Yeah. My theory that I never found academic support for but that I think fits nicely is that English lost its gender system when it violently merged with Old French (thanks to William the Conqueror).

Why at that point? Cause what followed was Middle English and it suddenly no longer had gender. How would it have happened? Simple. Middle English is basically a creole… yeah. I didn’t make that one up, saw people claiming it and honestly the amount of vocabulary borrowed does kinda track. That would mean that shortly after Normal nobles were placed around the country, a pidgin started to emerge to allow communication between a Germanic language and a technically Latin language but with two Germanic superstrata (Frankish for Old French and then Old Norse for the Vikings who settled Normandy). This pidgin, like all pidgins, had to massively simplify grammar. And the new grammar that emerged was standardised. But the clashing genders just couldn’t coexist and just disappeared (I mean seriously often you get genders that don’t match between Old English and French/Old French — take the example of the Sun and the Moon, which are sometimes still referred to as she and he in modern English, and indeed, like in German, were respectively feminine and masculine — French has it the other way around).

It’s just a silly little idea I had a while back with not a lot of concrete evidence backing it up but I like to think of it as an explanation to why English lost the gender on nouns.

i love it actually when nonnative speakers make mistakes that reveal how their native languages work.

lots of koreans online say they "eat" drinks which would assume they only have one word which covers the concept of consumption.

arabic immigrants in sweden (my mother included) have a hard time differentiating between "i think/i believe/my opinion is" which suggests that in arabic these different modalities of speaker agency is treated as one or at least interchangeable.

swedish speakers in english will use should/shall/have to/must with much higher nuance precision than native english speakers, to the point where they sound well awkward, because the distinction between these commands in swedish is much clearer than in english. i make mistakes between is/am/are and has/have constantly because swedish only has one pronoun covering all grammatical persons.

i've heard speakers of languages without gendered pronouns (finnish, the chinese dialects, and a tonne more) make he/she mistakes because it's hard(!!) to learn two or more gendered pronouns and when to use them correctly.

how neat is that?! it add a charm to international english usage in particular and make our appreciation of both our native languages and our learnt ones stronger...!!
