iâm going to be honest, the whole ârubyâs mom was only special because we gave her significanceâ was bit too wishy washy for me. i feel like it really didnât answer anything about the blatantly supernatural aspects of ruby. almost felt moffat-like where in trying to outsmart the audience it just ends up unfulfilling.

I really loved Series 14, but i'm gonna put on my constructive criticism glasses for moment because it is fun.
Looking back at the series 14 story arcs from a doylist perspective, I feel that RTD struggled to connect the two main recurring storylines this season.
I'm ignoring possible future continuations of Ruby's story and just taking this Series at face value, with the things we know now.
In one storyline, we have the return of Sutekh, the Pantheon and the Harbingers (like the Susan Triads). In the other, we have the mystery of Ruby's bio mom and the mysterious things happening around her, like the snow, the goblins and 73 yards.
The only connections that these two threads have is supernatural elements (which is a theme this entire season), and Sutekh taking interest in Ruby's mystery, which probably caused the strange events around her.
Sure, this explaination works on some levels: It connects Ruby's story to the threat in the season finale and subverts our expectations of Ruby herself being connected to the supernatural.
But there is very little thematic connections between those two. Ruby's storyline is not really about death. Sutekh has very little to do with family or adoption.
The Doctor is confronted with both of these themes, but again, only seperately. Him killing Sutekh is not thematically connected to his adoption storyline or his friendship with Ruby.
My best guess would be that these two storylines were written seperately and only connected in the end. It feels like this Season's Sutekh arc could've happened with a different companion. (For example, I saw some people asking why Sutekh wouldn't be interested in Clara's mystery arc too).
Other RTD finales have been much more connected to the companions' story: For example, Donna's fate in the Series 4 finale is directly connected to her struggles with self worth and her character growth.
It feels like a missed opportunity to not do something similar for Ruby's character arc.
#My personal opinion: I think the Season finale would be stronger if they either used a villain or god with a different theme than Sutekh#or made Ruby's origin story more supernatural.#uh oh i accidentally wrote half an essay about a silly dw season finale#doctor who meta#doctor who#doctor who spoilers#doctor who analysis#dw meta#criticism#empire of death#dw series 14#cyan.html

â· currently at S14 E16 "Don't Go in the Woods"
HOW TERRIBLE IT WAS THE MICHAEL ARC RESOLUTION??? SO UNDERWHELMING ew
On other news, I'm really appreciating how there's a return of the og horror elements in this season (also because what else there is to appreciate really đ), although is it just me or the opening scenes before the title card are getting longer??? Are they trying to soft-launch other actors or smth????????
â· regarding E15 "Peace of Mind"
VERY NICE AMBIENCE, the whole episode made me think of The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas (by Ursula K. Le Guin) and Pleasantville (1998) and I loved it for this exact reason although the explanation/resolution was kinda lame ngl.
Bonus: Sastiel episode!!! and Sam as "Justin" was absolutely hilarious (and maybe I screamed a little when it took Dean's name to make him break out of mind control, just a little đ€)

Question (because i'm curious and because i love enabling friends' hyperfixation): what is Tengu no Daidokoro? Why do you like it? What are you hoping for in a s2?
Also, should i watch it?
I adore Koisenu Futari and i have other similar queer-people-in-their-daily-life Japanese shows on my watch list (i loved my dining table and i have Kinou nani Tabeta and Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna waiting) that i just know i will love once i have the time to watch it!
Is Tengu no Daidokoro anything like it?
Thank you so much for this ask cause it gives me the opportunity to share my love for this show and also maybe make other people want to check it out.
Before anything else. This is not a queer show. All those shows you mentioned are some of my favourite shows, as you can see by my choice of pfp I adore Koisenu Futari as well. Kinou Nani Tabeta and Tsukutabe are magic and I really hope you get to them because they are so amazing. But Tengu is not that. It's an absolute gem and I adore it.
Now. Why do I love it? Why I am excited like it's christmas morning and I still believe in santa? So many reasons...
-IT'S GORGEOUS (if I hadn't binged this ,I would've giffed every frame)
I mean the greens are just incredible. All the colours in these show are actually. The change in the colours is amazing as well. My delusional brain will believe that this second season was made specifically so that me and @colourme-feral could once again lose our minds over THE GREENS.
-It's about two brothers. (I love stories around family)
Motoi (older brother played by Komagine Kiita) and On. A city 14 year old who comes to stay at his older brother's house in a rural area. They are estranged and have little in common. On is the perfect representation of 'kids these days...' (I know I'm getting old when this is what comes to mind), completely hates the idea of being away from the city and technology and internet (I related). Motoi is at home here, he's very quiet and calm. I love them. I love this relationship. I love how it grows and I can't wait to see where they go next.
-The food. (I love food)
Motoi has his own vegetable garden and he makes everything from there or other local sources. Just like the shows you mentioned in your ask, the food is a major ingredient to this story. It's the thing that brings these brothers together as well. the scene in the above gif is one of my favourites because of that. Not gonna give you spoilers.
-The dog. but also...
this is where the show takes a different turn than you'd expect. although not really because it's in the synopses, but if you only knew this show from gifs and this post you would not see this one coming. There's a supernatural element to this show. For starters that cute dog you see there, he talks. He's a talking dog!!! And he is delightful. but also this
(Can we just stop for a second and appreciate how beautiful Kiita is? I barely recognized him in 25 ji.) So yeah it's in the show's name, Tengu's Kitchen. Tengu's are a legendary creature from japanese folklore and the brothers are descendants of them. (more info here about that if you're curious).
-The three of them.
I adore them. I don't want to say more so you'll just have to watch it.
-the setting (did I mention it's gorgeous?)
I know I've mentioned the visuals but it's not just that. it's the scenery and the rhythm and the music (I love the ost of this show) and the everything. Look I watch shows for a bunch of different reasons. This one, I watch it, or rewatch it as the case may be, for my soul. It's beautiful, it's soothing, it's touching, and I feel better after watching it. I really can't explain it any other way.
There are more things I could say honestly but this is already so much longer than I intended. But it's 10 episodes of 30 minutes and as with a lot of jdramas, an incredible human @aoinousagi has fansubbed it for our viewing plesure. here is the link to their post.
These are just some of the reasons I love it and can't wait to watch more. I never expected it but this day is better because of that announcement alone. I'm so happy. I will do rewatch soon, and probaly gif more of it so maybe more people will want to check it out.
@yannig thank you so much for this question. Sorry if it's a bit of a incoherent mess but I'm really excited and having trouble putting it into words. And I know there are a lot of shows to watch and not enough time to watch them all, so of course no pressure, but if you're ever in the mood for something that is wholesome and beautiful I do recommend it highly.

It's been brilliant marathoning Supernatural. That wasn't even physically possible when I first put the show on my 'to Watch' list and made the decision to avoid spoilers. I can currently access seasons 1-14 on ITVX, and all of it on Amazon Prime Video, which is something I take for granted far too easily. I still have actual stressy dreams about scrabbling around trying to collect and preserve shows on VHS, back when things aired once (if at all in the UK) then vanished.
I can say this for sure - watching this show air in real time would have driven me absolutely potty. Week to week, never mind season to season. Which may explain some of the fandom's wilder antics!
So, I'm a little way into season 13 now. The first few eps are emotionally brutal, with Dean basically falling apart at having lost so much during a single battle that he begs God - Chuck - for respite, praying, and turns inward when Chuck (to nobody's surprise) does nothing. I think I could've watched a whole season of Dean in that state of mind, with Sam trying to juggle that strain on their relationship, his own unsupported grief, and his nervous attempt to mentor Jack. But Dean's perked up because Castiel is back, by the efficent and simple ploy of having Cas irritate the boss of the celestial afterlife so much that it threw him back in disgust so it could get some sleep. Love it. (Is that the thingy that finally gets him in the end?)
I usually focus on characters, relationships, and performances as a viewer - that's my passion, after all. But some eps of Supernatural go above and beyond on the production side, especially the direction. Amanda Tapping brought her deep understanding of the sci-fantasy genre to her s12 ep (her first as director?) and Richard Speight Jr has done elegant wonders with some tricky material. The eps directed by Jensen Ackles highlight those particular passions of mine, characterisation-rich and full of heart. Speight's 12x12 Stuck in the Middle (With You) was so elaborately scripted that it could've been a hot mess in the wrong hands, but his direction delivered it pinpoint sharp and unsparing. I don't often smile at the direction alone, or even consciously notice it until I ponder the ep after the fact, but he practically had me punching the air while I watched. Impressive!
Next up is 13x07. Getting towards the sharp end!
ETA: Belated honourable mention for going with an ENTIRE SEASON of Dick gags that one time.

Walker's Series Finale Was An Emotional End Of An Era For Jared Padalecki, And I'm Bummed All Over Again
Spoiler alert for the last-ever episode of Walker on The CW.
Walker has officially come to an end in the 2024 TV schedule after four seasons on The CW, fortunately without any massive cliffhangers beyond what would have happened with James Van Der Beek. It was a pretty happy and hopeful ending, with Walker surrounded by loved ones as they celebrated Auggie's graduation. The family (including Geri) even headed off on a vacation at the end, with one of Cordell's final lines packing a punch: "Yeah, I'm ready." Jared Padalecki may not have been as ready, and the final credits rolling on Walker marked the end of an era for the actor... and had me flashing back to what bummed me out about the Supernatural finale years ago.
Why Walker's Finale Was The End Of An Era
While the finale was the end of the Walker era for everybody involved with the show, this was a much bigger deal for Jared Padalecki, and not just because he was both star and executive producer on the drama. This show's finale marks the first time that the actor ended one show on this network without having a new starring gig on The CW lined up next. He had a key role on Gilmore Girls (which he reprised in 2017 for Netflix subscribers with the A Year in the Life miniseries) from 2000-2005, followed by Supernatural from 2005-2020, then followed by Walker from 2021-2024.
This is the first time that he's not set for another WB/CW project, and even though he pitched a way to return to playing Sam Winchester, fans shouldn't count on him coming back on the network. The end of Walker is the end of a professional era that lasted Padalecki nearly a quarter century.
Why Walker Was A Blast To The Supernatural Past
For all that Supernatural ended after fifteen seasons with Dean getting an anticlimactic death and Sam eventually dying as well, I've always leaned more towards Sam and Dean getting a happy ending rather than an unhappy one out of the 2020 series finale. At the very least, we got two versions of "Carry On Wayward Son" in the episode, and what Supernatural fan doesn't love that song?
And one would think that Supernatural would have a more satisfying finale than Walker, since the whole team knew before Season 14 even finished that Season 15 was the end, and the final two episodes were actually delayed in filming due to the COVID-19 pandemic production shutdowns. The Walker team had already finished filming the episode as a Season 4 finale rather than series finale when the cancellation happened. Supernatural had more than a year to plan the ending, but Walker's ended on a happier note.
