tarek yassin skylar is one of the most impressive people ive ever come across.
the dedication and commitment taz showed to play sanji, knowing it was permanently changing his legs, having to basically rebuild them, becoming a borderline professional grade at multiple talents, especially when most people find it difficult to master one. and that doesn't even begin to cover the fact that he's a writer, with published and produced works and a prodessional surfboard shaper.

San Juan Surfboards Byron Bay in the seventies… great days indeed and a great place to hang out.
San Juan started in 1966 , it was at the forefront of design as many great shapers converged and compared ideas of design. We have a great example of a seventies model on display shaped by Bob McTavish.

TAMATO says : “ The artistic aspects, history & functionality of #surfboard design has always captivated my attention. #surfboards are literally what I like to call, Art in Motion… artistry that is designed so eloquently & meticulous that it could be used as a designer coffee table or hung on the wall to be examined & appreciated by the cerebral mind. But screw that idea, because surfboards are meant to be waxed up & ridden, not just collect dust! I love #exploring & experimenting with the vast diversity of #surfing equipment. Through my surfing lifetime, I’ve had the honor of working with some of the best #surf builders the planet has ever known. Here in post, I would like to give great #thanks & #appreciation to the shaper & craftsmen known only as @buddymccray . Buddy is my neighbor & long time friend whom I’ve had the pleasure of surfing with at various & undisclosed surf spots around the #beautiful #island of #oahu since I was a little kid. We’ve always had a similar taste in #wave appeal that led us to surfing many historical sessions together. As a master craftsman, Buddy has been designing & shaping @blastsurfdesigns for well over 4 decades now. Alan, Bud or Buddy as we like to call him pays extremely close attention to detail & it really shows in the precise & immaculate craftsmanship that he brings to life. Here in, Mr. McCray has blessed me with a 6’1” deep swallow, quad to help me go the speed of a rocket ship 🚀. I’ve already had a couple of sessions on her & needless to say, she’s working absolutely amazing. Influential Streetwear Brands that Shaped the Scene
Hey there, it’s Christy!
This week will be diving into some of the most influential streetwear brands that shaped the scene. Street style has created a revolution that fuses comfort, fit, and high-end fashion. It covers many ranges from the hip-hop-leaning old-school, the fashion-forward new-school, and everything in between. You can elevate your urban streetwear look from stylish tops, hoodies, sneakers, bottoms, sportswear, and jackets. There is something for everyone whether you want a luxury hype attire from high fashion designers or if you're in the mood for modern street styles. There are many cool street clothing brands to consider.
Now let's explore the best streetwear brands worth watching!
Supreme
Founded in 1994 in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, Supreme made its mark becoming the most well-known streetwear brands ever. The brand has an intelligent take when it comes to marketing by launching new limited drops weekly. Over the years, Supreme has been endorsed with well-known celebs such as Travis Scott, Kanye West, and Mike Tyson to name a few. And has collaborated with high end designer brands that has helped etched its name into streetwear history.  New York’s Supreme has become known to be the streetwear originals that has transformed the urban clothing scene.

Stüssy
Stüssy is another influential classic brand that inspired many streetwear designers and brands over the course of decades. The Stüssy brand originated from the Southern California surf scene and skate culture. Shawn Stussy was a surfboard shaper at the time who was able to bring over his own personal style and individualism to the fashion scene which made his brand stand out. Stussy began his small graphic tee brand in the 80’s by having his signature logo screen printed on tees, crewnecks, and hoodies. Soon enough it ended up gaining immense popularity transferring into a wide range of streetwear the brand offers. The brand continues to thrive as Stussy is a driving force in the streetwear couture. As well by giving forward thinking designs while staying true to its California roots.
Here we have a fun pop of color to add for a streetwear look! A perfect casual fit yet stylish. This is from the latest Stüssy Spring '23 Collection.

A Bathing Ape (Bape)
Bape was founded by Nigo also known as Tomoaki Nagao in Japan in 1993 at the beginning of the streetwear movement. According to Nigo the company’s name is a reference to the Japanese idiom “A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water” used to portray overindulgent behavior which entirely captures the whole essence of the brand. Over the history of Bape it has remained a continuous trailblazer in the fashion industry. Bape’s strategy of hype and scarcity made their brand into one of the most desired streetwear brands who even got their name into the American hip-hop scene. As for designs Bape is known for their bold graphics, eccentric colors, stylized camouflage patterns, and a subdued touch of the Japanese kawaii culture.
Here we have one of the most popular collection pieces which is the Bape shark hoodie. The hoodie is light and breathable made from high quality cotton that features bright prints.

Off-White
Off-White is one of the main forces behind the fusion of streetwear and high fashion. Off-White is Milian based founded by Virgil Abloh in 2012. The logo he described as “the gray area between black and white as the color “off-white” to the fashion world. The logo has attracted an international fan-base with its signature black and white diagonal stripes printed on each of the brand’s pieces. Virgil’s integration of culture and couture has created a streetwear name known for innovative designs and forward thinking, ironic tags, distinctive prints, and high-profile collaborations. Such as Timberland, Levi, Nike, Converse, and Jordan. RIP Virgil Abloh
Here we have Off-White X Levi's 2016 fall/winter denim collection. This collaboration was a hit that showcased key pieces. Such as the image below of a frayed denim jacket featuring a bold yellow accent.

HUF
HUF is another brand that has been influential in the streetwear scene. Huf got started in the early 90’s and originally the nickname of Keith Hufnagel who was a loyal skateboarder in the streets of New York in the 80’s. He merged his passion for skateboarding and streetwear perfectly in a way that made his brand a hotspot for everything skateboards. It is known for its clean aesthetic, provocative designs, limited runs of products, and quality craftsmanship. They're a brand that has the spirit of skateboarding and street culture. Over the years, HUF has been committed to pushing the culture forward and not allowing it to conform to it.
Here we have one of HUF women's fall collection inspired by the '90s. Featuring earth-tones, patterns, and cozy materials. Capturing a great take on a relax comfy streetwear look!

"Reno Abellira's Free Ride Boards: Shaping the Surfing Industry with Custom Craftsmanship and Collaboration"
Free ride boards offered opportunity to ride anything - Lightning bolts I rode - Parrish's, Jim Richardson's, and Reno's - No obligation to any shaper, surfboard industry not making megabucks
Surfboard shapers struggle financially in the surfing industry. - Reno Abellira puts in meticulous hours crafting boards. - Customers appreciate the handmade aspect and are willing to pay.
Reno Abellira made custom boards for me. - Ordered three free ride boards in 7'4", 7'8", and 8' sizes. - Mistakenly ordered them all 20 and a quarter inches wide.
Reno Abellira suggested a narrower board for a specific wave type. - Reno suggested a width of 19 inches instead of 20.25 inches for a 7'8'' surfboard.
- Reno recommended trusting his judgment.

Epic hustle: Christenson getting started shaping surfboards | surfboard shapers
Throwback to the days when hustle was my middle name! 🏄‍♂️💪 Renting a room with John Wagoner and Troy Peters at Rich Pavel's Choice Shaving Series in Point Loma was the start of an incredible journey. 🌊✨ Meeting Dick Brewer and his manager Paul Kelly changed everything - they saw potential in me and hired me on the spot! 🙌 From there, it was a whirlwind of opportunities. I was helping Sharpeye, working for Rusty Gns, and even took on a nighttime lainating job at AA Glassing in Brown Field by Imperial Beach. 🌙🔨
From roommates to surf industry success! 🏄‍♂️ Started at Rich Pavel's in Point Loma, met Dick Brewer, got hired, and hustled for Sharpeye and Rusty Gns. Even had a nighttime laminating job! 🌙 All while still going to college. Looking back, it's exhausting! #SurfLife #HustleHard #CollegeDays
I was determined to learn every aspect of the surf industry and I hustled like there was no tomorrow. 🌟💯 Balancing college and my passion wasn't easy, but looking back, I'm amazed at how I managed it all. 🎓💪 #ThrowbackThursday #SurfLife #HustleHard

Fish Surfboard: A Guide to One of the Most Versatile Boards by Solid Surfboards
For surfers looking to add something unique to their quiver, the fish surfboard is a popular choice. Known for its versatility and ease of use, this surfboard design has earned a place in the hearts of beginners and experienced surfers alike. Its wide outline, distinctive swallowtail, and twin fin setup make it a go-to option for those looking for speed, maneuverability, and fun in a variety of wave conditions.
Tumblr media
At Solid Surfboards, we pride ourselves on crafting high-performance fish surfboards that balance modern innovation with the classic design that has made the fish a staple in surf culture for decades. In this blog, we'll dive into what makes the fish surfboard such a fantastic board, why it might be the perfect addition to your quiver, and how Solid Surfboards delivers the best fish designs for surfers of all levels.
The History of the Fish Surfboard The fish surfboard originated in the early 1970s, largely credited to San Diego surfer and shaper Steve Lis. Initially crafted from a kneeboard design, the fish quickly caught on due to its ability to perform in small, mushy waves while still offering high-speed performance in more powerful surf. Its wide nose, short length, and distinct swallowtail allowed surfers to generate speed easily and maneuver with fluidity. The fish design became a favorite for many surfers, particularly in conditions where traditional shortboards struggled to maintain speed and flow.
Today, the fish surfboard has evolved, with shapers like those at Solid Surfboards refining the classic design to enhance its performance in a wider range of wave conditions. Modern fish surfboards maintain the core features that made them famous but now offer more versatility through improved materials, fin setups, and slight tweaks to the shape.
Key Features of a Fish Surfboard What sets a fish surfboard apart from other boards are a few distinct design elements that work together to provide a unique surfing experience. Here are the key characteristics of a fish surfboard:
1. Shorter Length:Fish surfboards are typically shorter than traditional shortboards, often ranging from 5’ to 6’6” in length. This compact size allows for quick, responsive turns while maintaining a level of buoyancy that helps catch waves with ease.
2. Wide Template:One of the most recognizable features of a fish surfboard is its wide outline, particularly through the middle and the nose. This width helps generate speed, especially in smaller, weaker waves where speed is often hard to find. It also provides extra stability, making the fish an excellent choice for beginner and intermediate surfers.
3. Swallowtail Design:The fish surfboard's iconic swallowtail is more than just a visual signature—it's a critical part of the board’s performance. The cut-out shape of the tail allows water to flow through the channels more efficiently, giving the board extra hold in turns without sacrificing speed. The swallowtail also helps maintain control in steep sections of a wave.
4. Twin Fin Setup:Most fish surfboards feature a twin fin setup, which provides the loose, skate-like feel that surfers love. This setup allows for quick, sharp turns and helps maintain speed down the line. Twin fins also create less drag than a tri-fin setup, making the board feel faster and more lively underfoot.
5. Fuller Rails:Fish surfboards typically have fuller rails, which provide more flotation and stability. This design feature enhances paddling efficiency and makes it easier for surfers to catch waves, especially for those just starting out.
Why Choose a Fish Surfboard? The fish surfboard is beloved for several reasons, and its versatility is at the top of the list. Whether you’re a beginner looking for a board that will help you progress quickly or an advanced surfer searching for a fun alternative to a standard shortboard, a fish can offer something unique to your surfing experience.
1. Speed in Small Waves:One of the fish’s greatest strengths is its ability to generate speed in small, gutless waves. The wide outline and twin fin setup work together to keep the board moving even in less-than-ideal conditions. This makes the fish a perfect board for summer surfing or when you’re stuck in smaller surf but still want to have a fun session.
2. Maneuverability:Despite its wide shape, the fish surfboard is highly maneuverable. The short length combined with the twin fin setup allows for quick, snappy turns and a loose, playful feel. Surfers can easily transition from rail to rail, making the fish a great board for carving and performing stylish, fluid turns.
3. Great for All Skill Levels:Whether you're just starting out or have been surfing for years, a fish surfboard can suit your needs. For beginners, the added stability and ease of paddling make it an excellent board for catching waves and learning to turn. For advanced surfers, the fish provides a fun, alternative board that excels in conditions where a shortboard might struggle.
4. Versatility Across Conditions:While the fish is known for excelling in small, mushy waves, it’s also versatile enough to handle larger surf. The swallowtail provides enough hold in steeper sections of a wave, and the twin fins allow for fast, controlled turns even in more powerful conditions. This makes the fish a great all-around board for surfers looking to tackle a variety of wave sizes.
Solid Surfboards' Fish Models At Solid Surfboards, we offer a range of fish surfboards that cater to different surfing styles and skill levels. Our designs focus on providing the best balance between speed, control, and fun, making our fish surfboards a favorite among surfers of all levels. Here are a few key models:

The Retro Fish: Inspired by the original designs of the 1970s, this model offers a true throwback feel with wide dimensions, a deep swallowtail, and a classic twin fin setup.
Conclusion:The fish surfboard is one of the most versatile and fun boards in the surfing world, and at Solid Surfboards, we’re proud to offer some of the best fish designs available.
