How I think Robotech should cap off?
Personally, the finale should be a sort of homage to Phantasm with the SDF-3 caught in a mind bending sort of black hole. It could be that the Protoculture left on the SDF-3 was affected by the cosmic event and put the crew into this dream state taking on a life of its own.
As shown with Dana, even the Flower of Life can induce a sort of hallucination.
In fact... I'd be more on brand with Robotech by adapting "SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love?" as the dream sequence for the Macross character , pissing off very protective Macross fans one last time.
Mind you, I'd have a proper release and dub for DYRL put out first.
Scott's group would try to help enter the dream world while the Haydonites are fended off, finding themselves on the SDF-1 they've heard stories about in original scenes interacting with Do You Remember Love? While the digital animation interacting with the old school cell animation would be jarring, this would add to the not-too-stable state of the dream and how the characters from Southern Cross as well as Mospeada aren’t really mean to be there.
The dream becomes destabilized when Roy dies, reminding Rick and others what really happened. Soon Ben dies, Max falls for Miriya and Lisa remembers her love for Rick. Additionally, certain voice actors who either died or retired are recasted (with some VAs from the ADV dub of Macross like Monica Rial playing Lisa Hayes).
Minmei would secretly be the stronger mind trying to give everybody what she thinks they want but what she really wants: an escape from reality. It would be an extension of her downer ending of a story arc from the Macross Saga. The Protoculture feeds off her desires for better days before the Zentraedi Holocaust or what she went through in “Prelude To The Shadow Chronicles.”
However, everyone finds each other and realizes the ruse. Dana and survivors of the Southern Cross were exposed to the Flower of Life’s spores, giving them some chance of navigating the dream space.
This leads to Minmei’s space concert where she rallies everyone against the dream's defenses, represented by the Zentraedi and the Meltaedi. The song? An English localization of “Do You Remember Love?” as a tribute to the original Macross.
Minmei, at the center of it all, has to learn to sing and let everybody trapped fight their way out. I'd be a good way of her truly moving forward after The Sentinals pilot showed that her feelings for Rick hadn't truly gone away.
Meta wise: it could be how the main storyline has been long overdue for some closure. Even one about nostalgia and how denying the here and now only feeds into higher powers who wish to oppress you.
It would end on the concert she performs in Macross Flashback 2012, this time with shots of surviving characters from each saga. Maybe have Bowie on piano with Lancer on base.
Right... feel free to tear me apart for suggesting such an affront to a classic Anime movie.
...
It’d be better than “Love, Live, Alive.”

Could you explain the harmony gold situation in full? I only know it from the transformers angle with the original jetfire toy.
It’s not too long a story. As you may already know, Harmony Gold wanted to broadcast Macross in the US, but Macross is actually quite a short series and there weren’t enough episodes for it to get approved for broadcast on American TV. To resolve this issue, they took footage from Macross and two other series, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada, and frankensteined the footage together to create Robotech. They bought the rights for all three series from Tatsunoko, who sole them exclusive and perpetual international rights for all three series.
The thing is, technically they weren’t allowed to do that for Macross, because they’re not the sole owner of the IP. The other IP holder is a company called Big West, who produced all the Macross sequels by themselves. Big West were understandably pissed - I know Shoji Kawamori, Macross’ creator, has even referred to Robotech as a “pirate” version of Macross when he’s been asked about it, so they were probably very reluctant to deal with Harmony Gold to get their stuff published. Even if it was a patchwork hatchet job, Robotech went on to be extremely popular in the US, which enabled them to basically squat on the Macross IP in the US and internationally for many years even after the Robotech brand became increasingly irrelevant with the lack of new entries and Macross continued going on strong in Japan. Now, the full details and background behind this new deal are secret, so it’s not entirely clear who’s caved in or who’s getting the better of this deal, but like I say, this opens up a lot of avenues that should be good for the brand with official releases of 4 full length TV series and bunch of movies, OVAs and videogames now possible. In terms of popularity in Japan, Macross is way up there, behind only the likes of Gundam and EVA, and while I doubt they can achieve that level of success internationally now, this deal should still create a lot of profit for everyone involved, which can only be good for the future of the IP.

I grew up in the 80s, so my first exposure to anime (by which my child-self means Cartoons That Are Not Like Other Cartoons) was through Voltron: Defender of the Universe (originally Beast King Go-Lion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV in Japan) and Robotech (originally Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada).  I loved these shows, and would watch them whenever I could.  Lucky for me, they were in syndication pretty much through the 80s and into the 90s.
My first exposure to anime when I was aware that it was made in Japan was not until I was a freshman in college in the 90s.  I got together with a bunch of freshman & upper class guys (the ratio at my school was averaging about 6 guys to 1 girl; it was a tech school) and watched an undubbed, unsubbed, almost certainly pirated video tape of Urotsukidoji (or, as my erstwhile boyfriend called it, Demons, Sex, & Basketball, because those were the only things we could recognize).  Thank you Space Station Studios for selling those nifty purple tapes.
After that lovely experience, my first “real” anime exposure was probably either Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo!, or the oavs for Vampire Princess Miyu at the AnimeFest that my school’s Science Fiction Society put on.  The first anime I recall buying for myself was probably The Vision of Escaflowne.  I loved that show SO MUCH; I would save up money to splurge on one of the VHS tapes when they were available at our local comic store, in satisfyingly heavy plastic cases - I eventually gave them away to an older lady at my work, because I had sucked her into reading manga and watching anime, but by then I had bought dvds.
Maybe it’s because I’ve gotten old and crotchety, but none of the new anime that’s coming out or available now seems as interesting to me as the old stuff. (Though the fact that brick and mortar stores don’t carry a lot of anime anymore is probably part of that.  I prefer to have the dvd in my hand and examine it rather than buying “sight unseen” from some online store.  See “old and crotchety” above.)  When I realized that Battle of the Planets was originally an anime, I bought up the dvds for Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman... and Gatchaman will be 50 years old this year.  While I was aware of Gundam Wing in the late 90s and 2000s when it was really popular, I never watched it.  I actually watched the original series Mobile Suit Gundam and Char’s Counterattack and that vintage long, long before I watched Gundam Wing.  The latest anime I own is probably Full Metal Alchemist... and while I like it a lot, I mainly got into it because of a friend.
Death Note who?
Everyone’s starter anime is death note.
I don’t count sailor moon or dbz cuz you watched those as a kid and assumed they were cartoons.
I mean when you got “into” anime fully aware of what it was and actually became immmmmmersed in this bizarre weeb culture.
It’s usually death note.

// Sinopsis //

// Impresiones //
Tumblr media Tumblr media
// Conclusión //

Top 10 mecha anime?
Thank you for the ask!I’ve included links to series openings or good scenes when possible.
10. Chōdenji Machine Voltes V [超電磁マシーン ボルテスV] Voltes V is the stronger of the “Robot Romance” trilogy and several concepts and themes later made their way into Golion (and thus Voltron). It’s a straight-forward super robot/combining mecha show with sentai theming and obligatory 80s ruined earth setting that later punches you in the face with a tragic antagonist/protagonist backstory reveal. VLD Keith owes a lot to his Voltes V counterpart, Ken'ichi Gō, and I don’t even think it was intentional, it just spilled out by virtue of genre tropes.
9. Space Runaway Ideon [伝説巨神イデオン] (TV/Movies)Japanese OP here. Don’t let the upbeat opening song fool you. This is Yoshiyuki “Death Count” Tomino at his best. More mind fuckery than Evangelion (which was influenced by Ideon). I love the character designs, the Ideon combiner, the concept, and that’s all I’m going to say about it.
8.Adventure! Iczer 3 [冒険!イクサー3] from the Iczer OVA seriesJapanese OP here. Not the best mecha anime, the Iczer-verse OVAs are more of a cross-genre of body horror, mecha, magical girl (arguably), and yuri. The series (beginning with Fight! Iczer One) introduced tentacle horror ahead of Urotsukidōji and—even though I’m an Ace—I will never turn down mecha-piloting lesbian space elves. What can I say, the 80s were weird. The mecha designs were really cool and influenced later series like Evangelion and Dangaioh.
7. Aim for the Top! OVAsJapanese OP here.Incredible character and mecha design. Ambitious mecha concepts. Soviets. OMG moments. Jupiter!? Break out the tissues because [spoiler spoiler] space physics [spoiler spoiler].
6. Aoki Ryūsei SPT Layzner  [蒼き流星SPTレイズナー]Japanese OP 1 here.I have a soft-spot for hybrid alien protagonists, Cold War settings, AI ethics, and Painfully Obvious Anti-War Themes. Layzner is a great “real robot” action series with touches of survival thriller pacing, that left its mark on later mecha shows like Evangelion and MS Gundam 00. See also obligatory 80s ruined Earth scenario + late series weirdness. Alas, Layzner is very much dated in the gender role department and it runs afoul of one of the worst (IMO) tropes in storytelling in the very first episode. Breaks my heart b/c so much of the series is fantastic. The Skull-Gunners are Aliens-level creepy.
5. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross [超時空要塞マクロス] / Robotech: Macross SagaJapanese OP here.I’ll use the Robotech names here, b/c that’s a little easier for me.
Macross is the one mecha anime that—while I think that the SDF-1 and the 3-way transforming Valkyries/Veritechs are hella cool—I love it for the ambitious inclusion of relationship storylines rather than the mecha. Which says a lot b/c I’m ship agnostic and usually prefer not to see romantic storylines outside of rom-coms or romance-specific genres. Macross gives storylines for 3 couples: one is the quintessential love triangle, the second is the first time I ever saw a biracial couple in animation (OTP: Claudia and Roy), and the third is the absurdly-rushed-yet-compelling battle couple Miriya and Max. Claudia is one of my favorite anime characters b/c Reasons.
What does this have to do with mecha? Absolutely nothing but somehow Macross made it work while launching a franchise known just as much for its moe idol singers as its mecha.
Additionally, Macross (and Robotech) influences can be seen in many series (Japanese or Western), and the Roy Fokker easter egg in the first episode of Voltron Legendary Defender was my clue that I was going to love VLD (I also suspect that Rick, Miriya, and Max were snuck in as well). LM name-dropping Robotech as having influenced the way they wrote the conflict in VLD continuing beyond Zarkon’s death confirmed my hunch that there are other Robotech influences in VLD as well.
4. Beast King Golion [百獣王ゴライオン] / Voltron: Defender of the Universe (franchise as a whole)Probably not fair to combine Golion with Voltron, but I will anyway. I love Golion and the Voltron franchise for different reasons, but overall the super sentai team concept is stronger in Golion/Voltron than in other super robot/combining mecha shows, which when combined with the lion design and space-fantasy theming makes them stand out.
3. Armored Fleet Dairugger XV [機甲艦隊ダイラガーXV]  / Vehicle VoltronCombining mecha meets Star Trek. Ambitious with its 15 member team—“I’m a foot!”—and political themes. The original has quite the body count, so the Voltron DotU version is hella sanitized with dialogue like: “Set your stun guns to maximum stun!” or “We’ll come back for him later!” LOL okay Dorma (Sirik).
It’s hard to get characterization with so many characters, but, unlike a lot of other shows, there are 4 regularly occurring female characters with speaking lines and I never felt like they were terribly slighted in the gender role department. No damsels in distress here.
2. Genesis Climber MOSPEADA [機甲創世記モスピーダ ] / Robotech: The New GenerationWhile definitely a feather-weight of the real robot mecha genre, the Cyclones are a fun take on transforming mecha/real robot battle armor. Once again, obligatory 80s ruined earth setting. Also, I’ll take all the androgynous gender bending that I can get b/c—this one’s personal—as a tomboy child in the 80s (we didn’t have access to words/concepts like gender fluid back then), Yellow Dancer was a huge deal for me and still is.Clip of Yellow Dancer spoiler scene but I don’t care.Bonus: “Look Up The Sky Is Falling” holds up surprisingly well for an 80s cartoon song about environmental destruction.
1. Mobile Suit Gundam [機動戦士ガンダム] franchise (Universal Century preferred). This is a cop-out, but I love all Gundam UC timeline series for different reasons and it’s impossible for me to pick which one is “the best”. There’s a reason the franchise is still going strong after all these years, and his name is Char Aznable, the Red Comet, Yoshiyuki Tomino (even when he’s not involved, his initial concept was so strong that it lives on without him).Clip of Char in Zaku II from MS Gundam Origins here.
Runners-up: Six God Combination Godmars, Shin Getter Robo, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, Super Dimension Century Orguss, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Vision of Escaflowne, Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy Metal L-Gaim, and Knights of Sidonia.

Robotech - Transformation (Vol. 2) This early anime series that helped introduce the genre to the United States in the mid-1980s is a curious hybrid. Harmony Gold bought the rights to the 36-episode Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, in which an alien invasion was held at bay by the voice of a girl pop star, but executives felt that American viewers wouldn't accept that plot. Producer-story editor Carl Macek intercut sequences from Macross with two similar-looking sci-fi series from Tatsunoko Studios, Genesis Climber Mospeada and Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, creating a sprawling 85-episode space opera with a completely new story line. This second collection of episodes from the Macross adventure continues the very tame romance between Rick and Minmei alongside the war waged by the human crew of the gargantuan space ship SDF-1 against the alien Zentraedi. Complications ensue when Minmei wins the title of "Miss Macross" and becomes a shipboard celebrity. Rick is promoted to lieutenant and put in charge of training corporals Ben and Max. All three pilots and Lisa Hayes are captured by the Zentraedi, who have somehow lost the secret of biological reproduction, but believe the knowledge is hidden within the SDF-1. For its legions of loyal fans, Robotech is a landmark in animation history with potent nostalgic ties. Younger fans seeing Robotech for the first time may be surprised at the leisurely pacing, tame action sequences, and sloppy execution--Rick's hair often changes color from scene to scene. Contains these episodes: 7. "Bye Bye Mars," 8. "Sweet Sixteen," 9. "Miss Macross," 10. "Blind Game," 11. "First Contact," 12. "The Big Escape." Unrated; "contains mild animated violence." Suitable for ages 8 and up: violence is restricted to spaceship and robot battles.  Tap the link to sign up and get up to $30 off. https://item.mercari.com/gl/m20267654687/ #wellnessjames #Entrepreneurs #Jamesthehealthycoffeeguy my Passion http://jameslockettrepairs.blogspot.com https://www.instagram.com/p/CMhl3HqDYpo/?igshid=116a29yn5f4wj

Theatrical poster for the limited US release of Robotech the movie, July 1986. A much maligned film, but rarely seen by it's detractors, this film is a rather scrambled edit of Megazone 23 and coupled with edits of footage of various episodes of Southern Cross. Despite claims the film was a box office bomb, in it's test market run in Dallas, Texas, it did exceptionally well despite it's run being limited to daytime matinee screenings in most theatres. However, financial issues plagued it's distributor Cannon Films. Cannon also did not understand the core market of the franchise. When teens and young adults showed up to screenings rather than children (which they expected the film to appeal to and had already bought TV commercial airtime during children's TV shows to market to), they panicked and pulled the film from distribution. Due to internal issues, the film was never remarketed or retooled for wider distribution. It was eventually released on home video in English in the UK and Belgium (with Dutch subtitles) and on laserdisc in English in the Netherlands, again with Dutch subtitles.

Robotech is like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in terms of rotating protagonists.
Of course, that’s natural with how it was three separate Anime brought together into a generational storyline but I like that Dana Sterling was written as the grown up version of Max and Miriya’s daughter from the Macross saga. Bowie was even made into Claudia’s nephew.
I feel like this could’ve carried on more into the New Generation and have Scott Bernard be written as Rick Hunter’s son like with Dana.

#robotech #videojuegos #anime #movie #retro #protocultura #retroact #macross #retroactBlue

Some fan art from the first issue of that fanzine in which my work got published.  As you can tell, the anime that bacame part of Robotech (Macross and Southern Cross) were what really spurred me into this, not even six years prior.
