It is possible that batteries might move electricity in space as well as time. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that there are 2.6TW of generation and storage capacity queuing up for grid connections in America -- enough to double the country's installed generating capacity. This queue contains a full terawatt of solar power. SunTrain, in which Dr Carlson's firm, Planetary Technologies, is an investor, sees this as a market for batteries with wheels.

The company plans to use solar farms in places that have little to recommend them other than a railway line nearby as filling stations at which to charge heavy but cheap batteries built into goods wagons. A 100-car train similar to the ones that currently carry coal east from Wisconsin could deliver 3 gigawatt-hours to users. Dr Carlson describes a utility-boss's jaw hitting the floor when he proposed that, instead of a multi-decade planning battle to build a high-voltage transmission line, SunTrain could meet the utility's power-import needs with a couple of trains a day.

As it turns out, a hundred years isn’t quite long enough for major language changes, although there is always some amount of drift, most of it cultural. Just compare every day language right now with our records of the 1910s and 1920s. The different communities going into isolation and quarantine also worked in favor of this divergence, as each community’s culture grew into its own thing, so some words fell in or out of favor depending on where people were and what viral strain they had. This means that yes, there are some idioms and metaphors that don’t mean the same thing, or anything at all.

Take the phrase “may the wind be at your back.” This usually means something like “safe travels” but has slightly different connotations in Romero, with all the sailing history. And in Elsie, you want to take off INTO the wind, so it means something dramatically different. Sort of a passive aggressive “good luck but not really” kind of thing. Context is everything.

There is also a force working against this, namely the ongoing attempts to preserve and rediscover as much past knowledge as possible. This isn’t just science and technology, it’s also literature and media and language too. So in a way, Postville has this kind of “Reneissance” thing going on where they’re trying to revive interest in the past. Language and culture being what they are, their reproductions are imperfect, although only Mary could say how far off they are and why.

New words have been coined, mostly to deal with the phenomena of magic, but there’s also a tradition of just adapting existing words to describe these new concepts. “Domain” is used to describe a person’s magic power, for example. The first scientists and wizards who quantified and measured magic power tried to name those units of measurements after themselves, so a wizard’s total power output is measured in Bernards, and so on. Also some concepts have compressed words for ease of use, so any vehicle that relies on a solar powered steam boiler attached to either a piston engine or a turbine is just called a “sun-[vehicle]” so there are suntrucks, suntrains, sunboats, etc.

Most family names have survived unchanged during the previous hundred years, unless the people carrying those names did not or decided that those names were more trouble than they were worth. Whether a first or middle name tends to be “older” or “newer” comes down to culture again. The more socially conservative a community is the more likely they are to use names out of older documents and surviving books. This means the Dwarves, the Humans (especially the ones from the Holdouts) and the Elves are more likely to have traditional names, while Gnomes, Dragons and Beastkin are more likely have names that evolved with the rest of the language. Having said all that, just like in The World That Was (that is to say, our world right now) it all comes down to the judgement, common sense, and sobriety of the parents.
