, Riff steps in and hits Bernardo. Looks like Tybalt and Mercutio are finally going to battle. And that’s when they draw their swords.
Tumblr media
Tony screams for the fight to stop, to no avail. And at a certain point, of course, the fight turns against Riff...and Bernardo kills him. And that’s when an enraged Tony retaliates and kills Nardo in turn. Two deaths. And the sirens wail in the disance as the gangs escape, leaving the bodies of the two leaders behind, alongside a beaten Tony, who realizes now what he’s done. Damn.
Tumblr media
On the rooftop, Maria waits for Tony to return, blissfully unaware of what’s just happened to her brother. However, Chino arrives and tells her what’s happened. She immediately asks what happened to Tony, and he angrily tells her that he killed Bernardo, and runs off. She doesn’t believe him, but it’s confirmed when Tony himself shows up and explains. She’s initially enraged, but understands that it wasn’t all Tony’s fault. They realize that the world around them won’t allow their union, but they don’t care, and express their love once again through song (”Somewhere”).
Tumblr media
Yeah, fuck Luhrmann’s version of this story, this is clearly far superior. I mean that. But Schrank and Krupke don’t think so as they continue to roam the streets, looking for the gangs. The Jets are staying out of sight, and two of them, A-Rab and Baby John (David Winters and Eliot Feld) share their feelings, with Baby John being absolutely terrified, having seen Riff and Bernardo’s faces as they died.
The fact of the matter is, nobody was supposed to die, which should’ve been a sign for them to stop the fighting. Unfortunately, Action (Tony Mordente) aren’t satisfied with that, wants to get revenge on the Jets. This riles up the Jets, except for Baby John, who doesn’t want to keep doing this. However, as they start arguing and raging, they’re cooled down by Ice, who tells them all to...stay cool (”Cool”).
Tumblr media
Looks like Ice is the new leader of the Jets, and the gang plays it cool as they exit towards the street. However, that’s when Anybodys (Susan Oakes), a Jets wannabe, shows up with news that Chino’s searching around the city looking for Tony...with a gun in hand. The hunt is one for Chino, as he’s hunting for Tony. And escalation continues.
But not in Maria’s room, as the two have slept together. However, Anita shows up, grieving the loss of Bernardo. She comes to speak with Maria, but catches Tony running away from the apartment. Given the fact that Tony is Bernardo’s killer, she’s not happy about this. However, of course, Anita doesn’t understand the entire situation, and her pain is clouding her emotion. Maria counters her with a song of her own, detailing her love for Tony (”A Boy Like That/I Have a Love”). This wins a tearful Anita over.
Tumblr media
Anita warns Maria about Chino, and as Maria heads to warn Tony in turn, who should show up but asshole Schrank! He’s there to ask Maria a few questions, and acts like a proper dick about it. Because he won’t let her go, Maria asks Anita to go warn Tony at Doc’s drugstore for her. Anita agrees, and leaves. Schrank asks who the boy was that danced with her at the dance hall, as the act upset Bernardo. She lies and says it was a boy named Jose.
At Doc’s, the Jets are protecting Tony, who’s hiding in the cellar under Doc’s protection, waiting for Maria. However, Doc isn’t there, and when Anita shows up with the message...it’s bad. They don’t let her through, even though she’s there trying to help. And their antagonism of her escalates to the point that...well, if Doc hadn’t shown up, it would’ve been very back. Fuck Action, by the way, and the rest of the Jets are pretty shitty people as well.
Tumblr media
But Doc does show up, and helps a traumatized Anita up. Rightfully angry, she tells them that she wouldn’t help any of them if they were lying in the street, bleeding. Vicious words, but her emotion is palpable, give what just happened. But she goes a bit too far when she lies and tells them that Chino killed Maria in rage, before leaving in tears.
Doc chides them bitterly, and kicks the Jets out permanently, once and for all. Good. Fuck those guys, I don’t care how awesome they can dance. I mostly don’t care. He goes to the basement to see Tony, who’s excitedly raving about his future with Maria. Doc slaps him out of it, and tells Tony what Anita said. Fuck. Well, to be fair, this was never going to end well. It is a tragedy, after all.
Tumblr media
And as the story goes, Romeo believes that Juliet is dead, so he goes out to look for Chino, wanting to go with her. He calls out for him all around, but ends up finding Maria instead. And they happily reunite...for 10 seconds.
Tumblr media
And this is all somehow worse than any other Romeo-death I’ve ever seen. It’s hard. And it’s terrible. And Tony dies in Juliet’s arms. And this is genuinely the most emotional I’ve ever been for any version of this story. Goddamn. GODDAMN.
Tumblr media
Both gangs arrive and watch on, and once Tony dies, they start going for each other once again, until Maria cries out to them all. She makes Chino give her the gun, and quickly holds it on him and ALL of them. And she gives...a terribly poignant speech. And Juliet lives...but her love dies.
Tumblr media
Schrank arrives, and even he bows to Maria’s love. everybody gives into it, me included. And Action, as much on a little monster that he is, is the first to step forward. He, Ice, and A-Rab step forward to pick up Tony’s body, and as they’re about to drop it, Indo and Pepe (Gus Trikonis and Jay Norman), two of the Sharks, also step in to help. And the Jets let them. One by one, the Jets and Sharks leave, and Maria eventually goes as well.
Tumblr media
And...that’s it. That’s...West Side Story. And right now, I really want to give this movie 100%. I mean it. But I’ll think on it first. Understand, however: I’m pretty sure that this is my favorite movie of the month. See you in the Review.

Using Names in Song Lyrics
Using someone’s name in lyrics you write can be powerful. And I probably don’t need to tell you that there approximate 8 million names of females who men have written about. There are female artists who write about names as well, but ironically, they are mostly woman as well. Joline by Dolly Parton, for example is about her begging another romantic rival to leave her relationship alone with her “man”. There are quite a few songs with male names in them, but by far more famous songs with female names.
This can be tricky. Because lyrics with names can get cheesy. The cheese factor is big. It needs to be written correctly and musically composed correctly. Here are some things to think about when writing lyrics with names in them.
When using a name in song lyrics sometimes it takes relatability out of the song for the listener. Except of course whose name is the same name in the lyrics. Think about it, I bet you can think of a song, a famous song, that sings your name. Because you think it could relate to you…even if it doesn’t at all. If it does it makes an even greater impact.
Using name in lyrics can be very loving and romantic. It shows the person you care enough about them and thinking enough about them to put their name in to a piece of artwork. That’s pretty cool.
Names in lyrics are fun and can have a great impact for the person you are writing it for. If the lyrics and song are good enough, they can have a very wide appeal – as you can see from this ridiculously long list of names from the website flashback.com:

“Open Spaces, Starry Nights” was the theme of the North Shore Land Alliance’s 14th annual Wine and Spirits Auction and Dinner Dance held at its new office location at Planting Fields Arboretum.
The “Starry Night” theme became apparent as evening set in. Exterior trees were up lit with twinkling lights, the cocktail tent was decorated in the colors of sunset with night following in the dinner tent complete with a full moon and shooting stars. The theme was symbolic of how saving open land reduces light pollution and allows us to continue to experience starlit nights here on Long Island’s North Shore.

The Wine Auction, chaired by Lynn and Brooke Dixon and Jess and Jon Green, with junior committee chairs, Kimberly and John O’Kane, featured a live and silent auction and Wall of Wine raffle with 50 bottles of premium wine ranked 90-plus by Robert Parker.
Among the many silent auction items were paintings by Christine D’Addario, Mercedes Dorson and Tjasa Owen, a cashmere wrap from Hermes, scarf from Leggiadro, cashmere ruana from Brooks Brothers along with gifts from J. McLaughln, Lily Pulitzer, and gift certificates for dinners and other cool experiences.
Following the dinner catered by Sterling Affair, was the live auction with Fred Bancroft as auctioneer. Among the many live auction prizes was a sturdy French-styled playhouse decorated by Tom Samet and Nathan Wold, the Bourbon Bucket List, a private hockey lesson with Mark Messier, a winemaker’s weekend tour of Sonoma County, a golf package at Kiawah Island Club, a shopping spree at Americana Manhasset with 24-hour Tesla experience, and a trip to the Six Senses Resort in the Douro Valley of Portugal and JW Marriot in Venice. Dancing to the tunes of the fabulous 45 Riots followed the auction.
The Land Alliance was formed in 2003 and has over the years protected nearly 1,200 acres of land from development. With a growing membership of close to 3,000 the Land Alliance also works with schools to educate communities about the important relationship among land, clean and abundant water and locally grown food.

SHARE THIS SHARE THIS Skimm for February 27th Skimm’d in robes QUOTE OF THE DAY “A text message sent while drunk” - How Oxford Dictionaries defines “drunk text.” Thanks for the clarity. Skimm This PLOT TWIST THE STORY Last night was the Oscars. “Moonlight” won best picture. “La La Land” did not. WHAT HAPPENED? Bonnie and Clyde had the wrong envelope, and announced “La La Land” as best picture. The film’s team came out for their speech. Then…never mind. “Moonlight” was the real winner. Host Jimmy Kimmel blamed Steve Harvey, then himself. PwC - the accounting firm that oversees the ballots - apologized for the not-so-classic mix-up and said they’re investigating what happened. WHAT ELSE HAPPENED? Kimmel - aka the Candy Man - spared no one in his opening monologue. Not even Meryl. Definitely not Mel. And he’s still not friends with Matt Damon. A bus load of tourists got punked. Things got political, too. Kimmel thanked President Trump for taking the spotlight away from that time “it seemed like the Oscars were racist.” Then he did some live tweeting. Meanwhile, the audience had all the feels during the In Memoriam part of the show. Jennifer Aniston - who introduced the segment - got choked up while talking about Bill Paxton, the actor who passed away at age 61 due to surgery complications the day before. WHO WON? “Moonlight” took home best picture and best adapted screenplay. “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle is now the youngest best director winner ever. Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, and Viola Davis picked up the other acting awards. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won for best foreign film, but boycotted the show to protest Trump’s travel ban. WHO WON THE RED CARPET? Viola Davis and Naomi Harris brought the heat. The artist formerly known as The Rock was feeling blue. Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, and Jessica Biel channeled Oscar gold. WHO DIDN’T? Casey Affleck officially, officially needs to shave. Dakota Johnson brought her Victorian apron. theSKIMM For a while it looked like the Oscars were going to be pretty predictable…and predictably looooong. Instead, it ended with one of the biggest plot twists in Hollywood history. Skimm This REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE PERSON CUTTING YOUR HAIR KEEPS FROWNING... Yeah, this isn’t going to work out. Yesterday, President Trump’s pick for secretary of the US Navy, Philip Bilden, pulled his name from the running. That’s because he didn’t think his business ties would pass an ethics review. He’s the third of Trump’s nominees to drop out, after labor nominee Andy Puzder and Army secretary nominee Vincent Viola both bowed out in recent weeks. Who’s also been shown the door? Some members of the media. Last week, the Trump administration blocked several media outlets (CNN, The New York Times, Politico) from an off-camera briefing with Press Secretary Sean Spicer. This is not normal. It’s unclear why these outlets were banned. But this comes as the White House has been pretty open about how unhappy it is with media coverage of Team Trump’s alleged ties to Russia. Then, over the weekend, President Trump said he’ll sit out this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner - the one where the press, the president, and a comedian roast each over lots of champagne. Trump’s the first president in decades to RSVP ‘no’ to the event. So…not getting warmer. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST GOT HER FIFTH SPEEDING TICKET... So you think you’re a NASCAR driver? Yesterday, Kurt Busch won the Daytona 500. It’s like the Super Bowl for race car fans, except it kicks-off the start of racing season. After years of viewership taking a deep dive, NASCAR tried to amp up the excitement by having drivers race the 500 miles in three stages - instead of one long turn ’round and ’round the track. The change-up was supposed to make things more dramatic. Yesterday’s race involved multiple crashes, including a 16-car wreck. And Busch eked out the win in the final lap. Drama? Check. Skimm This WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TEAM GOES ON AN OFFSITE... The Dems spent the weekend doing trust falls too. They elected former labor secretary Tom Perez to be the new DNC chairman. He was in a tough race against Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) - who was the guy supported by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). After Perez won, he tapped Ellison to be his right-hand man. TBD on whether they’ll have the deeply divided party singing kumbaya. Skimm This SKIMM MONEY ROL: Stands for return on life. “You are hereby charged with the murder of Agent Ianto Jones. How do you plead?”
Captain Jack Harkness stared, glassy-eyed, at the judge. “I didn’t kill him,” he said hoarsely. “I didn’t kill Ianto.”
“How do you plead?”
“Guilty,” Jack rasped. “But I didn’t kill him. I didn’t.”
“You cannot plead both guilt and innocence, Captain Harkness.”
“It’s my fault. I recruited him. I gave the 456 an ultimatum and they killed us.” Jack cleared his voice. “It’s my fault that Ianto is dead. But I didn’t kill him,” he repeated shakily.
“The defence requests-”
“Ianto is dead and it’s my fault. I was with him when he died. He died because of circumstances that I had ignored and then dealt with later with my team. But I did not kill him.” Tears began to fall down Jack’s face, though he spoke clearly. “I love him.”
“Recent events have shown that Torchwood Three is incapable of functioning as a unit, as Captain Harkness describes them, outside the government and beyond the police. It is the opinion of this court that Torchwood is a danger to society.”
“Torchwood has saved more lives than not,” Jack said feebly. “Ianto’s death,” he broke off, stifling a sob. “Ianto’s death was a sacrifice. The same sacrifice that men and women make in the military. He died so that we could live. He died, because he believed that the 456 could be stopped. That the children could be saved. But if it is the decision of the court that I am to be sentenced, I do not protest. I could tell you the name of every person whose death is on my conscience. Ianto. Toshiko Sato. Doctor Owen Harper. Suzie Costello. Melissa Moretti, Alice Carter. Steven Carter,” Jack’s voice broke with the reminder of the deaths of his daughter and grandson. “Gray.” A tear fell down Jack’s face as he remembered his brother’s death. “Clement McDonald.” He mouths the name ‘Captain Jack Harkness’, failing to sound the words.
“These were good people. They were all innocent. They all died because of Torchwood. And as the head of Torchwood Three, I accept responsibility for their deaths.”
“Captain Jack Harkness, by your own admission, you killed nine people. You are formally charged with the deaths of: Ianto Jones, Toshiko Sato, Owen Harper, Suzie Costello, Melissa Moretti (Alice Carter), Steven Carter, Gray, and Clement McDonald. How do you plead?”
“Guilty.”
“Captain Harkness, you are sentenced to life in prison under the Whole Life Order. You have demonstrated yourself to be responsible for the deaths of your team and to be sound of mind. You are sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. This court is adjourned.” Jack bowed his head as the verdict was read, avoiding all who were trying to make eye contact with him. Gwen was in the courtroom; she had been his character witness, as well as Rhys Williams, Martha Jones-Smith and Mickey Smith.
“He’ll be okay, love.” Rhys whispered to his wife as Jack was led, handcuffed, from the room.
“I know,” Gwen looked at Rhys, her eyes shining. “He’ll be there for eighty years or so until he dies. I only hope that someone is there to stop him from being buried or cremated. Even if he can be held responsible for the deaths of our friends and his family, Jack doesn’t deserve an eternity of…that,” her voice broke. Rhys pulled Gwen close and they sat in the court room as it emptied, both lost in their own thoughts.
