i know beggers can't be choosers but like. im disabled and cannot physically go to the grocery store myself. i rely on delivery to get groceries. every time i get produce they always give me the stuff that's like a day at best from being trashed. wilted slimy lettuce, green potatoes. I feel like I deserve better than that. I worked in a supermarket, the online department at mine was anal about having the freshest produce for delivery, no expiry dates within 3 days. why is this supermarket different? why do I get stuck with near-useless produce?

Crisps / Chips again
Associated with this post, here's an artefact, two anecdotes and an opinion.
The artefact is a slightly dented but still remarkably airtight "Charles Chips" tin.
It was bought, full, many years ago from the Vermont Country Store, from whom we subsequently bought reflll packs - given their size, "sacks" would be more accurate - which were shipped to Ireland in sturdy cardboard boxes.
VCS no longer carry Charles Chips in either tin or refill. I know. I checked. BUT...
The Charles Chips company, which per Wikipedia was doing just fine in 1990 then got sold and went bankrupt twice in less than three years (gosh!) is Back In Business, and note has been taken, with considerable interest - oh, you bet - that they do international shipping...
*****
Anecdote No. 1 is from when @dduane lived in Bala Cynwyd near Philadelphia, in what was known as "The House of Dangerously Single Women" (ahem). She tells me that the household used to get Charles Chips delivered to the door about twice a week, by the company's own vans.
Speaking as a long-time crisp fan, I found that both very neat and a source of mild envy. :->
Anecdote No. 2 is from 30-ish years ago, when we were in New York for something or other and, being rather jetlagged with our internal food clocks out of whack, did our usual thing and went out for a walk.
Curiously enough, this involved visiting several food stores and supermarkets where we bought a lot of Interesting Foreign or Much Missed (i.e. American, in both instances) junk food for grazing on back in our hotel room.
In one of them DD was about to lay claim to a huge bag of Wise potato chips (its bag would have been the design in the middle)...
...while nattering to one of the shop staff how much she missed them. He told her that a new delivery was expected in about 20 minutes and if she wanted to wait, she'd get much fresher chips.
And So It Came To Pass.
Well done, that guy!
*****
Finally, while Saratoga Springs may have been where potato crisps / chips were popularised, standardised, commercialised or whatever, it's definitely not where they were invented.
Even the oft-repeated "creation myth" frequently has its hard-to-please celebrity demanding to have his potatoes sliced and fried really thin "The Way I Had Them In France" - which kinda sorta suggests they were, um, being made there just like that well before the Saratoga thing happened.
Myths are okay, even marketing myths - so long as they're recognised as myths and not shilled as true by places with reputations like the Smithsonian.
*****
It's a bit like the still-current nonsense about spices being used in medieval kitchens to disguise bad meat. As far as I've been able to find out, this originated with a historian called J. C. Drummond in the late 1930s - yup, just before World War Two - simply because he didn't know his period terminology.
"Green" meant fresh - even nowadays, an inexperienced or immature person is "green" - so green cheese was newly made, and green meat was newly slaughtered, unaged and consequently tough and flavourless.
Just ask any steak fan the difference between a fresh steak and a 30-day dry aged one.
Drummond, in his overspecialised-scholarship wisdom, assumed that "green venison" meant meat which had gone off, and that a recipe to improve it with spices was to cover the bad smell and taste.
In fact it was somewhere between a marinade and a rub, meant to improve the tenderness and flavour of fresh meat as if it had aged for a while, thus shortening the waiting time between killing a beast and getting it to the table of a hungry court.
As I've said before, it's always easier for no-proofs-given pop history to dismiss medieval people as (insert derogatory observation here) than take the time needed to explain why and how they in their time were not that different to us in ours.
*****
PS: when looking for that previously posted stuff about green meat I found a post where, with even less evidence than Saratoga Springs inventing crisps, a Brit poster claimed Brits invented curry.
Snrk.
Among other more or less pertinent observations, I mentioned that what Brits invented was BRITISH curry, and anyone who has read "Nanny Ogg's Cookbook" will know what I meant by that... :->

My Problematic Girl - Ch 9 | S.R
Character: College!Steve Rogers x Rich!Female Reader
Prologue: Steve has lived being nobody in this prestigious university. He just wants to graduate and get a job to get more money to pay the bills for his mother's surgery. But his life turned upside down when a new student attended his class. His quiet and dull life became dangerous and full of surprises.
×××
She exhaled the cigarette smoke from her lips. She still doesn’t care even though he told her he has asthma.
She looked at Steve and said, “Bark for me.”
Steve felt humiliated, and his pride was crushed. But she held his life and secrets. He had to bury his dignity to the ground, and he murmured,
“Woof.”

“You’re not joking.” Y/N was surprised to see Steve come here the next morning carrying his stuff. She didn’t consider him serious about joining her revenge on Solomon.
“You will stay in that room.” She put her reading glass on the documents and brought him to the guest room.
Steve looked around the guest room. There’s a bed, desk, mirror and wardrobe. He wanted to put his outfit inside the wardrobe, but he saw inside there already someone else outfit; for a glance, he could tell it was a male outfit.
Y/N notices Steve's curiosity since he is stuck looking at the clothes. “It belongs to my friend who sometimes sleeps here if he has a hangover. You can throw it if you want.”
‘She has a friend?’
He was surprised when he heard Y/N had a friend. Probably, he has the same personality as her.
After he had arranged his stuff, Steve opened the fridge to put the food he had brought from his place. He was surprised by what he had seen. He’s poor but will try to buy various groceries like meat, vegetables, and instant food. But inside her fridge, there are a dozen boxes of chocolate milk, and who put a box of mac and cheese in the fridge, and there’s nothing in the freezer.
“This is your food?”
Y/N picked one of the boxes “It already has calcium and vitamins. It’s enough for me.” Besides, Y/N doesn’t know how to cook and only orders a delivery, or Tony will send food to her.
Steve shook his head. “I will go to the supermarket.”
Y/N took a $300 bill from her wallet and put it on the table counter near Steve's “Here.”
Once again, she gave him too much money. But this time, he will spend all of it. After she gave the money, she went back to reading a document.
“What are you doing?”
“Reading my client's request.” She answered without looking at him.
“Oh right, you’re a lawyer, the one who does money laundering.” Steve replied sarcastically.
Y/N chuckled. “You’ll be surprised it’s not just me who does this.”
Steve furrowed his eyebrows and asked, “What kind of lawyer who does money laundering?”
Y/N put a finger on her lips. “Cunning is necessary for this business.”
“Y/N you probably will be the only weirdest lawyer I ever knew.”
She giggled without feeling offended. “Glad to be the only one.”
Steve went back after he bought the groceries. This is the first time he enjoyed shopping without caring about money. After that, he returned to Y/N's apartment and started to cook dinner.
Y/N wasn’t keen on Steve's idea, “Just order a delivery.”
Steve was cutting the carrots with a knife on the chopping board. The knife he currently uses is of high quality, different from what he had. He wants to use the kitchen applicants in this apartment.
He waved the knife in his hand. “You just got a seizure; you need to eat homemade food. This time, listen to me; I’m holding a knife here.”
At Steve’s threat, Y/N scoffed, “That was the kindest threat that I ever had from someone holding a knife.”
Satisfied with her answer, he continued cooking while Y/N continued her reading.
After a while, Steve finished cooking. He put the chicken soup and garlic butter salmon on the table.
Before he called Y/N, she was already standing looking at the food. For her, it looks weird seeing someone cooking in the kitchen. Before her parents divorced, only her mother enjoyed cooking. Sometimes, she regretted not asking her mother to teach her about cooking. At least she could learn her mother's recipe.
Y/N doesn’t want anyone to touch the kitchen, but seeing Steve looking excited, she doesn’t want to kill his joy.
Both of them eat the food together. There was silence, but it wasn’t awkward. Because they enjoy it, Steve was impressed with the food he made today, and Y/N, it’s been a long time since she ate a simple home-cooked meal that gave her warmth.
When she stayed at Solomon, she couldn’t eat at all; it seemed like she got a stomachache every day. It is caused by stress. Since then, it’s easier for Y/N to drink milk than eating any foods.
Y/N put down the food utensils. “Thank you for the food.”
Still eating, Steve widened his eyes; he didn’t expect her to say thanks. “No worries. Thank you for letting me use the kitchen.”
Y/N hummed. She carried her plates to the sink and washed them. “I forgot to mention, you could use the kitchen, TV, and the space if you want to paint.”
Steve stared at her. Is it his illusion? Did he just see her being kind to him?
Steve was watching the TV in the living room. He wasn’t interested at first, but he always wanted to know how it felt like to watch a football game on 75-inch TV. When he turned it on, it was marvellous. His eyes were glued to it.
While watching, he smelled perfume from behind; he turned around and saw Y/N wearing a dress for a party. But why she’s carrying a gym bag? It doesn’t go well together.
“I'm going out tonight, don’t wait for me.”
“Where are you going? Don’t forget not to drink any alcohol.”
Y/n rolled her eyes. She closed the door and left. She is always like this, being secretive.
*******
At night, Steve was awake by a sound. It’s not loud, but the sound keeps repeating. He couldn’t recall the sounds, but he felt familiar.
Does it mean Y/N has come back?
He opened the door and saw Y/N sitting in the living room, her hands counting money. The sound he heard was from the money-counter machine. And the gym bag is beside her, but now there’s a lot of money inside the bag.
He rubbed his eyes. Is he dreaming or what?
Y/N felt someone was watching her. She lifted her head, and there he was, her new housemate. He looks dumbfounded, like a lost rabbit who enters the wolf’s den.
“What’s that?”
Y/N stared at Steve expressionlessly. It made him uncomfortable. Is this a borderline he couldn't cross? He should’ve stayed asleep and ignored her.
But then suddenly, Y/N called out his name, “Stevie. You’re really cute as shit.”
Steve was dumbfounded; in which part he’s cute?
Y/N tapped the stack of money on the table. “In front of you is what $500,000 in cash looks like.”
"Bank still opens at night?"
She chuckled while counting the money. "Don't be silly, I got this from gambling."
Her tone was playful, but he didn’t find this funny at all. Steve crossed his arms. When he thought she was good, the next thing she did always shocked him. He wondered if staying with her would be fine for his heart.
"Y/N, you play a dangerous game."
Y/N nodded, agreeing with what he said. She stops counting and looks at him, “You see, Steve. There's something wrong with me. I don't feel scared, guilt, lust and love. I love the adrenaline of taking a big risk.”
“I could see that.”
“You remembered my ex?”
The only man who made her uncomfortable was Brock Rumlow. Steve nodded.
“When we were together, I didn’t feel anything. And I think Brock knew that’s why he got another woman.”
Y/N liked being with Brock, but she noticed she didn’t feel any lust for him. She doesn’t want to kiss him or sleep with him. She tried using porn, a smut novel and even went to a strip club, but she doesn’t feel any lust.
She went to the doctor and learned she was diagnosed with impotence or female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The doctor knew Y/N's history, and she told her that her childhood trauma caused this.
Yeah, no shit.
“But I felt something when I saw your drawing, even though it's just a brief moment.”
Steve felt embarrassed when she mentioned the adult comic he made. Since he got paid, he didn’t continue the story. But what she said next made him want to dig the ground and hide.
“From the website, only your work triggered my lust.”
Y/N didn’t understand the reason why. She went to the doctor again and learned about Stendhal’s syndrome is a collection of intense physical and mental symptoms people may experience while or after viewing a work of art.
How lucky she was when she found out the comic creator was sitting beside her at Starks University.
Steve hides his red face with his hands. “Don't you feel any shame talking about this?”
She shrugged her shoulder. “Like I said before, I don't feel anything. I'm not embarrassed.”
“That's why you don't feel guilty for blackmailing me.”
Y/N smiled broadly. “You seem like the easy type to be bullied.”
Thank you for reading. I hope you like it.

Delivery
When João doesn’t show up for work, Abel is a bit worried. As much as the other may complain (in private and away from the workplace) how much disdain he holds for the office and their colleagues, if João is not in, there are limited reasons for it. It feels a bit odd that he checks his phone and sees no message, so he drops João a text himself—a snappy, Are you OK?—and then, because he must, he continues with his work.
It is in the early afternoon that he receives a reply to his text that tells him just as plainly, in bed, bit sniffly, and while he is of course then worried, at least he has an answer. After he sends João his well wishes, it means he can properly focus on his work, right up until he shuts down his computer at five o’clock on the dot.
On his way home from work, Abel decides to make a detour.
Or, rather, a few detours.
The first place he stops by is the supermarket. There are some things he needs to buy and with a list in hand, he is able to whizz around the shop in about ten minutes flat (well, that is, before having to face the crowds around the tills). By the time he gets back to his car, it is nearing twenty-to-six.
His next stop is his own home. There’s just one thing he wants to grab from the airing cupboard upstairs, which he can then take with him to his next stop.
By now, it is six. Luckily for him, his next stop was not too far away.
With a single big (reusable!) shopping bag in hand, Abel leaves his car in the communal car park and heads off in the direction of João’s apartment.
When he goes to knock on the other’s front door, he feels bad, knowing that he might wake him, or otherwise is forcing him to walk to the door as a minimum. As his fist hovers in front of the wood, he debates it—he debates turning around, going home, surrendering—but then he thinks about João, ill, buried in a pile of tissues, probably hungry and cold… and he knows it could be a small price to pay to make him feel better.
So, he knocks. He knocks and he waits, not brave enough to look directly at the door in case it suddenly flies open and he’s met with an upset (or annoyed) João.
He waits for about half a minute, before he finds himself debating, once more, maybe I should go. He finds his feet moving before he can make any kind of counterargument. And then—
“Abel…?”
He halts. He feels stuck like a deer in headlights, fingers clutching the handles of his bag tight. He feels guilty—he feels so incredibly guilty—and he gingerly turns, to find João standing just outside his front door, drowning in layers of clothing and his nose quite red. Guilt anchors its roots only deeper.
“What are you doing here?” João asks him in the face of silence.
“I… wanted to check on you,” Abel says hesitantly. “Sorry if I’ve disturbed you…”
João, however, shakes his head. “You haven’t disturbed me,” he assures Abel. “You can come in, if you want. Have a hot drink with me? Tea? Coffee?”
“Are you sure?”
“Would I ask if I wasn’t?”
Upon receiving a smile from the other, Abel resigns. He still feels bad. But if this allows him to make sure João really is well and looking after himself, then—
“What’s in the bag?”
Abel glanced at João, then down to the bag in his hand and the items inside—the honey, the lemons, the ginger, the tissues, the sweets, the small bunch of cheerful daffodils, some simple dinner products, the extra-thick blanket he’d brought from home. His face begins to warm, and quite rapidly.
“I, um…” He takes a breath. “I brought you some things.”
“Things?” João says, his smile growing on one side. “I like ‘things’.”
“Ah— It’s nothing special,” Abel feels a need to emphasise all the same.
Yet João tells him, “You came to see me, make sure I’m okay. That’s special enough for me.”
Face well and truly warm, Abel slowly finds himself easing. João once more prompts him to go inside the apartment with him, and this time, there is no pause, no hesitation,
Over the next two hours, they have that hot drink. Abel makes João a quick dinner to help him save his energy (though João insists on supervising the cooking), and they end up settling together under that nice thick blanket as João puts a film on at Abel’s suggestion.
“Are you sure you want to stay? I don’t want you to get ill too,” the brunet says as he settles down with a box of tissues in his lap, a Dutchman at his side.
“Would I be here,” Abel returns, “if I wasn’t sure?”
João tuts and grumbles. Abel apologises, and excuses himself to go and maybe make a fresh drink before the film starts, but then the other grabs his hand and stops him before he can get up.
“Please… Stay…” João asks of him. “Stay with me…”
And how could Abel deny him? If it will make him feel better, then it is the least he can do.

Five Hours Or Less
People have laughed at Jeff Bezos for about as long as he has been in business with Amazon. When he launched Prime in 2005, people scoffed about why we might need something in two days. When he started talking about drones in 2013, people laughed even harder, and some people threatened to shoot them down from the sky.
Prime is still with us and going strong, and drones are starting to take off. But not everything can be carried by them, necessitating ground transportation, which Amazon also wants to happen faster and faster. Remember last week when we discussed Target’s sortation facilities to facilitate faster order fulfillment? Now Amazon has responded by increasing its sub-same-day delivery (SSD) to include 100,000 items. The goal is to never let more than five hours elapse between order placement, order picking, and order delivery, all within a 60-minute radius of a distribution center.
Not bad, once you factor in urban traffic, because SSD is only going to happen—for now, at least—in the nation’s largest cities. Think one million and up.
Amazon already has in place, or is planning to build, special smaller order fulfillment centers that only handle SSD orders. The sprawling million or more square feet DCs we see in industrial sectors along freeways and near airports will remain, but for all of the other things that Amazon sells. Basically, the new smaller warehouses will almost be like a convenience store equivalent.
Of course, there are some issues, like whether extra charges may be incurred by customers. After all, getting something delivered in a few hours comes at a price for the company. Walmart has already made such promises with its Walmart+ option. And then there is the thorny issue that many of the workers making this all happen are actually in the gig economy. This means they are not employees of the online vendor, and thus do not receive benefits. Individual states could weigh in on this in a crushing kind of way. I’m looking at you, California, as is everyone else, because you’ve already made noises about doing so.
I am most interested in the product selection that will comprise the 100,000 SKU assortment. It will have to be those items that are most frequently purchased, and typically with a current—and sometimes pressing—need. But these items are typically on the lower end of the price spectrum, and therefore don’t leave a whole lot of room for hefty margins. Volume could make up for that, but you have to actually get that volume first.
As for those gig workers, they will likely be driving personal vehicles instead of shiny new Amazon EV delivery vans. I’ve seen them before. They have a magnetic sign on their door, and they zoom around suburbia as fast as possible, because their paycheck is dependent upon their own ability to maintain delivery volume.
Then we have to think about a society that has become so busy and/or enamored of rapid delivery of everything. Are we really that busy? Or lazy, as some might say? Maybe I have it too good, with a Walmart and a United Supermarket both within a couple of minutes of my parking space. That’s pretty convenient for me, and I get what I want right now. Of course, it may mean I have to delay my workout by 15-30 minutes that day, but so be it.
And never mind that I will never be able to take advantage of SSD anyway, because of living outside a major urban area. Sorry, Amarillo and Canyon peeps: this will never happen here. You’ll have to move to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, or Houston. And I suspect you would appreciate it greatly, because you won’t have to venture out into the never-ending traffic.
Now that I think about it, I’m rather happy that I don’t need SSD. I’ve got pretty much everything I need at my fingertips. Anything else can wait two days, just like I have been doing since Prime was introduced.
And don’t worry about drones out here on the High Plains. The way the wind was blowing two days ago makes that kind of thing a losing proposition.
I think we’d all be having the last laugh on Mr. Bezos.
I mean, unless he could harness an 80mph wind to his advantage.

A meditation on fruitcake:
Back in the 1960s, when my age was still in the single digits, my mother baked several fruitcake loaves each October or November; in December, she gave them to our neighbors and other people we knew. She seemed to feel that baking and eating fruitcake was a rather daring thing to do. She later explained to me that she knew nothing about fruitcake — it had never even crossed her path, apparently — until her first marriage.
My mother’s first husband wasn’t Jewish. He was brought up as a Seventh-Day Adventist — the son of missionaries in Africa, in fact. (I really must tell the story of my mother’s first marriage in this space some time. Tumblr needs me to do so, in fact. People will be shocked, but it’ll be a salutary, edifying shock.) By the time he and my mother were married, his parents were retired and living in Nebraska. My mother was at that point a life-long New Yorker. Imagine the exoticism of Nebraska! When he and my mother went to visit them, apparently sometime one autumn, his mother was baking her annual batch of fruitcakes. My mother was quite fascinated by this. Her mother-in-law gave her a recipe.
The point, of course, is that for my mother, fruitcake was in some way not Jewish. She had a point: fruitcake = Christmas. Consider, though, what I found in the October 7th, 1943, issue of The Sentinel, a Jewish weekly published here in Chicago:
Davidson's never had a store in my part of town, but they did make regular deliveries to Mr. G.'s, a supermarket near me. The bakery went out of business about 40 years ago. I can't remember whether it was kosher (I tend to think not; here’s a photo of the branch at 1617 West Howard Street, and as you can see there’s no sign in the window indicating that that it is), but the company did see fit to take out a half-page display ad promoting fruitcake as a Hanukkah gift. It does travel well over long distances, to be sure, and I’m betting that the illustration at the top came from stock (look at those sprigs of holly!), so it’s possible that the company was simply taking advantage of the opportunity to push an unfamiliar product. But they seem to be banking on the idea that it won’t seem outlandish. Maybe it wasn’t that unfamiliar, after all.
We know, of course, what many people think about fruitcake. But I’m here to tell you that I enjoy a good fruitcake very much. (Admittedly, there’s a lot of bad fruitcake out there.) Whether you operate a self-service laundromat or a full-service laundry company, knowing how to promote your laundry business effectively can make all the difference. Below are some actionable ideas to boost your visibility and grow your clientele.
1. Create a Strong Online Presence
Your customers are online, and your business should be too. Build a professional website with clear information about your services, pricing, and contact details. Use keywords like "laundry services near me" to optimize your website for local searches.
Additionally, register your business on Google My Business. This ensures your business appears on Google Maps and local search results, increasing your chances of attracting nearby customers.
2. Engage on Social Media
Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook can help you connect with your audience. Post regular updates, laundry tips, and promotions. Show before-and-after shots of clean laundry to highlight your expertise. You can also run social media ads targeting local areas to reach potential customers.
3. Offer Convenience with Pick-Up and Delivery Services
Busy customers value convenience. Introduce pick-up and delivery options to differentiate your business. Promote this feature through local advertisements, your website, and social media channels.
4. Use Local Advertising
Traditional advertising methods, such as flyers, posters, and local radio spots, remain effective. Place ads in nearby supermarkets, apartment complexes, and gyms. Highlight any special offers, such as discounts for first-time customers or bulk laundry deals.
5. Build Partnerships
Collaborate with local businesses like hotels, gyms, or hostels that may need regular laundry services. Offer them exclusive packages to secure a steady flow of business.
6. Launch Loyalty Programs
Reward loyal customers with discounts, free washes, or cashback offers. A simple loyalty card system can encourage repeat visits and increase customer satisfaction.
7. Host Community Events or Promotions
Get involved in your local community by sponsoring events or hosting free laundry days for a cause. This creates goodwill and promotes your services to a larger audience.
8. Focus on Exceptional Customer Service
Satisfied customers are your best promoters. Ensure you provide quick turnaround times, high-quality cleaning, and friendly service. Encourage happy customers to leave positive reviews online.
9. Leverage Referral Programs
Word-of-mouth marketing is powerful. Introduce referral programs where existing customers can earn discounts or rewards by bringing in new clients.
