Happy New Year!
In Japan, the new year is a Big Deal (much bigger than Christmas!), and one of the big things to do for the new year is to visit Shrines and Temples. There are festivals, and midnight bell ringing, and rituals, and it's really quite amazing. You can get all sorts of lucky amulets for the new year, and get little fortunes- while a lot of this is also year round, it's especially auspicious at the turn of the year to set the tone for the next! This upcoming year of 2025 is the Year of the Snake, so you will find a snake theme running through many of the places you can visit.
In SL, the Goshuin Project is doing an event for the New Year, organizing a list of Shrines and Temples that are distributing Goshuin, the auspicious red seals, that commemorate your visit.
Things to know: I'm obsessed with Goshuin, in RL and SL. It feeds into more than one of my impulses. I almost missed my plane home getting one and no I'm not joking. There are 46 official locations in the event! You do not have to get them all! There's no reward for completing everything, other than getting to see them all and having so many goshuin. I have to get them all. But you don't. Some of these locations will only be open for a very short window! Some will close the 5th (Japan time, so practically the 4th SLT), which is a traditional time for some new year celebrations to wind down. Others will close the 15th (14th), another time for new year celebrations to wind down. Others will be around for at least the entire month, and still more are permanent locations. Some even have new goshuin every month of the year! There are more places in SL that have goshuin, that are not on the list! I will add those that I find.
01 Warbunton Shrine 倭文沌神社:
Warbunton Shrine is maintained by the organizer of the Goshuin Project, sakka Flow. You have no idea how much I love that she decided to do this (it's a lot). Warbunton Shrine is open all year, and has special Goshuin for the new year and summer, as well as seasonal goshuin every single month. The Shrine environs also change for the seasons, with new plants and decorations as appropriate. The Shrine grounds have expanded a bit recently so there is a little more to visit.
Warbunton is a Hamster Shrine, that enshrines a hamster god, on the eastern end of the GAETA V continent of mainland, and can be reached by Saitama Metro on the Maya Line, M01 Gaeta East Beach station. I also love the Saitama Metro- public transportation, good public transportation, is amazing and super convenient. And there are lots of interesting places you can find along the three lines of the Saitama Metro!

After warming up, we're back out at Ramen Alley for some famous Sapporo miso ramen! Every shop has their own spin, be prepared to wait more than an hour for the popular ones!

Short line for this place - roasted miso ramen, only 6 seats!
Chuuya, that beam overhead...

Susukino ice festival! This is the Ainu culture, the original indigenous folk of northern Japan and Hokkaido!

Chuuuya, do you think freezing in ice would be...?
I'm going to fucking leave you behind if you don't shut up.

Hokkaido's icon, the 'snow fairy,' shima-enaga.

And what place is this, Chuuuya?
An ice cream speakeasy 😏

And how does it work?
Ya see those vials behind me? Each one holds a different (strong) alcohol. Including some exceptionally rare and popular ones...
You finish the top of your milk ice cream, place your spoon like so, and top it with a miniature ladle of liquor. It brings to mind the experience of imbibing in absinthe, poured over a sugar cube - which is also one of our selection.

It's a secret ice cream place, only for adults...

Sapporo as a Winter Wonderland: A Tour of the Capital of Hokkaido

Traveling to Sapporo, Japan, feels similar to entering a wintry fantasy world. Situated on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, this energetic city is well-known for its delicious food, inviting winter scenery, and friendly people. Come along with me as I share the story of my incredible journey through Sapporo's charming streets and snow-covered scenery.
Day 1: Odori Park and Arrival
The stunning scenery of Hokkaido was covered in a layer of snow when my jet descended at New Chitose Airport. As soon as I got off the airport, the cold air welcomed me, but my excitement at seeing Sapporo warmed me instantly.
I explored Odori Park, a key green area that is transformed into a winter wonderland during the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, after getting settled into my comfortable lodging. Even though I didn't come during the event, I was nevertheless enthralled with the park's snow sculptures and illuminations. I enjoyed the sculptures and the city lights that decorated the skyline as I wandered down the trails covered in snow.
Day 2: Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine
A visit to Hokkaido Shrine, a calm and revered location tucked away in the middle of the city, started the second day. Encircled by trees blanketed in snow, the shrine provided a tranquil haven and an insight into Sapporo's spiritual side.
I traveled to Maruyama Park in the afternoon, which is well-known for its breathtaking cherry blossoms in the spring and its serene winter atmosphere. The large open areas of the park were ideal for a peaceful stroll, and I came upon the well-known Maruyama Zoo, where the polar bears played in their snow-covered enclosures, demonstrating the coexistence of urban and natural environments.
Day 3: Susukino District and the Sapporo Beer Museum
Enjoying the city of Sapporo's famed beer culture is a must-do when visiting. I learned about the past of one of Japan's oldest beer breweries by spending the morning visiting the Sapporo Beer Museum. I had the opportunity to taste a selection of recently created Sapporo beers during the tasting portion of the trip.
I went into the busy Susukino neighborhood in the evening, which is well-known for its exciting nightlife and mouthwatering street cuisine. As I had warm sake, ate jingisukan (grilled lamb), and conversed with the welcoming residents, neon lights decorated the streets.
Day 4: Day Trip to Otaru
I spent a day excursion to Otaru, a quaint seaside town conveniently located only a short train journey from Sapporo, since I was eager to see more of Hokkaido. I was taken back in time by the town's ancient canal, which was dotted with dilapidated warehouses. Otaru is renowned for its glassworks, so I had to bring home a piece of handcrafted glass art as a keepsake from my trip.
In summary:
As my time in Sapporo drew to a conclusion, I thought back on the wonderful experiences and sentimental memories the city had given me. I had a great respect for the beauty of Hokkaido's capital after visiting Sapporo, which, from snow-covered mountains and old temples to lively districts and gastronomic pleasures, proved to be a place that perfectly merged history and contemporary.

Unveiling Sapporo: A Detailed Guide to Japan's Northernmost Urban Charm

Imagine a city where every step you take resonates with the soft crunch of virgin snow, where the comfort of a hot bowl of miso ramen infuses warmth into your soul, and where the spectacle of brilliantly illuminated ice sculptures leaves you mesmerized. Welcome to Sapporo, the vibrant capital of Hokkaido and Japan's northernmost metropolis. Sapporo, with its distinctive fusion of culture, cuisine, outdoor activities and city life, etches an indelible mark on the heart of every vagabond. This comprehensive guide will take you on a journey through the city's myriad offerings.
Best Time to Visit Sapporo
Winter enthusiasts should aim for February when the city comes alive with the renowned Sapporo Snow Festival, a spectacular display of intricately carved, grand ice sculptures. However, if a colder climate isn't your preference, plan your visit around the mid of October when autumn paints the city in resplendent hues of oranges and yellows, creating a visually pleasing atmosphere to explore Sapporo's delights.
Arriving in Sapporo
The most straightforward way for international travellers to reach Sapporo is through the New Chitose Airport. From there, a swift and comfortable ride on the JR Rapid Airport Line will drop you off at the heart of the city, i.e., Sapporo station.
Where to Stay
Sapporo presents a variety of accommodations ranging from high-end luxury hotels to budget-friendly inns. For a lavish experience, consider the JR Tower Hotel Nikko boasting panoramic views of the city. However, for a more economical stay without compromising on comfort, Hotel Mystays Premier is a great option.
Exploring the City: Sightseeing and Cultural Walks
Regardless of the season, a visit to Mount Moiwa via a ropeway ride is a must-do. The panoramic views from the summit are spectacular. In the heart of the city, Odori Park offers a peaceful escape from the urban hustle. Dive into history at the iconic Clock Tower or the former Hokkaido Government Office Building, both standing as a testament to Sapporo's rich past. For a cultural deep-dive, check out the Historical Village of Hokkaido, showcasing the region's architectural heritage and the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, housing impressive collections of contemporary local and international art.
Sapporo's Gastronomic Offerings
A gastronomical tour of Sapporo would be incomplete without sampling miso ramen, soup curry and Genghis Khan (Jingisukan), a grilled mutton delicacy. Head to Ramen Alley, a narrow lane lined with shops serving Sapporo's signature soup noodles. For fresh seafood, pay a visit to the bustling Sapporo Central Wholesale Market.
Action-packed Adventures and Retail Therapy
Get your adrenaline pumping with activities like skiing, snowboarding, hot-air ballooning, and ice-fishing, widely available across the city. If shopping is more your style, explore the endless shops at Tanuki Koji Shopping Street. As the day winds down, experience Sapporo's nightlife in the Susukino district, Japan's largest entertainment district north of Tokyo.
Essential Travel Tips
- Consider purchasing the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau's one-day pass for unlimited subway and tram rides. This pass is a cost-effective way to explore the city at your own pace. - Credit cards are widely accepted in Sapporo, offering you the hassle-free convenience of cashless transactions. - Make use of free Wi-Fi spots scattered throughout the city for seamless internet access. Sapporo is a treasure trove of experiences, catering to every traveler's pursuits. Whether you are a culinary adventurer, a history enthusiast, an adrenaline junkie, or a city explorer, Sapporo ensures an unforgettable journey.
Leaving Sapporo: A Lasting Impression
As I bid farewell to Sapporo, the city left me with a mélange of unforgettable memories. There is no 23 in the Goshuin Summer event, so instead we skip on over to Kyoto to Yasaka Shrine. This entire region is based upon the actual Kyoto, Japan, and this Shrine is based upon the first life Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto. As they should be, other shrines, large and small, are also scattered across the city- and two of them are also offering goshuin for the summer. While they are not on the official list, there are posters at the desk that provide notice.
If you exit back out the large gate to Yasaka Shrine and turn left, pass the store next to the Shrine and turn left again to head behind the restaurant, you will find a little Inari Shrine.
And on the other side of the sim, across the large central river, you can find Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, also inspired by the real life Shrine of the same name in Kyoto. The central river is hosting a festival for Tanabata, the summer festival to the stars Vega and Altair, the literal star-crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are separated by the celestial river of the Milky Way, destined to only meet once a year. A boat floats on the river, and bamboo with wishes and decorations lines the river, as well as the festival booths and lanterns. (Depending on the route you walk, you may find a second celebration of Tanabata as well on your way.) The geisha who make this region their home also hold entertainment events, schedules are posted multiple places around the sim.

Sapporo Snow Festival

It is a winter festival held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. It started in 1950 and is held for about a week from the beginning of February every year. It is a festival that takes advantage of the snowy nature of Hokkaido, and is considered one of the world’s three major winter festivals along with the ‘Ice Lantern Festival’ in Harbin, China and the ‘Quebec Winter Carnival’ in Canada.
Hokkaido, where the Sapporo Snow Festival is held, is the northernmost island in Japan. Except for the coast, the average winter temperature is about 5 degrees below zero. Although the temperature is not on the low side compared to the latitude, in winter, the sea breeze blows from the Sea of Okhotsk, which causes a huge amount of snow. It is said to be the “snow kingdom” as it is the most snowy place in Japan. In winter, the whole of Hokkaido is covered with snow and most of the roads are frozen. Snow sometimes falls as long as May.

The Sapporo Snow Festival was started by the city of Sapporo and the Sapporo Tourism Association. Sapporo is the center of administration, industry, and tourism in Hokkaido, and is also the seat of the prefectural capital of Hokkaido. The Sapporo Snow Festival is a symbol of Hokkaido, attracting about 2 million tourists from all over Japan and abroad every year. About 250 large and small statues made of snow and ice are displayed in Sapporo during the festival. The snow sculptures on display range from 15m in height to miniature sculptures about 2m in height. It has various shapes such as world famous buildings and popular characters, and snow sculptures sculpted by citizens themselves are also on display.
The main venues for the festival are Odori Event Hall, Susukino Event Hall, and Tsudome Event Hall. The Odori venue refers to Odori Park, which runs east to west in Sapporo city. As the first venue at the center of the Sapporo Snow Festival, huge snow sculptures made with various themes are on display. The Susukino venue was newly established in 1983, and you can see sculptures made of ice. Tsudome is a place where you can enjoy various winter activities such as playing in the snow, skating, and sledding. In addition, large and small events such as small art exhibitions are held separately in Sapporo city.

Every year, the city of Sapporo hosts a large snow festival across the main streets in its city. You can see monumental snow sculptures and ice sculptures across two key areas in the city: Odori Park and Susukino respectively. I was lucky enough to visit both on a recent trip to Hokkaido and here is what I saw specifically in Odori Park.
Odori Park
Odori Park stretches from the Sapporo TV Tower to the Sapporo Culture and Education center, about 14 blocks long in total. I’ll start at the TV Tower and move down the street towards the end.
Stop 1: Hokkaido Ice Sculptures

They had a nice stage and ice sculpture celebrating Hokkaido, as well as some horse statues chiseled in ice. The cool part, which made me a little jealous, was the ice maze / enclosure where they had the smoking area. All the non-smokers were taking pictures through the transparent ice walls, much to the amusement of all the people smoking, I’m sure!
Stop 2: The Main Showcase Piece (Final Fantasy XIV)
Imagine my surprise when I read online that the main snow monument for this year’s festival was a depiction from Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve been playing Final Fantasy for years, but I never got into XIV, seeing as you need to buy a subscription to play. The scope and details involved was insane. I read on one of the many informational posters that the Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) helped to construct the massive display. They had a little Final Fantasy shop and I even saw a cosplayer snapping pictures in front of the statue (they were too fast for me to get their picture; they looking incredibly cold in their outfit).
Stop 3: Smaller Snow and Ice Grand Displays
One was from the Pacific Music Festival, which was a large stage displaying the profile of Leonard Bernstein. The next block had a large snow replica the Stockholm Cathedral and a huge ice replica of the Taichung Railway Station in Taiwan, where we witnessed a pop metal girl group perform (hard to explain; you’d understand if you saw). If you know Baby Metal, it’s kind of like that. After that performance, we tarried forth to see a large replica of (something) made of snow. The size and detail in each of these was very impressive!
Stop 4: Amateur Sculpture Garden
Local groups and artists had their own areas to work as well. There were a couple blocks dedicated to the non-professional craftsman, with elaborate and simple sculptures on display for all to see. My favorite was the Olympics diorama, complete with some Antarctic animals doing some curling.
Stop 5: Snow Slide and Astro Boy
These next two areas seemed grouped together by the theme of childhood, and I’m pretty sure a children’s organization or children’s entertainment organization sponsored the areas. Regardless, children could slide down some Cup Noodles and for the 90th anniversary of Osamu Tezuka, there was a huge Mt. Rushmore-style display of some of his most beloved characters. Can you name them all?
Stop 6: International Snow Sculpture Competition
The grand champion from team Thailand!
A coworker of mine told me to walk all the way to the end of Odori Park to see this, as it was one of the best parts for him each year (he used to live in Hokkaido). I am so glad I heeded his advice, as this was easily the most impressive and awe-inspiring part of the festival for me. The artistry, detail, and engineering in each sculpture was mind-boggling. There were conceptual pieces, post-modern pieces, and snow arranged in ways that made me wonder how it wasn’t falling apart. If you’re forced to only see on part of the snow festival, I would say without any doubt that it should be the creations from the International Snow Sculpture Competition!
There is also tons of tasty food in the food court area, small vendors for shopping, and plenty of live shows for you to check out as well. You could easily spend multiple days checking out everything it has to offer. With my warm layering and trusty camera phone, I had a great time snapping pictures and recording movies in the one day of sun and many more days of snow during my time in Sapporo.
Sapporo Snow Festival 2018: Odori Park Every year, the city of Sapporo hosts a large snow festival across the main streets in its city.
