Congrats to Super Mario RPG fans for the Nintendo Switch remake announcement! I've never played the game myself, even though it would have been available via Wii U Virtual Console in Europe. I'm interested in trying it out on Switch, being a fan of JRPGs and having enjoyed some Paper Mario games.
I dug out pages related to the game from the books Super Famicom: The Box Art Collection and A Guide To Japanese Role-Playing Games.

Tagged Tulmbr questionaire! From @thimbledoll and @hyacinthdoll1315
3 ships / First ever ship: Hahah wow is this a tumblr question. I don't actively ship characters, so I guess this is going to be three groupings I like:
Kanaya Maryam x Rose Lalonde (Homestuck): Classic homestuck lesbians. I like this one mostly out of my love for Kanaya. She's precious blorbo and I want good things her.
Angela x Roland x Gebura (Library of Ruina): Okay hear me out. I came up with this ship just right now and its *perfect*. So, normally, this would be the classic two troubled but somewhat functional people (Angela and Roland) working out their differences, growing together, seeing the world, etc while there's an extra deadbeat hanger on (Gebura) who's just there. However, this dynamic completely switches in bed or in tense scenarios- Angela and Gebura take charge while Roland sits to side or does whatever bottoming the situation demands. Its GENIUS I tell you.
Band Polycule (Bocchi the Rock): Why not cash in the incredible dynamics they all have? Bocchi and Ryo are clearly the moneymakers/moneyhavers in this polycule, and Kita and Nijika are the functional adult types. Like, maybe *officially* they're paired off in some way. But they all live in the same duplex, have one gigantic bed, and happen to sleep with each other.
Last song: Been listening to Sleep Talk Metropolis by Mili. Really like Mili, and a lot of their songs (including this one!) brings out genuine intense emotion in me.
Last movie: The Puss in Boots: Last Wish. In all fairness, I didn't finish it (flight movie) but I love how much heart and manic energy this one has. I love Dreamworks new "cartoony/anime-esque 3D" style. Currently reading: I've been meaning to read some anarchist theory, but I currently am not. Mousewife got a record of all SNES boxart, called Super Famicom: The Box Art Collection and I've been enjoying looking through that.
Currently watching: Been watching mousewife try her hand at Suika Game. Double Watermelon is real, and I believe its possible.
Currently consuming: I ate some toast! Later I am thinking about putting together a little rice bowl with brown rice, chicken. and veggies. Currently craving: That rice bowl I am now thinking about. I would also take ramen. Honestly, I would eat many things right now, but I can't because I am going to jog soon. I'm not gonna tag people- Had a really bad experience where I did Follow Friday on Twitter and accidentally tagged two people who hated each other. Stirred up some unnecessary drama, looked like an ass, and I generally avoid tagging strangers now.

A vendor I love to buy from at anime conventions is selling a bunch of cool stuff on their eBay page. They're called Retro Saikou and they're great - a combo of old school stuff and new stuff, video games, CDs, artbooks... I've bought lots of stuff from them at 2 years of Anime Weekend Atlanta. I can't go to AWA this year, so I'm browsing their eBay, and here's some stuff y'all might want to check out! They are located right here in Georgia and they're super helpful - one time I bought a CD from them, got home, opened it up and discovered a totally different disc in there, so I emailed them and got that fixed no problem. I can't recommend them enough.
Anyway, on to the links!

014: Futrai wa Precure Max Heart! Maji? Maji!? Fight de IN Janai
CANON FIRE is made possible by the generous contributions of readers like you. Support more writing like this on Patreon. Thank you!
Footnotes are available here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/66431843
Based on the anime series of the same name, Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart does a respectable job of translating both the aesthetic and action. Importantly, it's clearly made for the same audience of young girls the anime is aiming for. There’s the same sort of pastel and pink aesthetic, with a big emphasis on cute and appealing designs, but with a more traditional action game structure.
"Games for girls'', at least here in the US, often tend to focus on more traditionally "feminine" pursuits, such as dressing up, or nurturing animals, often taking the form of puzzle or mini-game collections (1). By their action focused nature, adaptations of magical girl shows often get more chances to break out of that box (2).
Before playing this title I was only vaguely aware of the Pretty Cure series. The latest titles occasionally make some buzz around social media, and a few entries have been localized here, under the Glitter Force name, often with large changes. Watching the first Precure series (Futari wa Pretty Cure), what struck me was the weight and physicality of it. Other magical girl shows I'd seen often had an airy, fantastical style to them. Characters felt as if they could take a step right into the air, and often did. Pretty Cure emphasizes the action in a different way, with a desire to bring moves closer to real life martial arts. You can trace the momentum of characters through their exaggerated spins, and the way they shift weight for throws.(3)
Precure GBA doesn't capture the exact same sense of weight, but there's definitely nods to it in the posing and moveset of the characters. There are three playable characters, which all share a moveset outside of aesthetic flourishes. Each has a basic three hit grounded combo, an air attack that chains into a drill kick with forward momentum, and a wall jump. It's less involved than its contemporaries, even in the girl focused space, more akin to something you'd see in a licensed title like Ghost Sweeper Mikami on the Super Famicom (4).
Honestly, outside of its aesthetics, it isn't that interesting as an action game, but the aesthetics count for A LOT. The bright pastels and cute character designs make it stand out a lot, probably heightened by devs often choosing to saturate the colors even more to make up for the GBA's non-backlit screen.
The game takes place in a theme park, with each world presenting a different area of it, and each level some section or attraction in it. Levels open with battles against objects or animals possessed by Zakenna, a dark being injected by the antagonists to create monsters, culminating with a setpiece or boss fight. Along the way are hidden decorations you can find to populate each character's room in another mode, and mini-games where you control the mascot characters as you collect pickups that contribute to earning another heart point.
You'll probably want to do those bonus stages too, since this game is HARD. Despite what I said about the relative simplicity of the action, Precure is still willing to lay down punishment fast. There are no checkpoints, and you begin with only three hearts out of a max of seven, so a few mistakes and you'll lose an entire stage worth of progress.
Know the layout and avoid unnecessary fights and you can get through a stage quickly, but jump around carelessly or start a combo from a bad position and you'll be repeating levels fast. The attraction sections are probably the most frustrating part in this regard, since they often have auto scrolling sections that turn into a test of patience upon repeating them a few times.
What kept me playing was seeing all the small aesthetic touches for each new area. Enemy variety is astounding, and while they don't have a wide range of behaviors (mostly turning aggressive as you pass and chasing you) there's a lot of specifically themed enemies with their own unique animations. The slight change in costume and voice samples with each character adds a touch of variety, even if the moves stay the same (not unlike GS Mikami's palette swapped outfits per stage). The water stage even has an animation for flipping directions while swimming, which is cool even if it's slow enough to get you killed.
A serviceable licensed action game isn't much new, but there's something satisfying about seeing this show's particular aesthetics represented in one. Action games with girly aesthetics are novel in themselves, and even as Pretty Cure adds new entries to the series, action games seem underrepresented (5). Entries in other genres aren't inherently less valuable or anything, but the lack of girl targeted action games kind of speaks to publishers’ preconceptions that they can only sell games to girls within a preset range of “girly” pursuits.
Precure isn't as mechanically involved as something like a full blown brawler or character action game, but there's some small joy in seeing the anime's characters and world miniaturized for this handheld system.
Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart: Maji? Maji? Fight de IN Janai is available on Game Boy Advance.

Ganbare Goemon Production Material Museum Part 1: The Rescue of Princess Yuki
The following is a translation of the first in a series of seven commentaries from the now-defunct official Ganbare Goemon website. Each entry featured production tidbits between Etsunobu Ebisu, who was the general producer for the Goemon series at the time, and artist Madoka Yamauchi, followed by concept art related to the game.
This first entry covers the first Super Famicom game in the series, Ganbare Goemon: Yuki-hime Kyūshutsu Emaki, which also happens to be the first game that was brought over to the west as Legend of the Mystical Ninja. You can still read the original here.
Production Tidbits
Yamauchi: Greetings! I was told to introduce Yuki-hime Kyūshutsu Emaki (The Rescue of Princess Yuki) in this so-called “Goemon Production Material Museum” thing. I’m Yamauchi. Because I’m not very reliable by myself, I have with me Ebi-san, general producer of the Goemon franchise.
Ebisu: Greetings! I’m Ebisu. I’m supposed to be talking about Goemon 1 & 2 here, but can I really remember something that happened such a long time ago? I can’t even remember the dinner I had yesterday. As someone who is always living in the present, the past is pretty much non-existent for me.
Yamauchi: Oh no! I’ll be in trouble if you can’t tell me even a single thing. Is there anything you can tell us about Yuki-hime (the first Goemon game on SFC).
Ebisu: The team leader in charge of Yuki-hime was Ume-san, who previously worked on the Famicom port of Gradius II. At the time Ume-san was pretty reputed in his field, showing great skill in developing new technology, but we still struggled quite a bit though, since it was our first Super Famicom title.
Yamauchi: It seems you did quite a lot on Yuki-hime. I heard it was quite a hell of a development process.
Ebisu: We couldn’t fit everything with the capacity with were given (or it would had doubled our company’s expenses) as we were approaching the deadline. During the last six months of development, the deadline kept being pushed back to a month, so the developers repeatedly found themselves in a position where they would be crunching themselves to death until they ultimately went in with all their might and they were like “let’s do something!.”
Yamauchi: So you were using up your memory capacity until the last moment. It’s incredible that Yuki-hime has such a huge amount of content. I still can’t believe it’s only on an 8-megabit ROM cartridge. Truly the culmination of everyone’s sleepless nights, no, their efforts. Speaking of which, there used to be a radio exercise program that aired very morning at 9:00AM back then (laughs). Radio exercising in the morning after staying all night... That takes me back.
Ebisu: You sweat it all out easily, didn’t you? Oh well.
Yamauchi: Are these all the development documents we had for Yuki-hime? It’s only about three volumes of documents.
Ebisu: Nope, I only pay attention to what’s ahead of me.
Yamauchi: Please keep track of your stuff properly. It seems that these documents contain mostly just data, so they’re not something that most people will understand by simply showing it to them.
Ebisu: That’s right. It’s nothing but a collection of data. Even I don’t know what they mean.
Yamaguchi: Hmm, if we must show something to our readers, we could publish some concept art. But graphic designers back then were already drawing with pixel art tools without having to come up with some concept art first, so there isn’t that much that could be shown to the public. What should we do?
Ebisu: What about those drawings of the boss characters?
Yamaguchi: Ah, that could work! They’re a bit rough, but you could still extrapolate a lot by introducing production materials from the period.
Ebisu: Next time we’ll talk about Goemon 2 [the Super Famicom version].
Concept Art Introductions
Ghost Woman (Stage 1)
Offense: Main (N/A), Dishes (2)
Stamina: Main (6), Dishes (N/A)
Description: She materializes from a well and hovers around in a Sine curve pattern while spinning a pair of plates. She throws her plates at regular intervals. The plates will bounce back to the screen if it hits the edges of the screen during its downward trajectory. The ghost cannot be harmed by striking her body directly. You can only damage her by hitting her dishes in order to deflect them back at her. She is actually a disguise used by the Ninja Cat Kurobe, who is looking for a brave hero.
Lantern Man (Stage 2)
Stamina: Main (54) Attack (4)
Description: A mysterious demon who leads the Hyotokko Mask Gang. He carries a wooden frame on his back which is used to hang all of his paper lanterns (it is believed they will become demons too). It seems he has a single hand under his loincloth, but no one has ever seen it. He has a natural fondness for cat. In fact, it is said that he caught Koban Cat to eat it. He usually says “Of course I like cats!”
Otafuku (Stage 4)
Offense: Main body (4), Twin sumo wrestlers (4), Ball (4)
Stamina: Main body (32), Twin sumo wrestlers (8), Ball (4)
Description: When the player first enters the room, they will encounter a pair of sumo wrestlers guarding the Otafuku statue. The sumo wrestlers will attack the player with a bouncing ball they throw back and forth at each other. They can only sustain damage at their heads, so the player must use jumping attacks to damage them. When the sumo wrestlers are defeated, their souls will inhabit the Otafuku statue, causing it to expand and attack the player. The statue has three attack patterns.
Sasuke (Stage 5)
Offense: Sasuke (3) , Underling Ninja (2)
Stamina: Sasuke (16), Underling Ninja (2)
Description: The leader of a ninja gang that guard a mansion. At first he simply sends out his minions to battle the player while he rides a kite and observe the battle from the background, but after all of his minions are defeated, he flies towards the player and fights them on his kite.
Kabuki (Stage 6)
Offense: Main body (4), Tsuzura box (4) Stamina: Main body (32), Tsuzura box (16)
Description: This boss appears before the imperial palace in Kyoto in order to steal the boarding passes of any wanderer he comes by. A tsuzura box will appear from the top of the screen with a spotlight shining on it. The tsuzura box will then fold down with a Kabuki actor wearing it on his back.
Hakuryū (Stage 7)
Offense: 2
Stamina: 10
Description: A white dragon that lives in Dragon Pond. It guards the legendary White Mirror that has been passed down since ancient times. The most effective weapon against Haukuryu is the koban coin toss if you’re using a regular weapon or the bomb throw if you’re using a special weapon. Toramaru and Pekomaru are also effective too if you’re going to use a jutsu. In fact, with a jutsu he can be defeated almost immediately.
Daruma Otoshi (Stage 8)
Offense: Head (4), Parts (4)
Stamina: Head (6), Parts (N/A)
Description: A sub-boss that appears in Stage 8. At first it consists of five pieces and a head that are vertically aligned atop each other and they move from one side of the screen to the other from the bottom part to the head on the top. When all the parts and the head have been moved to one side, they will moves back again to the other side. You can hit the lower parts from the side or jump on them, but they cannot be destroyed. Only the head can be destroyed by damaging it. Once the first head has been destroyed, the second part on top will become the new head. When all the other heads have been destroyed, the last one will escape and the floor will collapse, allowing the player to move on to the next area.
Yajirobe Daruma (Stage 8)
Offense: 4
Stamina: N/A
Description: The remaining head of the Otoshi Daruma from the previous battle will combine with a Yajirobee [a Japanese balancing toy] to form the boss of Stage 8. It places Princess Yuki on top of a cauldron as it awaits the player to rescue her. When the player jumps onto the cauldron, the lid will open and the boss will appear. Its durability is not particularly great and it can be defeated by jumping into the baton that is riding it. Since the lid that the player rides moves in an irregular pace , the player must use jumping attacks or projectiles to damage the Daruma head. You will sustain great damage if you get hit with one of the two iron balls it is attached with, so be careful when it starts to shake too much. Timing your attacks is crucial.
Warrior & Lion (Stage 9)
Offense: Lion (4), Warrior (4)
Stamina: Lion (32), Warrior (33)
Description: The lion is actually the transformed shape of Gonta the magic user. The lion can repel any of the player’s attacks and the only way it can be damaged is by hitting the arrows shot by the warrior riding it to repel it back. While the arrows can strike any part of the lion’s body, it usually uses its forelegs to repel them when they fly under its head. While the lion does not have an attack of its own, as it simply moves back and forth, the warrior riding it will usually shoot two arrows at the same time at regular intervals. The warrior cannot be damaged while he’s riding the lion. Once the lion has been defeated, Gonta’s spell is broken and the warrior (actually a robot) will fight the player on foot. The robot warrior will attack the player with a rolling attack.

Soundtrack Update
Tomorrow will bring another batch of soundtracks going onto eBay, for which I will make a post when they go up. For those of you looking to keep convenient track of these, here is a link to my seller page so you can see all of whatever I have up at any given time. The first batch of CDs still has a little over 4 days to go!
Some of you have asked questions. Questions are good! They show that I’m more interesting than annoying, mostly.
Do these soundtracks contain spinecards (obi)? Most of them do. Some may have been acquired without them or I may have misplaced them in the very early days of my collecting. If this is a deal-breaker, ask about any CD you need to.
Can you combine shipping? You sure can. I’ll be more than happy to send multiple CDs and charge only the total amount of shipping.
Is there a full list of all the soundtracks that will be auctioned? There is now. I have painstakingly written down the names of each of the soundtracks to be auctioned, 238 in total. It was a little less than I thought; some of them took up large space on the shelves and skewed my calculations. For the sake of your dashboard, the full list is under the cut.

Dude I’m so fucking happy I’ve got myself a Super Famicom, just for the simple reason that collecting games is sooooooooo much easier and cheaper (to a degree).
Like my copy of Street Fighter 2 Turbo for PAL was like nearly $40, and all it got me was the cartridge and the manual, manual is in okay condition whereas the cartridge is pretty much perfect. For just under $20, I got the NTSC-J version boxed and is basically perfect.
I mean, if you really wanna talk shop, I know of a place where I can get a PAL copy of Megaman X2 for just under $400 and that’s just for the fucking cartridge alone. Yet, Rockman X2 (Megaman is originally Rockman in Japan) is like a $35 cartridge and a boxed version is a bit over $100.
Plus, there’s the added bonus of a bunch of games that didn’t leave Japan coupled with a bunch of games that didn’t make it here to Aus, let alone english speaking countries, for instance; there’s a good chunk of Dragon Ball Z games that made it over to like Germany, Spain and France and they’re pretty pricey just for the cartridge up around $100 and over for just that itself, or I could just get a boxed NTSC-J copy for a fraction of that.
ALSOOOOOOOOOOOO ONE MORE THING! The damn SFC (Super Famicom) boxes and box art are just way better than what we go. Go suss the box art differences with Super Metroid, so much nicer AND the damn linays that hold everything together are made of plastic and everything is just so much nicer. (Sidenote however, some box art just doesn’t hold up, Super Castlevania 4 is one of the exceptions that proves the rule)
SO TL;DR
Super Famicom’s are rad as fuck and I’m happy to have one.

Random trivia: due to a ROM size issue, the Famicom version of Wizardry II has been developed and released after the adaptation of Wizardry III, hence the fact that Wizardry III was rechristened Wizardry II (and Wizardry II became Wizardry III). For some reason, one of the illustrations he created for Emil Chronicle Online was reused in the card game Aquarian Age. Culdcept Revolt and Brandish: Dark Revenant also features illustrations created for previous games from their respective series. To this day, he has worked on more than 60 games.
