Soloveiko Songbirds and Pysanka Eggs in Liverpool for Eurovision 2023

There are 12 Soloveiko Songbirds representing different Ukrainian regions placed around Liverpool at the moment! They play music as you come up on them, and some have a button you can press as well to hear more. Click here for more info; these are all my own photos (I managed not to get many people in the photos because I got here earlier that most other fans attending ESC, but trust me, there are very popular!)

Inside the Liverpool One shopping centre, there are beautiful Pysanka Eggs as well!

Also several iconic Superlambananas are also painted as Ukrainian flags!

The whole city is decked out in ESC 2023 branding, and loads of flag bunting! The Eurovision Village has a whole dedicated area to the Ukrainian culture called Discover Ukraine, and Kalush Orchestra’s ESC winning outfits are in the British Music Experience museum! (more on that in a different post 😉)

Superlambanana, Tithebarn Street, Liverpool.

The original Superlambbanana was created by New York artist Taro Chiezo. In it’s original form it was only four inches tall. The giant version known to the people of Liverpool was created by Andy Small, Julian Taylor, Tommy Reason, and Ray Stokes.

It is intended as a comment on the effects of genetic engineering and has become as recognisable symbol of the city as the Liver Bird and the Radio City Tower.

WEEK 3 TUTORIAL: DESIGN OBJECT

In last weeks class we were told to find an object that has an interesting design. We were pretty restricted to finding something within our own homes because of the current pandemic situation, but I have this sculpture in my bedroom that I’ve always loved. It’s called a ‘Lambanana’ or ‘Super-Lambanana’ and I got it when I was in Liverpool, England a couple years ago. I think I love it because it’s so pointless and its sole purpose is to add some creativity to the city of Liverpool. I looked into it and the whole concept of the sculpture started because the city of Liverpool wanted a staple landmark or image that attracts tourists to their city, so they hired Japanese artist Taro Chiezo to come up with this lamb/ banana hybrid thing. Now there’s loads of these scattered across the city, with all different types of designs painted on them. They are quite polarising in Liverpool, people either love them or hate them. The best part about all this is that they aren’t even really a tourist attraction nowadays, not many people outside of Liverpool know what they are, so the city council kind of failed in that regard. They are just THERE, which I find so funny. From a design point of view, I think they are visually really cool! I love the smooth, seamless curves that make up the shape of the ‘lamb’, and I especially like the yellow version of the sculpture (which I bought in a small size) because it helps to convey that banana looking tail the figure has.
