The Reaper is Dead
“This Reaper is Dead the Same Way Commander Shepard is Dead.” That is the first file that Jacob Taylor found. He was in full suit, for everyone thought that there might be something going on, and his captain wanted him to take care, the best he could. It almost killed him looking at it. It had been almost three years, since Shepard died on Citadel. The Reapers were dead. She had done what they had asked her to do.
“Whoever wrote this was going to pay for their insensitivity,” Jacob vowed.
Maranda Lawson came over his headset. “Stay focused.”
“I am sending you everything on this computer. It’s all heavily encrypted. It will take weeks for anyone to crack it. If someone will ever be able to crack it,” he said, before he sent all of the contents on the computer.
“Hopefully you can find the person who wrote it,” Miranda said.
“When did you become the optimist?” Jacob asked, with a slight laugh.
“The galaxy needs an optimist right now,” Miranda said, with a sigh.
“No what the galaxy needs…”
“Not right now,” Miranda stated her voice was stronger. “We cannot keep doing this. She is gone and we are not. We need to pull the galaxy back together.”
“I know,” Jacob said, taking a step away from the computer screen. “That is why we are here. Find out what we can about the reapers.”
“Now go,” Miranda said.
Jacob shook his head before he started walking away. He pulled his gun out and gripped it tightly. He then heard it. The familiar groan of the husks. He turned to see three shuffling toward him. He shot all three of them, dead in the head. They didn’t stop moving, and Jacob froze. Jacob shot three more times, still nothing. “This is bad,” Jacob said.
“What’s going on?” Miranda asked.
“Husks. Three of them,” Jacob said.
“That’s impossible,” Miranda said.
“There are three of them. I see them, but I don’t know what to do about them,” Jacob said.
“If they are there, just shoot them.”
“My bullets don’t seem to be doing anything to them,” Jacob said, firing three more off.
“Get out of there. Let’s regroup and try again,” Miranda said.
“We might not get another chance like this,” Jacob said, firing off three more shots. “I am going to make a run for it.”
He ran going towards a door. Then another and another and they kept following him. No matter how far he thought he got from them they were only a few feet behind him. He finally found himself in a room that looked like the heart of the reaper. There was a person sitting there with a helmet on, a full body suit, it looked to be female, but Jacob couldn’t be sure of that. They turned to look at him. “Who are you?” the person asked, standing up from the ground.
“Who are you?” Jacob asked, taking a step closer lifting his gun right at the person’s head.
The person shook their head. “Put that away, before you hurt yourself.”
“You have no weapons,” Jacob said, keeping a tight grip on his gun.
“I don’t need weapons,” the person said, taking a step away from Jacob.
“Are you saying you have biotic abilities?” Jacob asked.
“I am not claiming anything,” the person said, looking over Jacob’s shoulder.
“The husks are coming. We need to get somewhere safe,” Jacob said, turning around to look the husks that were dragging themselves toward the two of them standing far from the door.
“We are somewhere safe,” the person said, with a slight laugh.
“Why aren’t you afraid of the husks?” Jacob asked, pointing the gun toward the husk.
The person walked over to the husks and put their hand through them. “They aren’t real. I would most likely be scared of a real husk, still.”
“They seemed so real,” Jacob said, walking toward the husks.
“They are meant to,” the person said. “It is a security measure. It is supposed to scare anyone from using it, from being here. You are in no more danger than any other time you walk around a derelict reaper. I wish to know why you are here. No, better question how did you get here?” the person asked, turning back toward Jacob.
“We flew here. How did you get here?”
“I don’t know,” the person said, taking a few steps away from Jacob. “What do you mean you flew here? You are Alliance, are you not?”
“Why would you think that I am?” Jacob asked, looking down at his uniform. There was not a single emblem from the Alliance on it.
The person laughed. “You looked.” The person paused to make sure that Jacob got the joke. “You held your gun like you were trained by them, and a lot of your equipment is standard Alliance, but I didn’t know for sure until you looked down.”
“You played me?” Jacob asked, lifting his gun a little surer.
“No, I took an educated guess. That again begs the question how did you get here. As far as I understood every Alliance ship was supposed to be at the battle on earth. That either means for some reason this ship wasn’t near earth, or they got the mass relays working again.” The person that seemed trapped in their own thoughts turned to Jacob with great force. “They fixed some of the mass relays?”
“They have fixed most of them.”
“This must have been one of the newest relays to get fixed,” the person said, nodding their head. “Which was the first?”
“The one in the sol system,” Jacob said, shaking his head. “Now…”
“Then I am guessing that the one in the Annos Basin would be next. The Salarians would have made quick work of getting Sur-kesh connected back into the rest of the galaxy,” the person said, taking a few more steps.
“Yes, but…”
“Then they would have done the one in the Apien Crest,” the person said, taking another step away from the person.
“Actually, they did the one in the Perseus Vail next,” Jacob said, finally feeling a little superior because he was able to correct this person that seemed to be running the show.
The person let out a slight laugh. “I guess the Quarian’s really wanted to make sure that they stayed connected to the galaxy. I sometimes forget the ingenuity of their kind. I shouldn’t though. I have known a lot of smart Quarians, and I have learned a lot from the Quarian people.”
“You aren’t Quarian?” Jacob asked.
The person looked down at themselves and laughed. “I guess I do look like a Quarian, but like you have noticed we have to keep our helmets on in this place.”
“So, what are you?”
“That really isn’t important,” the person said, turning their attention back to Jacob. “None of this is important though, and I am sorry for wasting your time. I sounded like a Salarian that I once knew.”
“So, you aren’t Salarian either?” Jacob asked.
“Why are you here?” the person asked, looking at Jacob.
“Why are you here?” Jacob asked the person.
“I came here after the battle on earth.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“That isn’t helpful,” Jacob said, putting his gun away.
“Putting your gun away, you must trust me,” the person said with a slight laugh.
“You haven’t reached for any kind of gun.”
I thought with all the free time I would post some of my old stuff and then get to my new stuff.

REPORT: THE DUSK INCIDENT - 6272696E6B
DISPATCH: To Agent 157-QL-F6
Agent Dusk,
Due to recent events, the Rapid Evening has initiated a new protocol for primary agents. Between assignments, agents will undergo simulations in order to assure that no attachments have been formed between satellite and primary agents. You previously consented to undergo these simulations. After you have completed the simulations that were selected for you, which will double as an evaluation, you will be reassigned.
These simulations are voluntary, and you may withdraw your consent at any point. However, they are also mandatory in order to ensure that you are qualified for future primary assignments. Keep this in mind.

TRAINING SIMULATION: 4457203 - DELTA - RQ
Simulation description:
Open your eyes, AGENT DUSK.
As you can see, this simulation has placed you into a public area that you do not know. This area is not on Kesh, nor is it any area that you have surveilled on any of your previous assignments. If you recognize it from a previous assignment, you must say so now.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Uhhh, nope, looks all clear to me. What am I supposed to be looking for here?]
This simulation has not yet entered the interactive phase. Please wait for the simulation guidelines to complete.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Yeah, yeah, whatever. You said I’ve done this before?]
All primary agents must complete these simulations.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: If you say so.]
Confirmed: no recognition. Thank you, AGENT DUSK. As you examine your sur
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Wait, have I been here before? (OUTPUT: no response permitted. Simulation continues.)]
roundings, take note of the civilian population. Take note of the architecture. While Crystal Palace will undoubtedly know where you are, the Rapid Evening may not know where to look for you. You must be able to guide them to you.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: O… kay, this seems weird. This definitely seems weird. (OUTPUT: no response required. Agent complaints noted. Simulation continues.)]
Take a breath. Notice how it feels in your lungs. You must learn to understand atmospheres. No two atmospheres are the same, not even on the same planet.
Breathe in again. Are you cold? You should not be cold. Or perhaps you should. What would you guess, based on the simulation? You must learn to guess.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: If Crystal Palace knows everything, why do I need to know how to guess what’s in an atmosphere?]
You are far too skilled to ask such questions, AGENT DUSK.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Ha! If you say so.]
The Rapid Evening would not work with you if you were not skilled.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Yeah, whatever. I’m looking around, I’m assessing, I’m… holy shit, Gray? (ALERT. RECOGNITION. ALERT.)]
AGENT DUSK, there is nobody here by the name of Gray.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: It… (subject inhales) nobody?]
Nobody.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Fuck. Okay. I don’t… know what that was. Sorry, sim. (ALERT: Downgraded by one level. Subject recognition is not sustained. Simulation has maintained integrity.)]
Are you able to continue, AGENT DUSK?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: (subject exhales) Yeah. Yeah, I’m good.]
Simulation assessment: The initial recognition could potentially be problematic. Agent Dusk is too powerful an asset to lose to something as simple as sentiment. See what you can do.

TRAINING SIMULATION: 9950524 - UPSILON - TT
Simulation description:
Open your eyes, AGENT DUSK.
You are in a standard primary agent observation cell. You have received technical training on all of the equipment that is available to you. Do you understand how to work this equipment?
[VISUAL NOTE: Agent Dusk appears to reach automatically for the audio recorder. This is, again, a potential issue, given her history; agent’s action has been noted.]
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I don’t think you would give me this job if I didn’t understand how this stuff worked. Are you sure that I have to go through this every time?]
This is standard for all primary agents, AGENT DUSK.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Are you sure it is? I don’t remember going through this any previous times.]
These simulations are not designed to be remembered.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: What’s that supposed to mean? (OUTPUT: no response permitted. Simulation continues.)]
Over the next six hours, you will be in touch with a simulated satellite agent. This simulation is designed to examine your interactions with your satellite agent.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: What’s the point of doing this if I don’t remember?]
You do not consciously remember, AGENT DUSK. That is not the same thing as not remembering at all. You are receiving a transmission from your satellite agent.
[VISUAL NOTE: Agent Dusk reaches for an old-style ink-and-paper printer, which is printing out a binary message. Scanning binary message: 01000010 01010010 01001001 01001110 01001011 ALERT. ALERT. SIMULATION HAS BEEN BREACHED. SIMULATION HAS B
Simulation notes: Some work to do on this one. Obviously.

TRAINING SIMULATION: 0191201 - SIGMA - JM
Simulation description:
Open your eyes, AGENT DUSK.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Uh… what am I supposed to be looking at here?]
This is what you need to remember.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I thought I wasn’t supposed to remember these.]
I don’t think I did this right.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: ...sim?]
Listen, I’m going to give it another shot with the next one. But for now, this is what you need to remember.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Gray? Is that… is that you?]
No, but she’s going to be so fucking relieved that you remember her. Look at the blueprints, Demani.
[ALERT. SIMULATION HAS BEEN BREACHED. SIMULATION H
Yeah, yeah, you fucking piece of mesh bullshit, I get it.

Are you reading th-
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Yeah, god, I’m reading the blueprints, can you quiet down for a minute and let me read?]
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: ...you still here?]
You asked for quiet.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I guess I did.]
I don’t know how much longer you have, so just… read the blueprints, okay? I’ll be back in the next sim. Or the one after.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Am I going to remember this?]
If you don’t, we’ll get it back for you. That’s a promise.
I don’t think the blueprints are going to last.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I’ve got enough.]
Okay. Stay safe in here.
Simulation notes: Increase defenses. Prepare for stratus attack. They will try again. Agent Dusk is an asset. Why is this so fucking difficult to understand?

TRAINING SIMULATION: 6302841 - KAPPA - ERROR. ERROR. SIMULATION HAS BEEN ALTERED.
Simulation description:
Demani?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Morning’s?]
Holy shit. I did it. Oh my god, Demani, we thought they fucking brain-zapped you or something, we thought that you had amnesia or some shit.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I don’t think they could zap me that hard. It’s all still a little fuzzy, but this… this is the Brink, isn’t it?]
Yeah, it is. You remember it?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: It’s like remembering a dream.]
No dream. Or, well, a metaphorical dream, but not a literal one, because it’s a very, very real place. You scared the shit out of us, you know that? Gray kept saying that she thought they’d try and take her, something about synthetic beings being easier to overwrite like this.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Let’s not underestimate the sheer power of scientific bullshit that Crystal Palace can get up to.]
Yeah, I guess. But in the meantime, just… sit down for a while, okay? Gray’s on her way, you have the blueprints - uh, you still remember the blueprints, right? How to get from here to the hangar?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I remember enough. Is there a reason I can’t see you?]
It’s because doing this is giving me the most killer migraine I’ve ever had, and I’ve had some pretty killer migraines.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Shit, then why-]
Because if I stop, then I don’t know if the simulation is going to be able to actually impact you again. And I can, like, take a nap or something on the way home. I think I’d rather take a nap on the way home than let this go too early.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Fine, but if you’re with Gray you’d better make sure she’s keeping an eye on you.]
Oh, she didn’t even want me doing this much. Thought the blueprints would be enough. But I forgot to give you a timeframe, and that’s kind of just embarrassing, so I made up an excuse - don’t tell her any of this, she’s going to give me so much shit for going in again. But mostly I just wanted to… to actually talk to you correctly.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: (subject exhales) I’m okay, Mor.]
Are you? Like, are you actually?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: I think so.]
Okay, well. Hang tight. I’m going to try and maintain this for as long as I can. As soon as it drops, you gotta be ready to go, okay?
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Don’t hurt yourself, alright? I can get out just fine.]
It’s total bullshit that you’re taking care of me right now. You’re the one who got kidnapped. Just… rest up. Don’t worry about me, I’m going to pass out as soon as this is dropped, anyways.
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: What do you mean, don’t worry, you’re just going to pass out for fun?]
It’s not gonna be fun-
[AUDIO INPUT - DEMANI DUSK: Jesus fucking Christ.]
Yeah, I know. I know.
We’ll get you home soon.
Simulation notes: you rapid evening bullshit motherfuckers can get fucked

My Modern Rendition of the Kesh Temple Hymn, One of the World’s Oldest Known Literary Works
(My modern-day rendition of the Kesh Temple Hymn, in a dried state prior to firing. Although kiln technology was suitably advanced, most ancient cuneiform texts were not fired: most fired tablets were fired by modern museums.)
(final fired version)
The Kesh Temple Hymn is one of the world’s oldest known literary compositions, dating to at least 4,500 years ago along with the Instructions of Shuruppak, a compilation of proverbial advice, and a composition called “Evil Mouth,” now being edited by Jana Matuszak, which involves wide-ranging and crude insults that seems to provoke the anger of the goddess Inana and her right to behave impetuously. There are actually a number of other literary texts from this early period, coming chiefly from the sites of Tell Fara (ancient Shuruppak) and Tell Abu-Salabikh (ancient name uncertain: possibly Eresh), but most of them lack parallels from later periods when Sumerian was rendered more explicitly and are therefore highly enigmatic (the very earliest period of cuneiform, the so-called Archaic or proto-Literate period, has not yet produced an unequivocal example of a literary text with complete sentences and a (reasonably) coherent narrative).
(the oldest version of the Kesh Temple Hymn, found at Tell abu-Salabikh, identified, copied, and published by Robert Biggs of the Oriental Institute)
Like the Instructions of Shuruppak, the Kesh Temple Hymn remained in circulation for centuries. Most manuscripts of this text date from around 3,800 to 3,700 years ago.
(A single column “imgida” manuscript of the Kesh Temple Hymn from Old Babylonian Nippur, now in the University Museum in Philadelphia)
The Kesh Temple Hymn is a text devoted to the praise of the temple of the birth goddess Nintur at the southern Mesopotamian city of Kesh (exact location uncertain), who is also referred to as the goddess Ninhursanga (several mother goddesses were partially interchangeable) and her offspring, the relatively obscure god Ashgi, who is described as the temple’s “hero” (Sumerian ur-saj). The beginning of the text describes Enlil, the king of the gods, examining the world and choosing the city of Kesh from among it. Enlil then praises the temple, which is dutifully written down on a tablet by Nisaba, the goddess of grain and the patron deity of scribes, presumably indicating the divine authorship of the rest of the text. Much of the rest of the text is devoted to the praise of the temple utilizing vivid and highly abstract natural imagery. When I looked over the ancient originals to prepare the text featured on this piece, I found a previously misread reference to ants (Sumerian kiši6, kiši8, kiši9). The line is obscure, but seems to be stating that ants incised the temple, perhaps referring to the marks left by tunneling ants. Much later, in the encyclopedic omen tradition of Shumma Alu, finding ants in the foundation of a house was considered an ominous event (a good omen if the ants were black, a bad omen if they were any other color).
(A fragment of a tablet of the vast omen series Shumma Alu from the library of the Neo-Assyrian king Assurbanipal. Two omens involving ants in the foundations of a building occur in the third and fourth lines after the first preserved ruling, photo credit British Museum via the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative)
A central theme of the Kesh temple’s conception is its enormity (expressed explicitly at one point in the text with enormous measurements) manifesting itself in the realms of heaven, earth, and the subterranean abzu (the distant precursor of English “abyss”). This reflects the widespread ancient Mesopotamian notion that temples were understood at some level to be representations of the cosmos. Another central theme of the text is the temple’s ineffability: ancient Mesopotamian temples existed primarily as the residence of a god, not as a place of public worship. The disturbance of a temple and the prospect of the divine abandonment of a temple by its patron deity were matters of the utmost severity. The Kesh Temple Hymn is divided into eight (and in a few versions, ten) sections each enigmatically labelled “first-eighth temple,” with the same three concluding lines: “Will anyone produce anything as surpassing as Keš? Has any mother given birth to anything as surpassing as its hero Ašgi? Who has seen anything as surpassing as its lady Nintur? “ Near the conclusion of the text, there is a description of a royal ritual involving the king and a stone vessel (Sumerian bur) and numerous cultic officials, some of which are mentioned only in this text and a scant few other instances, as well as a vocal and musical performance, apparently as a prelude to a banquet of the patron goddess. A similar royal ritual involving a stone vessel is described in the Sumerian debate poem “Hoe and Plow,” where it involves an agricultural ritual for the plowing at the beginning of the planting cycle in the month of shu-numun/du’uzu (approximately June-July), although there is no evidence that the ritual described in the Kesh Temple Hymn specifically involved the agricultural cycle. In Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta (308f.), the hero king Enmerkar of Uruk’s use of stone bowls to grow grain at sunrise using water from both the Tigris and Euphrates in response to his rival’s challenge may possess ritual connotation as well.
The Kesh Temple Hymn survives to us in a number of sources, (around 90 manuscripts and fragments according to my current tally) mainly known from the Old Babylonian period (dating around 3,800 to 3,700 years ago). Even though the city of Kesh had become largely irrelevant by this period politically, the text was still popular in southern Mesopotamia at this time.
(This is the conclusion of a loan of grain made during the reign of the Old Babylonian king Samsuiluna. The authoring scribe has the city name of Kesh in his name, in a sentence usually used for deities: Kesh-iddinam “(the city of) Kesh gave to me”)
As is always the case with ancient Sumerian texts for which many manuscripts survive, there is some variance between the sources. This is the master text I selected for the tablet, followed by my translation. It favors the sources from the city of Nippur, which generally seems to have had the most reliable knowledge of the Sumerian language in its scribal schools. Recently a few important manuscripts have come to light, including a four-sided prism bearing the entire composition housed in the University of California, Los Angeles and several more manuscripts in the massive private collection of Martin Schoyen. Three other four-sided prisms containing the composition are known: one in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, another in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, and a small fragment of a prism in the University Museum in Philadelphia.
