Elijah + Katherine || Darkness found its light.

Today was one of the days where he could finally relax after his mother and father's yelling and fighting sermons. He hated being neglected from his own father. But Tony eventually learned to love him and they became stronger as ever. Elijah went out of the penthouse and went down to his father's laboratory, stopping upon seeing a beautiful brunette standing with his father. She looked just like Col. Lt. Rhodes, his father's best friend who he considered his uncle but a bit more light-skinned. He wondered if this beautiful creature was actually his daughter, she smelt just like him. A vampire but not a werewolf-vampire hybrid that he was.

Veronica sat quietly at the piano. She was almost positive that Katherine had gone out for one thing or another, and with the peppering snow fall outside she had no desire to venture out into the cold. With the light faded over the horizon, she played a small lullaby in the formal living room, just a small something to fill her evening.

Why she had found him, come for him was beyond him. Was she not angered at him for leaving, for giving her such an abrupt goodbye to a 500 year old love affair? She had to be. Elijah could see the storm brewing in her brown eyes as she stood before him in the middle of the street. She wouldn’t dare go to their home, risking crossing paths with Niklaus. Yet she had come to New Orleans.

The fluttering sound of a heartbeat was the first thing to capture his attention and after a brief explanation, Katherine then made her demand. Not so much of a demand as it was a question, but if she came all this way to ask, there was probably not a chance she would leave without an answer. 

"Of course you mattered," he replied, almost looking at her in disbelief. His lips parted, an argument ready to commence, yet Elijah stopped himself, looking away from her as he licked his lip, trying to get his mind in the right place. Finally daring to meet her gaze, he was sure to not look away this time around. "But my family will always come first. Niklaus is my brother, my blood. No matter how much he’s taken from me, from you… we have a chance at redemption. Rebekah has agreed to remain with us in New Orleans. I have no reason to leave." He knew he shouldn’t have said anything else. This was all she needed to know, that family would always be above all. Yet that small flicker of hope, stubborn and unwilling to die urged him to say one more thing. Just one more thing. "Perhaps one day…" They had an eternity ahead of them. This child would be born in a few months, Niklaus would hopefully by then commence his path to righteousness. One day he wouldn’t need Elijah’s guidance. If she waited for him… 

His thoughts were cut short by the sound of her heart beating. She was no longer supernatural, no longer a vampire or immortal. Katherine couldn’t wait for him. “I’m sorry.” No longer able to look at her and not be reminded of what he had to give up, Elijah turned and walked away from her. It was one thing to give her up when vampire. He’d held onto the hope that one day - whether it be in a hundred or a millennium, their paths would cross again, a new chance would be given. But, of course, he should have known… He couldn’t be asked to make the choice again, now that she was human, had but only a few decades ahead of her. It was cruel to ask such a thing from him. Mostly, Elijah feared that this time he would not choose Niklaus.
