[ 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄 ]: "Greetings Etie." Panette approaches her fellow redhead with her typical greeting. "Wait a minute... You appear... different. Did you change your workout routine? Your abdominal muscles are... What is everyone saying... marvelously... popping! I think."
𝐅𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐒 ( still accepting! )
"Oh? Keen eye there, Panette."
Pride swells in Etie's chest as she flips her hair triumphantly, delighted to see someone notice the changes in her physique. It was something she had been keeping track of herself, ever since switching up her usual exercise routine.
Her muscle bulk still needed a bit of work... but she at least felt stronger, and that was the important thing. All the better to protect her friends with.
"Thanks. My abs are glorious, aren't they?" She grins proudly, "I've been trying to incorporate more Brodian strength exercises into my usual routine. Did you know that King Diamant runs over three mountain ranges? BEFORE breakfast?"
She shakes her head, tongue clicking. "I heard it from Jade once, and just about nearly lost my head! Those guys are on a completely different level... I'd love to be there, too."
Etie pauses as an idea comes to her, and she perks up, beaming. "Hey! Maybe we can run together! I've got strong legs, and you can swing an axe around like no one's business—I bet you can handle a mountain range or three."

a kiss between enemies who should be fighting (( pretend like this is from panette.... lmao ))
kissies :3 (accepting)
"Panette, doll, shouldn't you be on the other side of the battle?" Zephia glances up, setting aside the sword she had been scrapping absentmindly against the ground. The smaller woman is before her and Zephia grabs a strand of her long orange hair as she stands to circle around Panette like she's some sort of vulture waiting to swoop down upon her prey.
She kisses the ends of the girl's hair gently, smirking before picking her up into her arms like the little doll that she was. She plants another kiss on Panette's lips before abruptly dropping her on the ground.
"Run along now. Wouldn't want to get... caught, would you? Don't worry, I'll give you time to get away. But remember dear little doll, we are enemies."

This doesn't seem to be reflected in the English localization but the way Panette speaks is...fucking weird? She'll end sentences with -de gozaimasu desu, which is a combination I've never heard in all my weebhood. As far as I understand grammar (admittedly not my strongest suit), if you've got -de gozaimasu you don't need -desu; they're different conjugations of the same verb.
It reminds me of when you're learning proper Japanese and you slap -desu everywhere because you're terrified of being rude.
(I blurted out いいえです once and got the most "bless your heart, at least you're trying" look lmfao)
It could very well be that her speech pattern is totally precedented in the typical "nobody in real life speaks like this but when it comes to cartoons--" way; I had never run into Kolulu's -de gonsu construction before Granblue, either.
I think, though, that she might just...speak kind of badly.
You know how I was mulling last night over how her desperate need to present herself like a noble verbally doesn't match the goth clown aesthetic? It would make way more sense if, just like with how her appearance doesn't gel with the noble image she wants to impart, her speech was not actual authentic keigo either.
It makes her gag have a consistent throughline. Visually, she understands that noblewomen wear dresses--but she wears a goth dress because she doesn't know the actual fashion, and in text, she understands that noblewomen use -desu--but doesn't fully understand how to correctly use it. She's trying, but blatantly not fitting in. Same gag as Charlotte.
There's also a bit in her Saphir C support where Saphir goes "you're going to teach me fanciness?" with special emphasis on the you, as if it were obvious to all characters in-universe that Panette is a terrible candidate for teaching this.
Her "fancy voice" grammar is perfectly fine in English, though, which--
--wait. Wait, is this what they were trying to cue with her calling Timerra "boss?" I've been wondering about that, because she calls her a very normal hime-sama/princess in Japanese. "Boss" definitely doesn't fit the image she's trying to present. I had guessed she was doing it as a pet name to cue their closeness, but it would totally fit as an attempt to show that she doesn't really understand formality.
Underline 'attempt,' though...in English the error only shines through when she's speaking to/of Timerra, where in Japanese she consistently sounds bizarre. That's why I thought it was a pet name rather than a purposeful error; she's plenty coherent talking to everyone else.

@atefirom sent:
Okay so, she’s never seen a ghost, but this may come close. Panette stops in her tracks. Blinks. This, this is real, right? To be sure, it is not an “a real live emblem is here” kind of awestruck but more of a…
“What the hell are you doing here?!” Her voice bounces off the stone and across the hallway, sure to garner some looks in her direction. Remembering where and how she tries to present herself, she clears her throat and places both hands clasped in front of her in a more docile manner. Schooling her tone back to neutral to draw attention off her, she says, “Ahem. That is what I heard that… that bandit say when I encountered him again. Small town.”
She wears content now with a satisfied and pleasant smile as people shook their heads and moved along. That expression quickly falls as she strides toward the gaudy bowed freak.
“I don’t know what kind of trick you have going on here but…!” She begins, but fails to finish what she started. A rare occurrence indeed. Is there a real reason to be upset with her being here? Maybe, maybe not.
Admittedly, she did feel a twinge of pity for the girl in front of her, maybe even empathy, moments before she.. Well. But that doesn’t explain why she’s here. Panette releases an annoyed huff of air and crosses her arms. “Hmph… I guess it’s ain’t none of my business really… Carry on.”
Tumblr media
She hears the girl far before she sees her. Marni is no stranger to being sworn at and generally speaking, she tended to deserve it. There's not really much of a point in pulling punches with someone who isn't going to do the same. What is strange is hearing someone trying to soften their words after swearing at her. Most didn't bother.
This girl… wasn't she one of Solm's royal knights? The one with the goofy outfit and the weird face paint? Marni had threatened to kill their queen and splatter her blood all over the palace, so the yelling definitely tracked. This one was, indeed, totally on her. She did do that and only felt a little bad.
Marni rests her knuckles on her hips, all bravado and conceit.
"Surprised? Guess I'm harder to kill than everyone thought!" Marni grins, leaning forward. "If you want me dead, you gotta try way harder than that!"
(That's not true. She remembers how that knife felt in her gut. She remembers getting lightheaded as blood gushed out of her wound. She understands just as little as everyone else how she might still be alive.)
This isn't the island Marni had been on for a whole month. She's back on monastery grounds now, which means she can no longer act as recklessly as she had. The walls here have eyes and ears; she can be sure that if she steps out of line here, everyone and their mother will know about it.
So instead of taunting further, she steps back.
"I'm not gonna get into any fights where Lady Veyle can see, so as long as you mind your business, I'll mind mine."
...Probably.

in hindsight its sort of silly of panette to ever suspect pandreo to resent her. he can't resent her nor anyone in his entire life he has already developed a fawn response to stress from his severe abandonment trauma

“All right, here goes nothin’,” Panette mutters with a wicked grin on her face.
One must always be prepared for combat, this much is true where she had grown up and maybe less now here at the academy, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a little extra… practice. Granted, being sneaky is not Panette’s forte from the way she dresses, speaks, and even down to her weapon choice. The axe is strong but slow and even her fists, well there is no subtlety there.
She has been working to improve on it, though this is her first attempt at it really. Presently, she hides in a large bush waiting for her subject to pass by. So far she has been masterfully concealed as no one seems to pay her any mind, or they just do not care.
She stays on her toes until she spots another shade of red. Wait… Wait… Panette leaps out, leaving a flutter of leaves in her wake and jumps in front of her. “Hah!” Feeling satisfied with her performance, her lips curl into a small smile. “Greetings Etie, was that enough to affright you? I have been working on my sneaking skills.”
There's a nondescript hum on Etie's lips as she walks through the courtyard, rhythmically tapping a pair of gardening shears against her palm. Today was her turn to volunteer in the greenhouse, and the thought of tending to so many varieties of flowers and plants had her in a pretty good mood.
Unbeknownst to her, something was about to dampen that mood...
In the form of a pale, ghoulish girl, leaping from the bushes—the combination of vibrant makeup, tattered patches of colorful cloth edging her skirts, and golden eyes framed by fiery hair, all melded together for one striking jumpscare. And for Etie's part? She was certainly scared.
Etie whips out the gardening shears, waving them threateningly at the girl as she flails into a defensive stance. "WAAAAAH... hhhya... ya... yah...?"
She pauses as recognition dawns, shears hanging limp in her hand. "...Wait, Panette? Geez! Well, it sure did work! Couldn't you have greeted me in a more—I don't know—conventional way!? A 'hello' would have sufficed!"
A short huff, as her expression slowly softens. "Buuut... conventional isn't how we redheads do things, is it? It's why we get along so well." She grins, "Sneaking practice aside, it's great to see you again. I had no idea you were coming! I'd show you around, but I've got a date with a few flowers..." She gestures to the greenhouse in the distance, "Unless you'd like to join me?"

Two Taciticians and a Berserker Walk Into a Bar
Are you stuck with glass bones and paper skin? Sick of just having pedestrian magic to your name? The professors are holding a special class for the squishiest of mages, clerics, and archers, where they may learn close-quarters self-defense if they’re ambushed by an enemy. [Grants Gauntlets +1]
mission board starter for @apostatizing and @breidabloom
Zephia would never call herself a "squishy mage" but it seems she has put herself in a position that she is meant to be teaching a seminar on self-defense. How curious. Why her of all people? She knew that she was strong, but anyone else would guess that she was just a typical mage looking at her. Except for Lord Sombron, he had always known the true strength lingering within her.
She smiles at the two kids before, well... more at the one who did not happen to be from Elyos. Luckily, she is not stuck with one of those little royals who seemed to plague her so much. Or even worse: the Divine Dragon. Still, that orange that burns as bright as the desert sun reflecting across the sand blazes her heart, driving another stake into her as if to push home the point that she would never be the good that everyone wished to see in this world.
"How wonderful to have you both here for this little lesson! I simply couldn't be more excited to impart such useful life lessons upon you children." Her words are through gritted teeth, trying to keep up a smile as to not terrify the poor little Blue Lion. As for Panette, she didn't care what the girl thought of her. Surely she shared the same sentiment as her liege, if she had even bothered to remember who Zephia was at all.
"Now then, however should we get started?"

Someone - or something - has been disturbing graves in the monastery’s graveyard. The knights are busy with preparations for the monastery’s defenses, and so patrols to the site have not been a priority. If you have some rare free time, would you bring peace back to these departed souls? Then find the culprit, even if it means having to spend the night surrounded by the dead.
When she looks up at the sky, she wonders if it will rain soon. The sun becomes obscured with each passing cloud, bringing itself ever-so distant from her grasp. Then, she looks down. It is better (a must, rather) to stare at reality than become absorbed in the clouds. She knows this. Should a raindrop happen to fall, she will accept it.
One step, two steps, three downwards. On the last one, the side of her shoe brushed against a fallen petal. Céline follows its trail, only to find a broken bouquet off in the graveyard's corner. The princess bends forward, picking up a flower void of color. Her eyes close momentarily, fingers wrapped tightly around its stem. She hardly knows for certain what might have occurred, but she is confident in one thing— The mess that now filled this premise will grant no peace.
Even so, she places it back on the ground in a neat pile. She cannot whisk away the rubble and unruliness of the graveyard if she keeps holding onto it. It is the sound of a stride that causes Céline to whirl around. At first, perhaps it is oncoming rain. No, that sound is much more distinct. There is the familiar silhouette of Panette, prompting Céline to approach first.
"My greetings, Panette." She pauses, turning back around towards the grounds. "A saddening sight, is it not?"

Tbh I don’t quite understand the sentiment that Engage doesn’t have good or any worldbuilding at all, like tf is up with that. First instinct would be “them 3H fans again!!!” but other long time FE fans also consider it lackluster and idk I don’t agree.
Each of the four nations all have surface level distinctions, but in-depth internal layers, such as...
Firene values peace, gratitude, and its harvests, tea, and medicine. It’s the kingdom that would usually be taken advantage of, but the reason it maintains its peace is through aggressive policy done by its leaders, currently by Eve and very notably followed up by Celine. Medicine and health is taken seriously cuz the last king died from an illness, the same illness which the current and well loved prince is suffering from. The Firene retainers are all nobles sans Louis, who is noted to have gotten his role because of his domestic skill in tandem with his martial prowess; this implies a sort of status quo, one that’s maintained to keep things peaceful, though not overly enforced to the point of oppression.
Brodia is wealthy and martially strong, yet prideful. The nobility is noted to take advantage of the constant wars on Elusia, as it fuels economy, which in turn fuels more wars. The wars against Elusia themselves are partly an extension of Brodia’s pride: aggressive expansion done in the name of “keeping a wicked nation in check” and to further Brodian way of life. Because strength is valued, the Brodian retainers are all common folk who proved themselves, sans Citrinne, who develops a complex about her strength because of it. Mining is the primary income source after warfare, something that Diamant wants to shift towards to the dismay of war benefitting nobles.
Elusia is the kingdom of knowledge, and as such, is the only nation noted to have a major place of education. The arts and the leisure seems to be highly valued here, due to an author, an artist, and a native to a hot spring centered village being recruited. Retainers, like in Brodia, are decided by strength or capability; after all, you don’t often have a Crown Princess’s servants be a former assassin and a former prince without skill and knowledge being paramount in the decision making. Hyacinth has too much love to go around, and so has a wife as well as many mistresses, and many children as a result. Knowledge begets avenues of possibility, which means one can use said knowledge to selfishly get ahead (such as the Elusian court where backstabbing and fake platitudes to appeal to the King and Queen were common place) or to benefit the world around you (Hortensia using her intellect and talent to help war victims, and Ivy utilizing Elusia’s creativity and innovative practices to better the public’s wellbeing). Seeking knowledge, however, can entrench one in dark practices, which is why the worship of the Fell Dragon went from notable to beligerent and dangerous.
Solm values freedom, and is notable for being a strict matriarchy. Only women take the throne, Merrin’s village is only ran by women, and Panette and Pandreo’s family church was headed by their mother. While open minded and easy going on the surface, Solm having its own elite vigilante group and having spies throughout the continent means that the queendom takes measures to ensure freedom very seriously; these actions are similar to Firene, which is brought up in Celine and Fogado’s support, and the two themselves are indicative of each of their nations cultures. Unlike the other nations, there’s no strict basis for who becomes a retainer, since you have a chef, a priest, and two runaways. The people of Solm live their lives how they want, and its culture is more open to entertainment and large gatherings than other nations.
And this is just what I whipped together from memory. I’ve no doubt that there’s tons of other minute details that, when pieced together, form more descriptions of the nations as a whole. This, to me, is on part with how the GBA games and Echoes built their worlds. Very solid in depth readings, with surface level broad strokes to entice the player in should they choose to put more hours into learning the ins and outs. And that isn’t even getting into the artistic directions of each nation and the characters (like outfits, seasonal representations, food/ingredients, etc.). Hell, the entirety of Elyos is shaped like a ring for crying out loud! It’s screaming “yeah the rings are this central to this world, enjoy your stay.”
I like that. Engage knows what it is and what it wants to present. No more, no less.
