Hello! I just got two baby Red-Eared Sliders. Their habitat before I bought them was pretty horrible. Do you have any advice you could give me about how to care for them (esp. how to get them to eat)? Thank you!

Though they may be very small now, turtles can grow to marvelous sizes, so they will need a very large tank. Fred’s tanks have generally been near sunlight, but not in direct sunlight (usually a window facing north).

Naturally, the tank should be deep enough for them to swim about comfortably, but there should also have an artificial shore of sorts, somewhere that the turtles can climb up onto and bask in sunlight. Before Fred had her current tank, she lived in a plastic storage container and her “shore” was a large, smooth rock. Before that, it was a tupperware box turned upside-down.

Be careful if you use gravel, though—turtles sometimes swallow gravel, and that may cause internal damage, so you should make sure the gravel is too large to swallow. 

As for eating… The brand we feed Fred is ReptoMin. Red-eared sliders can be picky eaters; some days they will eat ravenously, and other days they won’t touch a single pellet. 

As for how often the water needs to be changed, that depends on the filter you’re using. If it becomes too murky to see your turtles, that’s probably a sign that the water needs changing.

Fred is actually the only one of five baby turtles still alive—the others died before I was born. Only my brother, Fred’s original owner, can tell about Fred’s early years. He used to feed Fred bits of freshly chopped vegetables, though.

Answer to superpsychgeek's answer, but under a read more because I'm not giving up on getting my friends to watch Grimm and don't want spoilers to discourage them.

You’re not intruding at all. I agree with you that both Rose and Monroe are naturally wild, but their zen kinda freaks me out. I’m always happy when they develop the main characters more. Grimm introduces new characters all the time, and then tosses them out. Because of that, I think it’s especially important to give the main characters well-rounded personalities. Nick and Juliette’s sitaution is weird. I really have no idea how to respond to it. ^_^ Thank you for following me! I always love to have new friends that I have awesome stuff in common with!

Covering the not-Grimm stuff first: I was convinced by the pretty dresses at first <3 but we do have many fandoms in common! Though by now, I have enough Whovians on my dash that I won't need to ever watch an episode of Dr Who xp

1. I think Monroe and Rosalee's zen is a good contrast to Nick's state of constant discovery, with bonus freaked-out Hank. I hope Hank won't become as zen though, because that would be too many relaxed people for a world filled with things like zombie-hedgehogs people.

4. I really wish one of them would take an initiative right now. And given that Juliette is doing her best and feeling so bad about something she has no control over, I really really want Nick to suggest they start over. He knows it's not medical, it's magical, so there's nothing to do except believing in their love and starting the relationship from scratch. (pun unintended) The way it is going... I don't know what the writers intents are. Do they make Nick stand there and do nothing but look sad (he does it well though) to show that he's not only a super-cop and a super-Grimm but also human? Or do they intend to turn Juliette into something else, an antagonist perhaps? (I'm getting strong vibes for this possibility and I don't think I like it too much...)

5. Hank makes the Scooby-gang more complete o/

6. Nooo! I like "Wu almost dies in every episode" as a running gag xp As long as he doesn't really die. I would NOT be ok with that. (Btw I was a bit yelling at my screen "You're SO NOT killing Rosalee, show!" earlier >.> )

You are absolutely cool. You are also awesome, amazing, wonderful, and groovy.

You're very sweet, and mistaken. I'm 27 and already like a weird grandma, talking to herself, not up to date with the trends and the technology, forgetting everyday more of what used to make her a cultured person. I used to tell people "I don't go out much" but I always had to precise later that no, not much meant less than they thought, so now I just go for "I don't go out". My main accomplishment from the last 2 years is having a balcony.

Don't get me wrong, I'm mostly ok with myself, and my main issue with this is that I kind of feel like the asshole rejecting people because they're different from me (seriously the Amazu in Kuragehime are so rude to Kuranosuke just because he's "cool"!). I'm just definitely not "cool" and it itches when someone seems to expect me to be ^^"

But I like groovy. I can be a groovy grandma! =D
