Is it raining where you are? We’re starting to get more of them these days thank fuck, but the weather is still mostly humid and has none of the cold air that the rain comes with. But I’m happy with it anyway because it’s my favorite weather, and it feels nice and refreshing to finally have cloudy days. Would you ever get a white phone? When I was in high school I wanted a white iPhone so bad since that was the really popular color for phones back then hahaha (teenagers will turn everything into a trend, I now realize. Urgh). But because my parents always bought me new phones as a surprise, it meant that I didn’t really get a say about what color I wanted. It’s okay though, I wasn’t at all desperate for a white phone and definitely not spoiled rotten that I’d lash out at them. What was the last board game you played? It’s got to be whatever Elis brought to Skywalk before he graduated, as he liked bringing new board games for us almost everyday. One of the last ones I tried to join was Secret Hitler, but I backed out halfway through the session because I could never follow the instructions for most board games lol. What color is the floor in the room you're in? White. What color do you see the most of right now? White because our walls and floor are white, but with a strong tinge of yellow since we have yellow lights in the dining area and living room.
Are you more hungry or thirsty right now? I’m neither. Dinner tonight was so good so I had a big serving for myself and I also just finished a cup of coffee, so I’m feeling full at the moment. Have you wasted any money lately? I don’t even have any to spend these days hahahaha so nope How about lost any money? Also nope. As disorganized as I can be sometimes, I fortunately haven’t lost money. The one time I did was because someone stole my wallet altogether. What's your favorite kind of tea? I was never a tea person. Artificial sugary iced tea is enough for me. Would you rather go back to the 80's and 90's for a week? Probably the 80s so that it’s vastly different. I was able to live through some remnants of the 90s, so I prefer an entirely new experience. If you could only wear one color of socks ever, what would you choose? Just a plain color, no design? I’d go with mustard yellow I guess. It’s a cute color. What color hairties do you normally use? Black. Brown is an absolute last resort and only for situations where there aren’t any black ones anywhere. I’m super picky with my hair ties lol Do you prefer mints or gum? Gum. Sometimes it can be comforting to chew on something; it makes me feel preoccupied. Have you been sleeping well lately? Yes. My body clock is absolutely fucked, but I sleep very well and uninterrupted, thankfully. I used to wake up at the smallest noise, so I’m glad this quarantine taught me otherwise. Popsicles or fudgeicles? I had no idea what the latter is so I looked it up and...aren’t those popsicles too, just chocolate? :/ Anyway, I do like chocolate popsicles more than any other flavor. When was the last time you made a sandwich? Yesterday. What's your favorite thing for a person to do while you're kissing them? Smiling. Or biting my lip. HAHAHA I can go either way of the spectrum. Blush or bronzer? In the handful of times that my friends served as make-up artists for my face, I loved how bronzer looked on me. I’d always ask for it whenever they work on me.
Is it more important to you to have your fingernails or toenails painted? Neither is important to me. Would you rather your sheets be red or green? Eugh neither, but if I had to pick I’d go with red. Green is my least favorite color, and the only time I like it is when it’s an eye color lmao. Have you bought any bracelets recently? I have not bought anything lately, period. Including bracelets. What was the last reason you bought or recieved a card? A week before the lockdown, a guest speaker in my community press class gave me his business card. He wanted to take a photo with our class after his talk and I volunteered my phone, so he gave me his card so I could send the photos to him. How do you normally wear your hair? These days, ponytail for sure. Do you use a belt normally? It’s never a part of my outfits, no. What do you put on your hot dogs? Not really a common meal to snack on here so I haven’t had the chance to experiment and figure out what toppings I’d like on mine. How about on your tacos? I don’t really like tacos. Do you like watermelon? Nope. What is your favorite flavor of hot pockets? I don’t think we have Hot Pockets here. Maybe the fancier groceries do? but I really don’t know for sure. They look really good though and I’m often thinking about wanting to try them. The Totino’s(???) pizza rolls are also something I’ve heard about and I’m super envious cause they sound like heaven??? What color is your favorite blanket? Pink. What day of the week is it? It isssssss Thursday. I’m not even aware of the days anymore; I had to check my laptop’s clock to answer this. What's the most adventurous thing you've done this week? Stayed up till 4 AM? Lol ughhhhhhh give me my life back plz Would you prefer a brick house or a log cabin? Brick house. Patio or porch? Oooooh I would love a patio. Pool or trampoline? Pool. Trampolines are fun for like, five minutes lol. When was the last time you had orange juice? I don’t know if it counts as juice but my dad recently started buying those fizzy Berocca tablets that turn water into some type of vitamin drink when you dump it in. I hated it from the first sip, and thankfully my parents never forced me to take it after that. Do you like apple juice? Meh, it’s fine. I don’t like juices in general but apple is still one of the flavors I’d drink if it was available or offered to me. Do you have any bright colored shorts? Yes, a couple. Leggings or yoga pants? Leggings but only because I’ve never owned a pair of yoga pants. Do you like b.l.t.s? I don’t hate them, but I don’t get them a lot either. They’re just there to me lol. What was the last drink you ordered at a restaurant? I only ever go for water; it’s never been my habit to order a drink because they make me feel full quicker. Have you went to a Burger King or McDonald's more recently? Wow, neither. But my parents love Burger King more, so it was likely that that was one of the last places they bought takeout from before the lockdown. Do you remember your last dream? I don’t think so, nope. Do you like going for car rides? I do and I definitely miss them more now. Do you have a tree in your yard? No we don’t. When was the last time you lit a candle? Never. I hate using lighters and I always ask someone else to light up something meant to be lit up for me.

Fueling the Immune System for Faster, Deeper Healing From Cancer
The Body
Diet and Nutrition: Let’s start by looking at the role your diet plays in immune health. Studies point to over 30% of all cancers now being directly related to diet. You have all heard about free radicals – they are bad! Under normal circumstances, they are naturally produced and destroyed by the body’s usual functions. However excessive amounts of free radicals may exist due to exposure to carcinogens, various toxins, radiation and improper digestion. Among other things, free radicals damage immune cells and interfere with internal communication. Antioxidants are the solution for blocking free radicals. There is a lot of research now regarding the great healing power of many foods that produce antioxidant effects in the body. A few stand out as super performers and should be included in your diet on a regular, if not daily basis. This is the list of the top performers from the book Foods that Fight Cancer by Dr. Richard BĂ©liveau; brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, onine, spinach, watercress, flax seeds, tomato paste (and cooked tomatoes), turmeric, black pepper, fresh berries (blue, black and raspberries), dried cranberries, grapes, dark chocolate (70% cacao) citrus fruit juice, foods containing high levels of omega 3, green tea and red wine. The ones that have the biggest impact on the immune system are; turmeric (it is even more powerful when combined with black pepper), citrus fruits and omega 3 concentrated foods (fatty fish, fish oils, olive oil, hemp seeds, walnuts). For more detailed information of the impact of food on cancer cells I would highly recommend reading Dr. BĂ©liveau’s book.
Two Key Vitamins: Immune health is also influenced by certain vitamins. Vitamin C helps build the immune response as does vitamin D. Vitamin C is needed for the formation of certain hormones, for the production of lymphocytes (white blood cells), and to protect the body against bacteria and viruses. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant. It is water-soluble so your body is not able to store it in adequate quantities in the body. This is why it is important to ensure adequate daily intake. Six servings of fruits and vegetables per day is likely sufficient. On days when you feel you are not getting enough in your diet or if you are feeling run down you can take vitamin C supplements. Try not to consume refined sugar at the same time as your vitamin C supplement (for example the fizzy Vitamin C tablets). Vitamin C and sugar have a similar chemical structure so the two compete to enter the cells. When there is lots of sugar, less vitamin C will be absorbed and your system simply flushes it out.
Vitamin D is a powerful antimicrobial agent – in other words it helps kills various bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also helps with the absorption of calcium and has been proven effective against several forms of cancer. The best way to get vitamin D is through exposure to sun. Try to go outside without sunscreen for at least 10 minutes per day, ideally 20 minutes. In the winter, when the sun is not as strong (especially in the northern regions) supplements will likely be necessary. Liquid vitamin D is the best source and most easily absorbed. Remember sunscreens block out vitamin D and sunglasses also limit its absorption.
The Importance of Good Bacteria: Eighty percent of the immune activity takes place in the intestines where good bacteria fights off foreign invaders and infections. Chemotherapy drugs, often kill off good bacteria so it is important to ensure you have a good source of probiotics in your diet. Yogurt companies are going crazy with claims of billions per gram but you must ensure that the bacteria is live in order to it to be effective. I suggest a probiotic supplement be taken on a daily basis. Check at your local health store for a good brand that has two strands of bacteria and at least 10 billion live bacteria. You will find them in the refrigerator section as they are live cultures.
Walk Every Day: Research is now showing a link between moderate, regular exercise and a strong immune response. Exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, is good for stimulating the production of bone marrow. Bone marrow is the source of all immune cells for the body. As you exert weight on the long bones of your body it helps keep your bones strong and stimulates production of the bone marrow to fuel immune cell production. Choose an activity that you love to do; walk, jog or dance. Then find someone that you enjoy doing it with – a friend, your dog or do it on your own and make it your time to focus on your body and empty your mind!
If you are just too tired to exercise, try just walking around the block everyday, maybe twice a day. Then increase the number of times around the block as your energy builds and your stamina increases. There may be days when even this is too much. On those days, simply honour the messages from your body, without being hard on yourself, and give your body the love and rest it needs.
The Emotional Angle
Attitude Does Matter! Now let’s look briefly at the emotional side of the immune building story. Research has shown that immune response is affected by emotions. Simply put, you can think of the immune system – its strength and vitality – as a reflection of your emotional state. Everyone has heard stories of people dying after their loved ones pass away, otherwise known as dying of a broken heart. Well it may be more accurate to say they died of a ‘depressed’ immune system. Studies have shown the link between specific negative emotions and the immune response. The most detrimental emotions are feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, like feeling trapped or stuck, with no control over the outcome of events. The next article in this series will address the emotional side of healing in more detail but in summary the more hope, the more joy, the more love and laughter you can bring into your life during your healing journey the more you are encouraging and stimulating your immune system.
The Spiritual Aspect
The Healing Power of Meditation: I started meditating about 15 years ago. The first and most impressive benefit I experienced was the boost in my immune system that the meditation facilitated through the deep rest it provides. I went from having back to back colds to feeling healthy and almost never getting sick. Over the years, I also noticed that when I did get an occasional cold, it do not knock me out. I experienced only minor symptoms and they passed quickly.
So if there is one thing I would recommend you add to your daily routine is two sessions of 10 to 20 minutes of silence. If quietening your mind sounds like an insurmountable challenge, then I suggest you find a good guided meditation. On my website I have a 15 minute immune booster guided relaxation and imagery session that you can listen to free of charge. The imagery (visualizing and stimulating the other senses) part of the session is also very beneficial as you are literally sending and reinforcing powerful messages to your body. To see how quickly the body responds to our thoughts you just have to think about watching a scary movie – as your fear increases so does your heart rate and your palms automatically start to sweat. Similarly, as you imagine your immune cells being mobilized, your body is automatically receiving and acting on the message.
The Importance of True Relaxation: The other important thing to understand is that when we exercise, either the mind or the body, we are stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. Even when we relax or de-stress it is often while doing things that continue to stimulate us like having a glass of wine, watching TV or exercising – again exciting the sympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the nervous system that is like the gas pedal in a car. Because of our busy lifestyles, the sympathetic system is usually over stimulated and an internal imbalance is created. The parasympathetic nervous system on the other hand is stimulated when we are resting, quiet or relaxed and is usually under stimulated or neglected. Think of it as a muscle, if it does not get used enough it will get weak and won’t be as responsive. A daily meditation or relaxation practice (even if you start with just 5 minutes) allows you to strengthen your parasympathetic system and stimulate your immune or relaxation response. This stimulation helps creates more balance and a stronger immune response.

Nutritional PSA: Cravings!
I’ve seen a lot of people, both on here, and on other sites struggling with cravings, and I know I do a lot of the time too, so, here’s a list of things you’re craving and what to eat instead of that entire pizza you really want. And I want. So much want. And because I have literally nothing to do rn, I’m waiting on a delivery that has a 12 hour slot! 12 hours! Why?
CRAVING SALT: Crisps? Pretzels? Marmite? Am I the only one who eats marmite straight out of the jar? Yeah, I thought I might be. You could have an electrolyte/mineral deficiency or possibly dehydration. Have a drink, preferably something un-caffeinated and see how you feel. Still want that salt after 20 minutes? Salted nuts, a small handful of salted crackers, or just do what I do and lick salt off your hand. Boyfriend thinks it’s nuts, but it works! If you’re doing keto, you may find you need more salt than usual, particularly if you’re just entering ketosis as you’re literally peeing out all of the minerals in your body. Get yourself a good vitamin and mineral tablet and keep drinking! Table salt is better than nothing if that’s what you want to do, but have a shop around and see which salts you can get that contain more minerals other than just sodium
CRAVING SUGAR: the craving that always gets me - sugar is pretty addictive, but it’s also pretty delicious, and even if we don’t think we’re eating that much of it, it’s still alarmingly abundant in pre-prepared foods, it’s even sprinkled on ready to eat chicken thighs! Go for fruit, it has sugar but it also has vitamins and minerals and fibre, or if fruit isn’t your thing, measure out a small portion of ice cream or chocolate and sit down and eat it, focus on it, don’t eat it in front of the TV, that’s how you accidentally eat an entire tub of Ben & Jerry’s. For ketosis, if you have an overbearing sweet craving, indulge it; find really good quality dark chocolate, the longer you’re in ketosis, the more your taste buds will change and something you previously found unpalatable may suddenly be quite sweet. Lindt do really good dark chocolate with pieces of orange and almond, or Divine do a good one with orange and ginger. Or if you need that ice cream fix, buy small tubs, they’re usually 20-25g carbs, or Ben & Jerry’s do tiny ice cream sandwiches at 21g carbs per 2 which is awesome. The cravings go after a while, but sometimes it’s nice to have a sweet treat. Just treat it as a treat, rather than a regular part of your diet.
CRAVING PASTA/BREAD: is it half past 3 in the afternoon and out of the blue you really really fancy some bread? Or pasta? Or even a packet of digestive biscuits? Could be you’re just hungry - if it happens often, have a look at what you’re eating for lunch, it may be fashionable to have a salad, or you might think you’re eating better by having low fat everything, but fat is much more filling than carbs, try changing up your lunches a bit, or take a portion of nuts or some fruit for the inevitable mid-afternoon flop. If it’s a constant craving, you might be deficient in nitrogen or chromium - eat some green leafy veg or tomatoes, grapes, apples, nuts, or if like me you hate veggies, get a good multivitamin. But really you should try and eat your veggies, they are good for you even if they taste like grass. On a more serious note, if you have overwhelming cravings for carbs and they start to have an impact on your quality of life, or you constantly find yourself overeating on them and unable to control yourself, this is a sign of depression and attempting to self-medicate to raise serotonin levels, get yourself someone to talk to; a doctor, a friend, a teacher, even your cat, someone who makes you feel safe and able to talk through your feelings without judging you.
CRAVING JUNK/FATTY FOODS: really want that burger? with cheese? extra bacon? Nothing wrong with eating fatty foods, anyone in ketosis will tell you that, but if you need fats, do it at home. Get a good quality burger from your local butcher and some good streaky bacon and your favourite cheese and do it at yourself! It may not be cheaper but it’s better for you, you’re eating good quality food and you’re not contributing to the profits of huge corporations like McDonalds and Burger King. Constantly craving junk? Have a look at what else you’re eating during the day, are you one of these bizarre people that forgets to eat? Yeah, you’re probably hungry, eat more in general, or more often, and the cravings should go away. Or if you’re currently dieting and all you want to eat is meat and cheese, maybe change the way you diet; try a ketogenic or paleo diet, the carb cravings go away after a while but I’ve never known a craving for bacon to go away.
CRAVING MEAT: this was a problem I had when I was vegetarian many years ago, I didn’t understand how food worked, didn’t really know what protein was and lived primarily on pasta and potatoes. Not the healthiest. If you’re craving meat a lot you might be low on iron, if you suspect you have anaemia, get yourself to a doctor to have a test, they’ll be able to direct you to a good course of action to get you back on track. If your iron levels are fine, you might just be lacking sufficient protein in your diet; depending on your eating style, have a couple of chicken legs, a piece of fish, some eggs, or a bean burger. Gone are the days of bland vegetarian food, there are some super amazing bean burgers out there that even carnivores are going to love!
CRAVING FIZZY DRINKS: first of all, are you thirsty? I want to write go drink some water, but tbh I never drink it and I’d feel a bit “do as I say, not what I do”, so if you like water, go drink it, if you don’t, put sugar free squash in it, or switch out your sugary drinks for diet versions, if you’re not sensitive to aspartame or whichever artificial sweetener is used in your drink of choice. Next port of questioning is is it the drink you want or the caffeine? I get through 2 cans of sugar free red bull a day, I’m pretty sure it’s not the drink I’m going for when I open that fridge, cause Lord knows there are better tasting things, but the caffeine. If you have a caffeine dependency that revolves around coke and pepsi you may not even realise you have one but both of these contain caffeine. If you’re concerned about your intake, try a caffeine free version, see how you feel. If it’s just the drink you want, you could be lacking calcium; seeds, cheese, yoghurt, canned salmon, beans and lentils, all are a good source of calcium, but remember you also need vitamin D to absorb the calcium. If you live somewhere it isn’t very sunny this time of year, or you work nights and rarely see the sun, maybe consider a vitamin D supplement, or a sun lamp, but the NHS advises not to go taking calcium supplements.
Remember everything in moderation; if you’re out and you fancy Burger King, go get some, haven’t had breakfast and you walk past a pastry shop and a croissant catches your eye, buy it. Don’t feel guilty about treating yourself, if you’ve lost 1kg or 10kg, you’re allowed a treat now and then, you can have a cheat day (well, maybe not in the same way on a keto diet) and not ruin your progress. If you trip up and accidentally eat 2,000 calories of Chinese take away (we’ve all done it), get up, dust yourself off and carry on. You’re not going to put the pounds back on just from one day’s over-indulgence.
If you’re at all concerned about your diet or cravings, or you’re feeling run down or tired all the time, do go see a doctor. There could be an underlying problem like anaemia, or a hormone imbalance, or an infection somewhere that you’ve ignored thinking it would just get better and go away. It might feel like you’re bugging them for no reason, but this is what they’re paid for, and believe me, they prefer to see you when you’ve got a cough than when you have to be rushed to A&E a few months later with a life-threatening respiratory infection.
This has been a PSA that turned out a lot longer than I thought it would! And my delivery still isn’t here!
