The Phoenix Burns
Chapter 1: Embers of Childhood.
The village of the Kaemonor nestled quietly along the foot of Mount Ignis, a once renowned now dormant volcano said to have been the birthplace of the first dragon. Whilst that was centuries ago and the last whole dragon was rumoured to be deceased, the rugged warmth of the land provided life for both dragon hybrids and the dragonblood (kaemonor) tribe to thrive.
As the villagers of the tribe commenced their morning activities two children raced through the cobblestone path, ignoring the shrieks of woman and the disproved glances from onlookers, their laughter echoing off the stone cottages. The taller of the two, Bakugou Katsuki, would chase after the girl, grinning wildly as he attempted to take back his ruby stone necklace that was now held high above y/n's head, the chain glinting in the sunlight as she called out mockingly,
"Too slow Dragon Boy!". Bakugou's crimson eyes gleamed with determination as he ran faster not noticing the group of older village boys waiting for the two at the end of the path. It was y/n to first bump into on of them, a small groan escaping her mouth as she looked back up at the towering boys. Bakugou would stand beside his brows twisted in annoyance at the interruption as he snarled at the 5 older boys.
"well look who we have here, the prince of the dragonblood tribe with an orphan"
"look at her she's doesn't look anything like us"
"why is she so dark"
y/n would snarl her head now tilting to the challenge the other five.
"say that again I dare you"
Bakugou would watch in amusement proud of his friend's courage whilst also getting ready to beat the others up. Whilst his quirk hadn't come yet he was skilled in battle for his age, thanks to Mirko's training.
"who do you think you're talking to girl?!"
a brown haired boy would yell stomping towards her to slap her only to get pushed himself. The two would nod in mutual understanding at what was to come before they took to fight, y/n pulling one boy's hair whilst biting another whilst bakugou punched another in the face. Despite their chaotic energy however the two were no match for five older boys. Whilst bakugou was restrained he'd watch a kid slap y/n harshly on the cheek, the heat of the slap tainting her brown skin a light pink shade. His anger continued to boil as he watched them take turns in tugging her hair or kicking her, ignoring his own beating he was experience before he couldn't take it anymore. The large explosive blast was sent of towards the older guys, the heat of the blast shocking everyone enough to have all 5 boys running off screaming in fear. Y/n and Bakugou only stared at each other. "your quirk..." the girl would whisper both amazed and surprised whilst Bakugou stared at his hands. The day had come that his quirk would appear.
Whilst it was to be celebrated the young prince did not avoid the lecture his mum, the queen, was to give in front of both his friends and y/n. His mum would then move to y/n hugging the girl as she reassured her that she was still loved and cherished by all regardless of what the boys had said. Bakugou was young but not naive. He had gathered y/n was not from his tribe nor was she of dragonblood. What he wouldn't understand until much later that she belonged to the Malabar tribe in southern india, her mother being childhood friends with his own had left her daughter to be found on a boat and brought safely to Queen Mistuki. The suryan tribe, now deceased, had been acclaimed for their shared ability to absorb energy from the sun, some could reconstruct energy, others could blast it, some could even read energy waves and patterns. And yet their shared power is what drove their tribe to be hunted down and murdered by All for One. Rumours had it that someone born into the clan had the abilities to destroy the demon king however this was never confirmed and what was left of the tribe was ashes and blood.
"apologise now all of you!"
the queen would demand. Whilst the young boys would cower and plea for forgiveness bakugou would huff in annoyance before rolling his eyes and apologising himself. y/n on the contrary would apologise immediately however as the boys walked off she'd make sure to stick her tongue out mocking the lot.
"y/n i saw that"
"SORRY QUEEN MOTHER!"
authors note: ive had this tragic story in my head for quite some time and honestly i dont think im the best at writing (safe to say chapter 1 was not as good as i thought it would come out) if any writers are interested in this story and would like to write it out for me i would really appreciate it slide me a dm or a comment and ill get to you. hope it wasn't an eyesore for u guys oops but yh have a good day!! oh yh and reader is originally indian lol.

The UN designated school in India
National Youth Day and Pongal Celebration
09 January 24
SBOAMHSS, Coimbatore celebrates National Youth Day and Pongal with fervour
SBOAMHSS, Coimbatore, one of the UN designated schools in India, celebrated National Youth Day and Pongal festival with great enthusiasm and joy on 9 January 2024. The students and staff participated in various cultural and educational activities to mark the occasion.
The celebration began with a speech by the principal, who highlighted the significance of National Youth Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the great spiritual leader and philosopher. He urged the students to follow the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, who inspired the youth of India to strive for excellence and service.
The speech was followed by a dance performance by the students, who showcased the diversity and richness of Indian culture. The dance was based on the theme of âUnity in Diversityâ, which reflects the vision of the UN for a peaceful and harmonious world.
The highlight of the celebration was the Pongal feast, which was prepared by the students and staff with the help of the local community. Pongal is a traditional harvest festival of Tamil Nadu, which marks the end of winter solstice and the beginning of the sunâs northward journey. The festival is named after the ceremonial dish of rice boiled in milk with jaggery, which is offered to the sun god, Suryan.
The students and staff also celebrated Mattu Pongal, which is dedicated to the cattle, who are considered as the source of wealth and prosperity. The cattle were bathed, decorated with flowers and colours, and taken in a procession around the school. The students also made beautiful kolam artworks with rice powder, which are believed to bring good luck and happiness.
The celebration was a memorable and joyful experience for the students and staff, who expressed their gratitude to the UN for recognising their school as a model of sustainable development and education. They also exchanged gifts and greetings with each other, and renewed their social bonds of solidarity.
(Pongal is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Tamil people in Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India. It is also a major Tamil festival in Sri Lanka. It is observed by the Tamil diaspora worldwide, including those in Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, Singapore, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Gulf countries)

2024 Tamil Nadu's Cherished Harvest Pongal Festival - Just a Month ahead
2024 is just a month away. Entire world is preparing for Xmas & New year. But in the heart of South India, as the winter solstice passes and the sun begins its northward journey, the people of Tamil Nadu prepare for Pongal, their most cherished harvest festival. Celebrated with great fervor and joy, Pongal marks not just the end of the harvest season but also a time of giving thanks to nature and renewing bonds of kinship. For those unfamiliar with Tamil traditions, Pongal offers a fascinating insight into a vibrant cultural festival that has been celebrated for centuries.
This extensive guide aims to introduce you to the colorful world of Pongal â exploring its rich traditions, mouth-watering cuisines, and lively festivities that bring communities together. Whether you are a cultural enthusiast, a lover of festivals, or simply curious about new traditions, join us on this captivating journey through the heart of Tamil culture.
Understanding Pongal
Origins of Pongal
Pongal, deeply rooted in the agrarian traditions of Tamil Nadu, is not just a festival but a reflection of the state's symbiotic relationship with nature and agriculture. Dating back thousands of years, its origins are intertwined with Tamil folklore and ancient practices that revered the sun, rain, and livestock, the essential elements for a successful harvest. The festival is a time-honored testament to the gratitude of the people towards these natural elements that sustain their lives.
Pongal in the Tamil Calendar
Significantly, Pongal marks the end of the traditional Tamil month of Margazhi and the beginning of Thai, which is considered an auspicious month for new beginnings. The Tamil saying, "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum," meaning "the birth of the month of Thai paves the way for new opportunities," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of optimism that Pongal brings.
The Meaning of 'Pongal'
The term 'Pongal' in Tamil means "to boil over" or "spillover." Symbolically, this refers to the traditional dish prepared during the festival, where the boiling over of milk and rice is a sign of abundance and prosperity. It represents the wish for overflowing fortunes and the bountiful blessings of nature.
The Four-Day Celebration
Bhogi Pongal
The first day, Bhogi Pongal, is dedicated to Lord Indra, the god of rain, and is marked by the ritual of cleaning and discarding old belongings. This practice symbolizes the elimination of negative energies and the welcoming of positive vibes into homes and lives. Bonfires made of old clothes and materials serve as a ritual cleansing, paving the way for renewal.
Suryan Pongal
The second day, Surya Pongal, is the most significant. Devotees offer thanks to Surya, the Sun God, crucial for agriculture. Families gather to cook the Pongal dish outdoors in earthen pots, allowing it to boil over, which is considered a good omen. The freshly harvested rice, combined with milk and jaggery, makes for a sweet concoction that is first offered to the sun and then shared among family and friends.
Mattu Pongal
The third day, Mattu Pongal, is dedicated to cattle, acknowledging their role in farming. Cows and bulls are bathed, adorned with bells, garlands, and painted horns. In villages, they are paraded through the streets, often accompanied by music and dancing. This day epitomizes the respect and gratitude farmers have for their cattle.
Kaanum Pongal
The final day, Kaanum Pongal, is a day for family reunions and socializing. People visit friends and relatives, exchanging gifts and sweets. This day strengthens social bonds and encourages communal harmony.
Traditional Attires and Their Significance
Pavadai Sattai and Dhavani
During Pongal, women often wear traditional attires like 'Pavadai Sattai' for younger girls and 'Dhavani' (or half-saree) for young women. The Pavadai Sattai, a long skirt with a blouse and a dupatta, is a symbol of youthful elegance. The Dhavani, comprising a skirt, blouse, and a draped dupatta, is a transitional garment signifying the coming of age. These garments are usually vibrant, reflecting the festive spirit, and are often adorned with beautiful patterns and motifs that have been passed down through generations.
Vesti / Dhothi for Men
For men, the traditional 'Vesti' (or Dhothi) is the attire of choice. This unstitched piece of cloth, wrapped around the waist and legs, is both graceful and comfortable. It is usually white or cream, symbolizing purity, and is often paired with a shirt or a traditional kurta. During Pongal, men also wear a version of the vesti known as 'Sattai', which is more formal and used for special occasions.
Culinary Delights of Pongal
Pongal is also a festival that celebrates the bounty of nature through its distinctive cuisine. The dish 'Pongal', which shares its name with the festival, is the centerpiece of the culinary offerings. It comes in two varieties - 'Sakkarai Pongal', a sweet version made with jaggery, and 'Ven Pongal', a savory version. Both are cooked with newly harvested rice, signifying abundance and prosperity.
Alongside Pongal, other dishes like 'Vadai', 'Payasam', and 'Ellu Urundai' (sesame balls) are also prepared. These dishes not only add to the festive spirit but also carry significant cultural and health values, with ingredients that are traditionally known for their nutritive benefits.
Festive Activities and Sports
Jallikattu /Manju Virattu / Veera Vilayattu
The most thrilling aspect of Mattu Pongal is 'Jallikattu', also known as 'Manju Virattu' or 'Veera Vilayattu'. It's a traditional bull-taming sport, deeply ingrained in Tamil culture. Participants attempt to grab the large hump on the bull's back with both arms and hang on to it while the bull tries to escape. Jallikattu is more than just a sport; it's a symbol of bravery and tradition, showcasing the strong bond between humans and animals.
Community Games and Activities
Pongal is also a time for various community games and activities. Traditional games like 'Kabaddi', 'Gilli-danda', and 'Kite flying' are popular. These activities not only provide entertainment but also foster community spirit and camaraderie among the participants.
Pongal Celebrations in Modern Times
The way Pongal is celebrated has evolved over time, adapting to the changes brought by urbanization and globalization. In cities, the space constraints might limit the grandeur of celebrations, but the essence remains the same. Modern technology and social media have also played a role in keeping the younger generation connected with these traditions, allowing them to participate in and promote the festivities, irrespective of their geographical locations.
Pongal Across Borders
With the Tamil diaspora spread across the globe, Pongal has transcended geographical boundaries. It's celebrated in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, and the USA, where Tamil communities gather to replicate the festivities of their homeland. These celebrations serve as a bridge connecting the younger generation to their roots and keeping the spirit of Tamil culture alive globally.
Personal Stories and Experiences
Including personal stories and experiences from individuals who celebrate Pongal can add a unique and relatable touch to the blog. These anecdotes can highlight the diversity within the Tamil community and how Pongal plays a significant role in their lives.
Pongal â More Than Just a Festival
Pongal is more than a mere cultural festival; it's a celebration of life, nature, and thanksgiving. It reinforces the values of gratitude, togetherness, and respect for nature in an increasingly materialistic world. It's a reminder of the simple yet profound joys of life that come from community and tradition.
Following image representing a different aspect of teaching children about their Tamil heritage in the context of Pongal, have been created. These images visually depict concepts like Cultural Identity and Roots, Preservation of Traditions, Appreciation of Diversity, Family Bonding, and Moral Values. You can view and use these images for your Instagram posts or other social media campaigns related to Shivangi's Pongal collection.
Conclusion
As we conclude this journey through the vibrant festival of Pongal, it's clear that this celebration is much more than a harvest festival. It's a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, offering a glimpse into the soul of its people. Pongal, with its deep-rooted traditions, delicious cuisines, and lively festivities,

Once more, gloom thickens on the sky: As light's cryptic bastard, this gloom.
Who has loved me forever Yet whose face I never caught Like that woman, Gloom thickens on the Falgun skies.
She scatters, perhaps to some lost city, an ashen palace Its mirth now smokes and fumbles past my heart.
On the coasts of the Indian Ocean Or the Mediterranean By the beaches of Tyre perhaps Not today, there was a city once, And a palace ablaze with ornaments Persian carpets, Kashmiri quilts, pearls brought forth through Bering's sway, My sunken heart, my still eyes, my lamented dreams, And you, woman- These were, once in the world.
The gentle hour reclines and gives in, Parrots and cockatoos aplenty, Mahogany silhouettes, dull and somber. Many shades of the sunshine, Many shades, there were; And you; Centuries have run amuck, but I have not seen your face, I seek not.
Falgun's gloom an aromatic parchment, the coastlines' sweat reclines and gives in, Enchanting domes, and their pillars' agonising lines, Scents of a pear that is not there, Countless wild deer, And felines interwoven on manuscripts patched with deep grey, Windows made bold with husks of Suryan slumber, Had it blown past? A peacock briefly nudges, from this transient chamber, Echoes out to another, then another. Dampening murmurs- A momentary awe, and silence!
On veils and carpets the waltz of haematic sweat Manic reds in a crimson grail! And your naked lonely hands;
Your naked lonely hands...
